    • @SoundboundOfficial

      So, according to you, 4GB of NAND should weigh the same as 256GB. Because NAND is some magical gas living inside your plastic enclosures. Right?

    So where is the evidence that it's a 4GB stick? You have shown anything in this video other than the design. Can you prove it's fake without taking it apart and drawing a bad conclusion based on what it looks like? outlawedmedia

      @ArthursHD 9 років тому

      Andrew English Evidence - only on memory chip, i think those goes up to 16GB. And they won't buy expensive one for crappy flash drive. He needed to check part number of that chip (2:21 - large one) to be ensure.

    • @dhowser2008
      @dhowser2008 9 років тому

      ArthursHD I bought one of these from Ebay and tested it, it's formatted used exFAT not FAT32 for a good reason too. Anyhow using the tool I have I have been able test the flash drive and it read/writes to it's limit of 256GB. And it has a single memory chip in it.

    • @ArthursHD
      @ArthursHD 9 років тому +1

      dhowser2008 You tested it incorrectly! It's not even possible to extend NAND chip above 200GB (largest microSD) with current technology and price of real one is a lot higher.
      To check real capacity you need to look at partition size (need to be whole disc - rated capacity). If that is ok you can test it with H2testw. Check all available space and you should wait till test ends otherwise results won't be true. Test could take a long time since fake flash-drives use very slow chips.

  • @thetriggerhappypwner

    That drive is a fake. It is reading 255GB when it should say 238GB. No flash drive shows 255GB, it's the dead give away for a fake drive.

    I sincerely hoped you tried to format the drive to NTFS standards. I find it odd that you claim that it could only be formatted as FAT. Most USB drives I've owned could be formatted to NTFS standards. I still own 10 year old USB sticks...

    A computer doesn't check a flash drive to find out the memory capacity, the flash drive is programmed to tell the computer how much memory it has. There are programs you can use to check the actual capacity it you are worried about the legitimacy of your drive. They work by writing a bunch of data to a drive and seeing how much they can retrieve before the file becomes corrupted (the drive ran out of space so the files that were written to it cannot be stored).

    These have been sold by the thousands. This originated in China. Some U.S. sellers likely purchased them from China for $15 and sold them for profit. Some U.S. scammer actually posted a video on youtube"this is fake, but you can resell it"

  • @bin4ry_d3struct0r

    RMPrepUSB has a 'Quick Size Test' which is ideal for testing for fake memory drives and it is pretty quick (much much quicker than H2TESTW)! It does destroy the data though and you need to reformat it after the test has finished. RMPrepUSB can format 256GB as FAT32 (if you really want to!).

  • @0vlogger
    @0vlogger 11 років тому +1

    It's not fake. You couldn't copy files larger than 4 Gb because it's formatted in Fat32. Format it NTFS and it will take files larger than 4 Gb. The size of the flash drive doesn't say anything about the capacity.

    The black blob on the back is very normal for micro electronics. It's not to hide it - well yes but that's factory made. Not by the fraudsters. The 4gb is a fair guess but it would overwrite any old data after that. So just dump an 4.3gb iso on it and see its corrupted.

    "....its only plastic..." lol that was very funny, even the genuine Kingston would be "Only Plastic" or where you expecting it to be stainless steel, silver, bronze or Gold? /Jokes Asike/, Downing this fake back to its rightful size is very easy, all what you need is to download gParted ISO (google it) > insert fake USB > boot PC with gParted CD > Switch to USB volume (256GB in this case) > delete partition > create new FAT 3.7GB partition > apply > Reboot > now it shows as 3.7GB on explorer

    I would like to share a small story with the small remaining characters left. I got one off eBay as well (Silver in color), and it is lite as well as you demonstrate here, it also has very slow reading/writing speeds (USB 1.1 to be exact), as well as it has an issue saving data, I have been storing files to it, and later come back and they would not be there, I've lot atleast 25GB of files by this, but luckily, they are files I only downloaded anyway :P

    Okay I saw a powerpoint about this today... I didn't make the connection before but the PowerPoint had mentioned that the firmware was hacked in counterfeit 512GB. What I though they meant was they were relabeling generic flashes for the device IDs. However, here it looks like they're not only doing that but adjusting the memory size in flash, correct? In other words, there's far less capacity than 512GB, am I right? What is the actual size of these then out of curiosity....

    255 of 255 should be a clue as well. what humans count as 1GB is not what the computer counts as 1GB, below is the ratio:
    1,000 bytes =1,024 bytes on a computer.
    this is why a 250GB shows up as less, same with the above 256GB stick, i cant do the math in my head but is should show as a 220 and some change

    I've also seen a Data Traveler 101 - supposedly 128 GB, but 16 GB in reality. Extremely slow write performance was also a giveaway (4 MB/second writing is way too slow for a large drive like that) - just as the shoddy build quality. And indeed the capacity shown in the OS of 128 GB insted of the more normal bit lower figure.

    If it holds memory, it isnt fake.
    If it holds memory but not the memory it said on the box, then its semi fake.
    If it holds no memory and is hollow on the inside, then its a USB FlashDrive case.

    the method of calculation is very easy...you take 256GB and make this operation: (256 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000) ...the result is divided by 1024 --- 3 times.
    So multiply by 1000 3 times, then divide by 1024 3 times...Result is 238.4GB

    Jjust open up diskpart, select the appropriate disk (list disk, select disk 2 or whatever), "clean", then create a new partition in diskmgmt.msc.
    What they're basically doing is put a fake partition table on the drive that lies about its own size. So flush the current partition table down the toilet, create a new one, and you'll get the real size.

    There's so much fake memory on ebay
    I got my fingers burnt with shitty slow micro SD cards.
    I need some flash drives to store video, but in light of past experience I am very wary.
    I mean: 64Gb for 8.99 & 128Gb for 9.49 UK Pounds?? I thought the going rate was typically around 1.00 UK pound/Gb of storage space. This from a UK seller of what looks like generic stock, so you still have to be wary wherever you are buying from.
    Did you run 'H2testw on this flash drive before taking the craft knife to it?
    I have downloaded this utility.
    You would hope that if a seller is legit they would test their stock or permit a return.
    A reason why you should not buy from the Far East. What the hell do you do if it isn't legit?
    Any UK 'Tubers know what is the average price/Gb for flash drives?
    Just wanting more guidance on sniffing out the dodgy stuff..........

    It would have been smarter if you just loaded the drive you could have defused so much debates. This information is nearly a waste of time for evidence. If you filled the card up it would have done all of us a great favor but you kind of did the opposite and now you have allot of confused people who can hardly determine the accuracy of this information.
    Plus most people are not remotely tech smart and struggle with basic tech information. Next time just load the card so you can save us all time and headache.
