    I was at one time excited about the 340 engine. But you can buy a UL Power 390is 6cyl with FADEC, a lot lighter and a very simple for DIY installation at around the same money. I feel the Titan engine is behind the times, plus it’s pushing 300lbs at flying weight. There 0-200 D 100hp Continental engine is much better suited for the Kit market like a zenith 750. The Titan 320,340 is just to heavy for LSA kits. I’m excited to hear your interview with the 0-200 118hp engines from the boys in Alabama. That’s a engine you can put on a LSA aircraft in my opinion. And not use up all your payload weight. Great interview Brian. But he seemed to dance around some of your questions in my opinion. Wish he would of got into more of the flying weight from Titan.

      The 320 or 340 engines are never meant for LSA because they pump out too much HP for the LSA regulation. The criticism is off the mark

    Thank you so much for putting in the time on such in-depth questions to the engine manufacturers. I would have liked to see Aeromomentum on your list, though. I am seriously considering them for a CH640 type build (4-place low wing) and wish they could either get that AM-20 version up and running, or put a turbo-normalizer on the AM-15 in order to pull a 4 seater around the sky. Their AM-20 (170 hp) page has had "information coming soon" posted on it for over a year....

    Continental has been the engine of choice for many years and they are a solid engines. But they continue to build off a platform that is almost becoming obsolete as other engine builders advance through innovation and rethinking. I just hope Continental doesn’t get left behind as they require their engines to be ran on leaded gasoline’s. The world has moved on in an effort to eliminate lead as a pollutant in our environment and I’m sure the argument will be made that it’s just a small amount but why have any when through design and innovation it can be eliminated all together. When I see the representative of a large company that is there to promote their product and they’re not showing a great amount of enthusiasm during their promotion I get the feeling that the entire company moves at the same pace and this would explain why innovation is slow and production costs are high. The idea of, “We have been doing this for a long time”, comes to my mind thinking that there are a lot of areas in the company that can use improvement or leaning of duplication or fat especially when they produce ever component of their product. I know I sound critical but I’m reminded of working for a large company just like Continental where we would hold production meetings just to discuss the flow of parts. The sad part was that computers track these parts and to me it was a waist for 7 managers to spend 1 hour a day two days a week discussing this flow. And when I asked, why we were doing this the VP replied, because we have always did this. My comment was, but we can all see the production on our screens and when any issues arise we go to the production cell and take care of them. I see large legacy companies have a hard time changing their mindset when I hear, “because we have always done this way” not that this was said but when Continental recommends that you need to run leaded gas through their engines to maintain reliability I think of Buggy Whips. You can make a great Buggy Whip but if they are no longer in demand then being great at making them doesn’t really matter. Tough interview Bryan you had to keep pulling info the entire time. I’m betting they are use to standing up in the production area giving the Continental promotional pitch and having a hard time in 2020 dealing with changes.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 3 роки тому +5

      I will give you the standard engineer’s answer: it depends. I believe the Titan FI is mechanical FI and not modern automotive style EFI. Mechanical FI is only slightly better than a good carburetor. EFI is generally combined with sophisticated electronic ignition and sensors such as knock sensors and is often 10-20% more efficient than a carburetor. So, it greatly depends on whether you are talking mechanical FI or electronic FI.

    • @ExperimentalAircraftChannel
      @ExperimentalAircraftChannel  3 роки тому

      @@LTVoyager I would have to agree with you there. I visited Airflow Performance a few, several, months ago and got a bit of a education. You get more atomized fuel and fuel delivery to each cylinder and better / equal heat range on heads with FI. You also get a super cooling of the fuel in the jet / venturing effect of a carburetor. Which you dont get with FI. So.... more HP? Maybe not. More efficiency? Let's keep the conversation going. :-)

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 3 роки тому

      @@ExperimentalAircraftChannel This is a good overview. If our airplanes had full electronic control of ignition and direct injection, we’d likely have 10-20% more efficiency at the same or even higher power output. And we would have greater detonation margin allowing use of auto gas and higher compression ratio which helps power and efficiency.

    I love this series, but these old fossils? Continental should be ashamed to still be selling this ancient 'technology'. Carbs belong in classic cars, not on planes. The fuel injection on these still isn't proper fuel injection is it? They are either throttle body, or analogous to the 1970s Bosch K Jetronic, where the injection is per cylinder, but just continuously sprays fuel. These aren't going to give you the per cylinder mixture control and proper FADEC capabilities. Carbs are nearly a century past their sell by date. This is 2020 and people are still messing with their mixture control. This is ludicrous. Lead should not be needed in any modern engine. My two liter car engine has never been torn down, it's at 207,000 miles, it has never seen lead. I has run to nearly 7,000rpm most days. Due to the amount of time I've spent in traffic it the car has averaged under 40mph. So... that's over 5,000 hours of hard use It has had two water pumps and two sets of spark plugs. These engines cost more than my car, they are almost devoid of modern technology, and yet their arcane technology is accepted as good. I got an oil cooler, alternator, seats, and wheels for that price. Why would anyone do this? Find a decent modern engine.
