Was walking through Maxima the other day, and there was a Corona-related message in the speakers.. "in English?", "How nice, I can understand! Hol up.. I know that voice!"
Amazing coincidence: "ir" also means "to be" in Japanese. But only for humans, animals, and moving automobiles (actually "iru" but pronounced the same as "ir"). For everything else "to be" is "aru" But only for "existing" not like saying "I am fine" etc.... for which there is no verb at all! BTW thank you for always mixing in advanced expressions for basic lessons! Something for everybody!
Great video and song recommendation at the end! Did you ever think of sharing a spotify playlist of great Latvian songs? I believe listening to music in a foreign language helps a lot if you want to learn it. However, it is not always easy to find nice music :) And you seem to have great taste !
Hey girl ! Just wanted to drop a huge thank-you for all your hard work you have put in to make these videos happen! Me (Latvian) and my American partner have been following your content since the very first videos you have made , and it’s been amazing! ( my partner literally cannot await for Germanes new videos to come out every week ) We love the way you explain Latvian culture and language, in a way that my Latvian ass could never, haha. + my partner has been trying to learn Latvian , but there really ain’t much learning materials online for English speakers, so we really appreciate your channel!! You are amazing and keep up the good work ! Happy holidays , from Taiwan
Liels, liels paldies for your kind comment! I am extremy happy and inspired when I receive such positive feedback :))) Happy holidays to you guys as well! :))
It’s simple! Tu - you (the mortal being in front of me, My friend) jūs - you (two or more mortal beings in front of me) Jūs - you (my boss, teacher, your Royal Highness)
What is the difference between es esmu and man ir ? Its correct to use only esmu for i am or allways use es esmu? and when it´s man ir?? Lovley Language but hard to learn. Great Videos!
Heh, yeah it’s a tough one. Basically - es esmu means I am. And man ir means I have. Es esmu Anete - I’m Anete Man ir kaķis - I have a cat There are of course nuances... :)
An example on an interesting nuance: Es esmu auksts/auksta (m/f form respectively) - literally would translate to "I am cold", but in this case it speaks more about a personal quality. As in, you're a cold (and unfeeling) person. Man ir auksti - literally "I have cold" (or even 'coldly' since the -i ending to 'auksts' makes it an adverb), which sounds odd, but properly translates to "I am cold", as in you want a blanket and tea because you spent too much time outside or left the window open. Typically, 'es esmu' + adjective is used for describing an attribute of the person you're talking about, in this case 'es' or 'I', but can be used with any pronoun. ('tu esi', 'viņš ir', etc.) 'Man ir' (or 'tev ir', 'viņam ir') (which uses the possessive form of the pronoun) is obviously usually used for possession, however 'man ir' + adverb can also describe an attribute (in this case mostly feelings caused by senses, like cold, heat, fear etc.) of the person in question, and the adverb is treated like and has the same contextual meaning as the corresponding adjective.
Arrived in Riga from France just last week to spend a semester studying abroad at RTU, and it seems our online Latvian lessons are in a bit of an unsure situation for some reason. Would someone happen to know of any resources of the "hard" way to Latvian ? As in, flat-out grammar sheets with examples and stuff, I sadly don't really have time to watch a lot of different videos and glean information from various sources very inefficiently... Thanks in advance!
Loti forši video ! Pat manai Latgales šievei Patika 😃 After 3 years in Latvia i felt stuck - your video help loads - do you give private classes in Rigaaaaa ?
