  • We all have have dry maize stalks(Maize stovers) that we regard as of no value. At green fields we say, they are highly valuable and can make good quality silage for animals in periods of scarcity. We encourage farmers to maximize adding value to crop residues for improved animal feed security.

    Is it really viable to use dry stalks?

    • @greenfieldsconsult.
      @greenfieldsconsult.  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Peter. It is very viable
      During periods of scarcity, ruminants need enough fibre based feeds for "Rumen filling" to avoid cases of "Negative Energy Balance". So it is imperative that you provide enough fibrous material for the animal regardless of it being less nutritious.

    But dried as it is ...we without a chaffcutter what should we use ...and is it OK with goats?

      Thank you James.
      Well, you can use ordinary chopping means like using a panga manually, though it tends to be tedious and time consuming for big loads. Alternatively you can procure a semi-automatic chart cutter. It is less costly and it can effectively do the work, we can help you source one.

      @@greenfieldsconsult. how is it? A semi-automatic chaff-cutter? And how much is it?

    • @greenfieldsconsult.
      @greenfieldsconsult.  2 роки тому

      It sure can be fed to goats! As a matter of fact it can be fed to all ruminants.
      There is Semi-automatic and non-motorised cha chaff cutters. Semi- Automatic run a simple motor that will not provide full efficiency while non- motorized has no motor at all, it's operated manually all through. You can contact us for more information.
