Black Myth Wukong has got to be one of the best looking games I’ve ever played behind Ghost of Tsushima. The story is well written as its characters. This video we’ll be something to look forward to and learning the Chinese Myth and culture aspects of the game. Thank you AvenueX for making a video like this!
I play on PS5 for both games and Ghost of Tsushima has BY FAR greater graphics/textures/framerate, but that should be expected for a AAA PlayStation exclusive game made by one of the most accomplished video game developers and has been out for a while. For me when I play BMW the framerate lags or drops occasionally even in performance mode and the textures come in like a second late during cutscenes especially when the camera is focused on something or zooming in. That being said both games are just phenomenal and as someone of Korean descent I am jealous of the Chinese and Japanese haha.

Thank you for the video, great to finally see a Chinese person explain the story with Chinese context. Just a few things to add, as a fellow Chinese person who wants to show love to the other characters who got less attention: 1) Sha Seng (Sandy) was not just a labourer, although that was his role most of the time. He does participate in some fights. When the party came across huge armies, Sandy would help fight off the demon minions. Because Sun Wukong was bad at fighting underwater, Sandy and Pigsy were in charge of the aquatic battles, although their role was usually the lure the demon above ground where Wukong would finish off the demon. 2) Bai Long Ma whilst remaining a steed for the most part, actually does fight in 1 occasion when Tang Seng banished Wukong from the party. He was also the one who had the foresight to tell Pigsy to go to Huaguo Mountain to fetch Wukong back to rescue their master (so he actually does speak).
If there are any players who haven't been exposed to *Journey to the West* and are starting to play *Black Myth: Wukong*, I'd like to offer you some insights. *Journey to the West* wasn't just written suddenly; it’s a story that has evolved over hundreds, even thousands of years, blending real historical events, folklore, and religious elements from China. Throughout its long history, the story and its characters have taken on many forms (for instance, the earliest versions of the Great Sage the Equal of Heaven and Sun Wukong were not the same character, and the Yuan Dynasty's version of the story included a lot of NSFW contents). Even after the most famous novel version, *Journey to the West*, was written, people continued to reinterpret, rewrite, and draw inspiration from it. The story in *Black Myth: Wukong* is yet another reinterpretation, with a distinct personal style. Some elements may not align with the original spirit of *Journey to the West*. While I don’t oppose such adaptations and creations, it’s important to understand the differences between each work. I hope more people come to love *Black Myth: Wukong*, and I also hope that some will take this opportunity to appreciate the charm of the original *Journey to the West*. In the foreseeable future, this story is sure to continue inspiring more great works.
This is a great refresher. Growing up as overseas Chinese, I was lucky to have access to the children’s magazine er tong le yuan where I fell in love with sun wukong. I'm not a gamer but watching the trailer of the game made me want to rewatch Journey to the West 1996 starring Dicky Cheung as Sun Wukong and now I'm rewatching it lol. I remember having a blast watching it years ago. Totally unrelated, I just want to mention it. In Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II To The West, I've noticed there's at least a couple of references to Journey to the West such as a rake and a guy who looks like Zhu Ba Jie. the horse is the saddest character, the entire time, he was ridden by the monk and eat grass lol. He did occasionally help them out when they are trouble. But those are very rare events. He is a dragon prince that did his horse business very very well.
Fantastic video. Thank you so, SO much for this. I've been a lifelong Dragon Ball fan so naturally I'd also done some surface level research into Sun Wukong. So I wasn't completely blank when Black Myth was announced and now released: I knew who Wukong is and what he's capable of. But as much as I wanted to read the actual novel to get the whole story, I never got round to it. Finally ordered a copy of Anthony Yu's volumes a few days ago, and now to find THIS video...perfect timing.🗿

OMG You're back to BMW Wu Kong lore, I love you.
I spent years self learning Chinese ...and I've watched a lot of drsmas, shows etc. recently, I am addicted to 喜人奇妙夜and for some reasons this video explains a lot of thing from one of the funny sketches 八十一难😂😂
Thanks a lot for the efforts you put in making your videos. I love your way of explaning the dramas, and I ENJOY your ranting 😂
Wow, the way you explain 'Kong' is one of the best I have heard. Very few people can give such an accurate explanation.
Yeah, I know most of your viewers must be still confused with what is 'Everything that's already ready there to give birth to form'? 😁
like stem cells, the main point is in the potential it will become, thus "Kong"
I watched your previous video years ago and got excited about the game. I am glad you are making this series and having fun with this game. Looking forward to hearing more about this classic Chinese literature.
I think the best word to translate the “Wu” (悟) is Epiphany. At least that’s the first word that sprung into my mind.
a very good English translation of that word. Epiphany
This gives me a lot of joy, having been introduced to Journey To The West via the Japanese anime, Gensomaden Saiyuki by Mangaka, Minekura Kazuya and the 90's Playstation 1 game, "Saiyuki: Journey West". Looking forward to more on this~ Thank you for this, I'm learning so much more.
Watched your previous one (from 4 years ago) just a few minutes ago. Fantastic and you were so ahead of EVERYONE. Now watching this one. I can't think of anyone more worthy of an instant subscription as you. You are a cultural goddess :-)
oh my god! I just subbed to you, like, hour ago.
it's time for literature and history lesson again!
Maybe it's just me but I'm hearing so many non gamers playing Black Myth Wukong for the first time. Heartening sign of support for the game. Would like to try myself if I had the time and money.
Glad to know you are playing the game and giving us cultural/religious education. Thank you! Keep it up! ❤
Great! Thank you! I now have a better understanding of the story "Journey to the West". I have seen so many adaptations that didn't convey the meaning as clear as you did in 30 minutes.
I'm so excited that you are covering this! If you're not a gamer, this game is going to whoop your ass.😅
Thank you Shīfù for this knowledge, I'll be eagerly waiting for next chapters, thank you.
"That Chinese Lady" is back covering Black Myth: Wukong! Really looking forward to more of your videos covering the Journey to the West!
All I can say is, the ancient Chinese authors had access to some sweet, sweet, psychedelics.
Thanks for the video. Looking forward to more on this topic.
I'm Vietnamese and I can definitely tell everyone that. All Vietnamese people know Journey to the West. This is the childhood of many Vietnamese people every summer vacation on the TV series. Maybe Western countries do not know much but Vietnamese people definitely know.
你们的版本配音、字幕、主题曲都是越南语吗
Finally a channel where i can understand more about the black myth wukong game! TY🙇♀️
What an excellent summary!! You managed to include so many details! Looking forward to the rest of the series as well 😊
Man, i was so waiting for your videos, its clear, precise, deep and so enlightening! Thank you!
Thank you so much for starting this in depth explanation of the story behind the game. I don't play this kind of games myself but I like to watch the story. My husband is playing it so I will recommend your videos to him. We also wanted to buy the book since it's one that we have wanted to have in our collection. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
Between Black Myth Wukong and the Creation of the Gods adaptations Chinese legends are getting such an international spotlight, I have been longing for this to happen!
Please make videos like this explaining about the rich Chinese history and culture 👏👏👏👏
the horse is the saddest character, the entire time, he was ridden by the monk and eat grass lol. He did occasionally help them out when they are trouble. But those are very rare events. He is a dragon prince that did his horse business very very well.
Immediately click after watch tutorial of black myth wukong 😌😌
Fantastic video. Thank you so, SO much for this.
I've been a lifelong Dragon Ball fan so naturally I'd also done some surface level research into Sun Wukong. So I wasn't completely blank when Black Myth was announced and now released: I knew who Wukong is and what he's capable of.
But as much as I wanted to read the actual novel to get the whole story, I never got round to it. Finally ordered a copy of Anthony Yu's volumes a few days ago, and now to find THIS video...perfect timing.🗿
One of your Wukong explanation video is literally the most viewed in your channel 😆 pleasee put those two videos into the playlist, too
I am so impressed with your knowledge. Looking fwd to upcoming videos
I’m here for The Journey West! Not a gamer. I’ve followed your cdrama and cultural content for years now.
I love this book, so I’m always up to hear more.
I'm so excited for this!! Thank you so much, and I can't wait for your informative videos on this topic ❤❤
Thank you so much for the explanation, it is truly helpful and has piqued my interest even more on the Journey to the West!! Can’t wait for your next video on this topic!!!
I love these types of videos!! I feel so much smarter
Great translation! I love it! When the master was choosing his name, he removed the "animal" side of the character according to the 1592 edition, that symbiotically means what he want to teach him is to be human. As for the two characters, why Sun was chosen was well explained. Thank you for making this video.
OMG! So many things clicking in!!! I was so excited to see this video on my feed! :D Thank you!
Can't wait for your next Wukong video...love this story lol
I just want to let you know that even though I watch all your videos regularly, this video didn't show up, I had to look for it. So you might want to notify your audience that even if UA-cam says you didn't publish a new video, you did. And of course, I enjoyed this video immensely. Thank you for making it!
Hi, welcome back! I have been waiting for your video since the 1st one many years ago. 😄
YES I was waiting for your video now that the game is out and I'm stuck on Yellow Loong. I immediately recognized a few of the dialogues as actual lines from a few different real texts. Love the attention to detail.
I had been waiting and you did not disappoint! Love the video! I will be looking forward to the next one.
非常感谢你 ! Thank you for this excellent analysis! I remember watching your explanation of this game's trailer and how much I was amazed at the layered meaning behind each detail, every word, nothing was random and now after watching the gameplay and being absolutely blown away, I return to your videos! What a treat! You are our 大圣 🙏✨
Very good, AvenueX, now I am a lot clearer. Before was only Sun Wu Kong, and all magic and sorts. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for this!!! I've beem dreaming about the game's release for the past 4 years-its absolutely lovely to see you release this series (what a treat, a series!) of videos about Black Myth: Wukong. Looking forward to enjoying your insightful commentary.
Thumbs up to AvenueX for your splendid crystal clear explanation on the historical events and literature Journey to the West inspired by Monk Xuanzang's journey to India to obtain the Buddhist Sutras.
I love this! I am playing the game and this helps me appreciate it even more! Thank you!
This video was so enlightening, thank you. Eager to see more
Wow W, what an education, Avenue X! I want more. Thank you!
我还没玩过这个游戏,但我喜欢所有的美猴王电影,都看一遍
i just learned about the game yesterday, but since i cant play it yet, and since i am not familiar with the story, i was so excited to see that you had already made videos explaining the lore! as always its great to see how you tell things in a way that is easy to understand. i also really appreciate that you add the terms on the screen in three different ways, which is something so useful for people wanting to learn mandarin (((:
Thank you and I hope to see more of the lore. Even if I say JTTW was my childhood, I have to be honest I was only got hooked with the fighting and was too young to understand the more complex aspect of the journey. Again, thank you!
Ive already waiting ur commentary this game since u dropped the trailer. Finally...
Thank you for that.
I am not intending to play the game but have always been fascinated by Journey to the West.
Looking forward to more videos about it
Thank you so much!! I've just known that even the name of main character in Journey to the west has a hidden meaning in Buddhism too.
配图竟然是我儿时最爱的西游记连环画,没想到有生之年还能再次见到。谢谢!
我也是一看就知道
I grew up watching Journey To The West & still very much enjoyed your video about the lore! Looking forward to your next one! 🐵🙊🐷🐽🐴🐲🐒

I'm so happy you are covering this 😊❤️
Thank you for this introduction to the story! It makes me want to read the book.
Wow! A wonderful brief but interesting narration on the background of Wukong. 👍👍👍
I don't care about the game 😝 I'm here for all the cultural, literary, and linguistic references! ❤ Thank you so much for this, looking forward to the next one!!! 😉
I remember watching your older video about Wu Kong - it was super fun and informative. I think I need a refresher before grabbing the game :) Cannot wait for your future videos on the topic! Thank you in advance! :D
BM Wukong has sparked my curiosity to learn more about Chinese culture and mythology, thank for your time and teaching the world your beautiful culture.. Btw congratulations to Game Science for delivering such a masterpiece.
i love this video. You're amazing!
It similar to a sufi spiritual journey. Tx AvenueX you have enlightened me
