Players play painfully passive playing Portugal. Playing Portugal passively, Players play Portugal positively perfectly. Also, Prussia played positively poop. Push positions, play proactively.

You should do a commentary on a darthmod battle, with 2 times the unit numbers with 40 unit armies. It's epic having 25 thousand man armies fighting each other.

+Antonis Giannakopoulos It does, you need a really modern and up to date computer to do it. I figure my Alienware computer ( made 2013 to 2011) which even at the time was medium tier, could do a Napoleon Battle with 30,000 men, you would need reinforcing armies though which can be annoying.
Apollo is like, "Prussia, Prussia what are you doing? Prussia..." as if Prussia was Pixie's pet.
i have to say that your commentated games of napoleon total war are rly enjoyable to watch :)
i think they kept the old guard in the back to defend the flank of the french, since their were Portugal calvalry getting in position
when i played this battle everyone was playing passively because on this map units become hidden like crazy so we didn't know where enemy units were in certain areas and the reason my cav was way off in the back was because the old gaurd crossed the river chasing them a bit and i had no time to micro them so i just ran them off for a bit
I just got Napoleon like two days ago, and it's so different from Medieval 2. So it was good to see this online battle to get some advice. Continue the good work Apollo :)

Captain Invisible Indeed, Napoleon is definitly an interesting game, but nothing like Medieval 2. The Total War that it's better than Medieval 2 is still to come

Did anyone else notice that in the Prussian army comp. Pixelated put "3 Old Guard" under the infantry.
i did
one reason portugal plays passively is because they don't have gaurd units like the french and prussians and their morale and reload skill is not as good

You are right Apollo, if you are commiting to anything you should commit... Prussia and France both did the same mistakes. Prussia in 12:44 and France starts very agressively but not use Old Guards until the very end of this battle. I just was very upset to watch them how they are felling one by one in the square formation.

Good fight, good fight. Amusing commentary. At the early game, I thought the French had the upper hand on their Portuguese adversaries, probably because I assumed he'd follow up the cavalry charges with an overall offensive. Playing it cautiously passive wound up losing him the game, as the Prussia player proved to be a rather poor tactician.
Heh, quaint with the Portuguese national anthem there, at the end. Ironically enough, that has to be the best rendition of it I've heard yet, in good part because it's only instrumental but also on account of the good orchestral performance. Usually, you'll hear it instrumental only through bad speakers in a very shoddy quality at, say, the Olympics or some such. I think this instance was the first time it's ever sounded good to me. And oh, yes, the lyrics definitely must be left out. Not only because they sound poorly, but due to their pathetic origin.
One final trivia: this is the Republican anthem from 1911. It was actually during the Napoleonic era that Portugal adopted its first national anthem. Have a listen, if you wish:

Not quite as grandiose, is it? Well, it was 1809 and in those times, I imagine, it was meant to go well with the monarch and the highborn, not so much the commoners. So it was a softer ballroom/court tune than something to play at a public concert to make us feel good about ourselves.

I think the portuguese coat of arms should be quite bigger to the point of the blue cross being visible so to be easier to be identified. But very good video ;)

It's crazy how much better the maps were in Napoleon and Shogun 2 compared to Rome 2 and Attila, I just cant get over it. Wonder if they hired new people or downsized number of map related devs at some point.

Rome's sieges are better then napoleons, Napoleons city battles weren't that good, you would see a few buildings and the towns in the distance, never had the true street fights, nor any good land to sea battles. River battles were good for the most part, they could have had a little more variety, but the random Forrest battles were good.
Kyle Schafer I agree that the siege maps in Rome 2 are good. However, I was talking about the multiplayer maps, I should have specified that in my comment. Napoleon and Shogun 2 had multiplayer maps with interesting terrain features, Rome 2 and Attila do not have that, and it ruins the multiplayer to some extent.

France started so strong, he should have followed up and charged in and shattered the Portuguese line infantry they would have broke against the old guard/ french line infantry machine.

Usually the old guard where napoleons bodyguard unit that was almost never thrown into battle, there is just one case of the old guard actually taking part in the fight out of necessity at Waterloo
And they were slaughtert

What is France thinking? Old guard can rout a good number of enemy infintry because they demoralize enemy infintry. Old Guard are good at line battle but even better at melee. A square is the worst way to fight infintry.
i mean, the prussians just ran around all over the battlefield without any goal,the portugueses fought with half of their army with no reason and didn't surrounded the enemy when they had the chance and french just randomly went on square formation when they were engaged in line battle
Great video as always Apollo , if possible can you play more medevial 2 online battles maybe do historical battle those are always fun. :)

What is your standard army build. Or just your recommendation. on that What would be the amount of money you like/use most of the time. I play with different friends and they all have different cash amounts so its kinda annoying trying to come up with my fav build. Another question for anyone really. Is it better to use lots of regular infantry with maybe one or two elite units or just go as elite as possible. i feel like the regular inf would just make it easier to out flank.
Hes in square formation cause he wants to fire to all 4 sides and not get back charged.
if ur general dies se his staff its like afree small cav unit. even if he isnt dead at the end use him before his crew is widdled down
They dont push forward because an idea alone cant win you a battle. U need to make sure that it works. And he wanted prussia to push more forward so he can cav' charge his flanks over the river but wasnt needed tho.

theol old guard is protecting the bridge for its Russian ally kinda like ww2 were british/French protecting the way to the sea for the main force to retreat.

I don' get why line troops have to stand shoulder to shoulder while skirmishers get to be in loose formation. Idk I just think maybe that might make you live longer.
It was more effective that they stood shoulder to shoulder, it improved accuracy. The muskets thy had at the time werent very accurate

So napoleon thinks prussians are not an easy target what he will do is to first off start with the artillery which makes a lot of damage in the line infantry WHEN napoleon sees that the forces are retreating he sends CAVLARY or some Scouts to check it if they are falling back or retreating the cavlary will mostly end up the job thats why napoleon did it.

man this game is so silly. I don't remember any "kiting" mentioned in any napoleonic battle chronicles. It's not like muskets have a set "range", accuracy just decreases with distance; that's what is breaking the authenticity. Troops probably just had prders to close within a certain amount of paces before opening fire. ANyways, if the design wasn't broken, players wouldn't have to make rules such as "5 light no art". But of cource CA ignores anybody who points to things that could be improved, like Nick Thomadis. It prefers people who only kiss their b*ttholes and talk about how wonderful and "epic" everything they do is. THose are the people they offer to test their games, so of course the design just gets more and more thoughtless with every iteration.

Because cavalry can't attack the front of a unit because of the bayonets. Forming square makes it impossible for the cavalry to flank, and makes it easier for the infantry to brace for the charge.

if you have it on steam all you have to do is click multiplayer
