Flex your diaphragm, keep your throat loose, and growl breathily. It shouldn't hurt or cause an intense tickling in your throat (if it does, that's probably you using your vocal cords to make the growl, which is bad and can damage your vocal cords). Don't go for volume right away either, shoot for slightly louder than your normal speaking volume at first. After you get that down it's mainly just learning how to annunciate words while growling, and how to use different mouth shapes and tongue positions to alter the sound.
