  • There are requirements for any officer, no matter which route you take. They are:
    Be between 18 and 34 years of age.
    Be a U.S. citizen.
    Have at least a bachelor’s degree.
    Complete the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualification Test, like the ASVAB but for officers)
    Be physically fit
    Complete OCS/OTS (Officer Candidate School/Training School)
    No drug use, criminal history etc.
    For healthcare, legal, and ministry career fields only, you must:
    Be between 18 and 48 years of age.*
    Be a U.S. citizen.
    Have a career-relevant degree or postgraduate degree.*
    Be licensed and eligible to practice in your field.
    LEAD Program/Air Force Academy
    The Leaders Encouraging Airman Development (LEAD) Program is an ongoing effort to give the best and brightest airmen the opportunity to excel by offering them appointments to the United States Air Force Academy. There are 170* appointments available for the Academy [per year] and the Academy Prep School for regular and reserve airmen. The program delegates authority to Unit Commanders to nominate highly qualified airmen to attend the Academy or Prep School. Commanders have the opportunity to identify outstanding and deserving airmen with officer potential for this commissioning program.
    Requirements:
    Be U.S. Citizen, or be able to obtain citizenship before entry into the Academy the following year
    Be 17 years of age for direct entry but not have reached your 23rd birthday by July 1st of year of entry
    Be 17 years of age for Prep School but not have reached your 22nd birthday by July 1st of year of entry
    Be unmarried
    Bear no legal obligation to support a child or other individual
    Not be pregnant
    Be of high moral character
    Complete the SAT, ACT or both for the application
    SOAR Program:
    SOAR credits active duty enlisted personnel the opportunity to separate from active duty Air Force, and go to a school of your choice full time as an ROTC cadet. This option is free, however competitive as there are only 51 slots given per year. The tuition cap is set at $18,000 per year.
    Requirements:
    Applicants must have at least 24 hours of graded college course work with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have a minimum ACT composite score of 26 or an SAT combined Reading and Math score of 1180 or an AFOQT Academic Aptitude score of 57. Applicants are not authorized to pursue a second bachelors or graduate degree. Degree plans should be in full year increments (ex., 2, 3, 4 year academic plan).

    My son is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy and received a commission in the USNR. Several of his classmates received commissions in the AF. You are free to join any branch that will have you. At graduation you wear the uniform of the branch you are commissioning to. Just another option. We help out our congressman at all academy nights he hosts and they always point out this option.

    I'm a cadet and its possibly the easiest thing I have done. It does take a lot of your time but its easy and really fun. You network and meet a lot of VERY important people. You meet generals, colonels and other senior officers. It is definitely rewarding and fun. Depending your college they will pay for your school with the incentive money the program has (every college ROTC program has incentive) or an AF Scholarship. Also, you can join ROTC at anytime during your college career! I highly suggest it because in my eyes its the easiest way to get in and get your degree for free.

    Just graduated from ROTC this past winter. One of the pros is that we all receive AD slots. However it can be sometimes competitive like Field Training (which is like our boot camp). If you have any questions let me know. Great video by the way WildBlueYonder.

    So if I'm an active duty airman and pursue a degree on my own (kinda like what you are doing) do I just apply to become an officer like anyone else with a degree would do? Also, would I be able to leave for Officer training if I still had time left on my contract? for example, if I get a degree 4 years into my contract, but I signed up for 6 years, would I still be able to leave for officer training? Hope that all made sense lol. Keep up the great videos!

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  8 років тому +7

      +trenton2916 It's slightly different for active duty Airmen. You'll have to submit a "package" to your chain of command, go through a review process, be appointed by your Commander, and obviously meet the requirements to become an officer in the first place. It's really not difficult if you are on your game and are a top notch Airman. This includes education, job performance, and physical excellence. It also doesn't hurt to really get to know your Commanders and make sure they know exactly who you are, what you do, and where you want to go. Once you get nom'd you just separate and go to OCS. Pretty simple process if you know the right people and are on the ball with your requirements and paperwork. As for your second question: Yes, you can separate from enlisted to go to OCS before your contract is up. Good question! I should've mentioned all of this in the video. Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have more questions, and good luck!

    I'm leaving for basic in June, going to be some kind of maintainer; I dont know what type of aircraft ,I'll be assigned a week or two into basic. I'm just written in as 9TM51, mechanical aptitude area. After completing my current contract I want to become some kind of officer. Is there anything else you can elaborate on for this? Like at what point in my enlisted career I should make it known and how I would go about doing it, and subsequently what I will then have to do. It seems like a good position to prepare would be dorm chief in basic, so Ive been preparing intensely for all aspects of basic (with a ton of help from your previous videos)

    I'm through college now. I talked to an officer recruiter from the local Air Force base last semester and I am currently studying to take the AFOQT later this month. My goal, like many, is to fly jets. I apparently misunderstood something along the way. I was thinking after I graduated with my degree, and scored well enough on the AFOQT I could join and go straight into officer training. I just checked out the Air Force's website again tho and now recognize that it says "enlist and work toward becoming an officer." The reason I'm not considering ROTC is how I understand it I would have to meet the physical requirements to be a pilot, to do the ROTC with the intention of being a pilot? Something like that. Problem is my vision is pretty bad. That's why I met with the officer recruiter in the first place, to verify that I could have LASIK and not be disqualified from a pilot position. So depending how I score on the AFOQT my plan was to get LASIK next summer so that by the time I graduate I could go straight into it. Thats a lot of backstory. My question is do you have any idea roughly how long it would take to get into office school, if I enlist with a 4 year degree? My ASVAB in highschool was either 72 or 78 percentile, and my college GPA is 2.9 something right now, I'll have it somewhere around 3.0-3.2 by the time I graduate tho. Also I took a practice AFOQT online a little while back and after adding the five appropriate sections together for the cumulative "pilots" score I had a 105, and after a little searching I think that was pretty good but its just an online practice test so not very reliable lol. Any help would be much appreciated!

    • @MrDJayOfficial
      @MrDJayOfficial 7 років тому

      DO NOT ENLIST! In all honesty, you have a better shot at getting a pilot slot if you do ROTC rather than Officer Training School (OTS). The pilot slots trickle down from ROTC to OTS so basically OTS gets the leftovers. OTS pretty much selects people with technical or mathematical degrees so you will have a better chance at getting into OTS if you have one of those degrees. I understand that you already have your degree, so I wouldn't tell you to do ROTC just to have a better chance at getting a pilot slot but if that's something you want to do then it may be an option. I would look for any type of special program they may have. Like a two year program. I do believe that the cut off for being a pilot is 28. If I were you, I would just take the ASVAB, score well on it, then apply to OTS. If you're deadset on becoming a pilot then do ROTC, but there is a slight chance that if you go to OTS they will have a pilot slot; however, if your vision isn't corrected then you wont get it. You do not want to enlist. That may just re-route you to where it will take more time to get where you want to go, it at all. The only thing I can say is that if you are enlisted, then the Air Force will pay for your lasik surgery, but maybe one of those programs will as well.

    • @Rickie53
      @Rickie53 7 років тому

      Thanks thats some good advice, and kind of how I suspected it work if I enlisted. I'm not done with college yet, but I just finished my junior year, so it's too late for ROTC for me I'm pretty sure. I took the AFOQT, in december 2016. Before I came home from college I called my officer recruiter to set up meeting hopefully later that day so I could talk to him some before I went home. I should have done that sooner I know, but before I even left a message he texted me and said "I'll call you back shortly" an hour and 45 minutes later I sent another text to him saying that I wanted to meet that day if we could before I went home from college, this was at 3:45 now, at 5:20 I gave up and went home, that was 4 days ago, and he still hasn't returned my call. Im going to get lasik this summer, and I'm thinking about enlisting in the Navy next summer, maybe try to be a pilot, maybe not. I'm just going to see how stuff goes for now, ill try to take the Navy's AFOQT equivalent before then.

      So if you have a degree in one of those areas above and you are already a practicing lawyer, doctor, priest or pastor, then you will just apply to Officer Training School, just as others with degrees in different fields; however, they will put you all in a separate basic training program called Commissioned Officer Training with all of the future JAG, Doctors and Chaplains instead of going with everyone else to Basic Officer Training. When you go to Commissioned Officer Training, you will have the opportunity to rank up faster, depending on the amount of experience you have in your field.

    • @attackcat109
      @attackcat109 7 років тому

      You get 12 chances at the ACT. If you are unhappy with the score, study more (maybe enroll in a prep course like the SAT offers) and go again. Imagine the PT where you could scrape by with ok scores, but you know everyone is looking for that 100.
      edit: bad comparison maybe, but I'm just trying to say that you should look for the best scores you can get. Every point counts when you are competing with others.
      also, like my friend did you can still apply to AFA while in a different college. I think he did one year before transferring, but like ROTC they probably cap it there (results may vary).

      1. For AF OTS you must already have a 4 yr college degree in Science/Math/or Engineering (preferred) if you hope to stand a chance with a graduating GPA of 3.0 or better.
      and be under the age of 35 at the time of commissioning. (age exceptions to 48 for Medical/Lawyer/Chaplin
      2. Complete the AFOQT entrance examination similar to GRE.
      3. Pass the standard AF medical requirements.
      4. Complete an application package complete with letters of recommendation that will be evaluated by a selection board.
      5. Applications are then ranked and individuals selected based on rankings.
      6. The selection rate is the problem in that it can be as low as 9% per class or possibly as high as 50% at present which is rare but the AF is expanding at present. There is no way to know in advance as AF needs keep changing.
      7 Outside of the Academy AF OTS is the next hardest way to join. Your best shot is through AFROTC

    do you have to have a bachelors degree to get selected for the LEAD program?

    • @WildBlueYonder

      +sam jacob You don't, you'll actually earn one at the Air Force Academy

    So if you have a bachelors degree, do you have to take the asvab??

    • @andrewschrock6600
      @andrewschrock6600 7 років тому +1

      If you have a bachelors degree, and want to commission, you will have to take the AFOQT. Which is a little harder than the ASVAB. If you choose to be enlisted, you must take the ASVAB.

    How old are you. I'm old I am 28 and plan on joining AF and hopefully be eligible for OTS to be an officer. Do I have a cut off?

    • @MrDJayOfficial
      @MrDJayOfficial 7 років тому +1

      You have to be commissioned by 35. If you want to go through OTS, that program really looks for technical degrees, so if you have one, the better shot you have at getting selected.

    So how does one become an NCO in the Air Force? Does that happen with tenure?

    • @bl00drng2
      @bl00drng2 8 років тому

      +Tatyanna Travis An NCO is an E-5 and above. You first achieve E-4 by tenure, then once given the chance, you test for staff which is WAPS testing, if you make the score needed that year then you will be given a line number and then sew on E-5 on the date given.
      A line number for example is say your line number is 55, well 54 people will sew on before you.

    So if I fail the AfOqt test twice and join as enlisted can I still get my commission in the future via Lead program. Cuz I heard that the AfOqt test is pretty difficult and once you fail twice its all over.

      Just study for it. Most of it is like ACT questions and its not too hard to pass. Now if you want a rated slot then thats when the test really becomes hard if you don't have any aviation knowledge.

      ***** There are online practice books you can buy off Amazon before you take the test. I recommend to get one thats current to 2016 as some old portions of the test have been changed recently like the shape orientation section which is not on the test anymore.

      When you say shape orientation are you referring to the rotated blocks or hidden figures?

    I got my bachelors already, I want to become an officer what would be the best route to take? Enlisting and then applying or applying before enlisting?

    • @danielrigau257
      @danielrigau257 8 років тому

      +Jack Lan but my question is what is the best way because it's not easy to get to OTS

    • @danielrigau257
      @danielrigau257 8 років тому

      +Jack Lan thanks for the info, so I should apply to OTS before enlisting or, should I enlist first and then apply, because I was told you can do both ways but when you are enlisted it's more competitive and when you apply before enlisting the process can take years just to know if the board approved you... Am I correct?

      My best advice is either
      1) Consider applying to the RPA boards. The AF is desperate for them as far as I know.
      2) Get a Masters in a STEM field and apply after that because that would be a very vital tool in making you stand out. That's what got me in as far as I'm concerned. You have until 34 so you have plenty of time.
