I think this might be the ones most convenient to what he's about to explain. I imagine this being connected to American History e.g. The American Constitution.
I would like to see more examples being taken from across the globe rather than only United States. India is the largest democracy in the world, and it is fairly efficiently practiced in India considering its huge population. But I did not find any mention of India, or for that matter any other countries other US in your examples. Other than the small observation above, the tutorial is extremely good and explains every concept very clearly.
In Iceland there is so called participatory/pluralist Democracy but in fact Elitism is the real ruler. Just like in any other western nation. To really learn something you have to read about Mosca, Pareto and Charles Wright Mills.
Yes, I agree with you, but this is solemnly based on the US Government and politics because it falls under the course of AP US Government and Politics exam concepts. Khan Academy is used to help US students(or even worldwide students[based on curriculum]) understand courses taken by elementary, middle, and high schools of America.
What it means to represent the people? I think that's a biggest question... Is the people's interest resumed in the majority interest? Or one should like a "Pareto efficient" decision, considering the loss of individual wellbeing?
basically, democracy is something "for the people's rule" and there are 3 types of democracies the founding fathers have debated over, which are participatory, pluralist, and elite. Participatory:- Mr.Khan explained that the participatory democracy includes quite a bit of participation from the people. Positive effects could be a better representation of what the people want. And the negative would be that it would be too hard to discuss because imagine having 20 million people in a room to make a decision, it would be too insane and just impossible. Pluralist:- Pluralist democracy is the type where there are different parties (a bunch of people together in a group) with different interests. Positive effects could be that only good ideas from each group come to discussions(good ideas surface). Negative effects could be slow decision-making and too much debating. Elite:- Mostly educated people at higher levels to have a chance to participate in debates(less participation). Some positive effects could be that there would be more educated decisions and could be more decisive since it's a small group. And for the negative effects, they might not represent that person well, and their decisions might be for the benefit of them and their leveled people. this is basically what I understood from the video.

There is no democratic country. We have lobbies and corruption. What about a board of directors that works out different proposed solutions and votes on them. Only relevant or trend-setting topics similar to the previous election programs of the parties come to the vote. The people can of course also propose solutions. The board of directors decides independently on day-to-day business. These decisions can be revised by referendum.

Just read about Mosca, Pareto and Charles Wright Mills.
When you choose a representative, you are choosing someone to go and debate on your people's interests in the higher courts.

Did the articles of confederation reflect a participational or an elite democracy?
Can someone summarize this don’t get it

switzerland is a pretty effective direct democracy
why do i have to watch this in school
1st one
There is no democratic country.
We have lobbies and corruption.
What about a board of directors that works out different proposed solutions and votes on them.
Only relevant or trend-setting topics similar to the previous election programs of the parties come to the vote.
The people can of course also propose solutions.
The board of directors decides independently on day-to-day business.
These decisions can be revised by referendum.
