  • At the heart of this Japanese lantern is a bulb in a cylindrical pivoted box. Hot air from the bulb while escaping pushes against the blades. This makes the box spin. As the box spins the pictures on it cast their beautiful shadows on the fixed cylinder. You will see a very beautiful shadow play of images.

this is cool, but wouldn't the wire pivot get really hot and break the bulb? or would that take ages?

what did you use for the spinner?

  • @1crazyfocker

the best thing to use would be stuff that will not burn! i have seen them made out of cans, like coffee cans and so on, even a soda can would work, but you cut out the shapes, or cut out everything but the shapes. but the plastic used in soda bottles i would never use near heat. you might find something else that is not the same type of plastic that would work good too, like a jug or something, but me i would not use plastic for it at all

i'm basically doing the same thing, with a 100 watt bulb, tried to get it very accurate, made sure it wasn't too heavy, but it's not spinning. do you have any tips for me? :D

i like most of the videos. but this one is a death trap. the plastic used in soda bottles shrinks with heat, so you turns this one, a few minutes later it starts spinning....YAY, then a few minutes later, it start spinning faster as the center parts starts to shrink,. then the little paper animals start to fall off, as it slows downs from the shrinking, then it stops as smokes start to rise from where it touches the light bulb, then it wraps around the bulb, smokes then fire...yeah death trap

he told me that i could have it as long as I could help him find it. He thought he put it down on the coffee table when he went to feed the cat. However it was nowhere to be seen. I suspect that @bass109 had something to do with this.
