those transitions look neat but are way too slow for a practical UI
You can speed up the animations in the code.
Agreed. I will speed it up a little in the next iteration. Thankfully as someone pointed out, it´s just tweaking a variable value in the code.
What’s actually “slow”? Are you actually needing to look down to see what gear you’re in? It’s just a cool gadget. What is needed for “practical”? Having said that, if it’s speed up, that’s cool too. 😊
@@yungpharm91 lets be real, here. while i agree that it is a gimmick, the creator took the criticism REALLY well and actually plans on speeding up the animation. also, like he said, its just tweaking a variable value in the code sketch. im just starting to program myself and am starting to realize that criticisms like this are actually really, really useful for inventors and diyers alike lol no hate. just saying he is 100% right about the animation being too slow. if this was used on say,, a digital dashboard for a sim racing rig, it could be distracting and .001 seconds can make a world of difference when racing for money lol
@@upir_upir the fact that you even coded this thing in the first place is crazy to me lol but i just started learning arduino and essentially only understand the "if/then" logic of programming, as of yet lol
Bro just casually dropped the best fusion 360 tutorial ive seen😂
This wasn´t really intentional, but thank you! Unfortunately I just found out a few Fusion tricks right after publishing this video. I guess I will use them the next time..
Absolutely agree. An actual hands-on tutorial. Thank you!!
I have to watch it at . 25 speed
The use of mirroring, and a discussion on tolerances would have made it perfect. As is, it's a pretty decent tutorial.
Agreed to it, not having knowledge about Fusion 360, even a layman could understand what was happening in the design.❤
Nothing I'd like more than to be staring at my shifter to know what gear I'm in when I should be looking at the road
You are right, I need to put a color LCD on the knob to show the real-time view of the road ahead...

How to create a problem where there wasn't one ... shift info is on the dash already ...
You might be surprised, but the majority of old cars don’t have this information on the dashboard.
Also this could be nice for simulation setup
This Channel is singlehandedly the most interesting channel on youtube. Never have I ever used an Arduino Board, Nor have a 3d printer or done some kind of designing, but you got me hooked. I am currently binge-watching every single video of yours. Might give this whole Arduino coding a try. You definitely are a big inspiration. Greetings from germany!
Do it !!!!!! you won't look back !
100% agree
Thank you for your very nice comment, I really appreciate it! You should definitely try Arduino, it’s so much fun. If you start in Wokwi (online emulator), you don’t need to spend any money upfront, and only buy required components once you have it working. Of course it’s much more fun with real hardware. Good luck with your projects and feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I wasn’t done marvelling at how nice you made our matrix display look with those animations and you drop a whole end to end Fusion 360 tutorial 😂 - we have the Bambu with the filament on top, but I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never 3D printed anything. This is the closest I’ve come to maybe changing that. Keep up the incredible work!
Thank you, Phil, for your nice words, I really appreciate it. I´m big fan of your work at Pimoroni. As for the 3D printing, I wanted to try it for a long time, but I was scared that it would end up being rabbit hole. Suprisingly, it was quite straighforward - at least the first few steps that I have made. You should definitely try it. Good luck!
I learned more about Fusion 360 from this video than watching tutorials! I am glad you chose to include your workflow, most people skip past the design process but I thoroughly enjoyed watching how you tackled the intricacies of the part.
Thank you for your comment, I´m glad it was useful. I always try to include every single step as I work on my projects. If someone is brave enough to follow the steps, they should be hopefully able to finish the project.
boii this is a masterpiece. you really refined this shifter project to its finest
Thank you, I´m glad you like it! Although, there are still a few details that I would like to tweak and experiment with...
a seriously underrated channel
Thank you, I´m glad you think that. Let´s see if the channel with grow with more videos...
Really loving this series, can't wait to see it all hooked up and working
Thank you for your comment, I´m glad you like it! I still plan to finalize it with a few more tweaks and put everything together.
I like how you also pointed out the downsides of the 3d printer even though you got it for free
Thank you. I try to be honest, this 3D printer is great- especially for that money, but obviously nothing is perfect.
Great prototype and integration of skills, cant wait for next phase revision.
Thank you for your nice words. Yep, there are still a few things that I would like to tweak and experiment with, but if you have any feedback as to what you would like to see, I´m all ears.
If this could some how be all self contained in the shifter it be the most epic thing ever. I would love to have one of these just because it’s so different and the display is so clean.
Making this self-contained is surely my goal, but it will take me a while until I get there since I need to learn a lot of new things. Thank you for your comment!
W o W gr8 work 😮 honestly I never thought that you could go on to such detail
Thank you, I´m glad you like it!
Love this video. I love the fact that you're showing us. Step by step on how you making it. This way, I can learn the program itself two.
Thank you, I’m glad you like it! Hopefully it’s easy to follow. Good luck with your projects!
These videos are soooo informative. Keep up the great work bro!
Thank you, I´m glad you like it!
Great Fusion tutorial! I dabbled in Blender as a teenager and now getting into 3D printing I thought about using it, but I'm reconsidering after what I saw. It seems so easy to design such a thought out piece by using flat sketch and then modyfing it by extruding/substracting
Thank you! Blender is a great tool, but for 3D printing, Fusion is much easier to use and especially for tweaking the models in case you need some small adjustments. I´m still learning it, but I´m having a great time using it. Also, there are many tutorials out there to follow. Good luck with your projects!
Finally someone does this. Kinda gives me some ideas for the car
That´s cool, good luck with your project! What kind of car are you going to modify?

Thank you! Funny to say, but I’m also complete beginner with Fusion. But slowly making progress..
It's truly amazing how many applications this has. I couldn't imagine having such technology 25 years ago and now it's so ubiquitous. I'm still hoping that some company puts out a keyboard with tiny displays built into the keys to show which keyset you're using so I don't have to finish my own project.
Thank you for your comment, I agree that technology is much more accessible, and that´s great. As for the keyboard, you will be quite happy to find out that this topic is something that I´m working on for the next video.
Well done, Its coming on well. Ill get package together to send you this weekend of my project for motorcycle gear indicator.

Nice stuff, if i recreate it, i would probably go for an ESP32 C3, same size as the display and could project the gear position to a second display, I'm sure you mainly wanted to keep it simple and thank you for the great work
Nu looking this model up i came across the ‘ESP32-S3 Development’ could be very Nice as wel. But indeed over complicated.
@@manuroelants1215 yeah, im working on a more extensive setup with can bus connection and displays, so might as well go full in lol
Thank you. I do plan to use a smaller microcontroller eventually and hopefully fit that into the knob as well. We will see how that goes..
@@upir_upir the C3 board (there are ultra mini variants) should fit under the footprint of the display, if you desolder the usb-c port then it's not thicker than the display, has cassellated holes, im sure it would work for you nicely..
I'm trying to build an ESP mesh net of sensors in multiple regions of the car and try outputting to a display, and this is even without the display a nice tutorial you put together for us
Love the work but a point to remember is that some jurisdictions require you to display the gear positions on the knob.
There must be some exceptions as I don´t have the printed gear positions on my shifter (in a stock car).
Looks amazing
Thank you, I´m glad you like it!
Excellent F360 tutorial!
Many thanks!
Hi there, for people like me, that I haven't got the knowledge of arduino, electronic and no $$ to buy a 3d printer, you have a plan for the near future to produce and selling this fantastic display. I am sure it will look pretty nice in my miata 1990.
Thanks for share with everybody your efforts to bring up this project.
Greetings from BelloCielo - Chile
Jaime
Thank you for your comment:
a) You don´t really need that much of knowledge of Arduino, since the sketch is already written and ready to be used
b) You can simulate all the eletronics part in WOKWI in browser
c) You don´t need to buy 3D printer, but get it printed by friend / any online service like for example PCBWay (still, the A1 mini is only 250$)
That said, while I don´t plan to produce and sell this product, I might have a small batch for someone like you. If you are willing to share photos of installation into your car, I would be happy to send you at least the 3D printed parts. Is you miata 5 speed or 6 speed transmission?
I built myself a 3D printer for an equivalent of around $120 back 7 years ago, I'm still using it, it hasn't taken up much money in repairs at all, though a lot of time. A question of dedication for sure. Me I can't imagine affording a Mazda MX-5.
Hmm… I’m tempted to duplicate with a faux Nixie tube
That would look so great, definitely belongs in a back to the future themed car
Do you have a link to the faux Nixie tube? That would definitely look very interesting!
Simply the king of display's
Thank you!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Fantastic video.
Thank you, I´m glad you like it!
oo that looks real good! so now you could get them cast in metal and there is not limit to color and finishes
Thank you! The current geometry would be hard to get from metal, but maybe the next iteration will make it possible..
Amazing!
Thank you, I’m glad you like it!
Was eagerly waiting for this✨❤️
Thank you!!
Use a hollow tube for the shift shaft and use a round cable that's meant to repeatedly bend, such as some silicone USB cable. Then you can stick the cable through the shift shaft and hide the cable entirely. If you use some serial protocol for the shift knob assembly, you could also integrate buttons for special car functions or such into it.
That´s an interesting idea, I was thinking about the same, but I´m not quite sure if you can get hollow tube shifter rod.
wow you got a free printer That is what i am talking about. Im Glad for you. And great project
Thank you, I´m glad you like it!
Super sick! Transparent PETG isn't gonna work for the face. That little tint piece you have is pretty perfect. Maybe some resin with colored dye, but FDM is just never going to get clear enough.
You have seen the glass clear prints on CNC Kitchen right? Almost getting there.
But would be nice to be able to do actual custom lenses somehow even if not quite optical grade. But at least contact lenses for things like these. Maybe casting them.
You are right with transparent PETG. It´s translucent, has an interesting effect, but I will probably go with the tinted acrylic. I will still show it in the net video, it´s quite unusual.
Very nice tutorial for Fusion360!
Glad you think so!
amazing :) u are vey talented
Thank you very much, I´m glad you like it!
cool project!
Thanks!
while virtually NOBODY on this planet looks at his shifter while driving
They will be looking if you have display inside :)
Some vehicle layouts have 5 and 6 next to each other so this could be pretty useful for highway driving when you can't easily tell which you are in my grabbing the shifter.
i think that i might use an 8x8 led array, and make fairly quick transitions....it's also possible, with input from OBD II BlueTooth interface, to use an up or down arrow for 'suggested shift', when your gas pedal is not "floored"
I have used 8x8 LED Matrix Displays previously, but the ones that I have were too big to fit into the shifter knob.
Love your videos ❤️
Thank you!
Nice!

Carbon fibre filament and maybe a little bit of fuzzy skin in slicer would make the knobs look even better I bet
Is the carbon filament PLA? Do you have any favorite brand? I will definitely play with the fuzzy skin option, but I wasn´t sure what settings to use to not make it look too fuzzy.
@@upir_upir For the use of being in a car it may be enough with CF-PETG since CF-PLA might still have too low softening temperature (in case the car is outside on a sunny day). If even that isn't enough then CF-ABS/PA-6/PC would all be good but not as easy to print.
Damn fine job, 👍👍 only thing I'd request for version 2.0 is to speed up the transition speed for the numbers..they a bit slow..in traffic u would start to Ignore it until it caught up..😊
Thank you for your comment, yes, speeding up the animation is on my todo list. It definitely feels quite slow when used on the real shifter.
try use fuzzy setting. it will give some texture on your 3d printed part.for starting setting, point distance : 0.15mm. thickness : 0.15mm
Thank you for the comment, I will definitely try that to see how it looks. Still new to 3D printing..
Woooow😮
Thank you!
I'm new to fusion 360 and 3D modeling what do you advice me, how long did it take you, how is the learning curve and other advice you've got. So next time I update my CV I can say I can 3D model. I've really impressed myself with what I've done so far and I'm planing to make my ideas come to life. What are your advice?
My advice would be to keep learning and modeling. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to Fusion, it definitely takes some time to learn this properly. Good luck with your projects!
@@upir_upir Thank you! I will.
Great works!
maybe red colors will be great for those.
Do you mind add different color while car got rev limit?
That´s an interesting idea, but you would need a different display. This one only supports showing white color (or faded white = grayscale).
That #/2 On the Fusion thing seemed like a no Brainer But I didnt know that, No more calculator for simple measurements XD
I´m glad it was useful. Later in the day I did found out that if you draw a line in the center and set it to "centerline", you don´t even have to divide the radiuses by 2, Fusion will do it for you.
It looks really nice. But I was just wondering what caliber you use?
Thank you. As for calipers, frankly it´s just some cheap AliExpress version for like 10$.. but apparently has enough precision for 3D printed parts.
Good job Guy ;oP
Thank you, thank you!
use hot glue from the inside to block all holes, then pour clear apoxy over everything to height.
That´s an interesting idea, but for now, I wanted to be able to disassemble everything easily.
Did you think about using an Arduino Nano and including space for it inside the knob?
Definitely. Maybe not even Nano but something smaller. I´m looking at the options, there are many small boards out there.
Intresting, can you add such function, like strobing, when it is time to shift next gear, like on newer cars 😁 like reading rpm from obd and show animation at certain rpms
Yep, all of that should be possible. I do plan to make a few tweaks and adjustments and perhaps add a few more functions, thank you for the feedback!
nice. next you need to put a speedometer display inside the gas pedal
That´s an idea! I do rememeber that the KITT from Knight Rider had LEDs all over the gas pedal, and they would gradually light up as you press the pedal, but having a display there would be a next level!
This is the future
It is! When you can design something, 3D print it and make it work, all on your own, we are definitely living in the future.
I wonder if the same can be done for a 4-speed or 6-speed gearbox?
Should be possible, just use more or less hall sensors. I might try to use this with 6-speed, I don´t have any car with 4-speed gearbox.
Is there a name for this kind of visuals or a style category? I reminds me of those retro Mustangs made by Charge.
I believe it could be called retro-futurism -- i.e. depictions of the future where the "future" has already happened. Using LED matrix displays with visible segments is often times used for that - Hyundai ioniq 5N has those segmented front and back lights, as wall as many other cars. I have seen the Charge Mustang live last year, and it looked stunning. Too bad they only make 500 of those, and it probably out of my price range anyway.
@@upir_upir Was thinking of it, thanks for the answer!
I love it!... to not use it in any car.. In the dashboard though, that may be be of help.
Thank you! Yep, there is nothing stopping you putting this display anywhere else.
Where did you get the manual gear shifter mechanisim from?
I did get it at local junkyard, I needed the very same that’s in my car, and it was around 50$.
How did you get the printer if they only ship to specific countries?
I believe they have separate EU and US store. Is your country not on the list?
Needs one more digit, so I can install one in the truck!
You can flip the display by 90° and now you have 11x7 display, so two 5x7 digits should be possible.
Great Work man. Have you considered routing the cable inside the shifter ? it will be clean
Thank you. I did, but I´m little bit worried I don´t have the right tools and knowledge to make it work - i.e. to drill a hole inside.
Ah yes. That thing I haven't looked at in 6 years, put a display on it.
This is our modern depravity at work, dared to ask: But would it be cool tho?
It must be very hard to get into a car and not look at the shifter :)
Oil fill the knob like a watch for best visibility
That’s an interesting idea!
@@upir_upir I'm occasionally good for something!
Will help heatsink the LEDs too. This is critical in summer or a convertible. My shifter knob in a Miata used to get hot enough I had to swap the solid metal ball in summers or it would burn me.
Call me stupid, but what board do you use for gear-stick position detection ? Something based on hall effect sensor ?
There is no need to call anyone stupid. It´s a custom PCB with hall sensors, all the details are described in this video - ua-cam.com/video/QixtxaAda18/v-deo.html
@@upir_upir Got it. Many thanks.

I´m sorry to hear that, if you have Fusion, there is a native Fusion file included on GitHub, but I will also upload STEP file tomorrow. Hope that helps.
The STL file is now on GitHub.
@@upir_upir Thanks! I just started printing now
Cool overkill project. Love it. But who looks at their shift-stick when they shift? Thanks for the video.
Thank you. Well, if you have a shifter like this, everyone will look at your shifter! :)
Maybe I've missed something, but what is the use case for this. having to look down at the gear knob to see what gear you're in kind of defeats the need for the display, because you can see the physical position of the knob to determine what gear you're in. The display in your eyeline when driving would make more sense. Love the design and attention to detail, just not sure how useful this is.
The primary use-case is to have something unusual looking in your car, maybe a conversation starter or simply something for the passenger to look at. If you have a proper race car, you can use this technique and mount the display on the dashboard instead.
Some kind of AI assistant on the car dashboard will be amazing! What do you think?
Right now that´s probably beyond my knowledge level, but I will start with the dashboard alone and see where it goes..
Can you make one for a sequential shifter with CANBUS?
Do you mean a true sequential shifter, or automatic transmission with paddles? Do you have such a car?
@@upir_upir Sequential shifter to the 8HP75, Yes technically it's an auto box, but I have the Turbolamik with the Jinx Shifter and paddles, would love to see this on top the Jinx Shifter, with faster animations! Thank you, and yes, definitely. Just increase the increment variable value. I will tweak it in the next video.
Wouldn't it be easier to use something like ADXL345 to read the position? There would be no need for custom PCBs, and everything would fit in the shifter knob if you used a small microcontroller like ESP32-C3 Super Mini.

innovation point, interesting but for real wolrd use look like more gadget.
This is more for people that don't have that much of interest in driving a car/tech enthousiasts(often they can be in both category).
Better way to know what gear you are in is to put your hand on the stick/looking the rev counter for the speed your doing. But that require to know a bit your car, back to peoples don't give a sh*t at

It is a gadget, more for the aesthetics, less for the actual function.
Built a canbus shifter with oled esp32 display..... Useless as the only time you can use it for anything useful is when looking down at it.. Displays are meant to be forward view for a reason..
It's meant to be more of a novelty anyway. In a manual it should obvious what gear you're in at any time. This just looks cool.
It´s nice that someone understands the purpose of this project. Not everything has to be useful.
Is it compatible with Tesla?
Definitely, you just show "gear 1" all the time and you are always correct. Actually not. You also have reverse I guess. Well...
Hard to say, but i forgot your channel name, some guy on shorts made mechanical 7-segment with two camshafts and motor and i thought you should meet ;)

nice gimick :) but 1. if you need to see what gear you are in then manual is not for you :D 2. by the time animation is half way i would need to shift a gear. 3. i hold a shifter in such way that i would not see most of the screen :D

Shifter from the future doesn’t have handle
You might be surprised, but the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, which is an EV car, has actually a (fake) shifter.
Why have a solution looking for a problem? I drove a manual transmission VW bug for many years and never felt a need for something like this. I either knew what gear I was in, or could feel the position of the shifter.
Let´s think about this project of not being necessarily useful, but rather a cool piece of technology how to make your car look a little bit nicer and futuristic looking.
You would need to change gear before the display changed. And if you don't know what gear your in without looking then you shouldn't be driving a manual car.
I agree that the animation transition should be faster.
No. That's dangerous.
Is it more dangerous than finding the AC controls while you are driving?
@@upir_upir no shit sherlock.
OK it's neat but why? What is the point?
Just a way to spice up the shifter knob with display to look nicer. Does not have to necessarily have any function.
Display for n00b drivers?
