  • How to light charcoal (bbq pit) without lighter fluid. I use cooking oil to light my charcoals, which is a natural and organic way to get the fire going on the bbq pit. Plus, your food won't smell like lighter fluid either. JRMSWEEPS HAPPY GRILLIN' !!!

We also use a few sticks to help get things going.
While wood and vegetable oil smoke (in moderation) adds to the flavor of food, the byproducts of burning lighter fluid make everything taste foul.

UPDATE: HOLY C**P!!! Your charcoal starting idea worked INCREDIBLE. It worked exactly like you said it would. Once I lit the oil, it STAYED lit, creating a super hot flame that heated my coals to white-hot in no time flat. If everyone used your technique, all of those high-priced charcoal lighters would be out of business in five-seconds FLAT. I can't thank you enough:)

I have tried tons of ways to get coals going. I have always wanted to spend weekends grilling, but couldnt until now when I finally got my own house. Every method I tried kept failing and I was about to give up until I tried this. Its amazing. The coals not only activated, but the fire kept moving to non-activated coal. Once they were all lit, it held its tempt for over an hour until I got my hotdogs and burgers done. This is the first method I've found thats actually got me thinking I can cook things other than burgers. And I get tons of beef fat cause I cook a lot of ground beef during the week. This is a great way to dispose of it.

@@JRMSweeps I figured out the problem. I used paper towels my wife bought instead of the ones I normally get, which is what I used the first time. They were burning out before really igniting properly. I had mine this time and it worked just fine. Now my new problem is making sure the coals are hot enough to properly cook things like burgers. Right now, I'm able to smoke the meat like nobodies business, but it's not hot enough for things like burgers and steaks.

I've noticed that the store bought lighter fluid DOES impart a nasty, petrochemical taste to my BBQ'd meats. I've tried the "chimney starters" before, but they're a pain in the ass, just another big, dirty step to perform. So I can't wait to try your technique! Once I do, I'll be back with my two cents. In the meantime, thanks for the info.

OMG!! JM, you deserve a friggin' award!!! It's been a full year since I had another BBQ, and all this time I've been waiting to use your technique.
I took a paper towel, made a little box out of it, and put about 1/4 cup of canola oil in it, then lit the paper, and... VOILA!!! That sucker lit like a champ, and KEPT burning, making a little smoke (what the heck, it's an oil fire), and burned so hot that in no time, I had a major BBQ goin' on. I can't thank you enough for this AMAZING idea, brother. It totally eliminates the need for expensive charcoal starters and fluid (which also adds a bad taste to the food), and burns so hot it's like MAGIC. It works so well that I can still hardly believe it. Merry Christmas, man. This is like the best Christmas gift, ever :)

Back In high school, I remember telling my teacher that I like to start it with cooking oil. It's easy but done when I don't have lighter fluid. He went on to say that he wouldn't advise me to do that since, "Cooking oil is processed" yet I called him out when I mentioned him eating french fries baked in cooking oil....

You are my hero. First time to do bbq, never thought so easy to start fire of charcoal. Just a little cooking oil is enough to last so long. I used too much oil and got too strong fire. Next time, maybe only one piece paper towel and dip tiny oil is enough for me.

6 year old video but new to me. I heard of a grease fire but never seen one. Never heard of an oil fire but I know it will burn.
Can I use new oil I have cooking oil I don't want to eat with.
Also can't you lay charcoal then a drench paper toil with oil then charcoal or does it have to be like a bowl, cup design.
Can I mist the coal with the oil with a spray bottle.
I never tried it looks insane when your doing something different but it makes sense 👍👍👍👍

    • @JRMSweeps
      @JRMSweeps  2 роки тому +1

Yes, you can use new cooking oil, that will work. Yes, you can lay charcoal and then drench the paper towel with oil as well. But, as far as spraying the coals with oil and lighting it, that might not really work that well. The paper towel allows for enough burn to occur to create the grease fire and get the fire going. Works every time and haven't used lighter fluid since I made this video. Good luck.

      @@JRMSweeps thanks. I'll try
I stopped using what I call chicken nugget charcoal. I'm using real wood burnt or dry wood. The coal looks like chicken nuggets it's pieces of coal compact into the shapes. I looks wrong and glued together cause it doesn't break apart like coal is supposed to. 👍👍👍
