"Damn, I've won" has got to be one of my favourite lines in the film. I really like that the devil is only interested in the fun of the chase and not actually winning because winning means game over.
She Never actually Lost it. It was temporarily "put on the shelf" and used as a Bargaining Chip for Something Bigger, and Better. Also helps when he is more "friendly" with The Dad.
The devil's upset because he won too easily. A good match becomes memorable when you win at the very last second, and yoru adversary is skilled enough to annoy you for a very long time!
No it wasn't because it was easy. It was because that meant the game was over. It is clear that he enjoyed playing. Whether it was because he enjoyed torturing Parnassus or because he truly enjoyed Parnassus company and came to respect him is up for debate. But remember, he said "your pops would never forgive me. That'd be a shame"...
@@blaqwhole4998 He definitely sees Parnassus as a friend at this point and only continues the game as an excuse to hang with him more. He genuinely didn't want his bro's daughter to be tormented in hell but she chose this.
I drove myself crazy trying to find this film. You see, I have a very vague memory of this very scene as a child, but of course I probably couldn't read then. I would randomly remember fragments of this scene as I grew up and I HAVE NO IDEA why it haunted me for so long--I didn't even know the name of the movie or what it was about. IT IS EXACTLY AS I REMEMBER IT--down to the part where she gives a kiss goodbye and enters a mirror, and then the guy seems disappointed or annoyed and says something along the lines of "dammit". THANK YOU SO MUCH person on reddit for including this on your recommended films list 🥺
Carmen Capistrano bro you found this only 4 months ago? crazy, most of these comments are hella old. Man, you could've just wrote a question in like an r/movies or something asking about a girl running through with glass shattering in a surreal black environment?
Go watch the music video for "I'm your baby tonight" by Whitney Houston. It tells the same story as this movie- the purpose of the mirror realm we live in and the game that is played by the entity that owns it.
Yeah I feel you too Feel Those things you do In your eyes I see a fire that burns To free the you That's running through Deep inside you know Seeds I plant will grow One day you will see And dare to come down to me Yeah come on come on now take the chance That's right Let's dance
@@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259 no lol he did prep for Batman ages before this. Lol do you actually think you would go into a role like the joker with no prep? Lol omg lol
Nah, it wasn't too easy. They had been playing this game for centuries. He said "damn" because at some point he start to enjoy playing the game with Parny and even began to respect Parny as a friend. Hence, the reason he said "you pop would never forgive me". To me it seems like he kept rigging the game so it would go on indefinitely. Since he was worried that her dad would be mad at him, to me that means he thought it was more of a friendship.
Blaq Whole closer to a gambling buddy than a friend. If Parnassus ever truly lost he would walk away from the table. Nick doesn’t want that, he wants the constant stakes and ever present “double or nothing!”

I saw this film on it's premiere in 2009, and to this day Tom Waits as Mr Nick has still remained my favourite character in the whole film.
I'm sad she lost her soul, but I love her exit with the kiss and disappearing into the fire.

She got her freedom, and her happy ending.

but it wasn't an easy win. he's just disappointed because it means the game he's enjoyed playing for so long is finally over.

The devil had a 2” banana in his hand and no monkey to share it with. That’s why he loses-
you ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
This comment is great given that Heath Ledger's Joker was partly modeled after Tom Waits.
Lily Cole is a an unusual looking beauty.
Tom Waits really deserved to at least see some supporting actor nominations for this movie.
0:54 “….god, stop. Your pop will never forgive me.”
That always cracks me up. 😂
What's even better is that Mr. Nick means it. He really doesn't want his games with Parnassus to end.

@@themartinman307 Interesting! I'll go watch it right now. Thank u !
You know what would've made this scene PERFECT? Moonlight. 😅
I get it! Because heathe ledger played the joker and jude law and johnny depp played dumbledore and grindlewald while colin ferrel played the penguin.
He's the most charming man alive
The location is quite surreal, which is why I love this scene :)
This movie had quite a distinct camera work
"Damn! ... I've won!" So hard
Yeah
I feel you too
Feel
Those things you do
In your eyes I see a fire that burns
To free the you

Deep inside you know
Seeds I plant will grow

Let's dance
I was sold on this movie as soon as I knew Tom Waits was playing Satan.
I heard that Heath Ledger actually based a few mannerisms as the Joker off of Tom Waits (The Devil in this scene).
because he was working on this while working on the dark knight???

What is the music from this scene?
I would sell one of my vital organs to dance with Tom Waits. Wtf
Same.
Never ever saw a young woman liking Tom Waits. Now that´s a wtf. Well, with liking i meant his music. I´m just assuming that you listen to him
Omg me too he's like the living end

multiverse of madness before it was cool.
Was ahead of the time-- Also the broken glasses effect is one of the coolest and most imaginative things I've seen. Even to this day.
this movie confused me when I saw it. I was like wtf
you clearly hadn't smoked enough weed then
i had no idea what was going on
why she lose?
Is anton dead or not
its called "the devil's dance"
Why would the devil say "Damn"? I always wondered that.
Because she was spost to be the prize not one of the souls

Lily Cole kinda looks like Natalie Lust.
She has sort of a biblical face.

I’m not sure, but I know that when Mr Nick freed Valentina, she was last seen in a restaurant with Anton as her husband, and they had a kid.
how to get out of the devil's hands... only a woman knows that
