  • This bird was sitting on our patio and did not fly away as I approached. I thought it was injured or stressed from a possible hawk attack, so I reached down to pick it up. To my surprise, it finger-mounted like a hand-fed pet.
    I kept it overnight and released it the following morning, strong and healthy.

    I found a baby bird in the road hopping up and down in a circle because the asphalt was burning it’s feet. There were no trees, nests or adults so I took him home. He was so young he had no feathers on 40% of his body. Feeding him was a real challenge but I managed to keep him alive. Later I taught him how to find crickets and insects before releasing him. But he kept coming back and so we let him live in our sunroom. He had a huge cage but the doors were kept open so he could fly all around the room. He actually housebroke himself as he would fly into the cage to relieve himself. Very intelligent he could solve puzzles. Loved company and flew to anybody coming to visit him. He grew into a beautiful red male. Unfortunately somebody reported me and he was confiscated and released again in the middle of winter. Hours later the head of the State Wildlife Commission called me to apologize. He was wonderful.

They are my favorites, bc they wait patiently in the bamboo on the side of my yard (I'm in SE Pennsylvania) and chirp until they get their seed. I own a tree removal company, and I hate that what I do sometimes destroys a nest or roost, but me and my employees are pros at moving and zip-tying nests to the closest safe place, and watch as the mother returns and approves, and if we cannot do anything (bc you can only move a nest 15-20 feet away or they may not find it) we run the babies up to the wild animal rescue in Chalfont...

I like them a lot and what you did was very good. Our entire HOA is a bird sanctuary, so we see blue jays, cardinals, hawks, crows, etc - every bird from the smallest to the largest that are native here in Florida. I especially love cardinals. Some say that this was a hand-raised bird, but it looks like it was a very young male, who probably ate the seed you put out for them. We often see mated birds, and r he cardinals are the sweetest ❤. The male and female fly over to where I threw out seed, andthe male will feed the female, even though she has seed right under her. I've also seen the fathers feed their males and female babies. We have a sun conure, and the couple flies over very close to take a better look at our red bird. They're very intelligent and sweet birds.

      Joe Hall he might be! I’ve been feeding the same cardinal for 3 years. I love that little fella, if anything happened to him I would do the same and bring him in to recover. But it’s been the same male cardinal every day at my feeder, I can’t tell for certain if his mate has been the same for three years (I know they mate for life but that isn’t always the case, plus, if a mate dies for instance they’ll of course get a new one.) so I don’t know if she is the same, but the male without a doubt is the same one.

  • @marcusengland1481
    @marcusengland1481 9 років тому +69

    I've raised many cardinals. My oldest lived to 10 years old just a week ago. You have a hand raised cardinal which someone has raised from a baby. These are the only cardinals which are finger tamed unless trained by a professional. I can tell you what happened. Something happened to the owner and someone else who thought they know what's better for the bird released it outside. This bird has no skills in knowing what is harmful, how to forage, what predators to fear, etc. Hand raised birds are not safe or happy outside and don't live long. Release for them is a death sentence. They will seek out another home to take them in. I hope you keep the bird and do not advertise to anyone that you have it because everyone seems to think they know better & will try to give you bad advice. They don't know better. The bird is clearly seeking a home and doesn't understand why it was thrown outside. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You must remind it of its owner. They do not know how to fend for themselves out in the wild and are set in their ways and do not relearn. Cardinals are very ritualistic. Hand raised birds are only happiest with humans because they have bonded with them. Feed them seeds, sunflower, safflower, shelled raw peanuts and parrot mixes, mixed seeds from pet stores with vitamins, yellow or red apples, cherries & grapes & tangerines. Romaine lettuce. Millet sprays. Calcium grit.
    NO SEEDS in any fruit. NO avocado. These are poison. Remove ALL fruit seeds.
    Babies are fed LeFebers baby bird food. It is a yellow powder in a blue and white container at Petsmart and apples. They need to see outside but no direct sunlight which would over heat them. A large water dish for daily bathing. They will bathe 7 times in a row. Pencil sized perches from the smooth manzanita at pet shops... They also like Barbie toys, real gold rings but nothing to catch in their claws. Claws need occasional clipping on tips to prevent growing in a circle. Not too deep. Just the tips. They like to have a nest dish to stash interesting things they find in their seed. Don't let them eat newspaper. Use the soft Viva paper towels in the bottom of the cage to keep them from eating it. Once they have bonded with a human they have no interest in other birds or even females. Their color will get duller from not being in the sun. This is normal and ok. They are loving, loyal pets and can be taught whistles. They also like to cuddle on the neck of the owner to get warm and will nap for long times. They are very loyal and loving and a tame bird will die outside which is why it is looking for a home to take it in. Would you want to be thrown outside after being raised in a warm home and expected to fend out in the wild and unfamiliar without any learned defenses? The other male cardinals will attack and drive it off. They all stake out territories. Hawks will kill them. Red cardinals are easy targets for cats, hawks & any predator due to their colors. They don't have a chance unless raised in the wild. This bird was raised by a human as a baby. I have had a lot of cardinals. Those are the ONLY ones who are finger tame. These birds consider a house & human to be their territory and home.
    And for the brilliant commenter below.... Cardinals have short wings. The birds wings are NOT clipped. If you knew anything about them you would know this. They only fly short distances and spend most of the time perching or hopping. They don't like to fly much & are territorial which is why they don't migrate.

    I think his song was directed at the bird in the mirror. During mating season they will try to fight with their own reflections thinking it's a competitor - I dont know what time of year you had him, but he was not aggressive at all. Probably calling to find his family! I love cardinals, the female in my yard finally showed up at the feeder in late september. Befire that she was busy caring for the young ones, and she was bit shy! The male and female had two babies, now grown juveniles - another male and female. The beak turns orange when they are old enough to mate. I was thrilled to see the father bring the fledglings to the feeder to show them where and what to eat - he even fed them at first. That was earlier this summer. Now they are all the same size and keep close to each other as a family unit. These lovely birds fascinate me! Lucky you! Thanks for sharing this with us! Glad you filmed him singing!

      @@joehall94 absolutely! Awesome that you had this beautiful visitor! I had a bit of a miracle this summer - I was heartbroken because all the house finches and purple finches were finally back and getting gorgeous color - but they were all getting sick. I had to halt my backyard feeder operation to disperse the birds a bit to mitigate spread of air sac mites and conjunctivitis (only finches get these diseases). It makes them lethargic, blind and then it kills them. Sick finches were just disappearing! That is until I realized a hawk had been catching them and dining on them. I was sad, but they would have died anyway. I mentally asked the hawk for one of his feathers since i fed the birds that he now feeds on. I never saw a hawk feather a anywhere let alone a cardinal feather. A week later, I got home and stepped out of my car and there at my feet was a hawk feather. I verified it online- it was indeed a 10 inch primary wing feather! This is the time of year the birds molt to grow new feathers. I gave thanks to the hawk for the feather and for solving the sick finch problem. The only thing was I had to return the feather to the winds because it is illegal to pick up a wild bird feather off the ground and keep it. Look up why on google, it makes sense in a weird way. Birds went extinct in the early part of the last century be cause they were hunted for the feathers to use in fashion. The feathers brought a great deal of money, till they stopped it. Nowadays you can be fined or imprisoned for keeping a feather because they have no way of knowing if the bird was killed for the feather or what. Only Native Americans are allowed to have feathers for religious reasons and those feathers need to be registered with the government. Only indigenous wild bird feathers are illegal to have, the feathers of invasive or legally hunted birds are allowed - like turkeys or old world house sparrows. But at least I have a photo of this beautiful gift! Birds are a miracle, a beautiful miracle that most of us take for granted. Covid kept me in my backyard this year, and because of it I got to know all the feathered people in my yard! Now I stop, look and listen when I hear a blue jay or a crow or see a flash of red!

    I found a baby Cardinal hopping around in the middle of the road. There was no place to leave him so I reluctantly brought him home where I expected him to die within 2 days. However feeding him cat food I got him through. Then taught him to hunt, catch and eat crickets and worms. Finally I released him. In fact I released him about a dozen times but he keeps coming back. One of his “fans” gave him a huge flight cage which is in our sunroom. In the mornings I open the cage and he flies around to stretch his wings. I sit at the couch and he sits on my knee and takes wax worms from my hand. He loves ice chips and I give him a cupful. He “steals” them and carries them away to eat.

      chip5256, that was a good story. They are beautiful birds and would probably be as easy to train as a cockatiel, but like you, I think they are most beautiful in the wild enjoying their freedom.

      Just routine here, jgk381.
      Two weeks ago, we went to the lake for a couple hours, when we returned a doe that has played with our Great Dane for the past two years, gave birth to a fawn in our front yard.
      We let them rest overnight and opened the gate so the doe could take her fawn to the woods.
      last week, she brought him back. This time, I opened the gate to our small pasture and herded the fawn in there so it would be safe for a couple more weeks when it will be able to jump the fence and flee predators. Go to my FB page for pics and videos of this doe and others.
