A You Need Me I Don't Need You Loop Tutorial is easily the most requested video on my channel so here it finally is. Ed Sheeran wrote this song back before his first studio album and it's arguably the song which got him recognised as it fused his folky "singer/songwriter" style with rap and hip-hop. I don't actually cover the song myself but hopefully my tutorial of the guitar loops will help some of you.

For those wondering which live version he’s playing- “You Need Me I don’t Need You Captured in the Live Room”. I started listening to that video since 2014 and I’m absolutely ecstatic to have found someone making a tutorial on it after all these years. Mad props to this guy for making this easy to learn and fulfilling my longtime curiosity on how the hell Ed plays this song.
Words cannot express how happy this video has made me , you even included all the extras such as Layla and the rap breakdown , thank you mate you have now earned a loyal sub 😊
I can only agree 👍🙏
I have no idea why this doesn't have 1 million views. Super informative! If I could like this 1000 times I would, subbed and liked, thanks for the Ed Sheeran content!!!
Yeah, he definitely deserves more for his work and time put in. I just think most people are not looking for tutorials and such. People just like seeing the final product instead of how people get there or how to do it themselves.
I've been trying to learn this song for months. This just taught me it in 20 minutes. Thanks and keep making great tutorials.
this is an amzing tutorial ive been wanting something like this for years, explains everything. thanks!

there are a number of tutorials for Bloodstream, but its not an "easy" track to master:)
To be honest, I thought I had done a tutorial on that 😂
Yeah I will get onto it as soon as my mad summer season is over!

Hey Jan, thanks so much for your comment. It means a lot!
AMAZING 😉!!! You are so good. Well done!
Glad you liked it. Thanks so much for your comment!
This is such a great tutorial, it really helped me a lot. Also, have you considered a loop pedal tutorial on I See Fire? That would be so cool!!
Avery Francisco his talking about
Fire
i downloaded the video , learned from the video , really loved it so came back to give it a like and subscribe ;P
Very good tutorial, explained in a much more simple way than most! Any chance you could do the strumming tutorial for this? The fingerstyle/strumming parts are hard to pick up.
amazing
Thank you so much
Dude !!! Thank you !
You're very welcome!
excellent video mate.. and you can definitely beatbox
Finally😊🙌
Hahaha! Sorry it took so long. Hope it helps!
Awesome job man! Thumbs up! I was almost upset when you said "pretty much that's all of the loops" and I knew there was the Layla-riff missing :D
Very happy you added it although he is adding the layla part 2 times. First time like you played it, but then he doubles it an octave higher I guess. He does that in pretty much every video where he is adding Layla!
But as I said, great tutorial! Keep it up buddy! ;)
Raphi Z ii
Thank you
Thank you for doing this:)
Also for another one could you do don't by ed as well? Think that would be a great tutorial:) keep up the good work buddy
Thank you for your comment. Yeah I looked into that one but Ed uses his monster looper for that song which has 3 channels I think. With an RC-30, there's no way to get the loops exactly the same as Ed does. I'll try to come up with something though.
Lee Townsend Oh I see tbf I checked his loop pedal and my god that thing is a beast. Thank you mate:)
Your awsome dude
Great video-
Aha aha whoooo 😂 the way you said it made me laugh, thank you very much for this lesson you nailed it
Almost learned it!😅
finally someone who made a real tutorial of this song
Thanks so much, glad you like it
You should have a short image showing how you press the looper on the screen. Excelent video, I like it. I hope learn play the guitar, but at the moment I've subscribed.
Thanks for your comment. That's a good idea too, I will try to add that in future.
finally i found this tutorial. but my problem is i dont have a loop pedal. im looking for a cheapest loop pedal any suggestion?
finally i found this tutorial. but my problem is i dont have a loop pedal. im looking for a cheapest loop pedal any suggestion?
Thankkkss
Good stuff
Thanks man!
You're the best :D
brother can you talk about pick up you are using for looping for internal sound?
Hey Lee... first.. thanks for that super cool Video... it helped me a lot.
Question: how do you get the volume of the loop mic so high? I have that Boss RC1 guitar and mic plugged in and the mic is ways to quiet. I need to scream loud to hear a good quality in the loop...
Hey, thanks for your comment. Glad you found the video useful. To be honest, I have the opposite problem with the RC-30. I have the mic level on about a quarter and it's easy as loud as my main mic and the volume control is super sensitive. Maybe try a different mic, that could be the problem?
I wonder for how long have u been playing guitar?? coz ur amazing at it
Thanks
Are you going into a daw and video software and syncing,, your teaching is the best
Could you please do sing by Ed Sheeran that would be really helpful thank you. I love your vids as they are really helpful
Thanks mate need help with that
Thank u
Lee could you make a tutorial about sing, I've been trying the loop and the drum part is just taking me so long XD
Great tutorial, Lee. May i ask how do you record your loop tutorials and covers? What DAW or interface do you use?
Cheers Ray! I use a Line 6 Toneport UX8 which for some reason they don't make any more and my DAW is Cakewalk Sonar X3 when I'm using my PC.
Thank you for the quick reply. I use Focusrite Solo and Pro Tools/Audition. The problem is that when i record, the guitar snare is quite a bit loud and the guitar bass drum is quiet. How do you fix this one?
Hello, this is a really good tutorial thank you very much.
I have a question: Do you loop the chords as well? Because I'm using a boss rc30 and I can't loop the chords. I think it's because the chords take longer than the other loops, it's starts to loop before I've played all the chords. Can you please help me out? Thank you
milainfj 1 If you want the chords to loop with the other loops then play everything else for longer eg twice or four times and the chords just once
Lee mate, have a go at Knopflers " privateering":)
Could u do like a stunning tutorial part for this, it’s really hard to pick up
YESSS NICE :D
Thanks for your comment :)
Does anyone knows what technique he is using on the 13 min?
Thank YOU!!!!
Can you make Bloodstream Next?!
I've been asked for that one quite a lot so I'll give it a go soon! Thanks for your comment :)
Nice tutorial could I just ask what string you put your 1st finger on for the beginning loop? Thanks
Hey thanks so much. The first finger goes on the B string for the first loop
Lee Townsend Thanks 😊
SO MUCH COOLER WHEN ON LOOP
I have the RC-1 loop pedal, so i always need to press twice to stop the loop. Is there some kind of pedal/footswitch that i can plug in to the loop pedal so that i can stop and start with just one footpress? Can't find an answer anywhere on the internet :/
Geta better loop pedal
Thank you for nice and perfect tutorial!
I have one question. How do you make bass drum so loud? I am trying to copy this song and other Ed’s songs with looper ,but I cannot make only bass drum louder. Drum sound become always quieter than normal guitar sound. Please help me!
Hey, thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure if you're referring to the bass drum sound on the guitar or using the mic to beatbox. With regards to guitar, I have 2 pickups installed in mine which make my sound a lot bigger, particularly when I play live shows. The magnetic pickup you can see in the soundhole is the one which picks up the strings of the guitar and there's another under the bridge. It's this bridge pickup which mainly picks up the "bass drum" sound and as it has its own cable from the guitar, I'm able to control its volume separately from the rest of the guitar.
If it's the beatbox sound you're trying to enhance... Well, I'm terrible at beatboxing so I can't really help. One thing I do tend to do is use a "BO" sound rather than a "BU" sound. I don't know if that will help but it's worth throwing out there.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Thank you so much!
I was talking about drum sound from guitar.
So I need to install another pickup... which pickup is best to make bass drum sound like Ed make? I found out that Ed’s model guitar has SONITONE pickup from fishman.
That's handy to know. What's the guitar you have? Does it have a pickup built in already?
Lee Townsend yes it has.
Guitar is GD-5KOAOMES from Merida extreme.
he's not a rapper, he's a singer with a flow
Hey man, could i say this is the best tutorial of one the best songs to play on a looper ;-)
Just one thing if you could tell me, i'm a beginner guitarist and just wanted what should i learn to make up my own original stuff like his?
Learn improvisation and classical
Really good, but have some confidence in yourself
What are the names of the loops you use?
How do i tune according to this song, no tutorial anywhere
Where you at??? I miss your videos bro!!!☹️
About to have a baby dude. Well, my wife is but you know what I mean...
Will be back as soon as I can 😎
i cant figure out how to do those first set of chords while muting the higher strings. can anyone help me out?
Nevermind. Getting my finger at the right angle to mute the lower strings has just been tricky to get right
10:50 i cant understand that technique please tell me the name of technique
There’s not really a technique there he’s putting his finger to cover all frets and just hits the top two for the beggining chords and when he goes down just holds down the high 3 strings to get the last chord going . I hope this helps
@LeeTownsend what taylor guitar are you using for this song?
618e from 2014
What mic is that?
fucking legend for making this! just a tip with the beat boxing and even the snare using the guitar. try to relax you look super uptight. the more you relax and have fun with the things your uncomftable with the better and eaiser it gets
can you theoretically do this with just an rc1?
Yep, only 1 channel needed so you could essentially do it with almost any looper
Hello,
I have recently purchased zoom G1Xon guitar multi effect pedal. But i don't know what other accessories required to set up with acoutic guitar. Please help me out.
Harshit jain have the same pedal, great little thing. Do you have a pickup? Might help!
Hey there! I have never used the pedal you're referring to but Dans Covers made the most important point. Does your acoustic guitar have a pickup? (i.e. can you plug it in?)
No I have no pick up, which pick up is better for this?
The soundhole pickup I'm using is an LR Baggs M1 Active which is actually ridiculously cheap at the moment at Thomann. I paid around €250 for it and it's now almost €100 cheaper than that. You can find the page here www.leetownsend.com/lrbaggs-m1active/
