- STARGATE ATLANTIS was never meant to end with that final episode, "Enemy at the Gate," with the Ancient city on the surface of Earth. Producers hoped for a sixth season, and after the show was cancelled a script was written for a direct-to-DVD movie called "Stargate: Extinction."
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate," ATLANTIS writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi talks about what was in the works for the show's future during the fifth season - which ended up surprisingly being the show's last. There was a suggestion to tack "Extinction" onto the production of Season 5, which if the show was cancelled would give them a movie already in the can. Or, if it was renewed by Syfy Channel, "Extinction" would become a 2-parter to kick off another year.
Joe also shares some of the storyline for "Extinction," which would have seen Atlantis on a wild, time-travel trip back to the Pegasus Galaxy. And he explores another story he hoped to tackle in a sixth season, which would have brought back another villain in a big way.

So often the go to show when people talk about untimely cancellations is Firefly. And while I agree it was unfair, for me, Atlantis ending abruptly was harder to accept.
OH MY GOODNESS yeah.
And they cancelled it for Stargate: Universe of all things!!!!! Why would anyone cancel a show only to start up another show that takes place in the same universe? It makes no sense and I'm still bitter about it. lol

Didn't care about Firefly. Which is why it was canceled because it didn't have that many audience, just some vocal few. However stargate had a ton more so it's cancelations were really baffling and idiotic
And we got SGU instead. I'm always saddened by the cancellation of Atlantis.
God had to free Jason Mamoa some how.
And they didn't even do universe well

@@eternallylearning2811 they did. Just rewatched SGU last week and no other show made me goosebumb that often. The series was just ahead of its time, came at a stupid airtime and it was simply something unusual for Stargate. The characters shouldn't come across as a third SG1 after the Atlantis team was already so similar to the SG1. I loved the shows feeling...
Fans treatment of SGU was basically like your buddy in work being fired and then everyone shuns their replacement, like its their fault. The result was no Stargate for anyone and the franchise being put on ice for over a decade, well done fans. SGU was a very well made show and in some ways was better than the first two. Its an absolute tragedy people rejected it, it had so much potential.

An origin series on the wraith with Todd as the main character would be awesome! Since we know that Todd is at least 10 000 years old, he would make a crazy good story!
Not necessarily. Wraith spend a good portion of their lives in hibernation, and they don't seem to have much of a society outside of what we see them doing in-show. It'd be like some old dude telling you about the restaurants he's been to over the course of his life except it's some old dude telling you about the different planet he's been to draining people of their life force.

@@WorldWalker128 you cannot build hyperdrive ships if you dont have much of a society, Though they have the characteristics normal society like other civilizations, doesn't mean they dont have much of a society. We know that they evolved from Alterans mixed with the dna of wraith bugs or the evolution of wraith bugs mixed with alteran dna... either way, it's an intriguing lore to explore!.

I always loved SGA, except its end. The Vanirs should have been a full season antagonists, instead of being rushed in a double episodes. And we never had a real closure on the Wraiths in Pegasus.
A 6th season would have been better than a film, especially to better set up SGU, just like SG-1's season 7 was used to set up SGA.
And as someone who hates time travel stories, I'm not a fan of Extinction's story.
It comes as a complete shock when a show is cancelled, and you ask, why? It was doing really well and there didnt seem to be any constructive reason for cancellation.

@@husker6395 I think it had more to do with the rebranding of the SciFi channel to SyFy and change in management. If you recall, on Friday nights they ended up eliminating all of the SciFi shows and in their place broadcast several hours of WWE (yes, that WWE, as in wrestling).
Another time travel story? I’m glad the movie wasn’t made. So many dropped plots in Atlantis. I’m still shocked they made SU with the handling of Atlantis.
They already showed that they can't do time travel stories they MISSED the best series FIX in SgA history when they did the recreation of the first episode why everyone dieing and Dr Weir traveling back in time to fix it and then die as she comes out of the statis pod -- the fix would have been have the time traveling Dr Wier be the original Blonde actress meeting the Other Dr Weir.
That would have completely explained the change in actress as an time anomaly.
never over the fact they basically got rid of atlantis to make way for two seasons of sgu which i could barely get through. not so much bc of the story, but bc of most of the characters. i would of liked that s6 set up for sgu tho like atlantis had in sg1

SGU was supposed to be the "sexy" stargate, which I never got...but I thought eli was a great character, I completely related to him because he ended up being smarter than the people he looked up to
@@aliengranpa i didn't understand the whole 'sexy stargate' concept they tried to do either. i read somewhere they tried to make it look more appealing to a younger crowd. not to mention watching it gave me motion sickness
i think i only liked two characters in the whole show that was meant to be more 'character based'

Two comments: First, I wish that they had never mothballed SGA. It still had a lot of life and crossover appeal left in it and the cancellation was premature. Second, despite what some say -- I loved SGU. Though I didn't appreciate it much when it aired as I was travelling a lot for work at the time and kept missing out on the shows. But a couple years ago I streamed SGU from beginning to end and really enjoy the stories and growth in the characters. I will admit, parts of season 1 moved a bit slowly and took some effort to get through. Nonetheless, season 2 of SGU was a fantastic joy to consume and was really setting up the series for longevity.
Too bad SyFy (not the beloved SciFi) had other plans and cancelled nearly all sci-fi shows and started showing WWE (yes wresting!) on Friday nights instead of what grew the channel in the first place. The management of the rebranded SyFy were idiots and justified it at the times as the "Fy" in SyFy being Fantasy, and said that WWE was indeed fantasy and was the perfect fit for the channel. I have not watched SyFy for years. I have no idea what shows they produce (if any) these days. The old SciFi channel and its management that brought us Farscape, SG1, SGA, SGU, BSG, Caprica, DrWho, Being Human, Continuum, and many many other great sci-fi shows will always have a place in my heart.

WTF? So MGM said no to Extinction cause "the DVD market bottomed out?" You mean to tell me that they honestly believed Stargate, a franchise with one of the largest fan bases in the world....who knew there wasn't going to to a 6th season...wouldn't buy a stand alone to conclude season 5 which left us all hanging?
SGA was my new firefly... and even though it was 100 episode, I still felt that same sting when they took the sky from me.
I often wondered what the Stargate Atlantis: Extinction film would've consisted of 🤔 especially as the mega hive would've been hard to top in just one hour and a half film 🤔

This is a scene reading from the movie with some of the actors... It had Shephard SHAKING TODDS FEEDING HAND AS FRIENDS. I can't get more depressed about it.
I currently was flipping through Pluto TV, you can tell the demographics are older people, but Stargate Atlantis was #5 on the most watch TV shows, and Stargate SG-1 was #6.
Todd was a favorite... the humor, if you can call it that. This series was killed prematurely.
Michael's survival could easily be explained by cloning himself.
Beckett thought he was the original, Michael could do the same, the clone died, not the original.
It was also explainable that he managed to survive the fall and swam to shore.
"What am I your realtor Rodney?" Still love rewatching SGA (Before I sleep season 1) and this line is an example why SG was so popular.
I would have liked a 6th season... but i do appreciate having some closure on what they had planned... thank you!

There's even a novel where you get to learn more about Ronon and his time as a runner.. Or how about the LAST ancient outpost in the galaxy, filled with real life, breathing ancients..?
Todd imprisoned at the end of atlantis & fed a steady stream of convicts ?Always wondered whether he would make it back to pegasus and where atlantis would end up .Really rushed the finale & left too many unanswered questions which hopefully some may be answered in the new forthcoming series.Closure on SGU is also badly needed.
Babylon 5 was the only show that was planned from beginning to rhe end. They were able to create a perfect story.
Well, it may have been planned, but the studio was constantly threatening to cancel it, causing Straczynski massive amounts of grief, wondering if he was going to have to condense his story. In the end, he managed to tell the whole story, but he was terrorized every step of the way.
@@Apollonos Money always beats art. I still remember when they canceled Farscape. They killed off the 2 main characters then said it was the last episode. Then happened before the internet and people weren't to happy. The fans basically forced them to create Peacekeeper Wars to end the show right.
@@Batalia122 Yeah, that was a rare win for the fans. Usually, studios just cancel a series and leave the fans hanging. We got lucky for once.
In reality, the planned storyline of B5 was brought forward to the end of season 4 because that is all the PTEN network could survive. TNT came in and resurrected the series before the broadcast end of Season 4. The front part of season 5 suffered for this and also because a lot of JMS' notes were thrown out by hotel staff at a convention in England. More setup episodes were planned to spread out the story that ended in season 4 into the first third of season 5.
It is crazy that the movie was cancelled because it doesn’t matter how dvd sales were going EVERY Stargate fan would have bought a direct to DVD Atlantis movie because they love the franchise. They wanted more. They still want more & would happily even buy an Atlantis movie now just for more content.
The "final episode" we need the most is for Stargate Universe (though there is a graphic novel that sort of functions as a season finale) but I would really have liked to see a movie for Stargate Atlantis too.
I feel like any future stargate show will be based off of SG1 but I really want more Atlantis 😭

I really like the treatment the novels gave Atlantis! By the end all issues are actually resolved & Pegasus is evenly split between humans & Wraith. If I recall, the Vanir were also done well.

There's a unrelated new series coming called Oceanus. Set at a possible end of world event with Marine Biologist and a underwater city.
Thought atlantis was a brilliant second show, they could have done so much with that show, for example when shepherd and his team were stuck on the dedalist ship which was being transported through different dimensions they faced a very interesting new alien who were very difficult to kill, they could have explored them a lot more
I think the Wraith are far too complex to portray in a movie. I would even go as far as to say that they were the most powerful adversary in the entire Stargate universe. A lack of cohesion was their greatest weakness. But characters like Michael, who have shown uncanny ingenuity dozens of times, would often steer the story in other directions. I would have wished for subsequent seasons that it would have been possible by means of Dr. Keller's treatment it would be possible to win the Wraith as allies in the end, because even the Ancients didn't manage to "eradicate" them...

I hate this planet.
Not much has really been learned about the Wraith. The weak point in their technology after the Aurora Mission, Steve not divulging any information, the computer worm of the temporary Wraith allies, etc. As a viewer, you had only a very limited insight into the Wraith culture and its possibilities.
What would make a good Wraith story that they never touch on is what would happen if a G'hould symbiote was to take a Wraith host, new re- occurring villain for stories about combining the 2 technologies.
Also how come when the SG1 captured the Anubis Kull warriors didn't they mass produce those energy neutralizing suits especially for Altantis personnel to beat the Wraith stun guns.

Please god no. That's the one thing I really disliked about SG-1 up till the Ori came when the big bad G'hould was defeated a new bigger even badder one popped up. A Wraith host would just continue that trend... (than again I'm not really a fan of most of the big bads in SG-1)

Was gutted when SGA was cancelled. Could never appreciate SGU because of how that cancellation went down. Sorry, but it was just a painful wound at that point. The Legacy novels - not my cup of tea at all, glad to hear a little bit about what the real creators/writers had planned. Thanks!!!
Todd is my favorite character.
They really started planning Season 6, not really knowing if it would happen, and had to write the Season 5 finale to tailor for both eventualities. Whereas SG1 Seasons 5, 6, 7 and 7 were all written to be the last, and then found they could do more.
Season 5 serves as a good final.
I was actually pretty disappointed with the way SGA was ended.
It felt incomplete.
In my oppinion, yeah, the final season SGA rush was not great... but I'm happy with it overall. We got a somewhat ending. We know they got back to earth.
But SGU was done in wrong... SGU was their best, in my oppinion... I'll never get over that loss... The daily episodic drama and tension... Everything about the 2 seasons was FUCKING PERFECT.
Fucking perfect, no other show can produce that tightly arranged and unique situation the all faced... it was just the best...
But... if SGU wasnt cancelled, we wouldn't have got the best Rumplestiltskin ever...

Once Atlantis arrived on Earth, any story that had it returning to Pegasus would seam absurd. There is no way the IOA would let the most advanced city full of ancient tech return to a hostile galaxy, when they had easy access to it right on earth.
Unfortunately it can't be made as all the cast look too much older now unless they set it as much later rather than a direct continuation. Plus they'd never get Mamoa back, he's too high ticket now and would probably consider it beneath him.

Personally I would have done a story called Stargate Pegasus war. I would have done a jump forward 5 years and Earth is in alliance with the Travellers and Gini and a bunch of other races and groups slowing wiping out the Wraith one hive at a time.
But unbeknown to how crew, Micheal have been secretly infecting their troops with a dormant retro virus that turns humans in hybrid and then kills them after a few weeks. The wraith already got to many mouths to feed, so putting in a time to kill the hybrids make sense.
Todd has been working on a new synthetic food source, having seen the humans not only have superior technology, they have the numbers, resources and superior strategies to win the war in the long term.
It all ends in a peace treaty, the wrath agree to use the new synthetic food and only operate in a designated terrictory, the Gini and Travelers agree to not attack them any longer.
Earth force the agreement on them by only promising to release the cure to Micheal Plague if they agree to abide by the deal.
I just recently found out David is actually American. I had no idea how far Stargate actually reached. When it was on tv I always though it was a Canadian series broadcast mainly in Canada. I figured any broadcasts in the US were largely over looked by American audiences. Glad to know I couldn't have been more wrong. Who knows, maybe Amazon will do something amazing with the franchise. We call all only hope at this point.

I wish we got more Stargate Atlantis.
TBH atlantis could come back, I would start with a series based in the milkyway again say atlants was sent back to pegasus, referencing the events of extinction, the a few seasons in Go to atlantis and use it as a backdoor pilot to get it rebooted. Then rap up universe with atlantis/newshow.
I had bought all dvd’s series movies. Everything. Still got them.

As a fan of all of the Stargate franchise and films I'd just like to know, was it not profitable, what happened that ended Stargate?
Stargate was a billion-dollar franchise for MGM. The ultimate end circa 2010-2011 was a confluence of the studio's bankruptcy, new execs at Syfy wanting to shift the network's creative direction (away from traditional science fiction), diminishing ratings (and IMO programming mismanagement that accelerated this), and the collapse of the direct-to-DVD market.
It was a situation where Stargate needed someone inside MGM to fight for it when a new regime came in, and that person wasn't there. Without a partner at Syfy, the franchise just went onto the shelf.

A excellent opening for a SGA movie would be SG Command calling in Shepard, find Rodney and Sam already there, and being shown a video taken by a drone in Pegasus, where you see someone running like hell down a mountain, pursued by a bunch of wraith, Shepard saying he feels for the guy but what does it have to do with them when the drone zooms and its Lt. Ford being chased, and suddenly the wraith get ambushed and wiped out and Rodney is telling the techs to zoom back in on Ford, and Fords eye and face are normal again.
Just a thought on why they would go back...Shepard doesn't leave his people behind...
Saving the Destiny crew via a new planet to blow up would have been my direction.

Honestly, I wish SGU didn't existed. I never could understand why they thought that was going to be a good series, I didn't like the actors or the characters. I think the biggest problem for me was the story, it was hard to keep up and didn't like how the camera rolled.
I would trade season 6 for SGU any day.

How about a time adventure where the SG-1 uses the ancient time machine to go back to save the Asgard using the DNA from the Pegasus asgard. They could even set it up so it doesn't change the finale. They can go to the Asgard before they give their legacy to earth and work it out so when they beam away and plow up the planet that they're not actually on the planet when it blows up and earth doesn't find out till after the Ori are defeated.
I am a new stargate fan from India. Need more spinoffs for Stargate. It is one of the most unexplored universe. It has lot of potential to introduce very powerful alien races from other galaxies.
Need more Mallozzi shows especially now with all the Junk on TV now
I like the concept of Atlantis' population turning into hybrids, but part of me is glad that it didn't happen. Michael was a fun and interesting character at first, but it felt like the writers didn't know what to do with him, and he lacked the charisma of Todd or Ba'al to keep him interesting.
Part of me is sad that Stargate was never as popular as Star Wars or Trek, because it would've been fun to see this story in comic or novel form.

The entire Michael storyline was an interesting IDEA but the whole execution of the it was really bad. When I go back and rewatch the series I always skip it from the start of it to the end of it. Personally i was so happy when they were finished it and he was dead, and now when you hear he was probably going to come back it’s like, ok that’s dumb.
The wraith should have their own show. They are an awesome character.

Would have been stretching the “how many times can Atlantis break down between galaxies” boundaries though.
The Teyla centric stories KILLED Atlantis for me. I'm glad this nightmare didn't happen. Todd on the other hand, might just be my favorite character from any show that I have ever seen. Him and Sheppard in that prison together was very powerful. Hit very close to home for me. I was very surprised at how much that stirred my emotions. Very rare for any show, ever, to do that to me.
I was sad when they ended it, but grateful to read the books of the Legacy series where they had to take Atlantis back to Pegasus

@@bleuserenity7676 Stargate Atlantis: Legacy series there are many in it starting with a book called "Homecoming". It deals with plotlines such as, getting back to Pegasus, a new wraith threat, a member of the team being taken, Teyla looking deeper into her wraith heritage, Ronan thinking about his future and John too. The great thing about the books is that they bring a lot of older characters back too. I got them as Amazon ebooks

I had thought they were leading into a new enemy... but they canceled it.
I believe there were plans to revisit them in Season 6. We might do a video on this, but Joe on his blog has revealed a lot about the stories he was hoping to tell.
They appeared in a novel if I recall, but I don't remember the name of it
I can see why they changed it for the final movement the storyline that they describe sort of felt like a mid-season episode not a grand finale rap above the series

The “pandemic” changed things for our family. When the pandemic hit, we stopped going to the movies, and started watching out Blu-ray library, and now years later we find ourselves with “backup 4K blue ray players” in a protected room. We’re back buying the latest Cinema movies, and the Library keeps growing. Expecting to purchase a new 8K TV in coming months, so for us it’s starting all over. We’re using streaming services, but you need several services to get to view all your personal choices. Side note, what’s with that keyboard entry you’re required, who designed that ? ?

It makes me feel pain to realize that season 6 did not happen.
I recall when Andromeda went with the time travel progenitor trope. & it wasn't very logical.

I would like to see the script be published for all to enjoy. JK Rowling did this with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I purchased and very much enjoyed reading it. That story made it into theatre as a play and was successful. The story is written for Extinction, let's get it published!

Just wondering why Atlantis was cancelled in the first place? It was dubbed number 1 show on Sy Fy channel on at least one year. Was it that the ratings were dropping, or was it getting too expensive to produce? SGU was no better on ratings, they were actually worse in long run and there were a lot of critics. Was SGU a lower budget series? It would have been great to have gotten one TV movie after Season 5 of Atlantis to wrap up a bit more. Although returning to earth was a decent conclusion on Season 5.
It was cancelled because people like you and me and all the SG fans mean nothing to the new world order string-pullers who clandestinely rearranged entertainment industries to funnel all their finances and attention to stupid people who like stupid things. Shows, movies, games, books, news, social media: all geared toward extreme leftist sheep who will be lifelong subservient non-critical-thinkers. An endless source of repeat business margins that never shrink, and the demand for creativity, talent, merit, and excellence can be gradually diminished. By 2030, all shows will be twitch stream clones with micro transactions and season pass subscriptions, digital banking required, with a universal message of global techno-marxism as the end goal for a “perfect happy utopian society.”
