Would you say there's any difference in quality/taste between home-laid eggs and store-bought? Also, I never knew that chickens laid that many eggs... every day?! I'm definitely considering building a coop now. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely! Home-laid eggs are much more flavorful. We noticed the difference right away and anyone we give eggs to raves about how good they are. Even baked goods that we put them in taste better! Depending on the breed and time of year they do lay that much. If egg production is a priority for you (ie. an egg a day) you may want to consider production breeds such as the white leghorn for white eggs or red sex-link (they go by many names Golden Buff, Golden Comet, ISA Brown, etc.) for brown eggs. Both of those breeds pretty much lay an egg a day year round. We have a golden buff and she only doesn’t lay about 1 day out of every month! Thanks for the support and good luck with your chicken journey, it will definitely be worth it!
Meyer Hatchery White Rocks will lay all winter long(regardless of how cold it gets) and get pretty big. This year, I'm going to try Naked Neck Turken chickens from Murray McMurray hatchery which they say lay well, but will also sit eggs and hatch them out(White Rocks will not). Also, the Naked Neck chickens needs less protein to produce eggs, since they have less feathers using protein...
@@ThePyrfectFamily I'll let you know in 2025, as I plan on ordering them for sometime in June of that year. Probably be laying in Nov-Dec. I'm hoping they are all that Murray McMurray says they are. Stromberg's also sell them, but appear to be just black, instead of multiple colors.
I hit one year April 7th. I'm planning a birthday party. I started off with 7 and am at 22. Only five hens laying the rest are still growing or roosters. I'm finding organic food to be expensive and when the others start laying I have people to buy eggs.
Those are “hen saddles” and they help whenever hens are molting to cover up the spots where there are no feathers to keep other hens from picking at the bald spots.
That’s right! We decided not having a rooster is best for our current set-up. There are some great benefits to having a rooster, but they are not ideal for all circumstances.
I don't recommend chickens to people with small gardens in towns or cities, my aunt got some for her two daughters, she has cats & dogs as well. She has a well kept small garden, but after she got the chickens her yard looked a complete mess, poop & feathers everywhere, she got rid of her birds within two years & her home is clean again now, but she had too many pets & a full time job.
Ooohhi love Light Brahma's. Had a large flock long ago, big great layers of very large eggs year around.
Yes! Totally agree, our Loretta is a favorite around here!

Home eggs are by far better tasting.
Oh yes, your girls at home are fresh eggs and they taste completely different. They even look different. The yolks are so rich!

Thanks for the recommendations! I have been looking at those Naked Necks too. You will have to let me know how you like them.

Congrats!! What a fun a fun idea! 😁
What are some of the hens wearing, and why?
