I grew up in Oakland and I remember him catching a short turn-in route against Houston and racing about 90 yards for a touchdown and winning that close game.
Judging by his early accomplishments, it is apparent that Warren Wells was one of the most gifted athletes in pro football history. His receiving numbers from 1967-69 compare with the most elite receivers ever to play the game. Blazing speed and fluid skills forecast a future of unlimited greatness. Then Wells personal flaw of alcohol abuse sent him into a tumbling abyss. This was made worse by time in a rehabilitation facility that was literally a "House of Horrors." Physical and emotional scarring rendered him a shattered shell of his former self. Warren Wells. Legendary talent tainted and forgotten in a haze of personal tragedy.
I remember back in the early 80s I was watching the St. Louis Cardinals play the Washington Redskins and Summerall and Madden were calling the game. Madden said that the Cardinals receiver Roy Green reminded him a lot of Warren Wells. They both wore the #81 also.
During the 60's. As a youth in, Berkeley, California. My uncle, Jessie L. Porter own a Barber shop by the same name. 3108 Grove St. I had the pleasure of playing catch with Mr. Wells in from of my uncle's barber shop. What an awesome man. Memories :)
I heard about Warren Wells in a book about the Oakland Raiders. He was great tight-end but the problems he had off the field is what did him in. On Monday Night Football in 1972. The Oakland Raiders hosted the New York Jets, Frank Gifford mentioned "second and goal for the Raiders, Lamonica had Warren Wells wide right." He was in prison when the game was played.
Gratitude for sharing. Peace to my Fam in The 510 and 907. I had to leave that alcohol alone on 8/18/2013. Peace to anyone dealing with chemical dependence and or mental issues. I've been going through it since a young teen.
When he and Biletnikoff lined up one could beat you with his speed and the other with his precise route running. Lamonica had some of his best years throwing his bombs to them.
The greatest ever Beaumont legend !! Uncle Warren was married to my mother sister Yvonne during his early football season with the Oakland Raiders . We have some of his raiders memorabilia and photos with his autographs. The marriage didn’t last long because of all the scandals and personal problems within this marriage. But he’s was still our uncle and he was truly a Beaumont Legend.. we are alll Hebert panthers finest !!! 💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙
Always wondered why he left the Raiders after the 71 season as he was brilliant on the field. They just replaced him with Branch. But I think you draw the wrong conclusion. Wells had his issues but the State penal system was worse. Had he not spent those months at Synona, he could have been the receiver he was meant to be. And certainly, the State made the wrong decision on the awards benefit. That was just stupid. So, it all wasnt his fault. Heck, the same could be said of Joe Gilliam. Had Al Davis not called Chuck Knoll at Bradshaw's request, Gilliam could have been great. So, it wasnt all Wells's fault and it wasn't all Gilliam's fault.
What a sad story of an extradentary player, one who's name I am not familiar with. Alcohol is such a destructive vice with many who rely on it having their lives cut short. He is remembered fondly and was honored by the club before his death. Those were some incredible stats he put up and Kansas's loss was the Raiders gain. R.I.P. Warren Wells.
My inferred thoughts on Warren Wells is he was a talented guy and played extremely well and would have been successful regardless athletic-wise. I just believe that it could have happened regardless to him with drinking and drugs later in life because it happens everyday to a lot of people out there. Just do not believe he was immuned to substance abuse because back then and now there is a prevalence of it where it was a cultural thing back in those times. His choices to drink caused his problems and led him to dark roads cost him his career and his health sad to say. He was a phenomenal football star. It really is a cautionary tale for everyone out there athletic-wise or fan-wise! RIP Warren Wells!
At that time Beaumont was known as Pro Football capital of the world as they constantly put out Pro Football Players. Hebert, Charlton Pollard, Beaumont High, French, Forest Park and South Park high schools.
Madden said it...if he didn't get in trouble...he would have been the greatest of all time... All pre 1975 rules...the blunt rule... In his day...he went up against the bump and run and liberal rules concerning tackling...
Grew up a few miles from Coliseum…watched the Real Raiders w/Dad ‘67-‘71(buying tickets in A lot off the many scalpers)…have stubs from Heidi game as well as many others…Blanda, Lamonica (the OG Mad Bomber) to Wells…given the assault ‘ok ‘type secondary rules of the day ( see Tatum/ Atkinson), Warren easily the $35m guy of his day…but given the social era (Black Panthers popped in Oakland, and across country, for a reason), no way…look at all the straight felons the nfl has tolerated since
He was such a great guy it was everybody else who got it wrong. The booze, drugs and criminal activity was not his fault. Nobody buys this stupid garbage anymore. If he took responsibility for his actions he could have been a good not great football player.
You say .."In addition to his abilities as a wide receiver; .Warren also demonstrated great versatility by playing in other positions !!! Including Punter , Kicker ,and even as a back-up defensive back ...!!! CAN You stop with the LIES ...Warren Wells Never ,even once ; EVER Kicked ,or Punted , or played a defensive position , .In his entire NFL career ... only t6hing he was an all-time great at was at "Abusing and Raping woman"
I watched Warren Wells play when I was a kid I used to try to be like him when I was playing high school football. He was the greatest him and Fred were a devastating team together. I believe Fred was the wide receiver on the left and Warren was on the right side to do with too much. That’s why the Raiders were really the Raiders.

That was a crazy story. I remember seeing him in highlights of the sixties and wondering why his career didn't last that long

I loved watching WW and he was one of the greatest ever
@@jonmeek3879 would have had a great career if the alcohol and legal problems did not get in the way.

John Rauch was the HC of the Raiders in 1967. Davis was the GM.

27% of his receptions were touchdowns. Epic and monumental skills. Warren Wells was one of the greatest.
He was my favorite Raider, he made it all look so easy.
I agree.
Gratitude for sharing.

What a sad sad story! They put them in that place called whatever it was synonym and that ruined his life basically
Imagine the money Warren could have earned in today's game. Very talented, but troubled man. A damn shame.
Warren was the Randy Moss of his era.
Right there talent wise with Cliff Branch!
I got to see warren play he played for the Raiders when the Raiders were the Raiders
Jeez I miss those RRRRAIDERS!!!😢
When he and Biletnikoff lined up one could beat you with his speed and the other with his precise route running. Lamonica had some of his best years throwing his bombs to them.
From What I Seen On The Field,He Was An Outanding Player 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
WW was no joke
Before Biletnekoff and Branch , Wells was the man ! Look at his stats !

Great video.❤❤❤❤
Losing Wells might have cost the Raiders 3 or 4 Lombardi Trophies in the 70s
Too bad WW is not in fantasy football today, cause he would be #1

Mr. Wells had a tragic life. But Cliff Branch had more than three times as many receptions, and he only was HOF inducted posthumously.
Beaumont Texas legend
A Beaumont Texas rapist.

He was a rapist. Why feel sorry for the loser.
He was a rapist. Why feel sorry for the loser.
He was arrested in the locker room after the game. 😂😂
Imagine Warren Wells, Fred Biletnikoff, Cliff Branch and Dave Casper for about 10 seasons together...

How about doing a piece on Dan Birdwell?
