That whole section of "The Peak of Fandom" is just glorious. Dodger and Kyle are shooting the shit with Katy Perry and cats and cat songs while Jesse and Garrett stare in stunned silence wondering how we got there. It reminds me of Garrett when he says to Kyle "I marvel at how your brain works." It's like Jesse and Garrett look at the other two and realize, "Oh no... there's two of them now."
Personally I love Geekenders freeform style. I little bit of news at the end is fine and informative, but please dont lose the loosey goosey nature that is so fun.
I've started watching this semi-consistently. I know this will make y'all feel old, but I used to watch the co-optional podcast every broadcast while I was in highschool. This feels so nostalgic and comfy! Thank you guys for producing this!
I know I'm late, but what dodger suggested about combining accounts to share games is actually how steam families _already works._ You don't have to make like a "family account". You link existing accounts into a "family library" and it pools your games together. You can join and leave families. So two partners or whatever can just link into a family to share games, just like she said.
Weirdly for me, I think the fact that Sony doesn't care about it's IP at all is part of why Astrobot works. I would always carry the feeling that it's weird gross product placement in the back of my mind if Sony cared. But because they neglect all of their IP so much, I always know this is all just genuine love and passion from the devs, which feels so sweet.
It makes me so happy that these devs care so much and it also makes me ten times angrier at Sony for letting it get to this point that we needed this silly little robot to remember actual legacy IP.
I'm really loving the spotlight clips that play while our peeps talk about that game. Great job editor(s)! Not to mention, VOD exclusive(?) content for potential rewatches for the live audience.
The whole mechanic with blowing the dandelion apart. Yeah that's microphone related. Nintendo's been doing that for a while, I remember a few DS games that had the "blow into the mic" mechanic - you could trigger it by just making any noise into the mic or brushing your finger over it, but it was cool to see games take something as simple as having a mic and giving you a different way to interact with the game. Pretty sure Nintendo's been doing stuff like that since before the DS too. I'll also never forget one of the DS Zelda games where you had to stamp a piece of paper. The stamp was on the top screen and the paper was on the bottom and the solution was to close and reopen the DS. I loved analog puzzles like that!
I've been pleasantly surprised by many of the Geekenders guests to date, so it's not surprising that Garrett and Kyle delighted me. But as a FFXIV fan, this introduction to them was a bonus for me. I've spent the last week going through their FFXIV videos and (as Jesse would say) being an emotional vampire when it comes to watching them go through the big story beats. Big fan of their stuff now, and I hope to see them on the podcast again in the future!
57:38 The comparison to God of War seems pretty apt. Iirc Black Myth: Wukong was created in China for a Chinese audience and broke out into the Western gaming market. And from that point of view the lack of explanation for anything makes total sense. Journey to the West is a pretty ubiquitously known story in East Asia so of course the developers wouldn’t feel the need to explain any of the characters, it would just be assumed that the player would already know.
Yeah, XIV took me multiple false starts too but then I ended up obsessed. And it's possible she was referring to older versions, but they do have an altitude hint on indicators now.
It feels like the older I get the more rare it gets to where I'm "actually having fun" playing video games. But once you find one of those games you've gotta share it with everyone you know who plays video games.
@@HazeEmry Oh I know that the game is good alright. All I'm saying is that Jesse's explanation was bit too much, like we got it already with just the first couple examples.. Then he pushed it for 10 more
I couldn't ask for a better duo guest for this episode. 14:08 I didn't even realize that 🤣Jesse being made to play FFXIV by Dodger being an almost one-to-one situation to how Kyle convinced Garrett to try that game out. Ugh that the PS5 pro price... it'd be funny if Nintendo just suddenly announced their upgraded Switch to capitalize on people's mixed feelings with the PS5 price reveal.
It would be hilarious if the CEO jumped on it, and he DID say that it would be this "Fiscal Year" that they'd announce it (Fiscal Year's end for Nintendo is March 31st, for people who are curious). But I doubt they'd kill their upcoming holiday sale spike like that.
I think the news bit falls in well, similarly to the wrap up with homework and where to find the guest on the internet. But I'll echo other comments and say I really vibe with the loose mood through the majority of the podcast. It's my perfect weekend mindset - follow your bliss, and get stuff done when it feels right.
Dodger ranting about Jesse not playing FFXIV reminded me of the co optional days lol. I remember playing FFXIV so much and being so mad that it felt like Jesse wasn't giving it a chance.
Awesome! Thanks for the podcast, too. Love the names onscreen, too! Only feedback is the bubble letters are a bit harder to read than the block letters used for the Geekenders podcast title.
One thing I think about when it comes to FF14s voice overs, is that because they have committed to doing 4 different languages, an extra scene to voice act is a lot more commitment.
To be fair to the Woking Devs, in china and a lot of surrounding counties people just knew journey to the west, in china it's like beyond greek mythology in terms of sheer saturation of adaptation
One thing that is awesome about the new Steam Family Share is that you can play any of your shared games offline now! This means that as I've been playing Space Marines 2 online with friends, my Uncle and Cousin have both been playing through the campaign in Steam Offline Mode! And for games where it's primarily offline anyways you can all play the game at the same time!
The reason not more games use special features of a console or controller is because it locks you to that controller or console. And devs always hope to get released on all platforms, at the very least on the console it was developed for and PC. The nature of astrobot makes it uniquely suited to use all the special features.
Excellent episode. I liked the chemistry, the content, and juuuuust a little bit of formatting as a treat. But I do have to ask, have you found an Intelligent Qube level in Astrobot? If there isn't one, then are they really pulling out ALL the stops? :)
Dodger mentioned not having a bad time with ARR pacing due to not having an MMO pacing point of comparison. I had the same thing for the opposite reason; my MMO pacing comparison was 2007 era Runescape, and even ARR fetch quests were more engaging than the level grinding that makes up the bulk of that game
They should have named the horse Bojacked Horseguy. Spoilers for Astro Bot: When my stepdaughter met Nathan Drake-bot at the theme started I lost my marbles completely! Such a fantastic moment and the level fit Uncharted so well!
Now you need to cross over with the single most British podcast in the world: The Beef and Dairy Network podcast. And yes, that is a real thing and I refuse to elaborate.
Man, Outer Wilds is my game of the decade so far. And I play FFXIV! I hope the peeps who used to work at Annapurna manage to find themselves a good place to land. (On a related note, if any of the people involved in this episode haven't played Outer Wilds, look nothing up and just start playing it, just trust me :P)
I guess maybe with the Annapurna team it's possible they could go up to someone with money and be like "we can give you the entire team of a successful games publisher, we just need funds" and like someone might take them up on that offer
I mean I am almost done Astro Bot, but Jesse you totally spoiled the surprises for so many people lol. Astro Bot the VR game is also fantastic. It is just too bad the PSVR is a pain to set up.
Oh Jesse Sony is famously known for having cool tech that they don't fully use. Did you know if you have a Psvita (specially the one that has a phone plan) you can connect to your ps5 if it's in standby mode and you can play your ps5 games as if it was a streaming service? You can do the same thing with the ps app on pc's
Not only did those old expensive consoles have disc drives, but the PS3 was expensive **because** it has a disk drive. It launched when a standalone blu ray player was around $1000, so if you wanted to watch blu-rays the PS3 was the *cheapest* way to do so. Then the price went down as blu ray became more afforable
If you'd rather not have a news segment/structure, then please don't. This podcast rocks because it's fantastic personalities shooting the shit, not because you tackle specific topics, imo
I grew up with Journey to West shows and I definitely think its worth getting to know it. There's a lot of adaptations you can watch to dip your toes in. There's movies with the Kung Fu Hustle guy Stephen Chow. There's also a decent tv series in the 90s which is what I saw growing up. I haven't watched the 1986s tv show but I heard its the most accurate adaptation so far. I don't know where Jesse heard that jp has more voices but I'm pretty sure that's not true since I play ff14 with jp voices on and found no difference when watching streamers go through the game with eng voices.
honestly that starting point of the MSQ of dawntrail, i feel and i see no one talking about taking huge inspiration from ff10 and modern day isakai anime. like for me it was enjoyable the entire time and left me baffled that it let people so hard pressed to enjoy it
Jesse I don't mean to pile on here but I have to agree with others that you basically went full-on spoiler mode for Astro Bot. If you're looking for some improvements to the show, like you mentioned at the beginning, maybe a spoiler warning graphic?
Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend.
The Geekend

That length. Remember when Doogs capped these at an hour? I'm loving these extra-sized episodes ♥
I love how Dooger/Kyle and Jesse/Garrett happened so quickly.
i do enjoy the more structurelessness of the podcast so please dont change that, love you ❤
I have never listened to these guys before , but they have great energy. I will have to check them out. I hope they come on the podcast again!
Jesse talking about Astrobots like a kid discovering his passion for video games for the first time is the best endorsement a game could have.
I was worried he would run out of breath
The game somehow actually captures that pure joy of playing platformers when I was a kid.
My whole family loves it, but I keep catching my husband playing midday with his work laptop on his lap. 😅
I've started watching this semi-consistently. I know this will make y'all feel old, but I used to watch the co-optional podcast every broadcast while I was in highschool. This feels so nostalgic and comfy! Thank you guys for producing this!

Straight to the beef discussion. I respect the commitment to the bit.
Why beefenders when beefstarters is what they are? 🤣
I do enjoy that they're getting longer and longer, fun to let the conversation go on organically as long as possible for all parties involved

I love how excited and animated Jesse gets about Astrobot, please never change my friend

I think he might like it bit too much.. That tantrum was just crazy..
He turned into a 5 year old trying to explain their dream

I always loved the news segment and that bit of structure in the co-optional it was nice seeing it again

Thank you, Jesse, for adding the videos. Thank you, all, for the great podcast!
No homework? What am I supposed to do? Just sit silently? This is the worst day
My favourite part of this podcast was Dodger and Kyle vibing.
loving the news section but of course your usual biz is so much fun. still did miss you guys doing news.

Loving the added visual flair to the names and such :)

As someone who has never played an MMO, it's a miracle this is as entertaining as it is. Well done!!
It was me! I was the one who asked in stream! So happy to finally see GG on the show :)
A lot of the fun of Astro Bot is the discovery of characters and levels, and powerups, and Jesse just starts listing off everything 😂
One thing I think about when it comes to FF14s voice overs, is that because they have committed to doing 4 different languages, an extra scene to voice act is a lot more commitment.
FF13 -- the first of the ONLY games Jesse never finished (if you have not seen his 3-episode playthrough you really should -- its hilarious)
