please note that the reading of the letter is missing.. this has nothing to do with my editing and this doco was like this from the original source
I think the letter in full is in the stranger among us documentary and the skin too few documentary is as I understand it now commercially available as part of a nick drake box set - go buy it!
One of the great ones.....What an incredible amount of musicians he has inspired. Many of who actually started playing only because of him....His timeless music lives on until the end of time.....
Pink Moon is the only record that I listen to every now and then... pure nick and his guitar... brilliant album.
Nick perfected the art of letting the instrument speak for you.
I had no idea Dave Pegg of Jethro Tull played with Drake! The studio part is wonderful, perfectly shows the way the music had been built.
River Man is such an incredibly powerful song.
a very underated musical genius...
That's a beautiful way to put it!
Hey sunshine, I appreciate you taking the time to load this. Letter or no letter. I thank you,
clean, intense, stark. that's the drake I love.
'Riverman ' is such a devastatingly melancholy song.
i can't believe it! john wood at work! What i'd do to learn from this man!!! Joe Boyd was the industry bod, but John Wood was the man with the magic box for catching it all in - this song was playing round my head all day...
@inthebehljahr I'm glad we got to hear an album with just his voice and guitar but I love the accompaniments on Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter, particularly the string arrangements. The songs wouldn't be complete without the other instruments. Imagine River Man without the strings! Unthinkable
I've been a fan since 2006. Sad that it took so many decades for Drake's music to be excavated... :(
Wow - thank you!
... said Annie Hall. lol
Give the doc a chance. He's exactly as you would want him to be. In a way he couldn't be otherwise once you've heard his music.
I had heard Nick Drake's songs in the early seventies but i never knew until a few years ago that Gabrielle (Actress) was his sister. They were obviously close.
it seems that Nicks sister really cared about her brother alot..
he just mentioned it at the side, to my feeling more to point out how they were thinking than and how it later changed by him. He doesnot go into it any further, so it doesnot disturb me.
It is my favorite song of all time. I doubt it will be outdone.
Question: does Nick's mother, Molly Drake, have a collection of songs out somewhere?
The song I heard during part one sounded amazing.
well, apparently John Wood was Nick's only supporter when it came to keeping the arrangements simple. And he produced Pink Moon, which is pretty much Nick unaccompanied, as he wanted it. I know what you mean though.
don't know but I think you can see the whole letter read on the 'stranger among us' documentary
this is awesome.
I must get this docu.
anyone know what year it's from? looks like mid 80's
it's not cut off on the other vid of the doc - at the end of the 2nd part and the beginning of the 3rd part.
haha, nick was an english major and struggling musician.. story of my life, and kind of a model of my life, haha.
his sister went on to play Nicola Freeman in the soap Crossroads (you'll find clips of her on youtube)
aah, never mind...they didnt put up a 3rd part for that stream of the doc. damn.
Isn't it wonderful how John Martin could have been an influence on Nick Drake. Nick's life followed an archetypal pattern for his class - public school - Cambridge. John Martin was a very rough type and liked to batter women, and yet paradoxically wrote some quite tender songs, almost girlish. If he'd met Nick I imagine he'd have bopped him for being a bit of a nancy boy and depressive. I wish Nick had written something catchy, something Girls Aloud could cover
Surprised the BBC never sold this
or the Omnibus documentaries on the PFloyd..
have a read of the biography 'darker than the deepest sea' - highly informative!!!
There is an outtake with just him and guitar. A much better version IMHO.
nick and john martin were friends....i heard it on a radio 2 interview with graham coxon
Yeah i googled some pictures of her when she was younger. She was one hot fox.
So hey. Can you try and upload part 1? :(
Sorry, this was a reaction at the comment of tracksuitjim. Somehow this came out on top instead underneath his comment.
of River Man...
seems so easy just to let it go on by
footage of nick at the end of pt 5

Not as pathetic.as peoples dislikes for a great man ..what made you look on hear you must like him or are you a dolly partron fan on the wrong page ... stand by your comments to no there sad and lonely lonely ...
I wish I could hear just the vocal and guitar track...lose the string, drums, winds.

I never said anything about disliking Nick Drake. And yes I AM a Dolly Parton fan as well as a fan of many other songwriters including Nick Drake. P.S. Get off of youtube and go back to school to learn proper grammar and spelling.
why does it miss out the letter bit?
