Good episode. It would be nice to see some more reviews of Bowie's work on this fine channel. (I know you did 'Blackstar' but there's plenty more goodies to get your teeth into.)
Oh, and that's a top quality joke at the 55 second mark. lol :)
Thank you Vinyl Rewind. Great to hear the younger generations discussing Bowie. I bought "David Live" back in the late '70s and have always loved it. Interestingly, at the time of it's release it got mostly bad reviews, but it's good to know that decades later the magic of this performance is being recognized. Of course, back in Europe we never got to see the legendary Diamond Dogs tour. But "David Live" is a fabulous snapshot.
thanks for checking it out
Great episode! One of my favorite live albums. The interesting thing about this album is that it was at the end of Bowie's Diamond Dogs tour. For that tour he dragged around an elaborate stage set with a crane and post-apocalyptic buildings. Towards the end of the tour he ditched all that and rearranged the songs with a more soulful feeling, foreshadowing Young Americans, his next album.
And by the way, it's Mott THE Hoople (Hoop) not Mott Hopple (Hop). It's a band, not one guy.
I agree with Anthony - I'm glad to see that Bowie can still pull in new fans. He's pretty much my favorite musician of all time. I bought 'Diamond Dogs' when it first came out (I was about 12), and saw him at least 5 times, from 'Station to Station' to his "farewell" tour of songs he was never going to play in public again. The 'Serious Moonlight' tour was phenomenal. I can the first time I heard 'David Live,' and that 'Width of a Circle' was my favorite. Even now, at 52, I'm a huge fan :)
Good discussion and insights you guys.
I have been a huge Bowie fan since seeing him in 83 in Detroit as a HS Sr.
We listened to LIVE 100s of times in that era.
I think it is a great record because he took all of those tunes from HD,ZS, AS and DD and completely re-arranged just about everything about the tunes. From Instrumentation, Tempo and his singing itself.
And then the dude goes and re-invents the tunes again in 76, 78, 83,,,,and so on.
Good work. Thanks
@Vinyl Rewind David Live definitely one of my favorite live albums and wish I still had my vinyl, if for nothing else.. the awesome gate fold with photos. Earl Slick's guitar on that tour is in your face mind blowing, esp when trading licks with the sax work. Love the channel... Cheers!
Great content. David Live was the tour I first saw him on, amazing sets and performances!
haha, I was just wondering how others do it. I should make a pile. I tend to bag the cover and put the vinyl in a new paper sleeve and then eventually I'll clean it at some point.
Zachary looks like he just came out of the seventies
Interesting interview. It's remind me when i was a teenager ,and i have always these old vinyls..The sound was great !It's a good thing to see that ,because the tonalities were different ,and excellent !,exceptional! ,the best ! I'm happy for having heard that .Thank you .
Thank you for messaging me the link to this! I look forward to other episodes!
Thanks for posting. Saw this tour in Philadelphia on the 2nd night of taping. Still have the review from The Phila. Inquirer that they ran 2 days later. Also saw Thin White Duke Tour, Glass Spider Tour, Serious Moonlight Tour and Reality Tour in Philadelphia. Also saw Bowie in The Elephant Man off Broadway. Always have been a BIG fan!!!
Wow, you are very lucky!
So awesome . I only saw Bowie once and it was in 1995 for the Outside tour with Nine Inch Nails . Great tour but would’ve loved to seen him in the 70’s
thanks for watching!
Hey Geek, love your show! Thank you!
Great review! Enjoyed your guests. Earl Slick is a monster on guitar. I dig "Knock on Wood" and "Rock and Roll With Me".
thank you
Keep up the great work. I love your sense of humor. Do you go by Geek?
Within the show yeah, but sometimes guests are more comfortable calling me by my actual name
Well, this is Rick. And you are?
Eric
Thank ya kindly
You bring up a great point that I forgot to mention, but yes, you're absolutely right about re-arranging all the tunes, in a way that makes the whole album gel together. thanks for watching
I love Bowie
This is too well-produced to have only 5.6k views. Keep it up, this is amazing!
thanks
One of my favorite live albums. Love the groove and sax twist on his songs. Love the renditions of moon age daydreams, sweet thing, all the young dudes, cracked actor, Aladdin sane it's all amazing
So tempting right. I use to buy up anything regardless of condition, knowing that at some point I'll upgrade with a copy in better condition, but now I'm more picky especially since the price has jumped at thrift stores. I find garage sales are the best prices.
I think the best live bands are ones that are able to take a song they created in the studio and change it enough so that it still sounds like the same song but is also completely different.
For me the best live performances of a specific song are Pink Floyd's live versions of 'Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun'. The studio version is quicker, psychedelic and fantastic; but as soon as they went live, the tempo slowed, it almost doubled in length, an extended instrumental mid-section that is ridiculously trippy and it became this cosmic, acid rollarcoaster.
I do get that from time to time
That was fun.
Your guests seem like really nice people.
Thanks.
One of my favorite albums...David Sanborn on sax is awesome. Earl Slick on guitar trading licks on Suffragette City...... "Width of a Circle" and the Diamond Dog numbers "Sweet Thing" are outstanding. Also the best live "Rock n Roll Suicide" that David has done live. The critics didn't like it, but the album is awesome. I bought the vinyl when it came out in 1974 (first day) and loved it ever since. Great review and the band here is also interesting,
Cant say I love that live album as much as the studio but good show man. Good to see other young people like bowie.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Thank you!
I discovered that album (as well as Station To Station) when transferring 8-tracks onto cassette for a friend. I liked what I heard so I went out and bought the LPs used ($5 each)!
Oh no, what happened to your vinyl? Never too late to get back into the game, and now it's easier than ever. Thanks for checking the episode out
Thank you
thank you
I read that it got bad reviews. I wonder what critics were judging it against? Thank you for watching
Thanks for your feedback. You make a good point. We're constantly experimenting with the show and seeing what works and what doesn't. I hope you check out our next episode, I think you'll find we strike a better balance. Thanks for watching
thank you!
Thank you for watching. Tom made you do that?
Another great video, Eric! I always stayed away from this album - it used to have a bad reputation for some reason, but so many people have said otherwise, I think I made a mistake not grabbing it when I had the chance!
Ah sweet. I have a pair of big old Pioneer's, I should try that. Thanks for checking out the episode
Loved the open. Good stuff as always.
Thanks for sharing this "David Live" album review, i have enjoyed a lot with your video.
This is more a promo video for these two than an analysis of David Live. That’s classic uncool bait and switch!
Hey there I’m a new subscriber and love your channel and a huge Bowie fan. I got the chance to catch him live in Toronto ‘04 for his Reality Tour and David & his band (especially Earl Slick on guitar) definitely didn’t disappoint. And I really agree that Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen is a great live album and better movie and I also loved George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh live album/movie. Btw, could you do a review of either Hunky Dory or his follow up Ziggy Stardust if you already haven’t? Keep up the great work especially with The Beatles!!
Love this. Thanks for sahring!
thanks for the suggestions!
that's a great story, definitely something younger generations will never know, for better or worse. Nice deal too
I spotted it in a flea market some months ago but it was scratched and in poor condition so I passed it over.I'll pick it up some day in decent condition.Huge Bowie fan I have loads of his stuff on vinyl.
Love the album, and the video!
we did add a little reverb to help mask the bad audio recording on my mic. I guess it's more pronounced on some systems
Nice Teddy boy style from here in the uk.
Great review major tom you rebel rebel .
grazie mille per il video!
Yeah, I don't understand what the critics were listening to back then. Oh well, we know it's great. Thank for sharing and tuning in!
Thanks for this Eric ( Vinyl Geek ). You are one cool guy, you remind me of Chris Isaak especially from the side. Cheers.
great story
Haha, thank you! I'll have to check that track out
Love the show
thank you!
Thanks for the recommendation this is great :)
It was fun watching this, it felt short. =)
You're welcome and thank you!
thanks again buddy
I couldn't agree more
Ah no worries, take your time with it. Do you usually clean your used records before you play them for the first time?
Already I'm jealous that you saw him live at least 5 times. Have you listened to his latest release?
oh man this is his BEST live album imo :)
dude, thank you!
Ah man, I gotta lay off drinking so much Scotch while shooting
It's not a bad record. "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" is a good bonus track - and the live versions of "1984", "Watch That Man" and "Big Brother" are almost as good as the original studio recordings.

Najlepsza muza na świecie! Dziękuję!
Thank you. Haha, I get Chris Isaak a lot when I go to car shows for some reason.
ah thanks man, I haven't heard this before.
Your show is great....big like
thank you
I really love David Live!
RAD EPISODE !!
Do black star please!! As a tribute to this amazing man.
+Matt H I had to wait nearly a month to get a vinyl copy, hence the delay
I'm not sure why either, maybe cause he was pretty coked out at the time? I know it was kind of a last minute idea to do as well
Wow, no way. That's crazy cool. That must have been quite the tour. Yeah, I know how to say the band's name now haha. Oh well
Yo you should review the Talking Head’s Stop Making Sense
I subscribed to your page. Very cool!
BOWIE IS GOD AND THE SAVOIR OF MUSIC!!!
Mott the 'Hopple'
Do you still have that copy?
yeh David best song was given to them all the young dudes.Well played by David.
haha, classic, I like your lyrics
I miss him already @vinylrewind
+Moshe Zaremba same here
The guy guest reminds me of rich on skins uk.
Just a thought......T.Rex, Electric Warrior or The Slider?
Wrong lyrics? I always thought that all of the Go Go's were lesbians and they were really cool since they had that big hit called "I Love Cecile!" and they were
OUT and PROUD!!!
I recently found out that the lyrics were "Our Lips Are Sealed".
hehe
Vinil takoo jaja
Nice vid, Cool guests , shame for the audio, sounds a bit poor !
Yeah, we had mic issues that day
Thought that was Moz for a sec.!
I love Bowie's music but for some reason he freaks me out in the movie Labyrinth. Haha. It was childhood traumatized experience I guess. Lol >.
It's the bulge
I wish you had spent more time actually reviewing the Bowie album, not talking about the contemporary artist sitting with you, if they are good enough, they will also eventually have their Vinyl Rewind review.
And is it my computer or is there too much reverb?
Vinyl, if you'd be interested in early 90s Bowie, check this out:

Mott the Hopple? Hoople-head. As in Mott the "Who"pple
Why did they plug their album and spend so little time on Bowie . Kind of feeling ripped off
Did the Script loose a few Pages? 4 out of 17 songs? dissapointing..
I don't like this album at all. But it nice to see and hear your passion!
you misspronounced "Mott The Hoople"
You sent me a n invite on my other channel and i come to view on this my other channel.Yes i like stuff like this, wondered if you can help me with the secret of how i get targeted with your music invite so when my albums done in year on my other channel i can target and invite similar minded people. Thanks for the invite, good idea too.
