Inside Pesäpallo, Finland's Answer to Baseball

  • Pesäpallo, a baseball-inspired sport with a few key differences, has been played in Finland since the 1920's. It features a zig-zag base pattern and a completely bonkers way of pitching that must be seen to be believed.

    The video is slightly inaccurate that in unlike American baseball, we don't do Random Organ Solos. I really wish we did, because that would be *totally awesome*.

      Those organ solos aren't random. They're the "Charge!" fanfare, and "Take Me out to the Ballgame" respectively. They're played at every baseball game.

    Obviously hitting the ball is easier in Pesäpallo, but the pitcher doesn't just lob the ball for the batter.
    The pitcher can:
    - control the height of the pitch to make batting harder
    - position the pitch on the plate, so the ball doesn't just go straight up&down
    - give a curve to the serve
    - make an illegal serve on purpose, as the team inside often aim for a flying start from the base
    Pitcher is by far the most important player in pesäpallo. He/she has to know the best shots of key batter and also play against the coach/game manager of the oppising team to deny these flying starts from bases.

    I saw a couple of pesäpallo games in Finland, and one ritual I thought was cool was that whenever a player crossed home plate they would pump one of their arms in the air.

      +Scott Burry See how runners need to zigzag the field?
      The hit might come just in the level of his head.
      There are many types of hits the batters need,
      depending on the fielding team's positions, the runners positions etc.
      But the big difference in hitting, is the ball has to touch the field inside boundaries
      - there's even a back line! So skill is more important, than just hitting it far.
      They want to get it far and fast, but they need to be clever too, fool the fielding team.
      There's not too much space in the field - for the professionals.
      It's a different case when I play just with my friends :)

    • @kimnice
      @kimnice 7 років тому +21

      Think it this way: Fastest hits are about 110-115mph and some catchers might stand as close as 5-10m away from hitter when pitch happens. Usually this catchers can react and catch balls that coming their way, but..not always. Also..finnish baseball is heavier and harder compared to american version. Also in finnish baseball players bluff to confuse their enemies. They might give the impression that they are bunting and then they quickly change it to hard hits. So catcher might not expect the hit that is coming..

    Americans should scout for young talented finnish baseball players. I mean if they can throw heavier ball at 85-90mph without "charging" (like pitchers do in american baseball)..they haven't even trained for that because in finnish baseball you don't have time to charge your throws.

    • @kimnice
      @kimnice 7 років тому +23

      To create strategic element for the game: It's much easier to actually hit the ball, but there are more restrictions for where you can hit it (if the ball hits ground inside playing field and then goes outside..it's fair hit). This makes this rather complex game. It's extremely rare for pitcher to get hurt by direct hit from ball or baseball bat (about one time in decade when combining top and amateur levels). Pitchers are mostly injured when they go after bunts and they lose their balance when doing it.

    • @Valemustikka
      @Valemustikka 7 років тому +21

      I played pesäpallo for several years and never saw pitcher getting hurt in other than school games with stupid children, pitcher is allowed to grab the ball only after it hits the ground and hitter can only hit a descending ball, so pitcher is never too near the bat, if he is then it is "wrong pitch".

      Home run is when you hit the ball well enough that you make it to the third base. You stop at third and score a run. Then you can try to come home and score another run. So a home run can be worth two runs in the best scenario.

      Ireland has the same population as finland.We have our own national sports as well gaelic football and hurling.The key difference is they are amateur so the players do not have to be payed,nevertheless they are our most popular sports.Because of this popularity and no money spent on players wages the governing body of these sports the GAA has the third largest stadium in western europe croke park with a capacity of 82000.Also ticket prices are low also because of the amateur status.The other thing is ireland is fairly sparsely populated ,but its no where as big as finland so travelling distance is not as much.For example i could get to croke park on the east coast in 3 hours from my home in the west and that would be the average long distance,since the stadium is in dublin which is like helsinki all roads are most of them lead to dublin.
      We have club competitions and they would attract around 5000 for big games.However the major competitions are intercounty competitions.The final teams are picking from counties with usually 100 000 people each.In the hurling this year the combined population would be 250000 the final was a sellout in croke park so was the football and there you have a combined population of 1.4 million because it involves the county and city of dublin that game could sellout 4 times.Pesapallo would have much more games though yor finals are a series GAA has about 90 championship matches which is not much so pessapallo can draw good total attendance ,but low averages.Not saying our approach is better just interesting the different approaches taken to indigenous sport

      Most of the time they miss and nothing happens, so yeah, it's pretty boring. In pesäpallo something is always happening and the ball is in play pretty much all the time, no dead moments.

    • @timomastosalo
      @timomastosalo 4 роки тому +11

      You miss the point. Like the interviewee said: they will outrun most baseball players on 100ms.
      The batter has hard time to place the ball so he can produce runs, but there still happens much more running than in baseball. Plus the runnrs need quick wits when to run, when not - the pitcher doesn't wait permissions from the batter.
      In baseball the duel between the pitcher and the batter is about the only exciting thing.

    • @Megaleka69
      @Megaleka69 2 роки тому +3

      Not saying one is better than another, but thinking that the pitcher just "lobs" the ball for the batter is ludicrous.
      In pesäpallo pitchers have a huge tactical role for team outside.
      They guide other players with positioning if needed, they vary their pitches for each batter and they try to code-break the signs of opposing coach to anticipate their plans.
      They also control the tempo of the game, sometimes it is advantageous to pitch it quickly and sometimes it is better to slow down the pace.
