- Classic Game Room HD reviews CENTIPEDE for Atari 2600, the classic arcade game originally released in 1980! Centipede made its way on to the Atari 2600 in 1982 and is one of the best arcade conversions that you can find on the Atari VCS. While the original arcade machine (and cocktail sit down Centipede machine) had an amazing track ball allowing super precise game play and accuracy, this version of Centipede still handles well and is controlled with the standard Atari joystick or a myriad array of other compatible controllers. CGR uses a Sega Genesis gamepad to play Centipede. Shoot the Centipede bits, blast the spider, get extra lives every 10,000 points and have a great time with this Atari classic. This CGR review of Centipede has gameplay from the Atari 2600 version of Centipede.
Kids these days just don’t know a good UA-cam review about Classic games when they see one! Mark you were the best!!
I love CGR's videos. It's friday morning, I've got a hangover and feel like shit, but when I stick some GCR reviews on everything seems better.
My Dad and I use to have competitions playing this all the time.
centipede! my fav game on the 2600 together with defender
back in the early 80s
2600 or 7800! Centipede was the bomb!
YouthfulElf ...And still is!👍😉
haha I loved the ending. "Hopefully you'll have a cellphone and you could call for help and while you are waiting for the cruise ship to arrive you can download centipede. If you are really lucky the cruise ship will have the arcade version of centipede."
A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes-like an upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball. The user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of the hand to move a cursor. Large tracker balls are common on CAD workstations for easy precision
i bought a 7800 because of cgr, i am an atari convert and absolutely love the 2600 version of centipede, more than the 7800 version its some how more playable, i also have millipede, which is totally on steroids, thank you cgr for making me wonder
Millipede for the 2600 is absolutely unbelievably good. I'd recommend people go for that game because it's more challenging and just an awesome arcade port for the 2600.
Although, Centipede certainly isn't bad.
For me, what the 2600 really got right, was the sense of speed! And the great thing about this port, is that it comes bundled in those spiffy Atari reproduction systems.
Without this game, I would had never EVER started playing video games in the first place back when I was 6 or 7, and this version was the only one I had and started with before I've finally found the coin-op machine at a local small supermarket some months to about maybe a year later. That's when I began to love it even more. When I got the Atari 7800 system dad gave me for Christmas back then, I had Ms. PAC MAN, Pole Position II(both which I also loved and enjoyed) and Ballblazer but unfortunately missed out on the 7800 version of Centipede. Today I finally have that version since I brought a used/refurbished 7800 almost 2 months ago and for me now, that version graphically and game content-wise blows the other 2 atari system versions out of the water while stylistically holds it's own to the coin-op. However this version will still be the godfather of all reasons why I started and still play videogames today.
And yes, I loved the warner-era 2600 artwork of the game a bit over the side art of the arcade game. Especially in the 7800 boxart(eventhough they could have used the arcade game's logo on that one)
The last time I played this Atari classic was back during the summer of 1984 and at the same time a song call,"Centipede",by Rebbie Jackson was released on the radio(I would listen to that song and play this game at the same time).
I loved the bit about the island at the end mark
A track ball is a controller. It's a ball that you roll around for analog control. CGR did a review of the Track Ball for the Atari yesterday.
Nice score.. I spent many, many hours playing this version back in the day. Along with 2600 Defender. Awesomeness!!
Great review!
Wooooow i played tthis when i was 5 . a life ago lol. i fell so emotioned when i see this game . many good memories.
man i love that game i had that as my first atari wicked sound
I own this game, sadly I can't play it because I don't own a 2600. I want one though.
does it work with the paddle controller?
LOL on the cruise ship with the centipede machine. :D Very nice review! Keep it going, and don't let the idiots bother you. "Your" the best... :P
Such a classic game. Me n my old man would be on this for hours at a time!
Cheers again Mark, awesome review =D
heck yes at Quakecon 07 they had the Centipede arcade machine with the track ball it was sweet
We have three copies of Centipede for our Atari 2600. One of them is still in the box. And the box is still in the original shrinkwrap.
One thing I never understood about Atari is they would release a new console and then just release all the same old games for it. Why did they do that? If I had birdass on my 2600, I don't want it to be a premiere game on my 7800. I get the whole nostalgia thing, like VC today, but back then that concept didn't really exist yet in video games.
this is my favorite atari 2600 game of all time
@Evilmonkey66699 Are you referring to the Dreamcast version? Because the XBLA version played fine to me.
There was a comic book about this game. I read about it on a CD of Atari games that was the prize in a box of cereal. It's about an elf who is friends with the centipede and other creatures but an evil wizard puts a spell on them and makes them start destroying the mushrooms garden, which is the elves' food supply. But the elf steal's the wizard's wand and uses it to return his insect friends to normal, Yeah I thought it was dumb, too. ;)
one of my fav games of long ago!
I have the gamne and a Atari 2600. Iove it to play this game.
pft.. you gotta use the colecovision expansion module #1 and then hook that roller controller up to it. "I play it on colecovision!"
the gameboy centipede/millipede is perfect!!!
The 5200 port was a amazing. A near identical arcade port.
My favorite controller for Atari is this joystick with the button on the top.
AWESOME THANKS!!!
Did he? Hmmm...If so, definitely worth checking out. I used to play centipede quite often in the arcades.
IF you have a PS3/360 controller you can use them with your PC/Mac, Xbox controller is pretty much plug and play with PC, but for PS3 you gotta get drivers, quick search will find 'em though!
On Mac you can even use the PS3 controller through bluetooth :)
I like how he doesn't trash this game. I probably played more 2600 than any person on Earth has or ever will. Most people are all about trashing 2600 games.
Why would you need a trackball if you only go left to right?
serious question
You need to try the Atari 5200 version with the Trackball...I prefer it over the 7800 version.
Good review
@falariem That's the Bezerk review. :)
This game is awesome and one of my all time faves. I love me some Centipede and Millipede was better and that rocks.
@MedleyCrew because it has such awkward controls, ridiculous shoot 'em up style boss fights which is also a pain since the way the game controls and your ship's response time doesn't suit those types of encounters and the 3D enviroment doesn't suit a game like this as enemies keep getting behind you or you back up into a enemy and you wont know it till they kill you because it's so hard to see alot of times. That's why.
Very nice
@ilikemewaffle combat , air sea battle , pole position , pitfall and check out some shooting games on CGR :)
@Random90sKid well ima moder gen kid and have a sega genesis nes and snes and i think there more enjoyable than my 360
I know it can, its just, I prefer the console games, because their is a striking lack of platformers for the PC...
all that being said though, I do LOVE the freeware indie market on the pc, their are plenty platformers if you go that way...
so yeah, I have been planing on getting a real nice controler for my computer, and just play freeware with it... and I agree, their should be more face buttons on standard controllers... not THAT big a deal, but it would be nice to have a couple more.
this may sound weird but when i first played atari i played centipede on the flashback 2 and my score was very bad like not even 5000 but hey i was 10 and now i can score over 100000 points very easily. the thing is i didnt play on an actual atari 2600 until a few years later
Nerfmodboy Productions The Atari Flashback 2 is a good system. I'm surprised people don't talk about it anymore.
68735 points is nice. I got my Centpiede 2600 cartridge today, and I died around 16000. But I only have an Atari 7800 controller :P
Well a PC can be displayed on a TV and use all kinds of controllers the one I got is rather standard... rather it have 6 standard faces buttons as well, but only 4... I rather despise how that became the standard. I just did not think maybe I should go online and find a controller i really want. Instead just went to the local store and bought something.
So that is my advice there go online for a good controller that you'll be happy with if you pick that route.
I have the cartridge both on the 2600 and 7800
at the end I highly doubt that but it is possible and you could bring a generator
Why not do some commodore 64 reviews???
If you're talking about the Wii that is. And text is hard to understand if you know what I mean TreyRust. I attempted to express sarcasm when putting quotations in the word "better". By "better" I mean the more mainstream games. I'm not saying they're better though. Look at the "Tales of" series like the recent Tales of Vesperia. It has as many games as final fantasy, but doesent get as much recognition. And guess what? Its better.
yeah, I agree 100% with that comment, text is hard to understand when it comes to emotions...
Did you know there was also a more recent "Centipede" ? it was in 3D, it had a story, and sucked majorly. I bought it for the cheap price of 2 bucks for the PC, but really, maybe you should give it a chance :P
No console beats the 5200 version when used with the trackball controller.
Getting my Atari 2600 in a week.
does anybody remember the story of centipede? something about a prince and his sick/dying father, and a wizard who makes the forest really big... something something, the prince has magic arrows?
not a big PC gamer, I just prefer a standard console controller... and yeah, I agree, the wii is probably the best controller for FPS
I think in other versions you can move up and down.
BlazBlue, Tales of Vesperia, and DBZ have little to no gore. Yes. I still have Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal. True masterpieces. And the 360 isn't the only game I play ya know. I have a DS. And I recently purchased Might and Magic:Clash of Heroes. And TreyRust, games these days have NOTHING but gore. Not to mention, the "better" games are always rated M for mature.
well, you could try. (turns on iphone)
"Dammit!" (No service.)
cool
I got it on the dreamcast
I think it's because he mentioned Centipede is on Xbox Live Arcade...
i just got an atari 2600!! but i only have like 6 good games : defender, miss pac-man, centipede, dig dug, missile command, and frogger. does anyone know of good games i can get for cheap.
I got mine in box with original manual and comic for 95cents
Killzone 2 is fun :o
its on ds on the game called retro atari classics chek it out and review it you might like it
"...if your Atari 5200 isn't on fire" lol
@rune133 how did you know?
Why can't you download by radio?
I play Fallout 3, Dragonball Z Burst Limit, BlazBlue, Devil May Cry, Call of Duty, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden,Tales of Vesperia and the list goes on. Now what was that about me playing other games than FPS and me being a disgrace to so called" Real" gamers?
Alright lolz I was wondering the same thing anyways, cept I started talking about it.
See that Apocalypse guy below? That comment couldn't have been more irrelevant to this video considering the consoles were never mentioned in the entire video.
look at his last review
this game is also for the PS1
@MedleyCrew caues its on xbox live
:D yay
Oh and NitrogenKing, name one time I complained. I didn't complain about ANYTHING.
When the player gets 600 points, it looks more like "boo".
destroy the damn poison mushrooms.
whats track ball?? lol
you would want an iphone so you could call for help, watch some ipod reviews by the classic game room, then download the games :P
Your comment couldn't be any more irrelevant to this video, thanks.
u can go up a little bit too
review spore for the pc
@harrypotter7fan they did perfekt dark waaaay back
depends on what you mean by "better"
the new ratchet games have no gore, games like de blob and a boy and his blob (their killing me with these "blob" names) are some of the better games to come out this generation, and they have no gore at all
i have to disagree with you not all "better" games are mature, littlebigplanet, battlefront, and street fighter dont have blood and gore or are mature and they are amazing games, sure i am seriously looking forward to God of War 3, but a game doesn't have to be M or have blood.
agreed
Atari Collections why u no exist these day
Those are what you would call Fanboy comments :P. I just wonder if there was ever a time without fanboyism.
and if your going FPS the Wii would be the best controller by far playing Metroid Prime reveals that it actually is a controller that makes sense. I wonder who ever thought aiming with an Analog stick was a smart idea? Too bad FPSs are poor sellers on the Wii. Overall I don't see the PS3 or 360 much of a good buy considering if your on youtube you probably have a computer already.
Aberran of the Axiom of Discord
omg om,g flange hongangeooioioioio cent 7up 1st!
Yes thank you for reminding me. Uncharted. Good. LBP also good. Xbox live. 50 bucks a year. Thats nothing. Halo I used to love, now I just play it to bond with friends. And no in my opinion, Killzone 2 isn't very good.
@ElChubbaChubba lol
I didn't want to waste my money on the PS3 upon release. Know why? Because its glutton of a price tag. I would buy one now though since its cheaper.
And oh arnoldaaron, you must be not very well informed. Although 360s break easily (Had mines for 2 years so far, STILL no problems), you don't waste money on it. You send it to microsoft and they fix it FOR FREE. I don't see how buying a 360 is any different than a PS3 considering both consoles are near identical.
@hwen123456789 wow when was the last time u cleaned under there hehehe
