Johnny Harris: used to be 19 year old Mormon missionary, now just wakes up random guys on the train to tell them about the video's sponsor 🤣🤣🤣
Let's face it that guy was extremely patient.
I changed this comment so you won’t know why it was liked so much
Now I’m just going to be hyper-aware whenever I’m on the metro in case Johnny wants to tell me about sponsors.
5:10 is super fitting for a former Mormon missionary to do. Props to the guy.
He was Johnny Harris cameraman 👍

When did California stop being an island?
It took more exploration, but by 1747 King Ferdinand VI of Spain was convinced. He issued a decree stating that California was -- once and for all -- not an island. It took another century for cartographers to completely abandon the notion.
That is the limit of psychic thought at the time but the whole west coast was infact an island and resembled California. No need to hate, thumbs down.
and then the long awaited 10+ San Andre earthquake hits and California actually becomes an island and Las Vegas has beach front property
Well that just saved me 25 minutes lol
Did he call the police?? 😆
100 years? 1847 was when they stopped? that's the dead middle of the Mexican American war in which America took California, the California and old Spanish trail were like 15 to 20 years old by then.
The fact that he can tell such interesting stories through the lens of cartography is amazing to me.
Yeah hes not too smart but his content creation team makes okayish vids (sometimes)
17:13 There is a strait and northern passage above North America that can be navigated to get to Spain, it is called the Bering Strait and the Arctic Ocean. Though it might be a bit unuseable during most times of the year.

After some of Johnny‘s last videos received criticism for oversimplifying historical events, I really like how this video responds to that by providing sources and including disclaimers! I think that makes those videos even better, good work!

The genius of this video is that is that it realizes that California is not a geographical feature but an existential fantasy. A dream. Always has been and always will be.
California dreaminnn
More like a woke nightmare
No it’s an island
I'm
California has not been a dream lately as a californian. Not sure what you’re talking about.
The map is not entirely a mistake since the today's California entire Central Valley was once one of the largest lakes on the continent. If explorers saw this lake (which was brackish in some parts) they could easily have thought that California was an island. Though this large lake is almost completely gone today, it's remnants & deposits are why California is the most agriculturally prolific land in the world today.
Time to unblock the dams
The California basin has been filled 15 times in a certain amount of time, I forget how long it was. As a Californian I find it interesting.
I studied Californian history in college. I had one excellent class that was centered on the idea that California is, in fact, an island, in spite of being quite firmly attached to North America. Politically, historically, culturally, ecologically, geologically, it is separated from the rest of the continent. It was home to far and away the most cultural and linguistic diversity in pre-contact North America. It’s home to a dizzying array of endemic and unique species. It’s charted a separate political course since joining the Union. And it’s hard to get to. California is an island, even though it’s also not.
You just described the USA, but left out the bit about unifying such a motley crew of disparate regions into one whole.
As an Inhabitant of lower California I can confirm that even in the Mexico side is an Island. Everything is too far away.
@@anonimushbosh Remember he is from the U.S. so basically he focus this topic more into the U.S perspective. When he talks about California fever, it’s gold, and innovation, etc it mostly focused towards the California of the U.S. “Part of the Alta California region of the past” rather than then Baja California and Baja California Sur.
bro, Johnny talked about Island as in geographically… Not politically or something intangible.😅
of course
And you can only enter it by land at seven places
So, if you're a map guy, I know that you know that cartographers were notorious for cheating by copying other cartographer's maps. It only took one guy to accidently get it wrong,(or lie). Who can afford to go check? They eventually started placing islands that didn't exist so they could see who was copying their legit work. #sandyislanddoesntexist
Fun fact: cartographers still do that to this day, but with fake parks, streets, sometimes entire towns.
There were no copyright laws during the Island of California days. It's not that they cheated as much as professional cartographers were not typically explorers and so they relied on the accounts of others which included from other nations and maps. Sometimes they were not sure was correct but went with what seemed like the most credible theory. It wasn't brought up in the video but it's common to see the same cartographer have maps published in the same few years that actually contradict each other.
@@GeographyGeek the fact that these guys could roll up to the edge of a place and draw it out baffles me. I so often want to live without all of the perks of technology, but then I realize I'm literally incapable. 🤣 I have no useful skills so people who do are incredible to me.
@@ColFlustered As sailors (I'm retired Navy) we know our navigation extremely well. That means we can sail along the coast of somewhere and take sightings. We know where we are so we can tell where something else is if we can see it. By plotting those sighting out we can create maps. Not only did those sail era sailors plot the land, they also charted the off shore soundings (depths) and seabed material (for anchoring). It's just hard work but very doable if you got your navigation skills. Fair winds!

Good moment to remind you all that the original California is actually Baja California. American California was originally called Higher California for being the territory north of California, but since it became the popular one, the old California changed its name to Southern California. The California that all those legends and myths refer to and the one that was mistaken for an island for centuries, is actually Baja California.
., а нупту##(ЖЖ
Not quite, the fake maps showed ALL of california as an Island. It was shown much bigger than Baja california, so I think they meant that the whole of it was an Island
California being an island once would explain why Death Valley is lower than sea level. It would also explain the Salton Sea, a salt water lake that is below sea level, also located in the former channel.

Bittersweet feelings from this video. As a Mexican with great memories when I lived in Ensenada, Baja California I really enjoyed understanding why the peninsula was drawn as an island for so long. I was first introduced to it in a historical museum in Ensenada and I couldn't understand how Baja California passed from an island to a peninsula to an island again. On the other hand, kinda sad that these feelings of the "magic" land of success are associated nowadays only with American California. Don't get me wrong. Baja California is a beautiful place. I felt in love with all it's ecosystems. However, passing the border from Tijuana to San Diego always left me with a kinda sad feeling. Baja California and California split exactly the developing countries of Latin America and the first world. You can feel the economical consequences of history right there.
So far my favorite vid Johnny! Just came back from six months in Baja, the sea of Cortez must have been mind blowing in the early map days.

I live in Mexicali which is Baja California’s capital city, and from a very young age we are taught that the Californias will end up becoming an island in the future. I remember feeling scared that one day I would wake up to find the state broken off the continent and my house surrounded by the ocean 🤣 little I knew that event will happen millions of years from now… Hope I’m prepared by then…
CA will shift north over time. Long after the cities have ground o dust, what was once LA will be a suburb of Seattle. But yeah, for a long time people thought it would separate, but the faults are wrong for that. San Andreas is a transform fault, with right-lateral strike slip, ie, its shifting along north south axis, with the pacific plate shifting northerly along the slower moving NA plate. Unlike the movies, we wont become an island.
Caveat: there is some geological evidence that Baja may split off as there is a smaller fault with an east/west bearing around the salton sea spreading center. This could force baja to split away from CA itself

“On such a winter’s day”. Is how the song goes. Yep. Dreaming about warmer weather was the point of the lyrics. If I lived in a colder climate I’d be fantasizing about warmer climes too. Calida Fornax. The Latin words that became California. It means hot furnace. And boy is it! I’m a native Californian. Witnessed all kinds of weirdness associated with a beachy state. The Sun bakes folks’s brains. We’re the shake n bake state. I’m old enough to remember Northern California wanting to secede from Southern California. 😅Two very different political and life views. Conservative north and liberal south.
Tbh, the USA part of California is not really a part of the 'island'. They just call their coastal state by the name California for historic reasons. Technically the real 'California' would be Baja California of Mexico.
I'm a CSU grad too. California history was some of my favorite things to learn about while studying there.

I am so glad you have this platform.
10:20 Looking at the Native description of the “island of women with gold,” from an anthropological perspective it is not absurd to think about. Men and women in many tribal societies tend to live separately from one another, and linguistically speaking it is not rediculous to think the word they may have had for separate could’ve bore some semblance to a word for “island,” as an island is by definition separate. And hey, they were right about the gold too.
they had realized what the Spaniards wanted, and told them where they "knew" that stuff was located... "over there where the unfriendly neighbor lives, go away and bother THEM".
The Inka and Aztecs would have been _fine_ if they had disabused the Euros of that "gold" fixation from the start, and entire nations wouldn't have uprooted themselves for a promised land.
"No, what little gold we have took centuries of mining and washing, and all of us work very hard (you should try that too) and my daughter is already promised, as well".
On a second thought... would that have worked on fanatical people who had just invented the inquisition to get the answers they want through torture??
@@Enyavar1 wow. You twist history in a very propagandistic way. Congratulations on your skill.
Why do men and women live apart?
@@blugaledoh2669 it is actually very sexist. Many tribes believe that men and women are inherently different, and once a boy reaches a certain age, being raised or simply being around their mother and other women would make him unable to become a man. Usually there is a massive coming of age ceremony and from that point forward they may never see their mother again. After they reach another age, they are only able to go over the the woman’s section when they are ready to reproduce. This isn’t all tribes, and it wouldn’t be fair to generalize all tribes as doing this, or for this to be every tribe’s motivation for why they do do this, but it is a relatively common explanation.
@@blugaledoh2669 They live apart... in different houses of the same village. "Men-houses" and "women-houses". That much is well documented.
That they'd live in different villages is to my knowledge unprecedented.
It’s well documented that central California used to flood with some degree of seasonality. I’m curious if this has played into any hypotheses as to why California was perceived as an island by some but not others.
How are you doing?
If you speak with " listen " to indigenous oral history.
There is record of California's desserts being flooded by ocean .
There is even stories of spanish ships sailing in , them becoming grounded and stranded .
The journals of the old Vaqueros chronicled pastures in California as green as Europe in the 1500 and 1600s. They literally sat around all day while the cattle grazed, no migrating, no looking for water. It is said, that the Spanish were able to make a good horse because of this.
The San Francisco Bay went further east than it does today and actually connected with the central Valley.
