  • This is part 2 of Jumping Spiders; Girl Meets Boy! In this section you will see the male's courtship dance which leads up to the act of insemination of the female Phiddipus audax spider. The male's persistance to get her attention is a bit humorous and eventually pays off as she accepts his advances. Enjoy this encounter of these two "love spiders!"

    I love that you love these little ooshes as much as I do. Thank you for advocating for them, it breaks what's left of my heart when people just squish them for absolutely no reason. They're missing out on fascinating, gorgeous, and friendly little alien creatures. And that dejected little arm-slump when she brushes him off made me laugh out loud. Poor little man!

    Boyfriend was absolutely terrified of spiders! One night while watching tv on the couch he started started climbing over me to get to the other side of the couch. When I asked what was going on he could barely get this word out "Spider!". I couldn't see one at first but then there it was. A teeny tiny little spider hanging down from the ceiling. So I carefully got a hold of the silk it was hanging from and put it outside. I really don't see what was so scary about it. The guy was 6' and built like a bodybuilder and the spider was about 1/16th ". LOL

    How often is mating deadly in jumping spiders? I enjoyed the music and the explanation of what was going on.

    • @Tornado1994
      @Tornado1994 10 років тому +6

      Very Rare. It's a myth that females eat the males after mating. In most Spiders, the male will die after coitus. Male Jumping Spiders are a specialty. They survive up to two years. Most male spiders die after 6 months.

    • @PlayerBRUV
      @PlayerBRUV 7 років тому +5

      Tornado1994 its not a myth..i saw a male redback and a female mate but i slept for about an 1 hour and all i saw after that was her eating the remains of the abdomen...

    • @rachellelimbeck2912
      @rachellelimbeck2912 4 роки тому

      @@Tornado1994 oooh this is not accurate, actually in some species the male actually will intentionally offer himself as a snack to the female. She won't eat again until after the babies are born, and since he dies shortly after mating anyway in most species, some types will offer themselves as a final source of nutrition for the female, to increase the chance of her survival and of having healthier babies. Conversely, other arachnids have evolved methods of preventing the female from eating the male--at least not until AFTER insemination. There's a species of tarantula in particular that comes to mind who has adapted special "sheaths" on his front tibias that he slips over the female's fangs to prevent her from biting him. The second he's done, he releases her, and he's fair game again!

    This video is closer to the courtship that happened between my two spiders that I commented on in the part 1 video you did of girl meets boy. I introduced him to a second female, but I lost him when she saw him as a meal instead of a mate. He turned his back to her and it was over. I tried to get my hand in her way when he turned his back, but she didn't waste any time. I knew she was going to jump, but she was quicker than usual on her decision to pounce.

    First, thanks for watching my vids! Not sure where in the country you live, but most orb-weavers will die in just one season. You can try to house it for the winter but it will most likely not survive. You would need a large aquarium so it could make a web to catch what you would try and feed it. Without a web, it will not eat. Best to let nature run it's course.

    so male spiders don't have weiners? They just stick their semen arm in instead? That's crazy weird.

    • @Ujuani68
      @Ujuani68 4 роки тому +2

      They actually make a sperm web first, where they sort of "pee" a droplet of sperm on. Then they suck it up, into the pedipalps (the "arms". After loading his guns, he goes a-courtin´, as we see here. ;-D It is not ALWAYS, that a female eats a male after the formal act of "copulation" has been completed. Usually, our lover lives long enough to fertilize OTHER ladies... But when this is complete, he dies. But he lives on in the spiderlings. Actually, a mother spider can STORE semen/sperm from different males,(of the same species, tho) and then decide, which sample is going to be used as father material. Now, THAT is crazy. I love the world of spiders. It is so alien to the lives of most OTHER critters, you just have to be in awe of how they do things: Web, senses, the different ways, that they care for their young, the way they hunt… The list just goes on and on..

    I've said it, and I've heard it be said many times. The Jumping spider is very cat like.... and I think in many ways it is. It's more expressive than other spiders, you can almost see it thinking and rationalizing its environment. That's why I don't fear these guys, (except when they jump and I'm not expecting it gets me a little surprised).

    The male, as you noted, has little "boxing like" bulbous tips on it's pedipalps when it is mature. The females pedipalps will end in a more tubular shape and not bulbous. Hard to determine on immature juveniles.

      Not advisable. As they get a bit older they will attempt to catch each other for a meal. Spiders are known to be opportunists, in other words if a meal is available and it just happens to be another spider, even of it's own species, they will take advantage of the situation! Best to separate them.

    Ooops, I meant to ask if you knew what the name of that kind of spider. It was black and furry with tufts of white at the leg joints and those gorgeous iridescent green mouthparts.

    Does the Female usually eat the Male after this? Or is that just certain species of spiders?

      Nicholas Mata Well,lots of spiecies,but it's rare.

      It depends on the female. If she's hungry or hates the male that much, she'll eat him before or after sex. Otherwise, she'll let him. Heck they might even share a meal together if one is nearby

    The female can save the sperm and use it on more than one egg sac, but usually just one occurs.

    how do you tell male from female bold jumpers? i just caught one in my backyard, it has one visible white spot on its back and relatively thin pedipalps. Moves very cautiously and apprehensively. doesn’t like to be handled. How can i find it a mate?

    • @wandamcandrews6552
      @wandamcandrews6552 7 років тому

      As you describe the pedipalps, it sounds like a female based on cylindrical shaped palps. Male palps look like little boxing gloves, or bulbous tipped palps. Can't help you with finding a female (mate) as this time of year jumpers are harder to find, at least in Michigan with the coming winter. You would need to first ID this male (if it is a male) and then you would need to know what the female in this species looks like to help in your search...very hard to do! But good luck!
