Scotty, does driving under 2500rpm from the lube joint to the house probably not kill anything? Got to my pump (Harbor Freight) ASAP, a whole quart over, and the oil was dark brown! Obviously, they hadn't drained the oil long enough then used the computerized pump set to 5q (the norm for 97 Toyota Avalon), without thinking. I checked the level before leaving, showed the guy, he said "well sure, older cars will read that way on the dipstick". I called HIM a dipstick, he offered to redo it, I say, "you are never touching my car again", left, came back next day, described to manager, went back today, mgr told me he fired the dipstick. There are smart people out there!
I dont know why people hate on him. He is speaking in terms of reliability. He just advices you to take care of your car so it can last as long as possible
Yep I heard about this before. But I did learn something new today about the consequences of putting too much oil in your car's engine. Some engines are prone to fail or better yet blow easily than other engines but any engine whether it's bulletproof or not can break, real talk.
Driving back from my shop, I saw a guy in an older (80's) Toyota having issues. Car was running bad, and it was puking thick white smoke. I was in the shop truck, so I stopped to see if I could help. Guy said he'd just done an oil change and could not understand why it was running so badly. He opened the hood, pulled the dipstick for the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, and said "look, it's right where it should be!" Opening the filler cap showed oil, covering the camshaft. On an OHC engine. Told him to "Go across the street to the Fry's (Kroger) and get a kitty litter pan, a sack of kitty litter, and aroll of paper towels.". I swear, I drained at least two gallons of oil from that engine. But now, it had the proper volume of oil. It smoked a LOT, but that stout little mill eventually cleared up. I took a yellow paint marker and colored the engine dipstick so he could find it easier.
In addition to checking the oil when the engine is cold, it is also important to pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, and put it back in and pull it out a second time to get an accurate reading. As oil cools and changes viscosity (thickness) it will tend to creep up the dipstick, which will give a false reading of having more oil, than is actually is in the engine. I've seen it creep up the dipstick 1/4 to 1/2 inch, which created an artificially high reading.
Great video Scotty and a very important one too. On some occasions when my car's been at the garage I noticed they topped the oil up way too high. So I made my own vacuum pump from a big syringe and a bicycle brake cable in case I ever need to drain it out again. I think some mechanics are a bit clueless and tend to check oil levels after engine's been running.
I once put too much oil in my Tercel. Once on the road at high rpm, it did a huge opaque oil smoke cloud. It was only for a moment. Then I returned home , drained the oil and the engine was fine.
Great, great video! Thanks Scotty. I've always checked my oil when the car is cold because that's how my Dad taught me. Now it's nice to see it confirmed.
Make sure you check the owner manual of your car for instructions on how to properly check oil level in that vehicle before claiming they overfilled. Many manufacturers instruct you to warm and cool the engine before checking the oil level.
@@zarbon700 you are right, the instruction manual of my 2015 car says have the engine on operating temperature, then shut down and leave it for 5 minutes on level surface, then check the oil level.

I have a Toyota Matrix and went to Walmart for new wiper blades. The mechanic looked at the rear wiper and said that I would have to take it to the dealership to change rear blade. He said that the dealership will have to remove it and install. I said okay and drove across the street at AutoZone. I never mentioned what the technician said at Walmart. I asked for new wiper blades. Inside a minute he had all my wiper blades installed. I watched him flick a switch on rear wiper and it took a second to change. Hey, that's the LAST TIME I had my oil changed there!!!!
It all depends on where you go. I used to work at a Car-X as a lube tech. The owners son (who ran the place and trained me on how he wanted things done) was very specific on how to do it the right way and no car I did ever left over filled. I would bet my life on that. Of course that was not so much a 'quick lube' because they ran by appointment at 20 minute intervals usually.
I have a theory that they don't even change your oil but still charge you for it and say they did. Probably not true, but I still like doing it myself just so I know for sure what is being done to my vehicles.

Ha reminds me of a buddy who asked me to follow him to gas station. I thought he wanted to make sure he didnt run out of gas, turns out he didnt know how to pump it!
Thank you Scotty, that was very informative. Especially the part about checking oil on flat surface and when engine is cold. Apparently more isn't always better.
Always double check your oil level, especially if you didn't change it yourself. I've experienced a shop that forgot to do the oil change at all and another shop that drained and either didn't refill it or left the drain plug off. (I did not check for the latter.) Beware of rapid lube places, a coworker had his drain plug cross-threaded by one. His "rapid" lube was anything but.
I have a 2008 SAAB 9-5 and take it to a talented SAAB-only specialist for my 3,000-3,500 mile synthetic oil change. I bring him the oil and filter and he changes the oil. Never charges me. I use Mobil 1 0w-40 full euro and after 96,000 miles it run great, never burns any oil.
When drag racing or road racing high horsepower applications it is common to overfill the crankcase by 2 quarts to prevent oil starvation. If not using a dry sump.
I've over filled my oil, my diesel engine went straight to redline and smoked out my whole street, happened 4 years ago and the truck still runs fine, I was young and dumb back then, thank fudge my truck has a strong motor
Thank you Scotty! Many years ago, my young sister-in-law was driving a 1969 Nova. I think it had a flat head 6 cylinder. (Can't remember). She said her oil light was on and it did not go out even after she added another quart of oil. It had an oil leak so when the light came on she just added another quart of oil. I pulled the stick and sure enough, the oil was way up the stick. I think it might have been 3 quarts too high. I ask her when was the last time she had the oil changed. "I haven't had it changed". She drove the car everyday for 2 years. I guess she thought because it leaked, she did not have to change it. LOL. I changed the oil and the filter and the oil light went out and I think she drove it several more years after that. They don't make em like that anymore. :-D
My brother actually ran a 2001 completely dry of oil. Hit 2 deer and a tree. I drove it to the junkyard a few years later. And he actually did put 18 quarts of oil into a 97 Nissan xe pickup 4cyl auto. It ran 8 almost 9 more years.
Never knew that but I suppose that's because the pump is using oil so fast that the sump level gets low and the pump can be starved of oil until the sump refills which will kill the pump and engine
HostileLemons I agree. Euros tend to have higher sump capacities and baffles in the oil pans. I keep mine topped up. Hot lube oil sent to bearings is lovely. Foamy oil/air mix is bad. I tend to drive more spiritedly when I am a solo driver 😉 😉.
The actual reason for checking your oil level when the engine is cold is because after running the engine all the oil passages are filled with oil and all components are also coated with oil, so it takes a while for the oil to drip down and collect into the oil pan.
The only time I ever took my car to a quick oil change place thy waay overfilled the oil. I'm glad I checked it when I got home. I have never went back to one since.
Regarding checking oil when cold. Both of my cars say to check it 3-5 minutes after shutting off from reaching operating temp. If it’s cold, most of the oil in the upper engine will fall down into the pan and give a high reading on the dipstick, at least for the cars I’ve worked on.
22 years ago pression tune put 7 quarts oil in my 1987 olds cutlas 307. I checked it before I left and made them drain and start over. I've been changing the oil n filter in my 2002 s10 4.3 myself for 15 years
About 20 years ago my buddy took his Pontiac Aztec to a quick change oil place. They neglected to drain the oil and added another 5 quarts. He made it home a few miles and then noticed oil all over the place when he parked! They towed it back and drained the oil. It didn't seem to do any permanent damage but he didn't have it much longer after that. Another reason to do your own oil changes.
Morning Scotty! Thoughts on buying a car that has a bad head gasket? I'm looking at a 2001 Honda CRV for $500. Owner says it has a bad head gasket. Can I fix this myself? Is it worth the time and money? Thanks!
It depend how many miles on it but 500 dollars something gonna be wrong with it if u don’t drive much then u might as well fix it up if u drive often then I would save money up and get something better
Scotty has said before that if you are buying a car and the seller says it has a blown head gasket, then beware. It might be the head gasket, sure, but that might not be the problem. It could be a cracked engine block or something else. If you still are interested in buying the car, then he always says - find a mechanic like him to check it out because if the engine block is cracked or if the head gasket has been blown for a long time, then there could be other problems like Antifreeze in the oil which can cause excessive wear and tear to all the moving parts that need it and so on. So, the $500 might seem like a good deal, but it's going to be a bad day if you buy it and then find out that the whole engine needs to be replaced.
How many miles?. The premium FelPro kit for that CRV is about $100. See if hell take $100 off incase the head is cracked or warped, or valves are bent. It may have a bad head gasket, but it probably needs a little more.

If 6 quarts is good, 10 quarts must be better. 🤷♂️ 🤣
@@mistamaog A 4 on the floor automatic 2.3L 83 mustang L however does not. I killed my mustang with too much oil when I was 16 and just learning about cars. Lol I miss that car it was so cute.
I had a roommate who filled an engine completely full with oil, it was HILARIOUS. Luckily, he was in the parking lot of Walmart that had an auto center, so he just drove it around back and had them drain the oil. The cloud of smoke that it made was HUGE.
to be honest alot of engines do use 10 quarts now, my 2018 mustang takes 10 qts
Only with Whiskey, not motor oil.
My Toyota Yaris 1.3vvti accord to user manual book takes 3l of 5w30 when just change oil or 3.2l when changing with the oil filter that what I did and guess what? I overfilled. Because you never drain the 100% oil from the engine. Now I just put 2.5-2.7l when changing oil +filter and is perfect- gives 80%level
Hello Mr. Kilmer I have a Honda crv 2010, I recently had to go to Honda to have something changed for recall. Honda told me too much oil was put in when I had an oil changed I thought it was impossible but after seeing this video I realized it wasn't impossible.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom of many years with us Scotty. All the best to you and your wife.
I really enjoy your videos!! Being a girl and having a love for cars I enjoy the information you teach !! Thank you
Didn’t you just clean your garage?

Hey, don't you know what it costs to ship a 16-ton press? !!!
Good stuff, Scotty. Most of us car guys know this about oil levels, but some people still don't. Good important info. Thanks.
Of course too much oil is a bad thing. That's what "too much" means.
Thanks Scotty you are The Best will help many People to Take Care 🚘 We love What You are doing Now Thanks Again .🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Scotty, very nice explanation.
Unfortunately, your arm and hand gestures , about half way through, explaining pistons and crankshafts, would get yourself arrested in the UK for " lewd behaviour"
I really dig your editing; those birds cracked me up everytime. You really know how to make these videos entertaining.
Professor Scotty, has a common sense degree. 😎🚘
Hey Mr. Kilmer, Before I forget , and my busy mind wanders off to something else, I just wanted to say thank you. I noticed the 101st AIRBORNE tag on your Texas plates. I can only assume that's you, soooo....Thanks for serving ! Also...Thanks for making and posting the videos that you do. Your doing the country a great service with your channel. All the actors and entertainers in the world can't even approach the value of what your doing here. A good legacy, Thanks so much.
Wao He is very best and very very Loyal mechanic ... ❤️ What you think guys ?

This is true. Never over fill. Total catastrophic in epic proportions can happen.
Scotty can you do a video on manual transmission fluid flush. Manual vs automatic trans. There no videos specifically on manuals transmissions.
Don't do it, just change the fluid. Flushing can cause alot of problems.
Fluid flush can cause problems manual transmission? I thought that was only for automatic transmission.
@@cristiancenteno6876 Your manual transmission is 9/10 times just splash gears, meaning it lubricates all the gears via rotating the oil and splashing it. Not really much you can do to flush it, when it drains almost all the oil comes out. If you want to take the extra precaution, it wont hurt it, but theres really not much of a benefit to it nor downside, I should say.
@@FeelFighters spoken like u know your stuff.
On your Manual make sure you remove the "Fill" Plug first before the "Drain" Plug and you are good to go.
After 40 years of DIY changing oil I never heard anyone address this rare but real problem. I would imagine the express oil changers with their automatic gun fillers can potentially have this problem.
Dealerships always over-fill, I knew they had a motive.
Thank you, I'm going to lose hours of sleep per night now thinking about oil killing my car 👌
03:28 The piston's connected to the... wrist pin. The wrist pin's connected to the... con-rod. The con-rod's connected to the... crank-shaft. The crank-shaft's connected to the... flywheel...

AND THAT'S WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

I've had a few friends share these videos with me now. I'm anything but a grease monkey. Scotty, your videos are saving my friends having to tell me these things time and time again. You're funny as hell and an absolute champ to learn from. Subscribed.
Had a roommate one time that asked me if I could change his oil, I said, sure man, I can do that. this boy got a random oil filter at Walmart and one quart of oil. Lol.
This was a great comment haha. Thank you.
Apparently more isn't always better.

scotty this is fantastic. I've asked my brother who is a mechanic this question about what if overfill and he just said "don't do it" lol

Rev up your cooing pigeons! Always good content, Scotty!
That bird at 5:50 😂
When drag racing or road racing high horsepower applications it is common to overfill the crankcase by 2 quarts to prevent oil starvation. If not using a dry sump.

Do you recommend a Short-Throw oil dipstick?
What? Did you make that up?
Lol
I've over filled my oil, my diesel engine went straight to redline and smoked out my whole street, happened 4 years ago and the truck still runs fine, I was young and dumb back then, thank fudge my truck has a strong motor
First to rev up your engines!
Something that simple but so helpful thank you Scotty

Where can I get a longer dipstick? Mine is barely reaching the oil.
What?
LOL
Good morning Scotty!
Today is my birthday!
morning, happy birthday!
Happy birthday dude also I'd make a joke about the weather but most people mist the point.
Happy birthday pisces 😁
phuk offndy ➡️ tomorrow is my birthday 🎂😃
Same here! Happy Birthday! Don't overfill your oil today!
My brother actually ran a 2001 completely dry of oil. Hit 2 deer and a tree. I drove it to the junkyard a few years later. And he actually did put 18 quarts of oil into a 97 Nissan xe pickup 4cyl auto. It ran 8 almost 9 more years.
European makers frequently specify adding +1 extra quart during spirited driving / track.
Not 2, just 1.
5:26 "all you gotta do is get a clean drain pan" proceeds to show a dirty drain pan hahaha
The only time I ever took my car to a quick oil change place thy waay overfilled the oil. I'm glad I checked it when I got home. I have never went back to one since.
your wife must love your hands great technique great follow through 😂😂
Regarding checking oil when cold. Both of my cars say to check it 3-5 minutes after shutting off from reaching operating temp. If it’s cold, most of the oil in the upper engine will fall down into the pan and give a high reading on the dipstick, at least for the cars I’ve worked on.
First to like and comment and watch. Hi Scotty 👋 how are you and your wife??

22 years ago pression tune put 7 quarts oil in my 1987 olds cutlas 307. I checked it before I left and made them drain and start over. I've been changing the oil n filter in my 2002 s10 4.3 myself for 15 years
MORNIN SCOTTY!
morning!
Thanks!
Connor McNeil go get it done professionally bro don’t try to do it yourself
It depend how many miles on it but 500 dollars something gonna be wrong with it if u don’t drive much then u might as well fix it up if u drive often then I would save money up and get something better
If you can change a alternator you can probably do a head gasket if not dont do it
Scotty has said before that if you are buying a car and the seller says it has a blown head gasket, then beware.
I’m going to check my oil right now
AOC says you can’t have oil!
