  • During the Cousteau expedition to Polynesia, France was carrying out underground nuclear tests on the atoll of Mururoa in the Tuamotu Islands. To help allay fears about radiation, the French Defense Department invited Captain Cousteau and his team to observe a test blast and to study the effects on the surrounding environment. Cousteau divers documented fissures, created by the concussion of the tests, lacing the reef-this one went down more than 590 feet.
