Hey David, you have lots of great content here. I think a great video you could make would be a competition guide. I.e. pre-comp and intra-comp nutrition, warm up timing, getting the right headspace whether things are going good or bad, etc. something like this could be super helpful for someone new to competing.

Great video... and humbling. I'm a decent squatter, but really I haven't made much progress during the past year. Now, I'm exactly the guy David is describing in the video: not warming up with the bar, immediately loading one plate, two plates, three plates regardless of how they feel on my back that day... basically neglecting keeping a good position. I guess for me it's back to the drawing board. Thanks for all the advice, David!

I know this is an old vid but maybe someone can chime in here... I have short torso, longer legs and trying to start from this back angle rather than work into it as I squat. I'm concerned with glute tightness, when I engage my glutes then I lose the position and get more upright. Maybe a neurological pattern that I have to correct or am I doing something wrong? Also watching world's I noticed some IPF judges made a few forward leaning lifters reposition to a more upright torso before squatting. Any experience with this?

Been a while since u commented but my 2c: don't worry about glute tightness/engaging your glutes before starting the the lift. They are prime movers, its not playing a stabilizing role like your mid section or upper back. You wouldn't try to engage your chest before lifting in the bench. The primary I concern I had with learning this style of squatting was maintaining my brace, specifically keeping a ribs down position and maintaining pelvic angle (very view people can squat efficiently with the amount of extension David has, dude is built like an alien). People often actually ruin their brace by trying to squeeze the glutes before lifting... don't know where that idea came from.

is your lower back not getting tired from being so far forward, or do the muscels become so strong to hold it for lets say 5 reps?

leadteks smart programming is the key, build up slowly

It's a kind of trade-off: havinge long femurs and short torso you either have to lean forward a lot or push your knees very far beyond your toes..depends on your strength, what works better for you...but you can reduce this trade-off a little by taking a very wide stance (like he already does)..but not very much people can squat this way

@@rothotborski thank you for your answer! i tried some things and what works best for me is to get up at an almost vertical position. that way my lower back does not get tired so fastly.

@@leadteks thats always a good decsision if your quads are stronger than your back or you just wanna focus more on the quads..so maybe the front squat would also be an excellent exercise for you...but I had to spend some time on my shoulder and thoracic mobility first to master this exercise
