  • Willie Mays, the Say Hey Kid, played with enthusiasm and exuberance while excelling in all phases of the game -- hitting for average and power, fielding, throwing and baserunning. His staggering career statistics include 3,283 hits and 660 home runs. The Giants superstar earned National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1951 and two MVP Awards. He accumulated 12 Gold Gloves, played in a record-tying 24 All-Star games and participated in four World Series. His catch of Vic Wertz's deep fly in the '54 Series remains one of baseball's most memorable moments.

In one of my Facebook groups there was a poll question asking who the greatest player since 1948 was. I commented Willie Mays is the best player since 1848. There will never ever be another Say Hey Kid

Wow. That didn't even begin to touch on Mays' accomplishments. Not to mention the great human being he was. But I guess a HOF bio can't cover everything... ;)

One of only two "perfect" players in baseball history - no flaws whatsoever. Honus Wagner is the other. He is a treasure.

@stephenvincent id go with that, he was def nasty, you dont see someone who can hit for average, homeruns, and be a nasty fielder, to often.

... It's all true...... but it's also true that he never hit a HR in the 5 World Series he played in. (and Hank Aaron hit 2 in his 2 W. S.)

So, naturally baseball decides to name the World Series MVP Award after a great player from the 1962 series! They start a brainstorm. FANTASTIC IDEA!! "I know, I know!!", shouts one guy in the back. "Let's name it after the guy with 18 WS home runs!! Let's name it after the guy who practically had a dozen key moments in big games in ten or so series! After all, Mickey Mantle is synonymous with October, right"? No, no. We have to give it to the guy who hit barely above the Mendoza line in the postseason (.247) with a single postseason home run. And why did we name it after Willie Mays? I don't know, but it certainly WAS NOT because baseball was pandering to the SJW mob. Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra...yeah, those guys are just not what we are looking for here.

Mays played in 4 or 5 World Series, but did not hit a single WS HR. [Aaron had two in 2.]
