Good call for cutting at an Angle, less stress on the weld

The old boy that I learned from said from 20-45 degrees was best so I have always just made sure I was in the range. I know there is a way to figure it out over the height to angle for the best length of weld but be did it for 40 years this way.

Do you have to shorten the brake lines when you shorten the wheelbase? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, just trying to learn how to do the things I want as I wait for the next mechanic class to start

I not a expert on frame repair . When I was a kid like 18 I got a job in Dallas after I got out of high school to put my self through trade school . Repairing trailers . I welded a lot of frames back then . I used 7018 . Now days they probably use a wire machine and use 70s wire. I got old so when I lay out some thing to cut I like to use a piece of sharp soap stone so the line is narrow or you can wind up a lot of accumulated error . I like to use the hockey mask or a face shield and safety glasses . If you ever get a chance to use one try a metabo cut off grinder . I used one at the power plant I worked at for a long time. . Thanks for the videos

Ya I will be using 70s weld in the mig. Ya I need to buy a mask. But I did have glasses on lol. I was being lazy when I was cutting it and didn’t want to stop to make sure I was on the line. No one to blame but me on that lol

Hey Rob, loving the videos. Could you do a video on the 5.9 common rail trucks and cover what happens when they drop a valve seat and what the general procedure is for fixing them. I just picked up an 04 motor for super cheap and it had that happen to it, the head took a beating and piston had chunks imbedded in it etc and very light scoring on #5 bore. After pulling it apart and seeing the carnage it got me thinking as to what it takes to rebuild one as I seem to have heard that's a common issue and I figured your defiantly the guy to ask

Love the project, I’m working on a 1996 2nd gen right now. What did you do for the fuel tank? From what I understand the 35 gallon tank won’t fit after the frame has been shortened correct? How did you solve that problem?

I used the tank for a short box

I thought the rear frame rails were just riveted to the front just behind the cab??.. so u could just slide out long bed frame rails and slide in the short bed rails...idk.. maybe I missed something in one of the other videos..👍👍

Maybe the earlier second gens weren't that way...
