  • Got stencils and alcohol markers? This tip is a twofer, it gives you more use for your stencils and blending practice with your alcohol markers! Stencils are cheaper and smaller to store than stamps and you can get a similar look for your cards. Let's create!
    Supplies:
    White cardstock (smooth) amzn.to/3K7Oe0u
    Alcohol markers (I am using this budget set of 80 from Art Beek because they are cheap and have a great selection of colors including pastels and skin/earth tones) amzn.to/3JY8Ubi
    Stencils (Martha Stewart) amzn.to/3vCnz6O
    Doily (P.M. studio) pmartiststudio...
    If you don't have self-adhesive stencils you might want stencil spray to make them tacky. amzn.to/3K1SYVt

    This is a great technique. But I do loathe coloring with a passion. My daughter likes it though. I was showing her how to blend and how hard I thought it was. She said it's not hard just tedious and you gotta be fast. She also said it would be good to do while visiting or watching a movie. Neither of which I like to do. Being an introvert with ADD. ME: " Hi , how's it going ? Ahuh, yup, that's too bad, oh good for you... oh look at the pattern of those dust particles in that sunbeam... oooo I need to damp dust. Lol. I'll show this to my daughter! Thanks Lindsay 💜

    I was thinking I don’t have many image stencils, but a quick flip through my collection & I see I have many more than I thought. I usually go for patterns & geometric stuff but I have plenty of images too.
    One of my favorite stencil techniques is spreading texture paste over the top and then using colored pencils once the paste has dried. I was thinking it might be fun to try alcohol markers on top of the paste while watching you color.
    I’ve heard repeatedly that alcohol markers and acrylics shouldn’t be combined but I’ve never heard why. Alcohol markers certainly write over acrylic mediums just fine.
    Tracey Scott just did a month long series on simple coloring with stencils though slightly different than your idea. Trace the outline of the image then color. But she finished with black & white pen work too. And then colored the backgrounds black so the contrast with the color really pops.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +1

      Alcohol dissolves acrylic so it can be absorbed into the nib. I'd use hard nibs (not brush) if you wanted to do that and scribble it on scrap paper to remove any acrylic after. You can use alcohol marker of heat embossed images tho.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +1

      Yes they can be reused. They are plastic. If they get less sticky you could wash them. I think brush tips could fray if you aren't careful but hard tips like bullet or chisel should be fine.

    Well I'll be!! I should never have thought to use markers with stencils - brilliant! ❤️👏🏻❤️ Thanks Lindsay, and thank you for the technique label of "priming" - it's one I use but didn't know what it was called. Would it be useful at all to prime with a blending marker first? I use the blending markers a lot to lift colour when I want brighter highlights, but have not thought to use them to prime.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

Her coloring is amazing. She does marker and pencil classes you can pay for. One day I might do that but until then her free tutorials are very informative. Only con for me is she is all about copics and I can't afford those. She says you can use other sets of markers but I find it easier to follow a tutorial when I have the Same markers. Re: alcohol markers: we will likely be seeing some new competition in the high-end alcohol marker market. Watched some of the vids for NAMLA Creativation 2022. A brand named OLO is coming out with a “modular” alcohol marker that you can do some customizing with. (Estimate of ready to ship is July 2022.) You can choose both ends as chisel or brush if you like, etc. They use a prefilled ink cartridge system for refills and they claim these ink cartridges give you more ink than the traditional injected ink fill system currently used (Copic) so that you don’t need to a refill as often. So ok, you have to pitch the empty cartridges, but you keep the marker body and every other part is replaceable. They say these will retail for $6.99 per marker. I didn’t see a price for the ink refill cartridges. I don’t see any prices on individual colors right now. I’m sure it may take some time for them to offer individual colors. These markers would be an investment purchase as the entry level set sells for $100 (all the sets are offered on their website at less than full retail preorder price currently.)

    Do you worry the edges of the stencil will tear up the tip of the marker? Or maybe that's why you're using cheap alchohol markers? Lol. Idk! But as always your videos are very informative and I've learned alot from you since recently subscribing. Thanks for the priming tip. It makes sense and was very helpful.

    What is your opinion on these markers compared to Arteza? And the price point?

      They are very similar to the bullet chisel arteza but the Artezas are juicier. These are much cheaper tho.
      Arteza are about $1 a marker an these are about 33 cents.

    Silly question can I use the watercolor markers? And what does hack on art supplies? Im kind of slow. Lol

      A hack is a new, quick or different way to do something. You van use waterbased markers. Go for hot press watercolor paper or Bristol board tho.

    ....wait.... you can send normal stencils thru a die roller? 😨

      Yes, us a silicone or rubber mat. The paper goes between the stencil and the rubber mat.
