The difference is that those artists or even their management don’t go around saying “pls translate our contents for free”, the fans do it out of love and support. Unlike the case of Taeri here where she explicitly asked for basically a “free service” from her fans when she already should have the resources and the team to do that for her content. Being a translator is NOT an easy job. It’s like when an artist ask a certain person or a fan to draw them and the artist just offers them a “shoutout” in return instead of paying them.

I’ve seen a lot of different UA-camrs of different backgrounds do that. Some fans are willing to translate for free and a lot of times the UA-camrs give them a shoutout at the end of their videos/in their community post.
ikr, I don't really get the backlash. This kind of thing is normal for a long time now. What i love about this "talent donation" is usually the content creator will open for everyone to freely translate the video, thanks to this, not only English caption but other language caption also available.
Two potential problems with this, even if it's pretty much accepted behavior in some online spaces, regardless of the target language involved (English, French, Spanish...): 1/Having just anyone volunteering to translate content means the level of accuracy will vary from 1>100 (100 being very accurate translations) as just being fluent in more languages than just one does not a translator make. It's a profession for a reason. There are technical skills you need to acquire, it's not just about talent. 2/In the case of videos, two services are needed: translation +subtitling. A niche specialty some professional translators are really good at. She has the money to hire these professionals. Her UA-cam is part of her brand so it's directly or indirectly bringing her income. She's just exploiting her fans when she really shouldn't.

It feels like it was for the longest time until UA-cam changed a policy a while back and then some channels found it easier to pay for translations, but I think it’s still done for non-company owed channels.

Some people translate for free as a hobby. It just depends on the person and their situation. If people who want to be paid for translating videos, they will definitely find other jobs, they wouldn't be taking on Kim Tae Ri's request and move on. She only asked for people who would like to do it for free. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking those who would like to translate for free to do it. There are lots of people who enjoy translating as a hobby and do it for free. By saying that you are disregarding the human capacity to do something nice for others without needing anything in return.

When famous people or big companies exploit people or smaller creators using their fame to get them to do something for free. That's why I was worried at first because I didn't know what type of situation it was. sm used to do this and it was horrible some people started putting the wrong translations on purpose for fun and accidentally made scandals so sm Finallu stopped it and hired official translators which they should have had from the beginning

Agreed. I think if a fan willingly on their own translates content and posts it because THEY WANT TO then it’s fine. I think demanding people to do something that someone could be getting paid for could be seen as something negative (obviously in this case she asked nicely and wasn’t demanding so it’s fine). Once it becomes normal for people to start to do work for free in the career you’re in, it affects everyone with that job title. For example, photographers deal with a lot of issues where clients will belittle them and feel justified in asking for the photographer to do their work for free/for a shoutout/etc. and it’s even to the point where people who are not famous also feel entitled to get photographers to do free work. I believe people should be paid for the work they do in general, it doesn’t even have to be a lot of money. Plus I think I general it’s best to stick to doing things professionally and not in an “under the table” type of way that could cause you problems in the future. Making sure you hire someone and making sure they’re doing their job at a professional and business level is the best outcome in my opinion. Like others are saying, you not only risk having something translated incorrectly (and at worst it’s a bad translation that people may find insulting/offensive), but because you gave them permission your name is now tied to this whole situation. It just feels like hiring translators is the safest and probably most beneficial route to take. They will be the team who will translate your content as content is created, make clean translations, will help you get a wider range of fans/supporters, etc., and communicate with those fans. I don’t think asking your fans to make translations themselves is wrong or awful or anything. I just worry it might not be the best solution, but as long as everyone in question is fine with it (the fan who’s translating and the person making the content) then it should be fine.

as a fan myself, I would also do it for free if I could. It would only give me experience and further my abilities in language, but it would also make me happy that I’m providing something to the team (especially if I don’t have the money to buy albums etc)
There's a UA-cam channel I follow of a Korean women/mom who does like cooking videos and life style vids. She has them translate to English and I am pretty sure all of them were done by fans for free. Heck I would do it if I could speak and read Korean. It's helpful to the UA-camrs who don't fully have the time to translate it themselves if they know the other languages

community subtitle is very common in youtube and while fans do it for free, sometimes they leave their signature (in case someone want to contact them for translating job) it's a win-win

I honestly agree especially since we’re not just talking about one language and the fact that even if some countries use the same language they use different grammar or words for things. A great example of this is America and the UK.

No problem here, I help with subbing dramas (only the ones I like lol) all the time for free. Hell if she gave me a shout out that'd be more than enough payment for me to sub her vids. Besides it's great practice, gotta keep up with the new slang and pop culture references.

It's really not that big a deal, as someone who has translated and subtitled for big UA-camrs for free there are a bunch of us who are always ready to do it for them. I find it enjoyable and I love making things more accessible to others. It's totally a valid request
I think it's not something worth getting major backlash over, but at the same time translating is not an easy job and takes a lot of time and patience, so I personally wouldn't ask anyone to do it for free. Also I'm guessing a lot of people will still go for it maybe with hopes to get to meet taeri.
Exactly. Basically, it should be the company's responsibility to get the translator and if she is asking this, then the company is not doing a good job in this. Also, people are making it a huge thing as if she embezzle someone's money. Since they cannot find dirt on Kim taeri easily, some people saw it as an opportunity to make it a big thing. idk just cuz shes an actress doesnt mean she's necessarily "rich", i mean she's probably doing well but its fully possible that it's legitimately not worth it for her to pay probably multiple pros to translate her youtube videos into multiple languages. she may have just decided that if no one wants to do it for free then her vids just wont get subtitles. its likely shes making little to no money off that youtube channel so it probably wouldn't make much sense to invest money into it.
UA-cam used to have a "community captions" option where people could freely, easily and voluntarily provide translated captions for any youtube video. In my opinion it was a really good feature and I used it to translate some videos into spanish. But ofc youtube, about 3-4 years ago, removed a good feature 🤡 On this case, I think that she has no obligation to add translated captions on her videos because she's a korean channel doing content in korean and thats it. Her target audience is korean. But also, I don't think it's very nice to ask the fans to do it for free. She could either say: 1) Adding subtitles in other languages is a big investment to do now, but I eill consider it in the future 2) Our team has contacted translators and we'll be having subtitles in X language(s) from now on As some other people said, she technically is rich (we dont know her personally. but usually celebrities this big do have money lol) so I think even adding captions in english would make a lot of viewers happy.
Back in the days UA-cam had a feature that let you do just that and nobody payed translators. Bilingual fans worked for free, their only gratification was seeing their name in thank you comments and knowing they participated in the growth of their idol's channel. It was literally like fansubbers in the anime community, but legal. Why is it suddently a problem ?
Since beginning of Hallyu, everything started by fans who volunteer to translate everything that idols, actors, celebrity said to english and every language fans use. It's not big problem at all. Kim Taeri has done most of the English subtitles herself to accurately show her thoughts. Of course she could've paid a professional translator, but they wouldn't have been able to capture her unique voice and personality, so she wasn't trying to be cheap. Even if she did pay for professional translations of several languages, I'm sure that people would complain that their language wasn't included, so she can't win whatever she does. She asked for VOLUNTEERS as a fun collaboration project for her fans, so that as many languages as possible could be added. Her fans understood the brief and were excited about it. Kim Taeri posted for volunteers with good intentions and this is a case of people criticizing her without knowing the full story. I fully support Kim Taeri ❤️
Then our army translator should be paid on daily basis. I have never seen anyone this much dedicated to boys and us too. If some of them need help, they just simply tell and I can say we all jump to help. Some of them have real job and they just do translation out of love. For bangtan TV translations, we had to wait till 2020. Truly armys are the best fans. And yes, it really really hard to translate. Translators are genius actually.
If they’re willing to translate for free, that’s on them. There’s no exploitation. That being said, I like when UA-camrs are willing to go the extra step to be thankful and write in the translations and/or descriptions that X person did the translations. That could be great resume building for becoming a translator!

Coming from someone who translates videos. I translate vlogs from a less famous channel into German and it is a really fun hobby. But you cannot ask your fans to do that for free if you know you have the money. It is a lot of hard work to translate videos and it needs to be paid, otherwise people won't do it and you'll end up with inconsistent translations. I for myself do it for free but only because the videos I translate aren't upoaded that often. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't have enough time for other things in life. Just go and get a good translator for consistency and pay them.

Community-submitted translation subtitles were a standard feature on UA-cam only a couple years ago and UA-cam removed it for whatever reason. So honestly, I don't see the issue. It's not like she's profiting off her videos anyway, seems like she's doing it just for fun.
To be fair, paying to translate UA-cam videos is usually cost prohibitive. It's often easier crowdsource it. Kim Taeri might be a wealthier actress, but subbing her videos professionally would probably result in her losing money on UA-cam.

She&her team already did the Eng subs. She just wanted to include/cater others as well, who are not Korean or English speakers. She was being considerate and obviously, she wanted to interact with her intl fans more...collaborate with them. there is no backlash when fans translate for their artists all the time. Fans who know both languages take the time and energy to translate for us for free. there is no backlash for an artist asking her fans who are able to translate to translate.

I think translating her videos, her agency doing it is the least she can do. No one is asking for interviews, posts, interactions etc in English, only her yt videos that can be released whenever. She can do what many Korean channels do: release the video first and a day or two after add English translation. I translate some stuff in my spare time and let me tell you, it’s more difficult than it seems, diction, tone and expressions must be translated correctly in order to give the person speaking justice of their words. So to summarize, no I think it’s not ok asking people to do it for free. Edit: i didn’t mean that she would translate it herself, she literally has an agency😂 I understand that there are different cultures and living situations and that money is treated differently for some, but personally I think that if you do something for others you would like to be praised for it regardless if it’s a hobby or not. Sometimes money is the kindness that people need and I still think asking people to do it for free is a joke, hobby or not.
Especially since Korean to English translation is hard. There are some words that can’t be translated in English. A single word can be pronounced/verbalized differently giving it a range of severity/harshness that can’t be translated into english. Sometimes it’s a tonal swing or dip in the voice/pronunciation that carries the inflection. Don’t even get me started on the many honorifics.

There was a community subtitle post on UA-cam before it was removed. Basically anyone can submit their translation for free and needs a confirmation from the channel to publish them.
Fan translations are often better than the official ones. Because it's a labor of love for them. It's only a problem if someone tries to monetize their work afterwards.

Although we can't blame her, if she cares about and loves her fans, her staff can do the same. There are a number of actors on UA-cam, and because of their popularity overseas, they provide captions for several languages. Ji Chang Wook's videos on UA-cam have subtitles in almost all Asian languages, including English,Spanish and even in french.but she is not wrong.
Ordinary fans and viewers used to add translations before youtube removed the option. The actors are not obligated to add captions. It's their channel, their choices. Most content is translated by fans, be it news, dramas, movies, videos... So why not y'all pay those individuals for the subs instead?

As an actual professional linguist, HELL NO. even much smaller UA-cam channel has quality close caption that you could tell done by human. I mean sure, her fans can do it, especially those who has an interest in the craft, as practice, but ultimately the quality of the translation can be hugely compromised. And it’s an whole other thing if she decides to credit those who volunteered. Community contributed translation is a thing, yes. But this move can also be deemed as an indicator that she doesn’t care about her international fans (in terms of the quality of content they get to consume) and considering how big she is, that’s just kinda cheap of her agency.

Like one bad situation could be that someone mistranslates something and it’s offensive/insulting to people and now because she gave them permission and is tying her name to that fan translator, it’s become a sticky situation…. Best solution in my opinion is to hire professionals who will do the translations cleanly, on time with when content comes out, etc. I think it could be beneficial to her career seeing as there will be better communication between her and international fans and maybe even give her more fame internationally (which could give her more job opportunities in other countries (like being a model for a magazine overseas, etc.)) and international fans will feel acknowledged and cared about.
Did you forget this is her own UA-cam channel and not her shows? She does this on her free time, not through work. People demand something that isn't meant for them. Would you want people to start yelling at you to share your house with the homeless?

I feel like people were more offended by her not asking fans to translate at their own pace or time but the fact that she wrote paragraphs and made a google docs questionnaire that had many questions like “what language the speak” and “how many hours they can put in translating” I remember how she wrote it’ll take 6+ hours to translate (since her videos are long) and how she was picking and choosing fans like an interview to be sent to her or her management and then chosen. Her post felt like a job interview post without pay and if she went along with with it it would have been a commitment to whoever was chosen since she was asking for people to translate for hours out of their free time. And she sounded like she was looking for committed people and had demands that were not easy since people have lives. which was probably why many ppl especially Korean netizens were really offended by her behavior also probably bc of how much Koreans in general are overworked and I remember how there was an increase in work hours for Koreans. So it was just bad timing and her way of going around things came off as offensive to some. Many are mentioning how fans already translate for their favs but people need to understand they do it at their own pace on their free time plus I’m sure there are videos of hers on social media that were probably translated by fans but her way of asking was frowned upon. Like many said her fans wanted to translate for her but nothing she could have said would help her since Koreans would’ve have been mad either way. tbh It’s an unfortunate situation really. In many ways I feel like she was a scapegoat for the situation going on in Korea with overwork and hours being added for work and her saying that just added salt to people’s wound. International fans probably weren’t offended frankly I wasn’t either but to Koreans it was a big deal since they are so work driven but I guess they found their punching bag they can bully online since they can’t fight against the situation going on in their country.

Translating is a real job that people get paid to do. It’s not as simple as just feeding a script into google translate, but selecting the right words for the given context, finding the next best phrases for words with no direct translation, etc. A lot of ppl subtitle and translate media for free and sometimes that’s fine. But considering that Kim Tae Ri is a pretty successful actress I think the better response would be “I’ll have my team get on that” as opposed to “why don’t you guys do it?” I’m sure she was well intentioned and I like her work as well, but I can understand why fans are upset. Like just because a fan is bilingual doesn’t mean the responsibility to translate content for the rest of the fandom should fall on their shoulders.
I am pretty sure a lot of people would be glad to do this. Just for the sake of other people. I mean, people have been fan translating books into languages where they are not officially published, and sharing that with other fans who don’t know the language… just because they are fans.
I think that's really common, but most youtubers I've seen who do it call it "volunteer translating" and they'll put together the teams themselves. But there are application processes, etc.

If it wasn't for the free translators I would have never found BTS back in 2016. I think their Korean speaking fans literally made it possible for us to connect with them and in turn, are a big part of why they became successful
I'm always really grateful when the artists I stan put up subtitles. I don't know how much it costs them but some of them are indie labels. Maybe they see the value of giving international fans reasons to stick around

You can't just pay people, especially internationally. There are labor and commerce laws. Having good community translations is often better quality than a professional translator who might not get the message and feeling across
Okay, so this is something that used to happen to only really popular UA-camrs back in the day, but community members could translate other people’s content. And even some kpop videos. One example is Shine by Pentagon, a lot of those subtitles are from fans. Maybe it’s just an old thing and since 2018 UA-camrs just get real translators, but people have been translating for free.-I’m guessing a lot of people don’t know this who haven’t been on UA-cam and bored enough to look at the captions menu. But it used to say something about the channel that translated the video in a language basically giving credit to them.

The difference is that those artists or even their management don’t go around saying “pls translate our contents for free”, the fans do it out of love and support. Unlike the case of Taeri here where she explicitly asked for basically a “free service” from her fans when she already should have the resources and the team to do that for her content. Being a translator is NOT an easy job. It’s like when an artist ask a certain person or a fan to draw them and the artist just offers them a “shoutout” in return instead of paying them.

I’ve seen a lot of different UA-camrs of different backgrounds do that. Some fans are willing to translate for free and a lot of times the UA-camrs give them a shoutout at the end of their videos/in their community post.

ikr, I don't really get the backlash. This kind of thing is normal for a long time now. What i love about this "talent donation" is usually the content creator will open for everyone to freely translate the video, thanks to this, not only English caption but other language caption also available.
Two potential problems with this, even if it's pretty much accepted behavior in some online spaces, regardless of the target language involved (English, French, Spanish...):
1/Having just anyone volunteering to translate content means the level of accuracy will vary from 1>100 (100 being very accurate translations) as just being fluent in more languages than just one does not a translator make. It's a profession for a reason. There are technical skills you need to acquire, it's not just about talent.
2/In the case of videos, two services are needed: translation +subtitling. A niche specialty some professional translators are really good at. She has the money to hire these professionals. Her UA-cam is part of her brand so it's directly or indirectly bringing her income. She's just exploiting her fans when she really shouldn't.
oh yay, a shoutout in the community post is really going to pay someones bills. No, its exploitation, unfortunately. She has the money to pay people, UA-camrs often exploit their positions as people with lots of fans to get free work out of them. its not ok!

It feels like it was for the longest time until UA-cam changed a policy a while back and then some channels found it easier to pay for translations, but I think it’s still done for non-company owed channels.

Some people translate for free as a hobby. It just depends on the person and their situation. If people who want to be paid for translating videos, they will definitely find other jobs, they wouldn't be taking on Kim Tae Ri's request and move on. She only asked for people who would like to do it for free. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking those who would like to translate for free to do it. There are lots of people who enjoy translating as a hobby and do it for free. By saying that you are disregarding the human capacity to do something nice for others without needing anything in return.

sm used to do this and it was horrible some people started putting the wrong translations on purpose for fun and accidentally made scandals so sm Finallu stopped it and hired official translators which they should have had from the beginning
this is exactly what I think will happen here as well. People will translate things wrong, maybe on purpose maybe not, but it could cause many scandals and could pose a big issue so I don't think it's a good idea.
Agreed. I think if a fan willingly on their own translates content and posts it because THEY WANT TO then it’s fine. I think demanding people to do something that someone could be getting paid for could be seen as something negative (obviously in this case she asked nicely and wasn’t demanding so it’s fine). Once it becomes normal for people to start to do work for free in the career you’re in, it affects everyone with that job title. For example, photographers deal with a lot of issues where clients will belittle them and feel justified in asking for the photographer to do their work for free/for a shoutout/etc. and it’s even to the point where people who are not famous also feel entitled to get photographers to do free work. I believe people should be paid for the work they do in general, it doesn’t even have to be a lot of money.
Plus I think I general it’s best to stick to doing things professionally and not in an “under the table” type of way that could cause you problems in the future. Making sure you hire someone and making sure they’re doing their job at a professional and business level is the best outcome in my opinion. Like others are saying, you not only risk having something translated incorrectly (and at worst it’s a bad translation that people may find insulting/offensive), but because you gave them permission your name is now tied to this whole situation. It just feels like hiring translators is the safest and probably most beneficial route to take. They will be the team who will translate your content as content is created, make clean translations, will help you get a wider range of fans/supporters, etc., and communicate with those fans.
I don’t think asking your fans to make translations themselves is wrong or awful or anything. I just worry it might not be the best solution, but as long as everyone in question is fine with it (the fan who’s translating and the person making the content) then it should be fine.
I remembered when Baekhyun had to apologize when he was misunderstood and hated coz of an army who purposely mistranslated his words. The depressed girl he was talking to and giving advice to even had to apologize coz she thought it's her fault. Vile people

There's a UA-cam channel I follow of a Korean women/mom who does like cooking videos and life style vids. She has them translate to English and I am pretty sure all of them were done by fans for free. Heck I would do it if I could speak and read Korean. It's helpful to the UA-camrs who don't fully have the time to translate it themselves if they know the other languages

community subtitle is very common in youtube and while fans do it for free, sometimes they leave their signature (in case someone want to contact them for translating job) it's a win-win

Helped sub some of Ha Ji-won's movies back in the day before asian dramas got popular here (nothing was subbed) and then on dramafever for a while, but these days things are pretty much covered by the professionals lol

It's really not that big a deal, as someone who has translated and subtitled for big UA-camrs for free there are a bunch of us who are always ready to do it for them. I find it enjoyable and I love making things more accessible to others. It's totally a valid request

I think it's not something worth getting major backlash over, but at the same time translating is not an easy job and takes a lot of time and patience, so I personally wouldn't ask anyone to do it for free. Exactly. Basically, it should be the company's responsibility to get the translator and if she is asking this, then the company is not doing a good job in this. Also, people are making it a huge thing as if she embezzle someone's money. Since they cannot find dirt on Kim taeri easily, some people saw it as an opportunity to make it a big thing. Like yeah, it was not entirely right for her to do that but it wasn't something to be stretched this much when the company and she apologized already.
She has a lot of fans who are willing to do it for free. Some of those vlogs even have translations on the comments made by fans.

idk just cuz shes an actress doesnt mean she's necessarily "rich", i mean she's probably doing well but its fully possible that it's legitimately not worth it for her to pay probably multiple pros to translate her youtube videos into multiple languages. she may have just decided that if no one wants to do it for free then her vids just wont get subtitles. its likely shes making little to no money off that youtube channel so it probably wouldn't make much sense to invest money into it.
UA-cam used to have a "community captions" option where people could freely, easily and voluntarily provide translated captions for any youtube video. In my opinion it was a really good feature and I used it to translate some videos into spanish. But ofc youtube, about 3-4 years ago, removed a good feature 🤡
On this case, I think that she has no obligation to add translated captions on her videos because she's a korean channel doing content in korean and thats it. Her target audience is korean. But also, I don't think it's very nice to ask the fans to do it for free. She could either say: 1) Adding subtitles in other languages is a big investment to do now, but I eill consider it in the future 2) Our team has contacted translators and we'll be having subtitles in X language(s) from now on

Back in the days UA-cam had a feature that let you do just that and nobody payed translators. Bilingual fans worked for free, their only gratification was seeing their name in thank you comments and knowing they participated in the growth of their idol's channel. It was literally like fansubbers in the anime community, but legal. Why is it suddently a problem ?

Since beginning of Hallyu, everything started by fans who volunteer to translate everything that idols, actors, celebrity said to english and every language fans use. It's not big problem at all. I am also one of those fans. If KimTaeri fans can translate what she said.. They help her to promote herself also... It should do as fans!! It's fandom activities!!
Kim Taeri has done most of the English subtitles herself to accurately show her thoughts. Of course she could've paid a professional translator, but they wouldn't have been able to capture her unique voice and personality, so she wasn't trying to be cheap. Even if she did pay for professional translations of several languages, I'm sure that people would complain that their language wasn't included, so she can't win whatever she does. She asked for VOLUNTEERS as a fun collaboration project for her fans, so that as many languages as possible could be added. Her fans understood the brief and were excited about it. Kim Taeri posted for volunteers with good intentions and this is a case of people criticizing her without knowing the full story. I fully support Kim Taeri ❤️
Then our army translator should be paid on daily basis. I have never seen anyone this much dedicated to boys and us too. If some of them need help, they just simply tell and I can say we all jump to help. Some of them have real job and they just do translation out of love. For bangtan TV translations, we had to wait till 2020. Truly armys are the best fans. And yes, it really really hard to translate. Translators are genius actually.

If they’re willing to translate for free, that’s on them. There’s no exploitation. That being said, I like when UA-camrs are willing to go the extra step to be thankful and write in the translations and/or descriptions that X person did the translations. That could be great resume building for becoming a translator!

Second, exploitation is explicitly taking advantage of something or someone with bad intent. She isn’t badly intended nor is she forcing them to do it. She is saying “go ahead and do it if you want” basically. There is no pressure to do it at all. If they choose to and are asking to, she’s not exploiting them.

Coming from someone who translates videos.
I translate vlogs from a less famous channel into German and it is a really fun hobby. But you cannot ask your fans to do that for free if you know you have the money. It is a lot of hard work to translate videos and it needs to be paid, otherwise people won't do it and you'll end up with inconsistent translations.
I for myself do it for free but only because the videos I translate aren't upoaded that often. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't have enough time for other things in life.
Just go and get a good translator for consistency and pay them.
I know so many channels that do it for free..BTS army has tons of twitter pages and youtube channels that do it for free..it is all out of love I believe!That too into multiple languages like Spanish, Japanese, Indonesian,Filipino,Thai along english!!
@@Pooja_R_Anand i think the difference is bts army translators volunteered and bh is getting lot of flack for not translating themselves and giving the fans a break - it's a lot of time and energy/burden they can take off of fans back. If Kim Taeri felt the need to make an announcement then she should offer to pay.

Community-submitted translation subtitles were a standard feature on UA-cam only a couple years ago and UA-cam removed it for whatever reason. So honestly, I don't see the issue. It's not like she's profiting off her videos anyway, seems like she's doing it just for fun.

To be fair, paying to translate UA-cam videos is usually cost prohibitive. It's often easier crowdsource it. Kim Taeri might be a wealthier actress, but subbing her videos professionally would probably result in her losing money on UA-cam.
the ones that want translations are the fans, so she doesnt have to go above and beyond to hire a translator with her own pocket money just for her fans' comfortability (if you get what i mean) if her fans want translations, theyre gonna have to work for it, she doesnt owe her fans anything

She&her team already did the Eng subs. She just wanted to include/cater others as well, who are not Korean or English speakers. She was being considerate and obviously, she wanted to interact with her intl fans more...collaborate with them. I personally thought, "Oh this lady really has a unique way of connecting with her fans...she's really a breath of fresh air."
She was not forcing people. Let's not underestimate the fans who willingly signed up for it. For sure, they all knew the consequences of their action which means they had to make time for it, they will use their skills, there won't be any monetary compensation...just the rewarding thought that I did something for/with Kim Taeri. The haters probably lived under a rock, not knowing that such people exists. I see other intl fans of other YT videos that do that too, I mean for free, so why the frenzy? there is no backlash when fans translate for their artists all the time. Fans who know both languages take the time and energy to translate for us for free. there is no backlash for an artist asking her fans who are able to translate to translate.

I think translating her videos, her agency doing it is the least she can do. No one is asking for interviews, posts, interactions etc in English, only her yt videos that can be released whenever. She can do what many Korean channels do: release the video first and a day or two after add English translation. I translate some stuff in my spare time and let me tell you, it’s more difficult than it seems, diction, tone and expressions must be translated correctly in order to give the person speaking justice of their words. So to summarize, no I think it’s not ok asking people to do it for free.
Edit: i didn’t mean that she would translate it herself, she literally has an agency😂 I understand that there are different cultures and living situations and that money is treated differently for some, but personally I think that if you do something for others you would like to be praised for it regardless if it’s a hobby or not. Sometimes money is the kindness that people need and I still think asking people to do it for free is a joke, hobby or not.
Especially since Korean to English translation is hard. There are some words that can’t be translated in English. A single word can be pronounced/verbalized differently giving it a range of severity/harshness that can’t be translated into english. Sometimes it’s a tonal swing or dip in the voice/pronunciation that carries the inflection. Don’t even get me started on the many honorifics.
Some people translate for free as a hobby. It just depends on the person and their situation. If people who want to be paid for translating videos, they will definitely find other jobs, they wouldn't be taking on Kim Tae Ri's request and move on. She only asked for people who would like to do it for free. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking those who would like to translate for free to do it. There are lots of people who enjoy translating as a hobby and do it for free. By saying that you are disregarding the human capacity to do something nice for others without needing anything in return.
To be fair, it's not like she's forcing people to translate for free, I'm sure the translator will get credit which could provide many opportunities for that person which could be enough for someone. If someone didn't want to volunteer free work then they wouldn't. I don't think it's as big of a problem as it's made out to be especially seeing she's apologized for it. Those that have english as their first language (most of them) always demanding that thing get translated to their language for free, but get upset when something like this happen.
In Brazil we do it all the time to watch k dramas. They are all volunteers

I'm a big fan of KIM TAERI so I support her totally. She made a mistake because it is obvious that so many stans translate all the time! So she thought people might have fun doing it. Yes, paying people for their work is important, so she didn't think it through. But leave her ALONE and stopped trolling this awesome talent!
Looking at the comments, this is gonna be a controversial opinion…but no, famous celebrities should not be asking ppl to work for free. It may be someone’s choice to do it for free but then it calls ethics into question because the celebs are in a higher position of power.
it’s ok ig. many of fans will love participating in some kind of content creation of their favs. personally, i think if some group like skz asked their fans to do something similar, fans would be proudly doing this (esp bcz you can see who made subtitles under the video) (n esp bcz it can be used in your translation portfolio)

Basically anyone can submit their translation for free and needs a confirmation from the channel to publish them.
Fan translations are often better than the official ones. Because it's a labor of love for them. It's only a problem if someone tries to monetize their work afterwards.

Although we can't blame her, if she cares about and loves her fans, her staff can do the same. There are a number of actors on UA-cam, and because of their popularity overseas, they provide captions for several languages. Ji Chang Wook's videos on UA-cam have subtitles in almost all Asian languages, including English,Spanish and even in french.but she is not wrong.
Ordinary fans and viewers used to add translations before youtube removed the option. The actors are not obligated to add captions. It's their channel, their choices. Most content is translated by fans, be it news, dramas, movies, videos... So why not y'all pay those individuals for the subs instead?

She could ignore it and move on like many other artist out there but she decided to give fans their wishes by allowing fans to translate for her which is extremely common lmao. No big deal. Opening up the option for her fans to add translations onto her videos is a positive thing. Better than nothing. And most youtube videos are never translated so why should people expect she does.

As an actual professional linguist, HELL NO. even much smaller UA-cam channel has quality close caption that you could tell done by human. I mean sure, her fans can do it, especially those who has an interest in the craft, as practice, but ultimately the quality of the translation can be hugely compromised. And it’s an whole other thing if she decides to credit those who volunteered.
Community contributed translation is a thing, yes. But this move can also be deemed as an indicator that she doesn’t care about her international fans (in terms of the quality of content they get to consume) and considering how big she is, that’s just kinda cheap of her agency.
That was exactly my thought as well. And I don’t have any negative feelings about her or anything, I just think that getting translations this way may risk future problems. Like one bad situation could be that someone mistranslates something and it’s offensive/insulting to people and now because she gave them permission and is tying her name to that fan translator, it’s become a sticky situation….
Best solution in my opinion is to hire professionals who will do the translations cleanly, on time with when content comes out, etc. I think it could be beneficial to her career seeing as there will be better communication between her and international fans and maybe even give her more fame internationally (which could give her more job opportunities in other countries (like being a model for a magazine overseas, etc.)) and international fans will feel acknowledged and cared about.

Nah she does. For example kpop wouldnt be popular worldwide if they didnt cater to the english language by adding subtitles to their videos or making english version songs. English is the international language so it helps globally if they translate it.

At most, she’s never going to breach the Hollywood sphere. So she has no reason to care about her international fans at all. I’ve never seen a Korean actress successfully crossover.
She has the right to ask. It does take money to have things translated then have it placed in your video correctly timed. She's looking to see how serious and involved her over seas viewers really are. There could be backlash but her managers had to of told her the possibilities of doing this.

I feel like people were more offended by her not asking fans to translate at their own pace or time but the fact that she wrote paragraphs and made a google docs questionnaire that had many questions like “what language the speak” and “how many hours they can put in translating” I remember how she wrote it’ll take 6+ hours to translate (since her videos are long) and how she was picking and choosing fans like an interview to be sent to her or her management and then chosen. Her post felt like a job interview post without pay and if she went along with with it it would have been a commitment to whoever was chosen since she was asking for people to translate for hours out of their free time. And she sounded like she was looking for committed people and had demands that were not easy since people have lives. which was probably why many ppl especially Korean netizens were really offended by her behavior also probably bc of how much Koreans in general are overworked and I remember how there was an increase in work hours for Koreans. So it was just bad timing and her way of going around things came off as offensive to some. Many are mentioning how fans already translate for their favs but people need to understand they do it at their own pace on their free time plus I’m sure there are videos of hers on social media that were probably translated by fans but her way of asking was frowned upon. Like many said her fans wanted to translate for her but nothing she could have said would help her since Koreans would’ve have been mad either way. tbh It’s an unfortunate situation really. In many ways I feel like she was a scapegoat for the situation going on in Korea with overwork and hours being added for work and her saying that just added salt to people’s wound. International fans probably weren’t offended frankly I wasn’t either but to Koreans it was a big deal since they are so work driven but I guess they found their punching bag they can bully online since they can’t fight against the situation going on in their country.

Translating is a real job that people get paid to do. It’s not as simple as just feeding a script into google translate, but selecting the right words for the given context, finding the next best phrases for words with no direct translation, etc. A lot of ppl subtitle and translate media for free and sometimes that’s fine. But considering that Kim Tae Ri is a pretty successful actress I think the better response would be “I’ll have my team get on that” as opposed to “why don’t you guys do it?” I’m sure she was well intentioned and I like her work as well, but I can understand why fans are upset. Like just because a fan is bilingual doesn’t mean the responsibility to translate content for the rest of the fandom should fall on their shoulders.

I am pretty sure a lot of people would be glad to do this. Just for the sake of other people. I mean, people have been fan translating books into languages where they are not officially published, and sharing that with other fans who don’t know the language… just because they are fans.
I think that's really common, but most youtubers I've seen who do it call it "volunteer translating" and they'll put together the teams themselves. But there are application processes, etc.
This is a standard community practice. Fans volunteer for shout-outs. If I had the skills, I would translate my bias for free.

If it wasn't for the free translators I would have never found BTS back in 2016. I think their Korean speaking fans literally made it possible for us to connect with them and in turn, are a big part of why they became successful

I'm always really grateful when the artists I stan put up subtitles. I don't know how much it costs them but some of them are indie labels. Maybe they see the value of giving international fans reasons to stick around

You can't just pay people, especially internationally. There are labor and commerce laws. Having good community translations is often better quality than a professional translator who might not get the message and feeling across

Okay, so this is something that used to happen to only really popular UA-camrs back in the day, but community members could translate other people’s content. And even some kpop videos. One example is Shine by Pentagon, a lot of those subtitles are from fans. Maybe it’s just an old thing and since 2018 UA-camrs just get real translators, but people have been translating for free.-I’m guessing a lot of people don’t know this who haven’t been on UA-cam and bored enough to look at the captions menu. But it used to say something about the channel that translated the video in a language basically giving credit to them.
