This is so good to hear. My mom and dad took me to Herbie Hancock when I was four, in 1973. It was my first concert. I love my mom and dad, and I still listen to Herbie. Music crazy since.

My experience matches yours in so many ways, Dave. The diversion is that I went from prog rock to Weather Report while playing ragtime & swing in the jr high & high school jazz bands. That led me to go back to the 40s & 50s swing bands, then on to Miles & Coltrane and the stuff the Beats were listening to since I was into beat literature as well. I'm of the exact same generation of drummers. Great explanation of how we searched out the source of true inspiration in drumming.

That is a superb answer to that question and many other unasked ones, haha. I am only 17 and I am still undergoing a journey of musical discovery -- as you said, it's still always a question of "what's next." 4 years ago, you could've caught me listening to unintelligent-sounding death metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel. Today, after much searching and being a part of a community jazz ensemble, I hardly ever listen to metal and The Bad Plus is one of my all time favourite bands

Dave -- we're the same age - got hooked on the same bands at the same time. I have to say -- there are some who never, ever seemed to admit RUSH as a band they liked until after the RUSH movie came out (thinking of another famous "Dave" drummer here). It was uncool for DECADES to say you were influenced/inspired by Rush.

There is nothing wrong with liking Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel.
I am I jazz fan that also appreciates talented metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, and especially the band Death itself. Yes, they are very different from Mingus, or Sun Ra, but good music is good music, and in the ear of the beholder. Also check out Sonic Youth.
Honest music has infinite variations. Explore it. Listen to death metal, underground hip hop, afro-cuban jazz, bluegrass, mariachi, and blues.

Sam Rivers played with a drummer named Anthony Cole while he was in Florida. I remember hearing that Anthony expressed an appreciation for Gene Hoglan at some point. I'm not exactly sure of the context though.

Well said imo except I don't get feeling sorry for kids today. They're still finding music, it's just easier. I think they can process it. Just saw Bad Plus at Jazz Showcase in Chicago -he/they were great. He talks about Led Zep and the Tony Wms era Miles stuff, and, to me, that very much defines him. He's surely more than that, but those two influences are super clear. You can totally see and hear them in his playing. Wonderful player and I can't wait to see where he goes from here.
