How to tone yellow, brassy or orange hair with blue or purple dye! THIS ACTUALLY WORKS

- Here's a quick tutorial on how to use a purple or blue hair dye to tone brassy orange or yellow hair. It often works better than toner as the dye is more pigmented, so its especially great if you have dark brassy tones that wont budge!
I AM NOT A HAIRDRESSER Anything I do is from trial and error and experience and a fair bit of common sense!
Keep in mind the colour of the mixture and how long you leave it on for will depend on the colour of your hair.
-- If your hair is more yellow than brassy I'd recommend using more of a purple colour as the blue is likely to turn it slightly green rather than ashy. --
I used Schwarzkopf Live Color Ultra Bright Electric Blue and L'Oreal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Clay Re-Balancing Conditioner.

FAQs
How long should I leave it in for? Really depends on the ratio you’ve mixed, your hair consistency etc. It’s all trial and error but keep an eye on it. Start off with just a drop of dye and lots of conditioner!
Will it go green? Not if you rinse it out in time! You can see where I was taking ages with the brush on the first section of Hair I did it went slightly green but that’s because I was taking my time for video purposes. Also the green does wash out!
What if my hair is orange and blonde?
Start off with the darkest parts first. They will take longer to develop. If you have any really blonde bits I’d recommend leaving it or washing it all in last minute before rinsing. Or use a more purple coloured mixture otherwise the blonde may go green. As long as you keep an eye on the colour you should be fine.
Can I use any blue dye? Yes. As long as you dilute it with conditioner.

I had some manic panic blue left over from dying my daughter hair and some cheap conditioner made it a super light blue/purple and thanks to that no more brass/orange I’m so happy would have never thought to do this until watching this video, amazing!!Thank you so much girlie!!!

This is gorgeous! I love how it doesn't damage your hair either (if anything, it conditions it). And you can make it once and store for later. Just gotta make sure not to add too much of the dye. Thanks for the simple tutorial!

This is the best video I’ve seen so far. I just recently got my hair dyed two days ago and it turned out a really orange/yellow color which is not what I wanted, so for the past few days I’ve been looking on how to tone the orange into an ashy color, and your end result was exactly what I was looking for. I'm really excited to try this out! I've been trying to find different ways to get my hair less brassy without having to pay an arm and a leg with product's that don't even work usually! You have given me hope, LOL. I just did a home bleach highlights job and it is ORANGE. Luckily I have some Poseidon Arctic Fox color to use over it, and their diluter (I think I could have just used the much cheaper Suave white conditioner, tbh). Wish me luck!
I love you. I went to an ebony store today and was about to leave with the powder that lightens my hair 7 shades quickly but the ladies there told me to change it out for a different pack .. knowing my better judgement I did it ... and my hair turned out ORANGE AFFFF I was pissed cos I know they did this on purpose !! Yes I do this. Mix a normal amount of shampoo with a teaspoon of dye, mix til dark blue and then shampoo my dry hair with it like it hair dye and let it sit for 2 minutes. Perfect ashey brown hair without the buildup many purple shampoos have.
Do not leave it on longer for 2 minutes if your hair is brown or it will turn raven-ish and charcoal.
I just want to say that I think you saved my life. I'm going to try it soon maybe tomorrow and hope that it's enough to take my brassy ugly orange color out of my hair and make it more ashy

It does work but just as with regular haircolor it just washed away and back to orange when i did my regular wash
Overall it went well but you have one green streak. It’s because I guess you had 1 streak there that was lifted to yellow. My advice is to mix a tiny bit of violet

Watching this in 2018. The beauty store where I got my Violet dye suggested I could use a 6% vol developer. Would that work just as fine?

that hair was probably not as orange as the rest of her hair so it shows the blue more. I have uneven blonde right now (some hairs are lighter) so I'll have to be careful and avoid my light/non-brassy hair when doing this

It worked on the ends of my hair not on the top, did again but left it on for abit longer on top. apart from you could see a hint of blue when that washed out it never really went back to the bright orange it was so I’d say it worked well thankyou 😄
Can I apply blue hair directly over the orange? Must I use the conditioner? I want my orange to completely blend into my black hair so don't mind it going dark

Hi thanks for the video I have black hair and I bleached the ends of my hair and it's more of a orange ginger brassy colour now. Would u recommend the blue or purple. I was thinking the purple alone :/
Tia Ly if it's more orange I'd go for blue but the best thing you can do is get blue and purple and mix it just to add that slight bluer tint. purple has a lot more pink in which can make it more of a pink orange colour, if your hair is quite light and more yellow the purple should do it xx

Tia Ly no thats only where I left it in too long on that side,you can see that's where I first applied it with the brush then ended up using my hands to apply it quicker lol. I make my mixture quite coloured so I only have to leave it on a few minutes and just wasn't quick enough applying for the sake of the video lol. but no it won't go more green as the dye fades out xx

Tina Peanuts hey! Blonde works best with purple dye and orange works best with blue, I'd get a dye which is a purple blue live and various other brands do them! Best to apply to the darkest areas first then blend up to the blonder bits otherwise you'll end up with purple hair and the rest just toned ☺️ x

Does it have to be semi permanent???
I brought permanant live mercury blue and the color creme is white so im thinkihg the answer is yes. The color needs to be semi permanant.
It didn't work on me. I did use colour run remover a week ago so it was an orange colour stripped bare?

if i will do this once in a month each time i should by another pack of hair dye? i will try this method. i have orange blond hair, hope it works.
Because its in a tube with a lid I just use the same dye rather than buying a new one each time you can just use it til it runs out, I tend to get a sealable pot and mix it in there and keep a stock for future use if it even needs it :)

I recently used a bleach spray on my naturally dark brown/raven hair and the colour looks very reddish in the daylight - this is absolutely not what I wanted. Can I still use blue dye and conditioner to get rid of the brassiness? And if so, how long do I leave it on for?

poppy2908 nope just conditioner. Basically you use the colour you want and then the conditioner dilutes it down so it's more of a tint than a dye :)

Caroline J. Use a color wheel to figure out what color you want to cancel out. For example, if you have brown hair with lots of orange in it you will want to use a blue dye because it is the opposite of orange on a color wheel. If you have blonde hair and you want to get rid of yellow try using a purple dye to cancel it out. If you have both, mix blue and purple dye together. Or you could use a manic panic color that is a blueish purple. Hope that helps! :)

Michelle Daugherty yeah it's difficult to tell at first but once you get the right consistency it gets easier! Also try a bit of washing up liquid and leave it in a few mins blue should come out a lot more x

@@rachelv9927 did you start with orange hair or yellow hair? Mixing a blue color to yellow creates green hues, if you start with more yellow brassy color you use violet/purple, if you have more orange brassy hair then you use a more blue color.
mona ll it was a little orange. Then I used the toner and made it more yellow. I just ended up giving up and coloring it purple lol I couldn’t figure it out. And didn’t want to waste more money.

+Gedusa shampoo won't be as good as it will wash off any residue of the dye trying to stick to the hair x

Sana Zeeshan between 1 and 3 weeks. you can always make a big batch and put it. in a container then apply it sort of once a week like a conditioner :) x

So I tried it with Splat Blue Envy and it does work but, I had to do it a couple times to get the right consistency for it to actually change my hair color. My orange hair wasn't as light as the girl in the video's, probably a shade or 2 darker but it did turn ashy (:
