Light and AF are why I chose Sony, don't want that advantage to be negated by heavy unlikely to be taken out f1.2 primes and f2/2.8 zooms. That's also why I am using sigma primes on APS-C and Tamron for zooms.

So glad you did this review. A year ago I bought an A7R (the original, 36M), a shop display model. Plus the Samyang 35mm f2.8. Total cost about $1800 CAD, 550 grams total weight. Okay, the autofocus sucks on this model, so I manually focus, which I prefer anyway. I can carry this combo around my neck all day, and not even notice it's there, which encourages me to take pictures and not leave the camera in my backpack. I mainly do landscape and shut down to f5.6 or 8, so corner quality is great. Will probably get the 18mm next and then the 75mm, and I'm done. As you say, so glad a manufacturer has a range of lenses to meet my needs for a lighter and cheaper alternative for a full frame camera.

I have the Samyang 35mm f/2.8. Surprisingly, it works very well as a backup lens with the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM for sport events when in the end you want to take a group photo of all the players.

Some stores actually sells these primes in a bundle of 3 lens, a dock, and a peak design lens holder.
It basically helped me upgrade and switch my system from Nikon DX to Sony FE.

I have the Samyang 35mm F2.8 for my original A7, works a treat, makes for an ultra compact full frame travel kit that is plenty sharp enough and weighs virtually the same as competing micro four thirds gear but giving me subject separation equivalent to an f1.4 lens on m4/3 which would be much heavier.

I bought the 35 and kept it for about a week. Something about it just didn't inspire me like I hoped. I wish it had, I spent a lot of time with a old 35mm Nikon. But I just was never really pleased with the images. Enjoyed this review/discussion though. I still think about how the 75 could be one I'd really like. Maybe one day.

Got a great deal on the set of these a few months back. They all perform better on my FF than my apsc as is normally the case with FF glass. If I was to rank them on iq I'd probably go 45,75,18,35,24 the portability and price is hard to beat. Should be noted that the lens station is needed to upgrade firmware, I believe all except the 75 have had improvements to autofocus.

i agree with your thoughts and opinions.
    i have the 45 1.8 and 75 1.8.
I enjoy bringing and using them for being lightweight. I would spend a day with just 1 lens and it forces me to think and be creative with my shots. For travel i bring a zoom lens like the 24-105 plus a samyang prime.

Provoking vidoe as always:). Like how you present the info and further comparison. I have a 24 and 25 from Samyang as well. I use and carry the 24 every single day. I am an IT eng who need to bring a laptop and some bunch of stuff. To be able to carry them with a lightweight camera combo (A7s + 24) is a grace.

Life is full of compromises and choices. I prefer primes, but I want my travel kit to fit into a bag I can stuff under an airline seat. So I did get one zoom for the kit, a 16-35mm GM which hurt my wallet but not my back as it covers three focal length I use a lot, 18, 24 and 35. The Sony 55 1.8 is a cracking good lens which is reasonably priced used, but the Sony FE 50 1.8 is probably a better deal. The Sony 85 1.8 offers a lot of bang for the buck. But that is about it for Sony bargains. Sigma FF E lenses offer good value but are not budget lenses. Tamron, Samyang and Viltrox have jumped into the FE AF budget prime market and I wish them well. But unless I split my kit into day and night kits I think I am good for the foreseeable future. I'll save my GAS for the a new FF body that will make me want to demote my current body to backup. 😅 It won't be the rumored FF in a EVF-less A6600 body.

Thanks for another interesting and thought-provoking video.
I also hate the 'senior' label. FFS, I was in my twenties, just a few years ago! But I do recall when Sigma and Tamron were the scrappy newcomers.
If I am honest, I'll say I enjoy carrying a backpack of equipment much less, these days, and my eyes are not as sharp as I'd like. With autofocus and EVF, this is less of an issue, so I am assuming here that even though you don't have autofocus with these lenses, focus peaking is still available. Eye glasses and viewfinders don't always go well together, so learning to use a screen for focusing is good practice, I think.

I would spend a little more money and get the Sigma trio. The Sigma 16mm, 30mm and 56mm are all f1.4 and super sharp. I picked up the 30mm for $229 on the Adorama deal of the day. The 16mm was on sale also one time, but I missed it.

Hugh - 10:05 - which two zooms? - - Also yes...small and light for "seniors"...I'm with you...which is also a strong argument for MFT. - Also...I might wonder, esp when using, say, an A7R-series camera and all those megapixels...would buying a higher quality prime and cropping more readily eliminate some of the intermediary focal lengths? So the question then being: to buy more Samyangs or fewer higher-quality primes for the same-ish money? Anyway yes, 3 cheers for Samyang's offerings.

@@3BMEP OK...right...I remember you mentioning those two in other videos. Thanks for the quick reply Hugh.
My heart is with MFT, but my incessant pixel peeping keeps me in full-frame (that, and I crop a lot - birds and surfers).
Honestly though, there is, to me, something kind of intangible about a full-frame image (I saw it all the time in my old D600 as compared to my old G7)...I believe it's something that comes across as "analog" and connects with my brain in a deeper way than I otherwise might expect...probably due to the almost imperceptible differences in noise (even in bright light) and color depth of a larger sensor - the images feel more like "real life"(?) I suppose, to me.
That said, I've never had the pleasure of using a really good lens on MFT, esp on more modern MFT sensors like the G9. Maybe I should try to arrange that. :) As yes, Panasonic has great ergonomics and features and is SO much nicer to carry around.

Re: bokeh. I agree with your sentiment, save for when bokeh is distracting. Do give way too much attention to good to "great" bokeh? Yes and that is a great point. But there are a handful of lenses where the bokeh is just not pleasant and distracts the viewer. Then we should care.

I only have one Samyang lens so far-- a fast, wide angle manual focus prime. It's a wonderful lens, easily competitive with the old FD mount equivalent from Canon (better in some ways) and without the red ring tax. I'd definitely consider getting more, but I've had too much fun with this one to really want anything else on my camera when I'm shooting for my own enjoyment.

Hello, I considered some of these lenses, but are they actually sharper than my 24-70 f/4 Zeiss at the same focal lengths? Maybe the 24mm but I doubt the 45mm which is the one I was more interested in. As for kit zooms, sorry but from my limited experience I disagree; for example the tiny fuji 15-45 is sharp and also has very good flare resistance as in this example flic.kr/p/2hWc3Sw . And the same is for the Nikon af-s 18-55 vr ii ....

@@carlkim2577 Knowledge will save your time. There's only E mount. All lenses for it work on both aps-c and full frame cameras, with the same crop 1.5x on aps-c.
FE means lenses will cover full frame sensor on the E mount, but it's still the same E mount. If you have aps-c E mount camera, doesn't matter if the lens is able to cover full frame, all work on aps-c regardless. Also not every lens manufacturer will specify/mention FE directly, sometimes they use different symbols, because even FE lenses are for E mount.

@@PetrKlapper wow could you be more condescending? I'm aware of all that. Otherwise how could I have noted the difference? But I'm only interested in aps-c. And it shouldn't be an issue to to properly label a lens as e or fe mount in the title. It's the convention recommended by Sony.
