History of the Daiquiri | How to Drink

- Today I talk about the history of the Daiquiri and make it tow ways: an early roots version, and the way I enjoy it now.
The Daiquiri has been around a very long time. By one account it's named after Daiquiri beach near Santiago, Cuba, where miner's would enjoy these throughout the day to cool off. A guy by the name of Jennings Cox, an American engineer takes credit for the drinks invention, but that is almost certainly lies. Mixing rum, sugar, and lime, goes way way back before Ol' Jennings ever set foot on the island of Cuba. In fact, the word "Daiquiri" comes from Taíno origins and the beach might be more accurately named after the drink, rather than the other way around. The Daiquiri probably started its existence as something like a swizzle, which is the first version I make here. Then I shake up my favorite recipe for a daiquiri and have a damn fine time doing it.
Roots Daiquiri
• Fill glass with Crushed Ice
• Add 2-4 spoons sugar
• 1-2 limes of juice
• rum to taste
• swizzle & enjoy
Daiquiri
• 1 oz. or 30 ml. Demerara Simple Syrup
• 1 oz. or 30 ml. Lime Juice
• 2 oz. or 60 ml. Rum
• Shake & Strain

I like that barspoon, I may have to buzz by barfly, barkeep
ps finally you tell me I've been drinking daiquiri all these years wondering what one is, I'll fix one now, cheers!
How To Drink where do you buy Havana Club from? Doesn’t seem like you can get it in the U.S. due to the embargo. I’ve tried the seven year when a friend brought back some from Mexico. I would very much like to get a bottle!
Love these videos.. can you make an episode on good party drinks that can be made in batch.. i enjoy cocktails just not making 20 individual ones at time
How To Drink MORE HISTORY OF!!!
So ... Seems like it's a rum kamikaze. Kinda. Or a kamikaze is a vodka-triple sec version of a daiquiri.
*It's going to be one of "Those" episode*
You mean the drunken funny ones? Oh yeah. That's the good stuff.
Thank you for the ❤️ and the history lesson
Also known as the end of the shooting day episodes, where Greg has had quite a few drinks from previous episodes already. They're always great!
Is this one of those episodes where he’s already a few “episodes” in?🍸 🍹
100%
Oh, yeah.
No doubt.
Judging by the Dora rant, I'm gonna say yeah.
Us: How many episodes are you in Greg?
Greg: Yes.
You should do a whole episode on “pre-ice” drinks, if you haven’t already. Could be an interesting topic to dip your toes into.
Hopefully, he doesn't dip his toes into the drinks.
Kiera Todd Hopefully, the drink doesn’t dip into his toe like the Flaming Moe’s....
@Kiera Todd some people would be into that
Seeing Greg sloshed just absolutely makes my day, you can tell that he's seen so much Dora the Explorer and his brain is half gone by now
It’s gonna be one of “those” episodes.
Obi Wan voice: Yes, that’s why I’m here.
i made this tonight, the not-roots version. it's the first legit cocktail i've ever made. i've been really enjoying learning about cocktails from you, thank you for this channel, i think i have a new hobby now.
"one of those" means Greg is moderately toasted.
"Moderately" is being very generous.
I can't believe they didn't cast you as Backpack in the live-action Dora the Explorer. A damned shame.
I love your knowledge of Dora lore. I’m a grown ass adult but I went and saw the Dora movie with my girlfriend. It is a flawless film.
Are they in a computer though?!?
You know i hope we one day find out that all the subtitles are made by his wife and she just looks like shes always rolling her eyes at him.
0:08 I love it when its one of "those" episodes.
Paulo Teixeira he’s at least 3 episodes in
We'll get you the 3-year Havana Club next time Greg ;)
I’m not complaining here!
I'm guessing you get Marius to "import" a bottle whenever he goes to Europe?
@@Quintinohthree Europe? LOL Geography is SO not your strong suit.
@@trinitymorningstar6607 he’s referencing the trade embargo that makes Havana Club inaccessible in U.S Markets- meaning it has to be imported from countries that have free trade with Cuba. IE: lots of European countries where Havana Club is one of the most popular rums available.
Ah, old Jennings.
We took our eight year old son to Marco Pierre White's for lunch and 'cocktails' a few years ago. The youngster was merrily drinking his way through the list of virgin cocktails, and the sommelier took a bit of a shine to the family thanks to the wee'un's desire to keep up with his parents in the (rather expensive, virgin) cocktail drinking stakes.
My better half ordered a daiquiri and the sommelier decided to give us a potted history, "This is one of the most famous cocktails in the world, first made by Jennings Cox..."
My son, as quick as a lighting bolt said... "I wish he'd used his hands like anyone else."
The sommelier walked off, twitching as if he'd got an insect in his inner ear.
That young man will go far ! 🤣
@@barbarapugh5662 Luckily the daiquiri is shaken, rather than stirred.
You know you’re doing something right when you can get people such as myself, who don’t drink, to subscribe to your channel and watch every episode. One of the very best on UA-cam. Definitely Oscar nom worthy. Whether you win, I’d have to leave up to the judges, but you’ve got my vote.
Hey Greg, long time fan here (like been watching since before I could drink long time), I want you to know that because of you and this show I actually collected makeshift barware over the years (a rocks glass from a trip to the JD distillery, a pint glass from the dollar store with 10 basic recipes for cocktails {not using those ofc, you have covered them all so when I try them id rather your recipes, but its cute}, a stolen half a tin and hawthorn strainer from an Applebee's marg, a shot glass my girlfriend got me from her vacation from the Bahamas {cuz I don't have a jigger yet})
And with this contraption of a Bar I actually made Daiquiris for my D&D group, it was defiantly a first time deal but it was so much fun and what I liked was in the glass! I just want to thank you for introducing me to this wonderful world of cocktails as a proper hobby, I raise my glass to you sir!
Hey, a rum swizzle is just a roots daiquiri with two dashes of bitters and cinamon-sugar. Never thought of it like that
Im feeling way to proud of being highlighted, but damn I do love me a rum swizzle and hope for a video with a few variants to try out with my comrades
Long have we foreseen the return of Drunk Greg, and now it has come to pass.
Comes on screen: "Oh boy, It's gonna be one of "those episodes".
Me: *Clicks like
*fullscreens video
this channel is going to be my bible for drinks
That ending was one man’s rapid decent into madness. Greg is out here killing his liver for the content, much appreciated. 👍
Greg I really want to thank you for being on youtube as you have really opened up my eyes to a lot of drinks, and helped my grow as a "connoisseur" of drinks! Thank you for being here and making fun and interesting videos!!
Greg at the begining of the serie : "I've never worked in a bar, i don't give a damn about precision."
Greg now : "Ima double strain that dope beverage."
It's so funny seeing that old intro, it doesn't fit his approach at all lol
Quickly turned into my favorite channel on youtube. I actively try what's on this show and look forward to every new episode. Awesome job!
History of cocktails is my favorite type of Greg video
Greg. I really enjoy these episodes where we get a couple different ways to put together the drink. They're really informative and show off your relaxed and jovial attitude towards cocktails. Since you agreed to the Penicillin episode I've not stopped talking about it to friends. Thanks again for that! Have a smashing night!
Greg, you are my spirit animal and my hero. Thank you for making my day!
The Daiquiri is a perfect cocktail, a perfect vehicle for enjoying rum.
The latter daiquiri is definitely one of, if not, my favorite drink.
I love that he loves what he does, you can tell. Also I just made a homemade daiquiri for the first time. Making ingredients yourself is the way to go people, my God that’s good.
This show is always fun, informative and gorgeous. Great work.
Probably shouldn't watch it at 8am, not a good time to want to try those.
One of my favorite channels keep up the good work!
New drinks!! Greg I use all your tips to up my cocktail mixing game, keep it up!
Okay, so I just went and watched The Hemingway Daiquiri.
Someone asked if you'd make a book.
You said maybe when you hit 100,000 subscribers.
....soooooooooo?
he's already past half a mil
That was me! Two years later, and I’m still watching and eagerly awaiting that book!
Don’t have Havana Club? Try Dominican rum! Barceló, Brugal, and Punta Cana are three of my favorites. Great video, Greg! 👌🇨🇺🍹🇩🇴🙌
Watching drunk Greg is great. Watching drunk Greg whilst drunk, is greater.
I love watching your videos to see how far into the shooting process for the day that you're doing multiples on, to see how more and more progressive lit you get man - haha love ya dude, you're one of my favorite YT channels!
This is why I watch and love this channel. I for some reason never would've thought of using aged rums to make a daiquiri.
Intensifying & adding complexity via aged rum is a good variation, just remember to increase/intensify other ingredients accordingly or it will indefinitely overpower the tang/sweet from the citrus & somehow it ends up almost more watered down tasting... I messed up a couple first trying it, I just set them aside until later in the night 😊
@@RichardCranium321 Would you then cut down the citrus and simple when using an unaged? I've usually gone 3/4, 3/4, 2 for but this video had me thinking of going to 1, 1, 2
@@ryanplunkett3309 if you like to have any of your spirits come through in the final product then stick w 3/4up/2, otherwise, if you want to hide the spirit, go 1/1/2 & shake THEN pour over crushed. Also, another tasty one is caramel apple kiss (if you'd like the mix)....
You continue to do a charming educational entertaining job with the cocktails
Greg,
Thank you for showing me about this drink. I like it very much.
Best regards,
Beef.
That slow mo sip tho!! 😂👏🏼
Good episode! The first one definitely looks like a refreshing poolside drink.
A real daiquiri, like the 2nd drink he made, is one of life's simple pleasures, a great canvas to experiment with how subtle changes in the ratios can change the balance of a drink and a fun way to experiment with different rums: a Flor de Cana 4 Year daiquiri, a Smith & Cross daiquiri and an El Dorado 15 year daiquiri are very different beasts.
If you add like half an ounce of applejack and scale down the rum to keep the volume at 3oz you get the applejaquiri which is delightful
Thank you for making my favorite drink!
Love the channel! Inspiring me to make some awesome cocktails but also loving the history stuff too. You should do a Q&A episode, or an episode where you make your five favourite drinks or five most hated drinks haha! Cheers.
The Daiquiri has got to be my Grandpa Walter's (of blessed memory) damn favorite cocktail. He would make it every weekend of every summer. Those were good times, Grandpa's Banana Daiquiri.
One of the great things about a daiquiri is how much it can vary by what rum (or combination of rums) you use. One of my favorites is 50/50 Doorly's 5 and Dr. Bird.
My second favourite drink, bested only by an old fashioned! You got me in the liquor store looking to change up mu usual Bacardi White for something aged and a bit more... adventerous! Thanks as always Greg
That face! When you turn after sipping that daiquiri is priceless!
A classic and definitely one of my favorites!
The Dora rant in red plaid!😁😄😄😄😊 priceless!
Love the rambling humor!
Cheers!🍸🥃
Great episode. Oldfield's, my favorite bar in LA, makes a killer Daiquiri, but spend half the night warning people, "No, not like that, not at aaaaaaalllll like that." They're like this, and they are amazing.
Greg your the man! Keep up the great work!
Comedic timing/execution of the editing is fantastic
Doing cocktails the justice they deserve. Thank you for making this!
My D&D group made daiquiris this weekend! Much fun was had.
Made the roots daiquiri substited in bacardi silver because I had it on hand and that is a dam good drink. Thank you Greg. Please keep up the awesome content.
Another fantastic and informative video! Keep it up you've got a sub for life 👍
This was a fun episode.
Watching these videos in the morning is dangerous for, as I always want to try them out.
Ooh! Love a good daiquiri! Plantation has a great Barbados-style XO Rum, and it's phenomenal with a high quality Earl Grey Simple Syrup in a 2, 3/4, 3/4 build.
Dear editors- can we please get a booze blooperz? I know you've been holding out on us😉
Your enthusiasm (should i call it that?? whatever it is, it's hilarious) is really making want to make a daiquiri right this second
Yes! using the
Havana club!! Love it
I dont even like cocktails but I enjoy your videos. Great job!
History of Dora the Explorer included for free!
Love the drama with the ice!
How you make your daiquiri is how I make mine! It's my favourite cocktail of all time for its beautiful simplicity.
I tend to use the Havana 5 year & sometimes, in a pinch, I've swapped out the demerara syrup for honey syrup.
Keep doing what you're doing, Greg.
Well Mr. how to drink. I love the drinks 🍹 that you make, until now. Many many years ago I was offered a drink call daiquiri, OH 😯 BOY!! delicious!! So I drink 🍹 and drink, how many no idea, until the next day. Boy was I SICK 😷!! So I haven’t had a Daiquiri ever, and I’m not planning any time soon. Thanks for your great recipes.
Another Rum I HIGHLY recommend for a daiquiri is one called Diplimatico Aged Light and Dark Rum. It's delicious on its own, in an old fashioned and various other drinks. I've started using it and not regretted it.
There's also Pillar's which is also good
Well this video is well-timed! I'm headed to Havana on Sunday. The first thing you made is what they now call a "Ron Collins" in Cuba... it's a daiquiri on ice (topped up with soda, usually, like a Tom Collins). A real Cuban daiquiri will be the first thing I order when I get to the Hotel Nacional and light up a Partagas Series P No 2 on the patio that overlooks the Malecon.
Just made a couple daiquiri’s with Rum Bar silver, super funk!
Cheers
I love it when you make a drink and I've already got the ingredients.
Love the opening music
I can't stop replaying the sound from 0:18
My new favorite show revolves around drinks I'll probably never make...hey, vicarious living is my jam
Hey that product placement is on point this episode!
Your show has inspired me to try and come up with my own mixed drink. It actually got popular enough to make it onto the bartenders list at my local bowling meetup.
I'd really like to introduce you to the Retro Sunrise.
Delicious episode! Just made myself one, mmmmmm...and the music is just the right volume and really helps build the mood too! :)
I love it!
Just made one of these with a coffee rum (just Plantation 3 star that I infused with coffee). Surprisingly delicious.
Greg, have you ever had a barbados rum punch? It's basically a daiquiri but with grated nutmeg and a few decent shakes of bitters. Mount Gay's recipe was my favorite while I was there.
1.5oz gold rum (mount gay eclipse rum)
1oz demerara syrup
0.5oz fresh lime juice
2-3 shakes of bitters
Grated nutmeg
Water to taste
I like crushed ice for this drink but its it's also excellent when made neat.
This is one of my favorite go to drinks, it's very easy to make pitchers of it in advance and has been a huge hit at parties.
This drink is seriously worth it's own video.
1:56 "Now, a roots, ROOTS Daiquiri is... just like a daiquiri."
Oh, my Gawhd - what an absolutely awhful impression of Thurston Howell III - Lovey, fetch me a daiquiri...
Alternative titles: history of adult slushies
Wish my history teacher was this interesting.
In Canada, they translated Dora in french, to teach English.
It’s kinda meta.
In spanish speaking countries she is a mexican that teaches English
Yay! New upload!
You could post a rum drink every day and I would love them all
I would love to see you do a show on essential bar glassware, and the the appropriate vessels to serve for various types of drinks.
Tried the same but with spiced rum (Kraken in my case) - absolutely changes the game, give it a try.
love it.
nice, daiquiri? that's one I've been waiting for, barkeep!
Would love to see you do a gimlet (with history if there is enough info!)
I've been asking for a Gimlet for some time. Maybe now that there are two of us, Greg will consider it.
Maybe 3
If he does I hope he references the long goodbye
I was searching for this and was surprised he didn’t have it! Here’s hoping he makes one on it (and the Bee’s Knees as well since these all seem “close” to the base of the daquiri)!
Made this tonight with plantation 5 year and it may be the best drink I've ever made.
I don't even drink but I love this channel.
hey Editor! I like "those" episodes. I hit the like button instantly because I
still better than Island Oasis machine! I've really loved introducing people to this cocktail over the last 20 years! Snag a black strap rum to make it REALLY come alive!
lol that thumbnail. You're a hoot Greg!
Awesome! Hype for The Doctor inventing the banana Daiquiri haha
