Like the best adult film stars, a good writer knows not to blow their load too early. A reader can't get invested in your story if their are no consequences or challenges for your characters or there's no where else for the story to go.
The stakes in your story can be internal or external. Maybe your character needs to save the Earth or maybe they just need to come to terms with the fact that it's their own fault their dad used to beat them.
