    Excellent! One question Sir ----In Water molecule, lone pairs of oxygen atom are shown to create repulsion, thereby affecting overall shape of the molecule. In BeCl2, 1 atom of each chlorine bonds with Be. What happens to the rest of the 6 lone electrons? Why are they not shown to be affecting the molecular shape like how it happened in water molecule? Can you pls help me understand this?

      Good question. Yes they repel each other. But already the molecule is linear and the bond angle is maximum (180 degrees). If the bond angle goes up from 180 degrees from one side so that the chlorine atoms go away from each other, then from the other side the bond angle goes down and the chlorine atoms come closer from that side. I think you got it.

      one s orbital mix with one p orbital by giving two sp orbitals. The number of hybrid orbitals is equal to the number of pure atomic orbitals undergoing mixing process.

    sir Pz orbital of Chlorine can overlap overlap along z axis only with sp hybrid orbital or it can overlap along any axis with sp hybrid orbitals

      Good question. It is for our convenience we coined them x y and z. For example, x axis for one atom may be z for other atom. It can be any axis provided the overlapping is maximum.

    Hey sir but I have a confusion that Be will have 4 electrons then it's octet is not complete?why the chlorines are not sharing electrons with the Be then to complete the octet????

      In most of the atoms, octet is to be achieved to get more stability. It is an observation. However, there are exceptions to this and one such is beryllium.

      Logic is very simple, one s orbital and one p orbital are intermixed. Each contributing equally. That means 1:1 or 50% s character and 50%. p-character.

    But why is this compound considered covalent? Be is a metal and cl is a nonmetal

      Be is smaller in size when compared to other alkaline earth metals. The electronegativity difference between chlorine and beryllium is 3.0-1.5=1.5. hene it is polar covalent. Recall that if the difference is less than 1.7 then the bond will have more covalent nature

    Thanks for this sp hybridization. pz orbital of 1 Cl atom overlaps with 1 sp hybrid orbital to form sigma bond. My question is why positive lobe of Cl atom and Be atom are overlapped to form sigma bond? Also what's about negative lobe? Why the size of negative lobe is very small compared to positive lobe of the sp hybrid orbital?

      Good question. The answer might lie in the mathematical approach that was adopted in developing valence bond theory. Otherwise, you may take bigger one negative and smaller one positive. It is our choice.

      The aim and object of formation of chemical bond is to get lowest energy as much as possible. hence electrons participating in the bond formation should reside in the orbitals that are associated with lower energy. The inner orbitals are closer to the nucleus and are more attracted... too
