re: guitar communities in 2020. This is it! Josh, Bukovac, etc, all these online communities are the new community. Are they ideal? Would I want to be playing in a room with friends right now? Of course. But this is a beautiful thing and its all we have at the moment. I appreciate all that you share on this channel Josh. Also, with regard to live music, during the summer I was fortunate to see (safely and distanced) Bill Frisell performing on his front yard in brooklyn, it was magic. Now, more than ever, Im trying to find a way to appreciate any musical moments we can share either in person or virtual
I had to look up some of this guy’s recordings before I watched the interview. Call me an ignorant fool, but I had no idea. Forman is an incredible player. I was already impressed by his recent stuff, then found a 1978 recording that blew me away. Shredding over Bebop at Coltrane levels. Jaw dropping rhythm and lead, with style and taste. As a jazz/swing player he has it all.
First heard Bruce on the guitar wank couple years ago..he is the greatest living jazz guitarist I ever heard .Blows my mind his vocabulary and inventiveness!
Right around 17:40. George Cables!! I forgot about George Cables! Bruce did a duet record with Cables back in the 80's! There was a killer version of "I Mean You" on that album. Back when he was using that old L-5!
I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce when he came out to Australia a little while back, my guitar teacher and I organised a gig for him in our home town for all of my teachers students and it was truly awe inspiring. A great teacher and most importantly a great man. He used my 65 twin reverb amp and he even signed my Joe pass epiphone for me 😄 he also gave me free copies of his albums as a thanks. Very blessed to have met him. thanks for sharing this fantastic interview.
I will never forget when I ehnt to the Baked potato (2014) to see you Josh and I didnt understand why there was another guitar player. and that was Bruce, instantly bluew me away!! I never heard a Jazz guitar player ´´rocking´´ so hard, so original, I couldnt believe it!
Been a huge Bruce Forman fan for decades. Used to see him a bunch at Jazz at Pearls in San Francisco. I'd really love to see a list of the guitarists that took lessons from Bruce. I know Mimi Fox, Julian Lage and Josh Smith but I'm sure there's a ton of other greats who studied with him.
“Discovered” bruce years ago when i was living in SF in the late 80’s. Bought whatever bruce cd’s were available...years later i realized there were a lot of old bruce records that never made it to cd and are not on apple music or spotify so i am now looking for a decent digital turntable so i can buy them on ebay and reverb and rip em into my library. Thnx for featuring him josh! Killer interview.
Bruce is always an inspiration, one of the wisest musicians and a pleasure to hear him share every time! His playing is ridiculous and adds a humor that most music is missing imho. Thanks for putting this up!
Hi Bruce! I hope all is well (considering the weird times we’re living through) with you and Pinto Pam. Josh, love your channel and you’re right, Bruce is the real deal as a guitarist and educator.
So great that you show the love to one of the greatest treasures in guitar we have. Bruce is many things beyond being a great player and it was great to hear him on your podcast. Thanks Josh!
Great interview Josh! Makes me wish I was born a couple of decades earlier and in the USA ha. I've just subscribed to Bruce's channel. Thanks for doing this :)
Years ago Bruce used to have a standing gig in The City at a place called Pearls. I guess he was used to being studied as he played because at some point he looked up and asked "Are you a guitar player?" Um, stumble, gasp, say something inane. ;-) Later on I was relating this story to my buddy John Wedemeyer who said Bruce had caught him watching and asked the same question. John replied "No, I'm a guitar owner". :-D Summer of '19 we're camping in Big Sur and walk down to this restaurant and there's Bruce playing his ass off on the patio. What are the chances of being in an obscure place and stumbling into such a monster musician?
Thank you so much Josh for doing this , thanks to you now i know another guitar player that plays amazing. 👍😊 P.S. any new music of your own on the works ?
14:21 That might have been a draw : “Tonight… Bruce Forman … only “x” number of seats available ….” 1:06:12 it’s taken me decades to figure out that I’m not such a nice guy after all

I like that..
Great player and thinker..humble too..no mention of his grilling machine.

I come from a musical family. My brother plays drums, Mom plays violin and piano, and my Dad plays the radio..... ;-)
