Bittersweet feelings from this video. As a Mexican with great memories when I lived in Ensenada, Baja California I really enjoyed understanding why the peninsula was drawn as an island for so long. I was first introduced to it in a historical museum in Ensenada and I couldn't understand how Baja California passed from an island to a peninsula to an island again. On the other hand, kinda sad that these feelings of the "magic" land of success are associated nowadays only with American California. Don't get me wrong. Baja California is a beautiful place. Tbh, the USA part of California is not really a part of the 'island'. They just call their coastal state by the name California for historic reasons. Technically the real 'California' would be Baja California of Mexico.

I live in Mexicali which is Baja California’s capital city, and from a very young age we are taught that the Californias will end up becoming an island in the future. I remember feeling scared that one day I would wake up to find the state broken off the continent and my house surrounded by the ocean 🤣 little I knew that event will happen millions of years from now… Hope I’m prepared by then…
CA will shift north over time. Long after the cities have ground o dust, what was once LA will be a suburb of Seattle. But yeah, for a long time people thought it would separate, but the faults are wrong for that. San Andreas is a transform fault, with right-lateral strike slip, ie, its shifting along north south axis, with the pacific plate shifting northerly along the slower moving NA plate. Unlike the movies, we wont become an island. Caveat: there is some geological evidence that Baja may split off as there is a smaller fault with an east/west bearing around the salton sea spreading center. This could force baja to split away from CA itself
What is the possibility that Ancient Lake Corcoran and Lake Cahuilla (Salton Sea) were adjoined and adjoined into the ocean by the San Francisco area and San Diego area’s? I recall reading about Lake Cahuilla and that it did have ocean access at one time, hence much of its salt content. Maybe the Gulf of California did once adjoin with the two aforementioned Great Lakes?

It’s well documented that central California used to flood with some degree of seasonality. I’m curious if this has played into any hypotheses as to why California was perceived as an island by some but not others.
If you speak with " listen " to indigenous oral history. There is record of California's desserts being flooded by ocean . There is even stories of spanish ships sailing in , them becoming grounded and stranded .
The journals of the old Vaqueros chronicled pastures in California as green as Europe in the 1500 and 1600s. They literally sat around all day while the cattle grazed, no migrating, no looking for water. It is said, that the Spanish were able to make a good horse because of this.

I've seen the maps of island-California before and never thought much of it. Then to think somehow before that there was actually an accurate map too is even crazier.
I moved to California in 2004 at 24 years old, and I left everything and everyone to come here. Yes I did have a fantasy that California was going to be this mystical place where beautiful woman and jobs grow on trees, although it wasn't exactly what I was dreaming of it was way better than where I was coming from. It was the best decision of my life. Yes it was a struggle but I did it, now raising a native born Californian.
The Central Valley of California used to be a giant lake that’s why the farm soil there is rich and great for farming. Do it could have looked like a lake.

17:13 There is a strait and northern passage above North America that can be navigated to get to Spain, it is called the Bering Strait and the Arctic Ocean. Though it might be a bit unuseable during most times of the year.
10:20 Looking at the Native description of the “island of women with gold,” from an anthropological perspective it is not absurd to think about. Men and women in many tribal societies tend to live separately from one another, and linguistically speaking it is not rediculous to think the word they may have had for separate could’ve bore some semblance to a word for “island,” as an island is by definition separate. And hey, they were right about the gold too.
they had realized what the Spaniards wanted, and told them where they "knew" that stuff was located... "over there where the unfriendly neighbor lives, go away and bother THEM". The Inka and Aztecs would have been _fine_ if they had disabused the Euros of that "gold" fixation from the start, and entire nations wouldn't have uprooted themselves for a promised land. "No, what little gold we have took centuries of mining and washing, and all of us work very hard (you should try that too) and my daughter is already promised, as well". On a second thought... would that have worked on fanatical people who had just invented the inquisition to get the answers they want through torture??
@@blugaledoh2669 it is actually very sexist. Many tribes believe that men and women are inherently different, and once a boy reaches a certain age, being raised or simply being around their mother and other women would make him unable to become a man. Usually there is a massive coming of age ceremony and from that point forward they may never see their mother again. After they reach another age, they are only able to go over the the woman’s section when they are ready to reproduce. This isn’t all tribes, and it wouldn’t be fair to generalize all tribes as doing this, or for this to be every tribe’s motivation for why they do do this, but it is a relatively common explanation.
@@blugaledoh2669 They live apart... in different houses of the same village. "Men-houses" and "women-houses". That much is well documented. That they'd live in different villages is to my knowledge unprecedented.
The old maps are most likely true. I live by Sacramento and the elevation is 23 ft from sea level. Also, when the gold rush happened in 1849, Sacramento had canals and you had a boat to get around the city. The Old Sacramento had to be built up 20 feet from the original landscape. Some major dams were built-Folsom, Oroville, and the San Luis reservoir and changed the landscape. There’s also the Yolo bypass thats looks like an ocean every winter. You should probably research flood zones and study California history to understand this better. California is also a major exporter of rice and rice grows in wetlands.

Just wondering were you aware of this?: The name of Calafia was likely formed from the Arabic word khalifa (religious state leader) that is known as caliph in English and califa in Spanish. Similarly, the name of Calafia's realm, California, likely originated from the same root, fabricated by the author to remind the 16th century Spanish reader of the reconquista, a centuries-long fight between Christians and Muslims that had recently concluded in Spain

I felt in love with all it's ecosystems. However, passing the border from Tijuana to San Diego always left me with a kinda sad feeling. Baja California and California split exactly the developing countries of Latin America and the first world. You can feel the economical consequences of history right there.

As a Californian, who went to the CSU system, this was fascinating to learn about my state's history. It kind of felt like an odd love letter to CA and I'm here for it. They don' call it California Dreamin' for nothing.
“On such a winter’s day”. Is how the song goes. Yep. Dreaming about warmer weather was the point of the lyrics. If I lived in a colder climate I’d be fantasizing about warmer climes too. Calida Fornax. The Latin words that became California. It means hot furnace. And boy is it! I’m a native Californian. Witnessed all kinds of weirdness associated with a beachy state. The Sun bakes folks’s brains. We’re the shake n bake state. I’m old enough to remember Northern California wanting to secede from Southern California. 😅Two very different political and life views. Conservative north and liberal south.

It’s well documented that central California used to flood with some degree of seasonality. I’m curious if this has played into any hypotheses as to why California was perceived as an island by some but not others.
How are you doing?
If you speak with " listen " to indigenous oral history.
There is record of California's desserts being flooded by ocean .
There is even stories of spanish ships sailing in , them becoming grounded and stranded .
The journals of the old Vaqueros chronicled pastures in California as green as Europe in the 1500 and 1600s. They literally sat around all day while the cattle grazed, no migrating, no looking for water. It is said, that the Spanish were able to make a good horse because of this.
The San Francisco Bay went further east than it does today and actually connected with the central Valley.
@@shells500tutubo Yes the Remnants can be seen in the landscape around the delta. The soil is definitely that of an ocean floor that existed not too long ago.

I've seen the maps of island-California before and never thought much of it. Just thought; ''ah so the early cartographers got it wrong, so what'', then you started giving the years the maps were made and i was astounded by how far apart they were. Then to think somehow before that there was actually an accurate map too is even crazier.
Additional comment; the fact that it was the people of my own country (the Dutch) that re-created the myth of it being an island is amazingly funny.

@@Enyavar1 wow. You twist history in a very propagandistic way. Congratulations on your skill.
Why do men and women live apart?
I don't know how you do it but every single one of your in-depth videos catch and hold my attention from start to finish.

The name of Calafia was likely formed from the Arabic word khalifa (religious state leader) that is known as caliph in English and califa in Spanish. Similarly, the name of Calafia's realm, California, likely originated from the same root, fabricated by the author to remind the 16th century Spanish reader of the reconquista, a centuries-long fight between Christians and Muslims that had recently concluded in Spain
