"Always with the heating and the beating." That's a shirt.
i want that shirt
That Shirt would be Fantastic
I was going to come here to say that. Good Job.
Please make such a shirt
I'd get that one
Alec, great idea for a future episode... Alec takes a trip to a museum to talk to an expert on swords and old blacksmithing techniques!!
The Royal Armouries in Leeds springs to mind
I would watch that
Peter Johnsson's forge in Sweden! Or Patrick Barta, or Leo "Tod" Todeschi. master smiths all and well versed in historical methods.
Agreed! These videos make me wonder so much about older blacksmithing techniques. Like chainmail today is done totally differently than in the past. ( they just coiled wire, like a spring, placing one in the other then flatten these springs and voila. 1h work = 1 chainmail piece )
Daniel O'Brien boooorrriiinnngggg
Some say the sword is still straightening to this day
Is it now
*rainbows intensify*
Might have taken a turn for the worse, it was after all just pride month.
Reading this in 2024 makes it even funnier😂
When you plan to make a rapier but end up with a double-edged katana. Great vid man
Dom Sow katana banana yup samurai #2
MR.VIDEO MASTER 101 6062 into fairytales hu?
I was promised Alec on stilts >:(
they didn't arrive in time sadly ;) next time!
holding you to that.
Alec Steele no damascus stilts, Alec? 😄
"It's still alot bent"
Englishman Englishing done good.
Love the 25 minute episodes!
:')
You make the hour in transit to work each morning an absolute breeze.
I've really been enjoying the return of the educational aspect in your videos.
Keep it up, it's been amazing over the past year-or-so, learning from your experiences.
new title for your video.
Alec Steele and the ever straightening blade
That sounds like the title of an animated movie.
lol true
I'll be honest, that was one of the most stressful things I've ever endured. Right around the time you mentioned that you thought you knew why it was curving, I knew you were either going to cut your losses and start over, orrrrr... try something that sounds crazy, but you have enough experience in this field to just sort of trust your intuition. NICE job persevering. Also, Jamie, good job making a riveting 25 minute video!
Hey guys! Big thanks for all the comments about the flexibility of a traditional rapier in the recent videos. At the time of this recording, I was still uninformed, so apologies in advance for incorrectly stating the Rapier wants flexibility. I now understand, it instead wants to be stiff so the maximum force can be transmitted to the opponent!
Will you team up with some Hema people to test the swords you made so far? There are some great channels on youtube
I have a large collection of antique swords and can give you detailed measurements in the future, if needed
Alec Steele make a sword forge
Can I just say this is going to be FANTASTIC! I am excited
hi please don't swipe away can u read this :) can I ask I am 13 and would love to get in to it and I have been doing wood work because erm my mum and dad say me messing with hot stuff is a bad idea I couldn't possibly know why that was but I don't know where to start but I am absolutely captivated by all types of black smithing and I was wondering if you could give me a hand getting in to it I think it will be FANTASTIC so could you tell me if can help me thanks for your time.
A thought on the "banana" issue: You are normalizing the blade supported at the bottom, and hence with gravity acting on the weight of the blade ABOVE it's point of support. It may be more advantageous to try normalizing the blade supported from above, so that gravity acts to straighten rather than to bend it.
this is exactly what I was thinking. but there is a second option, that's more expensive. if you have a large flat electromagnet you could lay it flat and turn on the magnet to keep it it straight while it get back to temp.
He does have one. In the new thingamagig he bought.
Surface Grinder
he has one of those on his new grinding table
Had the same thought, some kind of hanger rig.
“It’s been the focus of your attention for the past 5 minutes” -13 minutes into the video. That made me chuckle but good job
I'm guessing that as long as the sword was strong and sharp, the people you stuck it into weren't in a position to criticise the sword's aesthetic qualities.
Maxx B but if it was not tempered right and had warps it causes the blade to have easier sheer points and could break easier
Maxx B I love that he Clearly skipped right over this comment
Maxx B I find your comment funny.
But if you’re actually curious, swords were often used as a symbol of status. That is also why swords are often gilded and decorated, especially on the hilt and pommel.
brutaly honest
"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You dissed my sword. Prepare to die...."
Hey Alec. You seem to have a lot of problems with the size of your forge. Maybe you could make a bigger one in one of your next videos? After this series of course.
I thought the same, a forge 3 times deeper would heat the blade across it's length equally, I thought it may be banana-ing (Is that even a word??) due to it cooling down at the tips whilst the centre holds the heat longer???
*Alec likes this comment* BIGGER FORGE CONFIRMED
20" forge so you can have the whole banana in there at one time. You can just use some bricks to close the end of it when you dont need it to be as deep.
Please make a big forge, that would be an amazing build and it would be a pleasure to watch the videos from that
Bigger forge equals bigger projects!
"Always with the Heating and the Beating..." can we please make this into a shirt? Ill buy 2
I agree also a "Flux it!" shirt
"Always with the heating and the beating..."
"What do you think you are, a Blacksmith or something, waving your hammer around like that..."
Torrey Jones At least he has not stopped yacking and even has more wacking on this build!
The most unnormal normalised cycle in history, but it actually made normal sense
Bannanering (new word trademarked by alec)
MrTripppleB new shirt idea
Except, it makes more sense to spell it like banana - e.g. Bananaring / banana-ing.
I'm gonna say it.
Your the best in the world.
2 reasons why.
Not afraid to show your mistakes.
Your age.
Thanks man :P :D
Definitely the best on UA-cam, quality of material and cinematography are alwaysish on point. I look forwardevery day to your videos. Time well spent.
True though could'nt have said it better
He’s gotta be careful though there were a times or two where he was more of a youtuber than a blacksmith.
He is
"Always with the heating and the beating" Sounds like a new shirt to me.
It’s BARNARNERING again.... yup I just pissed myself
This is one of my favorite episodes! So we’ll edited! The buildup each time you try to straighten the blade, your patience, your humor, showing us the fails and the wins, and the Southern accent was priceless!
"Always with the Heating and the Beating..."
Do I sense the next T-Shirt...?
Si1entDave DO IT DO IT NOW
DO IT!!!
and also one with 4th time lucky
Alec you should make cool door handles/knobs for your workshop!!
I'm feeling it!
It's not the length of the video, but the content that truly matters. I'll take 8 minutes of Alec, or even better, half an hour of Alec. What matters is the consistently great content. Never a boring day, Mr. Steele!
“Always with the heating and beating” 😂😂 “Heat it and beat it” would look great a t-shirt
25 minutes of Alec Steele. Bliss! And congrats to 700k!
I wonder if they used like plumb bobs strings connected and hung vertically with a heavy weight on the bottom for a straight edge. Great video man. 👍🏻
A smithy here in Sweden used to make the straightness test using a similar idea. I also know that undisturbed water or fine sand has been used to achieve 'flat' surfaces to compare too. :)
Hey Alec. I have ran into this problem before. What you can do is bolt two pieces of mild steel to each side of the blade so that the whole blade can't warp. Quench the blade with the mild steel bolted to it.
Note to self: watch the rest of the video before commenting. 😐
Che Coleman no harm no foul haha
New term ive never learned before...
Banahnering
That cliffhanger had me last episode.
Phenomenal cinematography, great blacksmithing1
11:28 can you actually see the blade move when cooling?
if you compare with the red line on the flag in the background and the wise you can see, yes, its moving
Yeah, that was an awesome shot
Just skip thirty seconds and u can see it jump
The reference to the background flag is flaggerblastingly accruate to show the straightening. I was hoping SO MUCH a timelapse of that section, we could have seen it so much.
Once again, your honesty proves more valuable than your first time successes. It takes integrity and grit to show the challenges, and, as always, it is appreciated.
To take the 🍌out, heat the opposite side with a rose bud and let it cool. When it shrinks it will be straight. Look at how I beams are straightened when made new. They come out twisted and someone heats it and it cools ---
This is the answer. I know a guy who can straighten an i beam with a well placed weld.
But then don't you loose the hardness?
I was wondering about precisely the point you make at the end: how did historical armorers/cutlers 'do it.' We do have museum items they made. What might they show us? Anyway, I know from a different industry that quality control is demanding and that it rewards patience in terms of return custom. It is amazing to viewers that you can be so patient and so positive through all the 'agony' of creation.
Well for armoring we don't normally have straight lines, I might be forgetting a simple one that I use by from what I've seen on historic examples the edges are often very skew or rough
James Ellsworth, That is SO true about his patience and positive attitude. I would have been throwing things across the shop :P He is probably going to make one of the best swords in existence though :)
Oh yeah! Thanks Alec!
Since the slomo guys have that new super slow show I really think you are up for a collab Alex. How cool would a quench look at 100,000 frames per second or other various black smithing shenanigans. MAKE IT HAPPEN WHOS WITH ME
You're at 700k followers. When I started watching you were posting vids from Australia. You had little over 7000 followers then. I hope you reach a million soon. You deserve it.
Thanks for the great content.
Just a little bit of a problem or two. 1. Wouldn't "gravitational issues" be about weight and attitudinal issues be about the height? 2. If we were to not follow your advice about never following your advice we would end up following your advice and if we were to follow your advice about not following your advice we would have to ignore your advice about never following your advice and end up back where we started in the beginning of this sentence.
I leave it to you to figure out what you were really talking about.
That combination of blue dykem sweatshirt, forging gloves and protective mask makes you look like a low-budget superhero :D
I absolutely love the humour you brought in last two vids. Cheers, mate!
Also: counter-warp theory confirmed!
Great episode!
I absolutely LOVE that you put a good quality trauma kit in your affiliate links, i recognize a lot from this stuff from our TCCC training in the military! When you're around heavy machinery it's absolutely essential to know and train first aid and to have a good medical care kit! (Altough I'd go for a bigger kit since the size doesn't matter in the shop)
Regards!
When things go badly wrong in the shop it's very very bad. I'm thrilled you agree with how important this stuff is. Tourniquet in my pocket always no matter what, IFAKS in the shop and truck.
Good thought on a bigger kit for the shop by the way.
I miss tacticool(lol) combat casualty care, I was the CLS instructor for my entire command in Korea for area 1 anyway...
Alec's forge flares firey madness, basket hilt waits for genesis. Power hammer screams and crashes, quenching oil spits hard'ning hiss.
is that one of them haiku deals?
S lichens comments / is that a haiku, LJ? No. But here's one, sir!
I have created a new sword....I call it the Banana Sword!
Loving how you don't let misstakes and temporary setbacks get you down Alec, keep on heating and beating!
Dude, I know nothing about forging or blacksmithing. But ur channel is beyond entertaining. Keep it up!
Alec, you should watch "MAN AT ARMS S3 • E18 Kennosuke's Sword: Kuromukuro "
they show a quench of a katana blade in a fish tank and in slow mo, it is cool to se the steal warps :)
love your videos btw :)
Man At Arms is not bad, but it if weren't for their tame Russian blacksmith, everything else is just plasma cut and sharpened.
Yeah, Ilya Alekseyev is a wonderful blacksmith, definitely makes the series watchable.
Alec and Ilya, my two most favorite smiths!
Maybe you could ask Ilya on how to avoid warpage of the blade.
Can't you use the magnetic table on the ajax to keep it straight while it cools ?
Richard Henderson heat the table with a torch beforehand ?
maximus222
I believe that metal looses its magnetism when it is heated too a certain degree. But i am not sure.
"THIS IS FREAKING MAGIC!" My favorite Alec Steele quote yet. Such fun. Thanks Alec.
Im really glad there's finaly someone who shows the full process of making a baskethilt rapier, because it is such an amazing piece of armory. Keep up the good work!
You could have a 2h vid and I still gladly watch it great work
Alessio Dp ,
Remember what you said about horizontal surface when you moved.
Remove this bench !
The quality of the videos massively improve since jamie has been with you, good job jamie!
I remember my parents saying "do as I say, not as I do". Love your overcoming problems!
Love the southern accent.
kirk orr me to
"always with the heating and the beating"
-Alec Steele
Alec, I love that you learned to control your zest. You're as enthusiastic and energetic as ever, but it doesn't feel as forced as before. Cheerio!
Improvise, adapt, overcome. Great job, can’t wait for the finished rapier. Really enjoy the journey!
That's one massive sword-shaped bi-metallic strip ;)
And that is exactly the problem: different metals with different thermal expansion and quench properties.
Tri-metallic really. The damascus is 2 different steels on it's own. The he tossed 1055 in there to really make things interesting.
21:29
Name of that song ?
And you are doing amazing ! could never do that ;D so satisfying to wach
I also want to know this, and the song at 3:10
If you watch the lines of the British flag while the blade was cooling, you can see the blade straightening itself. Always great watching an artisan do their craft, keep rocking it Mr. Steele.
The way Alex talks, Alex could write a book or a cartoon about forging for kids and it'll be magical and great.
Alecs next series of videos making a longer forge
Still waiting for a “painful split nut modification” shirt
On your khopesh collaboration the guy you sent the blade to, used the magnet chuck on his surface grinder to flatten out any warps in the rough design you sent him. He heated the metal to just past non-magnetic, placed it on the chuck, engaged it, and waited for it to cool enough to get drawn down onto the magnet. I kept yelling at my monitor for you to use your magnet chuck! My gf came all worried, thinking something was wrong. I told her "HE'S NOT USING HIS MAGNET CHUCK!" Now she thinks I need to see a therapist. Thanks a lot Alec!
Man, this episode was a freaking journey. Excited to see this come to completion.
I could imagine that they ground their own "surface tables" for referencing straightness to a certain degree. By using horse hair like on an indtrument to have a straight line in between 2 points (finger to finger). I believe there were also stones that are molecularly strong in one direction but 'weak' in another direction. So if you split a granite block or something similiar, you could break it pretty straight due to its natural breaking direction. And you could perfect it by grinding it with stones i think
I wonder if it actually mattered... Except for cosmetic reasons, I don't think that a *slightly* bent blade would do much difference, especially if it was a common soldier's sword; If it can be structurally sound, straightness wouldn't be a concern hehe
I imagine that historically they might have used slate. When split it produces very flat surfaces, they still use it for the playing surface in billiards tables.
ARIK KH. You are right. A knive or sword for the military forces wasn't that big of a deal. I think the important thing was that it actually cuts and was stabil enough to survive at least one fight. But knives or swords that were made olny for cosmetic reasons like a trophy or a present of on king for another for example was needed to be pretty straight i believe. We europeans didnt have that warping problem as much i believe because we didnt use damascus steel i think.
The chinese craftsmen did. They had the damascus and needed the blade to be straight and hard and strong, but also soft and giving a bit so it wouldt snap. They perfected this craft so much that its known all over the world. The samurai swords handed by men to their kids who gave them their kids imside their family are sometimes hundreds of years old. They might be a little rusty but these swords still do the job.
The crafting and forging of a samurai sword is very impressive abd very old.
Didn't Damascus steel originate from the Arab world, namely the region with the city of Damascus?
they made the pieces of the pillars of the acropolis so perfectly flat that the pieces of wood they used to index them in the center are sill there and also still smell.
It's passed time to build a longer forge buddy
Was it the first or second thing you did when you took over your new work-space?
Yknow... tweak the smoke detectors...
We drilled holes in the floor, made new rooms, hung lights off the ceiling, hunted for mobile signal, got 2 trailer loads of machinery delivered, you know, a standard day!
Great video Alec, congrats on 700k! 🎉🎊🎉🎊
You should use your american accent more often.
I did not notice, when was it?
Mme. Hyraelle around d 16:13
"southern" not american. Most of us do not drawl like that.
As a citizen of the deep south, I gave your accent a score of 7 out of 10 lol. It had a bit too much Texas twang and South Alabama drawl . as with your sword, it was a bit bananas (Buahahaha.. Sorry, couldn't resist). Good job though.
Make a longer forge :)
Wow, what brilliant business sense you have Alec. I appreciate the opportunities you are taking to allow yourself to truly do what you love and 'not do production orders'.
I do historical Fencing as a hobby, and seeing you make a rapier was something I was so excited about, I told my group about it. Can't wait to see the finished work.
going to need a bigger forge
Make A slingshot
Boris Mohr that is Jörgs job..
21:28 "Let's get _straight_ to it." Nice one, Alec.
"It's Bananering Again!" - for an Alec Steele shirt.
Alec, this is a shirt I would buy.
lesson learned, a sword intended to be straight shouldn't have different steels on the front and back of the blade.
Still think need to build a display wall for all swords.
I really appreciate that you’re adding back more instruction to your videos. Shows that you read the comments. I wish we could commission swords from you!
Jamie's editing is undefeated. Hilarious how the dramatic music cur and came back on again....
Field hockey for the win!!! You gots to make a stick! Didn't think you could get cooler!
Skookum vid, Alec.
Holy crap 25 minutes of blademaking, I’m in heaven
I love how you can make pushing and pulling a sword through a forge look badass
What happened to Sam, will you ever address it ?
He did, a while back. Sam has his own channel now. I don't remember the reason for the split. I was a bit vague.
Banksc 1andonly he already has in a video. And Sam posted a video about it as well. Check Sam's channel if the vid is still up
I must of missed that video guys
I wondered if Alec had out grown Sam which is a shame as the videos they done together were good.
Banksc 1andonly I’m here! Channel changed it’s name....
don't give this sword to that other dude for the Damascus reveal like you did with the kopesh. he made a crap ending video of the series.
Hey Alec!!! I have binge watched your...EVERYTHING!!!! And you..IMHO Are one of the few masters of bringing back the old crafts!!! The way you have progressed in your craft, and Honestly Given it to whoever may pick up a tool and try is...??? unheard of in this day and age..!! I thank you and your crew for showing that its a privilege and honer to stand on the shoulders of those that came before you, and to learn from the past, and to teach the basics of how modern man came to be!!! without blacksmiths we would still be in the stone-age!!
“When in doubt, use a hammer. Or more fire.” Possibly my new favorite quote
Video quality has been gradually getting worse since you left the old workshop. Then suddenly in this video, it's terrible. Low contrast, muted colour, completely lacking in sharpness. It's like watching through an oil smeared screen. Have you changed your process or are you not bothered about image quality any more?
Screw Driver i get what your saying it looks like that to
Screw Driver His editor Jaime has been working very hard to get daily videos out. It's a large hard process. Not to mention the new wacky editing they have tried recently. They take pride in their work and it's still viewable and enjoyable. While your criticism should be noted, I think they are doing tops.
I know exactly how difficult and demanding the process is, especially with the added pressure of banging it out daily. To be able to keep up with the sheer volume of content is a LOT more difficult than many casual viewers would even begin to realise. However it is beginning to affect the picture quality of the video, probably due to speeding up the workflow by using a low data rate codec. The content is of course amazing, the video editing is extremely good, just sayin' the picture quality has suffered dramatically which is a shame.
I too, am unhappy about this free content. Off to the comment section I go!
It'd be a lot better if you tube wouldn't eat all the bit rate. There were some cool shots which would have been a lot better if they'd have been uploaded in 1440 so there'd be detail left.
Alec Steele's cooking channel. Bananas and spaghetti galore.
11:27 is the most amazing second I've witnessed in all of these blacksmithing series.
Cheers Alec! I frequent the mountain man rendezvous at Ft Bridger, Wyoming every September, wherein vendors sell items that would have existed before 1840. The antler handle Damascus knives are a real treat. I think that such a project would be a fun little historical challenge. Forge on!
That shot where Alec was standing there like a rapier..... I’ll show myself out thank you
Congratulations on 700k man, woo
Your southern American accent is SPOT ON. "Git on down on that thur ray-peer"
700K🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 YAY!!
Proud of Sir Alec Steele the Blacksmith.
It’s great that you promote safety and health! Absolutely the right thing to do. It shows you care for your viewers. Too many youtubers are nonchalant regarding safety but I guess that’s something with the risk taking personality required to start a UA-cam career.
I think my favorite part of these videos is the almost David Tennant levels of excitability Alec shows, it's highly entertaining
What qualifications do you need to Start blacksmithing
Battling in the warp is always difficult. What with the chaos taint, demonspawn etc. The Emperor protects.
