@@juaneduardo504 Akata is a Yoruba word, the person you responded to is Igbo and if she lives in Nigeria I doubt she uses that word. To answer your question, it roughly translates to ‘a cat who is not home’, referring to an African not in Africa. However, from my understanding in the US it is now used as a slur specifically for African Americans(I’m not American but this is what I’ve heard). Even Africans that aren’t necessarily Nigerian/Yoruba seem to use it which I find strange. It’s also been incorrectly translated to ‘cotton picker’ and I’m not sure where that false info came from.

@@mokahgirl5165 Yvonne grew up in America around Black people. So she probably did grow up around African Americans seeing as that is the dominant black ethnic group. As far as I know Yvonne hasn’t said anything bad about African Americans unless I’m missing something. Even if she has what has that got to do with the OP? Are you spreading venom simply because she’s Nigerian too? Ridiculous.

Anyways, Akata is a Yoruba word that basically means "a cat abroad" which is a metaphor for Africans outside Africa. I don't know how it started, but it is now seen as a derogatory term for African Americans because people mistake it for cotton-picker, Which is not true. the word has a lot of backstories (IDK which one to believe) so, just google it and pick your narrative.
I don't think it is an offensive word maybe because I am Nigerian, but I would not call anybody that just in case they feel offended by it.
