    Expand for more info:
    Baikal are Russian made shotguns that have a reputation for rugged reliability and simplicity.
    They are seen more as tools fit for purpose rather than things of beauty and it has been said they were built from the steel of melted down Russian tanks.
    I choose the single 20 gauge as my rough camping companion gun because of it's lightness not only of gun but also ammunition. When carrying camping kit a light gun is the way to go.
    Also the ballistics of the Twenty are not far behind the Twelve, throwing good killing patterns at realistic hunting ranges.
    Other bonuses, just one barrel to clean, I don't mind if it gets dirty or wet, easy to repair at home, good spare parts availability.

    My dear fellow. I used 4 Baikal guns over the years an o/u which came with a 26 and 28" barrels, I bought a s/s hammer gun back in 1977 (cost me £53) and a single barrel all 12 bore.
    Had other guns too but with a Baikal you could literally use it as a cricket bat. Spent 17 years wildfowling down in Kent with pigeon shooting too. Moved to Yorkshire in 93 and just pigeon and rabbits along with corvids. In 2014 I changed to air rifle, just pigeon and like you had respect for my quarry. I admire you sir. Now due to age & health I've gave up last August, however, it's still in my blood everytime I see a woodie I look at it and figure out a shot.
    Oh yeah, I miss it.

    When I was a kid, every farmhouse in my part of the country had a single barrel shotgun in it. They were of various manufacturer, age and condition, but they all functioned pretty much the same and we all learned to shoot with them. I feel that the single shot made us better and more careful hunters and I never feel undergunned with one of them to this day.

    Apparently a very educated, wise & ethical hunter with great filming skills as well.
    I also bet that this is one of the few shotguns that will last for great grand children, very simple and handy, yet toughly built. greetings

    Certainly is a lovely gun. It takes me back to my late teens & early 20’s. An old school friend had a farm, 1000 acres worth. We use to harvest pigeons & the odd rabbit with shotguns. Everything was eaten & im often surprised we don’t eat more rabbit & pigeon. It’s a lovely lean meat. I totally agree with you Sandy. There is something burning within us that connects use with the land & our ancestors. It’s like making fire, being outdoors. A link to the past, call it what you will. But I totally understand. Again, very nice gun. Will last a serval generations with care. ATB Andy

    I got an old Bailkal 12g O/U, love it: It shoots, you can use it as a spade or a paddle, works well as a club as well and even without cleaning in 20 years it just works flawlessly!

    That little shotgun that you have there is a beauty. Very simple and very functional and it is absolutely perfect for what you are planning for it. You gave a perfect explanation for why you hunt that I believe sums up how most people who hunt actually feel. In my opinion, the people who are out there in nature partaking in the harvesting of animals have done way more towards the preservation of these animals than anyone else. Thanks for sharing your day with us my friend.

    Yes like others it was my first gun as a young teenager. We used to have access to a bombing range of all places. All unexploded munitions were always dealt with. So no dramas with blowing a leg of our being converted to a red mist. That single barrel Baikal was an incredible gun very accurate and light. I think the old man sold it without my knowledge one year and that was that. Wish I'd taken note of the serial number to try buy it back.

    Those Baikals are a good gun i had a side by side, people would look side ways at it with disapproval but it was a lot of gun for not much money. Further more it put many wholesome meals on the table. The one i had was fitted with sling swivels that others would laugh at they weren't laughing at the end of the day miles from the motor and having to hump their guns when the were dog tired .....................Nice video.................Cheers

I always from the first time till the last time enjoyed and took pride in giving my Rile a No 1 clean after the exercise and it going back into the armory . ( Did i mention "I fecking LIKE guns ")

    I enjoyed the video Sandy.
    Nice little shotgun and the story was great as well.
    Here in the states single shot weapons are overlooked too often. For years my preferred shotgun to take afield has been an old H&R 20 gauge. Its everything you mentioned it should be.
    I'm getting my 1st baikal 12 SxS soon. Its a used older firearm, I hope it's as fun as I think it will be. Again, here in the states doubles are overlooked for either pumps or semi autos. All the best from Oklahoma.

    I have the same gun, just with selective ejector/ extractor. one in 20 g fixed modified, and one in 12 g fixed full. The twenty gauge is my favorite, it is so light and maneuverable. I only shot a dozen ravens or so. 20 g is a bit more challenging, but equally rewarding when successful. Good ethics and morals, and a free guns. congrats.

    Hi Sandy this video just popped up on my you tube feed and has instantly transported me back nearly 50 years. In the 70s I owned a single barrel Baikal 12 bore. I can't remember the model name but I can well remember saving up what little money I good get until I could finally afford to buy it. I used it for many years for general 'mooching about' in the local woods and fields in the days when rabbits and pigeons were still reasonably plentiful.
    Other than having recently bought a modern air rifle for the occasional rat, I haven't shot anything for many years now as I have moved on to 'shooting' wildlife with a camera. However, I totally concur with your views expressed within this video.
    All the best.

    Love it. As others have commented, there's something very satisfying about getting out into the woods with some inexpensive gear. As Chris Packham clearly can't comprehend, it's not mass murder of wildlife, its getting in touch with the age old hunter / gatherer instinct and embracing nature. I enjoyed every minute. BTW, gun is most likely full choke, possibly worth having it opened up a little.

    Brings back a lot of memories for me, Sandy. I miss hunting even more than I miss proper rough camping. Our old club gun was a Baikal O/U 12 bore, that kicked like a mule. Like any shotgun, you have to point it in the right direction to hit something. Doesn't matter if it's a hand made Browning or a Baikal. I've had all types of shotguns, but my favourite for a day on the pigeons was always my trusty Beretta A302 semi-auto. It was like a magic wand, it was so pointable. Three shots was a bonus, and you can stuff more rounds in without stopping. Handy when they're coming in thick and fast. I don't seem to see large flocks like we had twenty odd years ago.
    All the best, Sandy. Thanks for taking us along. ;o)

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  5 років тому +1

      I had an A303 Beretta many years ago. It was a 5 shot before they changed the law. Then I had a Hatsan escort 3 shot in more recent years and a Baikal mp153 semi auto. The baikal kept jamming, the hatsan shot a foot low and the Beretta was just perfect. Oh I had a remington 1100 skeet for a few days on trial also but it was quite heavily worn so didn't keep that.

    • @sarkybugger5009
      @sarkybugger5009 5 років тому +2

      Mine was originally a four shot, but I had to get the magazine crimped and the gun re-proofed, thanks to a certain arsehole, who didn't even use a shotgun when he shot up Hungerford. Don't you just love knee-jerk laws? :o(
      The Beretta semi-autos are certainly lovely guns to shoot, and super reliable. Mine never missed a beat, and I put thousands of rounds through it. At least 50 clays a week, sometimes 100, plus whatever rough shooting I could squeeze in on my days off.
      Cheers, Sandy.

      @@sarkybugger5009 i know this is many years old anyway.... was shooting alot cheaper back in the day or am i missing something?? 100 clays a week, now costs nealy a pound per trigger pull, and with even rough pigion shooting hard to find anything south of 400 quid. Absoulutly love the art of hunting but just seems so expencive now. thanks

    • @sarkybugger5009
      @sarkybugger5009 Рік тому

      @@harryaxford530 Yeah, it was a cheap sport 30+ years ago when I was most active. Gamebore fibre wad shells were £2.50 a box. Our private members club charged another 10p per clay, but we had to set up the stands, and trap for ourselves.
      I never had to pay for any rough shoots. Local farmers were happy to have someone come and do their pest control for them. A bottle of scotch at Christmas was my thank you to them, along with as many rabbits or pigeons as they wanted for the pot.
      I guess times have moved on.

    Wonderful video, thank you!
    I have wonderful memories of my first shotgun, a single barrel 12 gauge, a Cooey. Simple but effective. Many ducks, geese and pheasant were harvested with that piece, along with a couple of deer as well.
    I’ve also been fond of single shot centerfires as well, muzzleloader too.
    A totally different pace and outlook really.

    Beautiful video, sir. I have one of these shotguns, that I bought a few yrs ago. I have harvested quite a few squirrel with it. Should be taking a deer with it, in the next week or so.

    Absolutely brilliant video Sandy, I really enjoyed this one! I cant agree more with your views on hunting and shooting and I've been telling people this for years, Id rather eat something I've shot than meat from a supermarket for all the reasons you touched on. I too have been a shooting and countryman my entire life and cull everything from Roe deer to rabbits which feeds my family and my racing whippet with good honest food and you know exactly where it comes from, nothing is wasted!!
    With regards to the Biakal we used to be told they were made from ex Russian tanks lol, they certainly are not a Purdy {which I could never afford nor could justify lol} but in my opinion are a good working tool and will last a lifetime if looked after. Thank you so much for sharing this one and wish you all the very best.

      Thanks Trevor, that was a wonderful comment to receive. It really is good healthy food. I shall cook the pigeom breasts and eat them like mini steaks. One of my favourite foods.

    My first ever Shotgun on my 17th birthday many moons ago. It's very strange iv owned 12 guage over and under, s, semi auto, my current gun is a Rossi single 20 bore. I love it so simple virtually nothing to go wrong. Mine was as new for £50 including bag and cleaning kit. I am currently use 28 gram fibre 6 shot by Gamebore I also have Eley VIP 30 gram fibre 5 shot. Both are more than adequate through the full choke out to 35 yards in my hands. Iv shot Hare, Woodpigeon, Crow, Rooks and Grey Squirell, s with it. Mine is an auto ejector hammer action with top press down lever. Best ever farm knock about gun iv had. I purchased an Allen 5 cartridge stock ammo holder too. Lovely video Sandy proper trip down memory lane. Take care all the best. Tony

      I will add the VIP 30 gram fibre 5 really do kick, the Gamebore are much smoother but both pattern well at 35 yards. I can only use fibre due to my land owners usage and rules but it's no problem. Regards Tony

      Many thanks Sandy a lovely balanced view of wild harvestable meat. The farmers will appreciate your efforts too so should the veggies. 4 adult woodpigeon can consume the same ammount of food in 24 hours as 1 sheep. Flock of 200 in your pea field equals major problem so well done. Regards Tony

    My first gun was a Baikal 12g sbs they are good, strong reliable guns even if they are looked down on by those with loads of dosh! I remember taking a friend to buy his first gun at a well known establisment near Tamworth, he saw a Baikal, enquired about the price and was told, they're cheap Russian guns, you don't really want one of them do you? To which I replied I have one and can miss with the Baikal equally as I can with my Midland. I shoot pigeon when I can and like you, only take enough for the pot, problem being where I live is that there is no land readily available as it's already spoken for. I enjoy all the vids you post please keep them coming

    I have that very same gun in 12 gauge. I had the barrel cut down to 18.6 inches (the legal minimun here in Canada) so it was more portable and manouvreable in the bush. It's a handy self-defence gun in bear and cougar country (with slugs and buckshot) here in the backwoods of the west coast of British Columbia, but it's also a handy survival or hunting gun. I have a chamber adapter for it that allows 20 gauge shells to be fired from it and I can even put a .410 adapter in the 20 gauge adapter to allow .410 bore shells to be fired from the 12 gauge barrel. They all pattern exactly yhe same in diameter, but the shot is simply less dense with the 20 gauge and more so yet with the .410. This allows me to take grouse with the .410 at short range (often as close as 20 feet up in the trees where a 12 gauge would vaporise them, but the .410 does the job nicely out of the 12 gauge barrel). At 25 yards, I'm still getting shot on a grouse-sized target with the .410 and at 35 - 40 yards the 12 gauge is still easilly getting shot onto the grouse-sized target. I also have a Baikal 20 gauge with a .22 rifled barrel over the top of 20 gauge barrel. Great combo gun. I had an 18-inch .30-30 cal rifled insert made for it in Alaska which allows it to be a 150 yard hunting gun. This is the most versatile gun I have. Baikal make good, simple guns. Thanks for the interesting video.

    Ahh Baikal ! Sandy Back in the 60's I used Baikal 12g cartridges in a single "Cooey" Cartridges were cardboard cases (waxed) and had a tendency to absorb moisture and swell, they were sold in boxes of ten and were cheap. I didn't use these cartridges in my other shotguns, mostly Eley. Had a nice Cooey 410 single too, also a Remington Wingmaster 12g five shot. a Savage 12g five shot. a Essex 12g side by side ejector, a Sportsman Fifteen .22 LR with tube mag, a Remington .22 LR/SR tube mag, and a 9mm smooth bore bolt action Garden Gun. All kept in the appropriate Police Certified Cabinet. All got rid of and Licences handed in 1997. Cheers Sandy.........Les

      You should have kept some of those guns Les. It's a pity you gave up. I remember the baikal cartridges too. They had shot of all different sizes in them and made a louder bang than most other cartridges:)

      Wiltshire Man: Sadly Sandy the Land owner/friend became ill & passed away & his Widow sold the Farm, then the adjoining Landowner sold up too. The new owners rented the land out to a group of so called "sportsmen" they eradicated most of what wildlife existed on the land, me & dad just gave up :( Those Baikal were pretty random in their loads ;) loud & dirty too, also tended to absorb moisture in the cardboard casing & so wouldn't fit the chamber.

    My first shotgun was an old side by side bikal I think I swapped it for a triumph tiger cub!!! Hi hi! I have an old Browning 325 at the moment, but it’s a heavy gun or I’m finding it getting heavier as I’m getting older! 32” barrels!Mainly clay shooting and the odd pigeon or rabbit for the pot! Maybe change it this year!? Another great video sandy thanks agn, 73 fer nw, John M0CDL..
