love that it's being donated to Alice Coopers Solid Rock... that's awesome.
If only Gibson put this much work into building the entire guitar.
They take the time to ensure that every headstock has the same chance of breaking.
They used to...
@AntonDC Mine either. Funny what happens when you keep them in their proper cases and you don't abuse them!
That's a common misconception. I've been working on them since the '70s and the quality has always been all over the place. A ton of handwork goes on at Gibson and not every employee is a master. I've had my hands on Gibsons from the 40's through today and there are great ones, mediocre ones, and awful ones from every decade. They actually do ship some great instruments today - and they ship stuff that should have stopped at the dumpster outside their factory. That's why if you're smart... if you want a new Gibson, you'll forget buying online and play and inspect before you buy.
@Tioga Fretworks Agreed, buy them from a store, play them, get a great one because they still make great ones and crap ones, not all mediocre ones.
Duuuuuude. 0:54 that Semi-Hollow Tele with claw mark F-Holes is fantastic!
Here's a video a customer made. ua-cam.com/video/FkA__8tR7I4/v-deo.html Jump to about 9:00 for close ups.
I didn't notice that at first, too busy looking at the Dimebag. Have to agree the F-Hole design is really good.
You’re not kidding, that thing is bad. I want one
That was amazing, he did a fantastic job with the camera work seeing how busy of a job the repair itself was.
my question is.. is the glue easy to clean up? wasn't clear during the video :P
hobo johnson he literally said just wipe it with a damp paper towel
Thats the joke
Yeah, I was confused about that too. I also really wanted to know whether the neck is stronger now because of said glue? Haha, thanks for this neat video and for being so stand up about what was an otherwise unfortunate situation!
Michael Furman
There are a couple different types of TiteBond...the blue label sold in stores is perfectly fine. It cleans so easily with a damp rag since it is water-based. The trick is to get contact on all surfaces...shaved toothpicks or pipecleaners help push glue all the way into the crack. As long as you clamp properly and allow proper curing time (longer in more humid weather), the join will be stronger than the wood.
and i still tryin to figure out is the glue used by many luthier around the world :P
One of those videos that will be referred to for years and years. Thanks.
What an Awesome job he did on that neck Phill, great video luv watching these thank You for your time, Cheers
Thanks Tim , Harry and Atomic Guitar Works that was fantastic!
That neck repair was amazing. I've always wondered how they repair them. Great work from those guys and thanks for vid.
This video is great, thanks to all the people involved and specially Tim for taking the time to explain everything he is doing!
"I have every color of black in one can"
lol I love it!
What a great shop! Fantastic work.
Wow, that's an amazing repair. You'd never know it was broken. They did a fantastic job, well done! It was nice of you to show their work Phil, these guys clearly know their gear
Great video, I love watching these repair videos, always discovering new things for my tech arsenal. Thanks!
Amazing, congrats to everyone involved and especially to you for the great gesture.
Great video. After watching I reached out to Harry via phone about my rg350 with a broken headstock. He was very nice and I hope they can help me. Thanks Phil for all the great things you do for all us musicians.
Yawn...
Love that shop! Very nice video, Phil! I love repair videos.
Very cool to see such a common repair that so many are really afraid of get fixed quickly and perfectly!!! Keep doing what you doing Phillip!!!
It is a common repair, however this case was actually a fairly uncommon break. Most of the breaks are just at the back of the headstock referred to as the headstock smile. This one is the easiest of this type of neck break to repair due to the length of the break and location. That gave a HUGE surface area to glue. Most headstock/neck breaks aren't that nice and are a lot more difficult to repair. Many times, the breaks end up breaking the headstock veneer, and the gluing surface area is quite small. Just glue and clamps won't cut it on many of them. Then the touch-up becomes something of nightmarish.
I've seen hundreds of these videos, but never cease to be amazed at how well these repairs usually turn out. Great stuff!
Simply the best shop in the valley. Awesome guys and superb work.
Thanks for making these videos. I started working at a pretty well known custom guitar company a couple of months ago, and these videos really help me get better at my job.
That's such an amazing repair, you can't even see that it was broken.
Sharpen My Axe is one of the best series on UA-cam. Thank you, Phil!
Great video. I have an Epi LP Custom that's been sitting around, then I watched this video (and #5 where it got broken). It inspired me to pull out my Epi and play it. Such a great instrument! You're doing us guitar people a great service!
It's so cool when you see genuine enthusiasts for the instrument. All these Sharpen my Axe videos are great. I've learned a ton and really appreciate the time and knowledge that you share. All the best to you in 2019!
Mr. McKnight,
Thank for all you do for this channel, the donation of the guitar for the next generation of musicians, and your honesty and integrity. And please thank the gentlemen at Atomic Guitars for time, energy, and kindness. Be blessed sir!!!
Very nice job Phil. I love giving back. You are a good soul.
Super great idea. Keep up the good work of helping young musicians
I've gone from not having a clue about how to work on guitars to an effective amateur luthier watching Phillip's Sharpen My Axe series! Thanks!
Yeah, same. Between Phil and Dave's World of Fun Stuff, there's not much i'm too afraid to try. Saves a lot of money on tech work if you can do it all yourself.
Brian Stewart up.
Luthier? Thats a very big word, even with amateur before it. Maybe amateur guitar tech suites more.
Great series. I love that the guitar didn't go to waste.
So cool to see good old fashioned skills and pride in work being used to help a charity. Really impressed with everyone on this video. Awesome.
Restoring a classic Les Paul to its former glory! You are the man!
Great job, Phil, Tim, and Harry! Giving kids the gift of music - I love it!
Phil, I have learned so much from your channel. I also want to thank you for making it family friendly. This morning I was watching your videos with my 6 year old, and he started asking questions about acoustic and electric guitars. It's great to learn together.
I did this to a BC Rich recently. I found one I wanted in a pawn shop and the scarf joint was coming apart. I just glued it sanded it wiped on some minwax wipe on ploy, it was not a finished neck, and sanded that down with some super fine sandpaper and done.
Killer repair video!!! I totally dig this very cool.
Love the tip for cutting fret slots! The number 1 things almost all factories get wrong that effects playability and tuning more than anything. Great repair vid.
Best repair I've seen! Ever! job well done!
Fantastic video. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video.
Terrific all around! Loved the thorough description he gave of his work!
Great work by Atomic. Really cool of you all to donate the time and materials
It was fascinating to watch the process of the repair (super job!). Great video - thanx!
End to end Awesomeness - Thanks Phil & Atomic Guitar Works
Excellent video!!! As always your Sharpen your Axe vids are full of excellent information!!
You’re one of the most legit people I’ve ever seen, thanks for all your time, effort, and money to make content!

Glad to see that Vincent is giving back to the community, such a class guy
I've never stopped playing but for sure got lazy over the last 10 years. I'm really enjoying this show dude it's like counting cars for the guitar. It's breathing life in to my fingers again the misses and my son have guitar stuff up to their eyebrows but we're all enjoying it. Love you bro keep it coming.
That's some nice work he did on that guitar. It's pretty cool that a guitar can be repaired from that kind of damage.
you are the MAN phillip mcknight ! great job !
Incredibly informative and thoroughly enjoyable video! Well done Phillip!
Thanks! This video was very clear and helpful. I just noticed a crack in the neck of my LP in a pretty similar way that I need to fix.
Hey Phil, This is my favorite out of all your work. It was fun to watch and a lot of us learned some new tricks, plus having the guitar go to someone who can’t afford their own is very cool. Thank for sharing with all of us.
Nice fix. The way it was broken, was a blessing as he pointed out.
Awesome! Whoever ends up with it is going to have a very cool story to go along with it. Thanks Phil!
Awesome. Glad to see this guitar gets a new life and to a good cause.
KIller video! Great cause that will help keep guitar alive! Nice job Phil!
Great work, Phillip! Love seeing guys use guitars to build bridges and bless people. God bless!
That's a great gift for any young aspiring musician to learn on, well done Phil and Tim and Harry at the Atomic Guitar Works.
great great to see this repair... your start -to-finish showing was filled with insight, product guidance, and instruction; to JUST the extent I am seeking. I feel much better equipped to handle a similar repair.
The "Sharpen my Axe" series has been so fun to watch.... but i think this one is my favorite of them.... you're a good guy, Phil
God! One of the most fascinating videos on the subject. Phil & Tim, very impressive! Looking forward to more!
Kudos! Great job and way to give back! Thanks Phil
Great job Phil. God bless you and your family.
So cool. I’m a huge Alice Cooper fan and love what he’s doing for kids
I love Atomic Guitars. I had a 1995 Washburn Dimeslime that some previous owner tried to "fix" the headstock with bondo. It eventually snapped again, and I sent it to Atomic. They did a WONDERFUL job repairing it and making it stronger than it ever was!
Phil that was a great video, my 9 year old daughter watched it with me to the very end and was amazed at the results too. You have now expanded your viewer demographic! Lol. Kudos to Atomic, great job!
I really love what you did with this guitar, from giving Bob a replacement, to donating the repaired original. Another worthy recipient for a future donation might be Guitars 4 Vets.
What an awesome soul you are, Phil !!!
My headstock on my les Paul special recently broke clean off it was my favorite it’s cool to see them getting fixed!!
Wow Phil, everything about this is great. please keep up the great work!
Tim!!! What a great guy. Good on ya, mate! Not to mention, good on ya, Phil :)
Great vid Philip, and for a good cause. Very satisfying to watch that neck getting fixed by someone who knows what they doing.
Very educational. Love your vids. Keep up the great work!
My 66 Gibson Melody Maker needs a major overhaul. I’d say it’s a fine candidate for this series. I’m hooked!!!
Kudos to you, Phil! What a great gesture! I already loved your videos but I'm a fan for life after seeing such a wonderful and kind act! Rock on, Phil! \m/
GREAT vid, Phil, Tim and everyone else!
