  • As the Q50 3.7 gets closer to an affordable price range for young adults, I get asked this question all the time: "Is the Q50 a good first car?" Considering the costs involved with financing, insurance for young adults and monthly/yearly maintenance costs, I'll go over a few things that will help you determine the answer to this question yourself!

      I don't believe 300+HP for a first time young driver is appropriate.

      Nah, this was my 3rd car and I still got a little sideways in the rain. Kids need to learn how to drive properly first. Also, as others have mentioned, first time owners don't typically care for things the way they should. My mom bought my little brother a '17 Mazda 6 as his first and I told her she was crazy and made him promise to bring it to me for maintenance because it is a damn nice car and I don't think he'll care for it properly. Also, I've already had a few electrical issues with mine that were pretty expensive and it's ~30,700 miles. First car, I say a good 4 cylinder Toyota or Honda all the way; cheap, reliable and usually easy to work on and learn.

      @@_Johnny.B.Goode_ why? There are very mature 16 year olds and very immature 30 year olds and visa versa. My 21 yr olds 1st car at 17 was a 1999 6 speed trans am with a mild cam, long tubes and exhaust - it put down 377whp and 364wtq.... Not a problem because he's a mature person and I trust him. Never had a ticket never been in an accident in his 4 years of driving it.

    I’m 19 and looking into getting a Q50 as my first car(2014/2015)..It does seem a bit of a pricey monthly payment to keep up with (car payment/insurance/gas/etc...) Not necessarily to the point where I would have myself in a tight financial situation, its more that fact that I also gotta keep in mind that I have other responsibilities (rent/my bills) I’ve decided I’m just going to save up roughly what the car costs, and then start searching for one. I’m in no rush..this car is my goal, the looks is what made me fall in love with it..I’m not a big “car guy” and I really don’t care about speed or tuning it. All I’d like to do it is lower it, wheels, and a chrome delete 🙌🏼

    I’ve owned my ‘11 G37 sedan since I was 16, it’s been 2 years now. Insurance and gas (Cali prices have always been ridiculous) are probably the two biggest hits, and I’ve been maintaining it religiously ever since. I initially hated owning it, but now I’ve come to love it and it helped me delve into the realm of cars and detailing as well. I will say that owning one of these cars on the VQ platform at a young age is somewhat difficult cash wise, especially since I’m nearing 100K and need to do preventative maintenance. It’s not too too expensive, but the maintenance/parts price difference is noticeable in comparison to a more econo-box car. Besides that though, I’ve completely fallen in love with my car and cannot wait to slowly build it up :) great video 👍

    Chiming in here, bought an 06 G35x with 89k on it roughly 5 years ago for about 11k at a dealership. Mechanically, it's been great so far. The only parts that have needed to be replaced from wear/failure were cam/crank position sensors and front wheel hubs/bearings. You could count the exhaust on that list too since it was rotted, but that was going to be replaced anyway, same with the brake pads and rotors. I went with a Stillen Gen 2 catback and Hawk pads/Centric rotors and currently have about 115k on the Odo. I get between 15-19 mpg city, mostly closer to the 15mpg mark, though I'd expect a bit higher if I did more highway driving and I do have a heavy foot in this car. I've also put about 20k into it in upgrades, so that was a great financial decision. EDIT: just the stuff I mentioned in this comment was over 3.5k, those OEM Nissan parts aren't cheap.

    I bought my 2010 g37x with 97k miles and now has 104k in almost 2 years, the only issues I had was the plastic heater hose connector broke apart and leaked coolant, I replaced just the connector with a metal one from carquest for $4 and filled it up with coolant and all is well, another issue is when I accelerate about 40% throttle, their was no power, I hold the throttle steady and after a second or 2 there was sudden power but the transmission didn’t down shift or anything it’s like power is very jerky at times and sometimes it’s fine, I’m thinking I’m having an oil gallery gasket issue, I did 3 oil changes (first with PP 5w30, second with redline 5w30, third with Mobil 1 0w40) and changed the spark plugs and air filters and cleaned maf and throttle bodies since I owned it, because of this engine hesitation and laggy power really wants me to sell it, plus I have an exhaust on it and the lack of power makes me feel like I’m driving a Honda, all noise but no go, it gets embarrassing getting beat by corollas and slow SUV’s from the light lol, idk if I want to spend almost 3k to replace the gaskets and not drive it for a while

    Question.......I bought my Q with 85k.....I recently just installed some 19” wheels and I want to lower it but not slam it..... just want to eliminate the wheel gap completely....I’ve been lookin at superdowns but I know you vouched heavily for the s tech teins.....would springs be a smart move or should I just go straight coilovers because of the mileage?

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 роки тому

      That’s a good way to reduce the amount of interest you accrue for sure. At a certain point you have to decide how much you want to pay long term and how low you want to make your payments. You might take out a 10k loan with 0 down and your payments might be $200/month. But if you put $1000 down your payments might drop to $190/month. These are just round numbers and might not be accurate, but the point is sometimes you can put a bunch down and it doesn’t change the payment that much. For me, I’d rather keep that $1000 in cash in case a problem arises and pay the extra $10/month. Sure, you’ll pay more overall, but you just have to decide what makes most sense for you.

    • @mikexcanxjerk

      Speed Culture Studios how come you dont believe in extended warranty. Piece of mind when you sleep . Its hard to save a big downpaymemt the save a rainy day amount. When you cam just get warranty dont you think ??

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 роки тому

      Miko_Pure Ive never really talked about warranty, but there have been several studies done on average warranty uses. One of them I read recently stated that on average, buying an extended warranty is the equivalent of throwing a $20 bill out the window every month-May have been every week, but I think it was per month lol. Essentially what they are saying is that a vast majority of people that purchase an extended warranty very rarely need it to the point where it would actually cost them less to simply fix the issues that arise.
      Now gap insurance is a much better buy in my opinion.

    • @mikexcanxjerk
      @mikexcanxjerk 4 роки тому +1

      Speed Culture Studios most of these new cars nowadays has a lot sensors and they are not cheap to fix . What if some odd reason something developed but you didnt . I think of warranty as insurance just in case . What you said made sense but you never know dont you think ? The powertrain may be bullet proof but what about the electrical systems and all that ? I agree gap is indeed very important
      My friend a few years ago got a 2013 genesis sedan . He decided to get extended warranty , a week later he developed a electrical problem it was a bit of a surprise but if he didnt have warranty he would of paid a lofty some or not get it fixed it had to do with infontaintaiment system or something like tht

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 роки тому

      Miko_Pure I’m not denying that there are cases when a warranty has saved people. However, the studies have show that a vast majority of people do not actually benefit. So it may have saved your friend, but the 100 other people that bought a warranty never used a dime of it. If it makes you feel better then definitely do it.
      The other part to consider is that you may purchase a $15,000 vehicle that is only worth $13,000 from a private seller. Now after tax title and license you’re around $17,000 being financed then you throw gap insurance and extended warranty into the finance package bringing you to $20,000-$22,000 on a vehicle that’s only worth $13,000. Say you want to trade it in 1-2 years. Now it’s worth $11,000 to a private buyer and maybe $8-9,000 for trade value but you still owe $15-16,000. You might be able to cash out your remaining warranty, but you’re still way in the hole and never actually benefited from the warranty in those 2 years. I’m talking about this from experience by the way.
      Now you’re forced to put a huge amount down to cover that negative equity or cough up $5k in order to get title in hand to sell to a private buyer. I tend to stay away from warranties unless you intend to hold onto the vehicle until it’s paid off.

    Insurance is low if you don't drive like an idiot getting tickets lol. I'm down to $80-83 a month full coverage. Insurance dude can continue to say it ain't worth shit and I'm happy to pay less 😁 I bought mine 3 years ago at age 22. 14' Sport fully loaded $24,900 out the door with 39k miles. I can say this coming from 01' PT Cruiser 🤢 if you work hard and buy what you want you tend to take care of it more than when you are 16 and don't give a shit about anything haha. So glad I didn't buy a brand new Veloster Turbo instead of my baby lol. Raced my coworker who has VT and yeah had to wait on him 🤣.
