- For parents who want to be intentional about how their children are formed, homeschooling is often attractive, yet for many families it can seem like an impractical pipe dream. Today I sit down with Sarah Mackenzie, founder and host of Read-Aloud Revival, to discuss all things homeschooling. We discuss many of the common hesitations people have to homeschooling, the familial benefits of a shared learning environment, the importance of intergenerational education, how to homeschool if both parents have to work, many resources for homeschooling, and much more.

While still dating, my now husband asked me if I was willing to homeschool future children, all the way through high school. He knew it was a priority for his children. And I agreed!
Your story sounds like mine! My husband asked me when we were dating as well. I told him "that's for crunchy granola nutjobs!" 🤣
We went on to have 5 children, and our oldest just graduated --- homeschooled all the way!
Thank you SO much for having Sarah Mackenzie on. I LOVE your podcast, but as a Catholic mom of 6 who homeschools, some of your guest have been the kind of guests whose advice give moms crippling panic and anxiety attacks seeking to control every aspect of life. Sarah Mackenzie is SO life-giving. She is amazing!!!
I thought the same exact word to describe her in contrast to other pro homeschool experts.
@@RachelDee YES!!!
She's my favorite ❤
This comment is gold. So many of Lila's guests do make one feel inadequate or like I am not doing enough as a parent. This woman was so refreshing! I absolutely loved her comment about bringing what you have and allowing God to make it enough.
Which guests made you feel that way?
I've homeschooled my 2 older kids for 4 years. I also run a legal business and have 2 toddlers. We put the older two in a crossfit camp this month. Running to drop them off and pick them off is crazy!! I couldn't imagine having kids in different schools and different programs and worrying about homework, teachers, waking early and packing lunches, etc 😅 people say we're nuts for homeschooling but honestly it's a lot calmer of a life than the alternative.
Good perspective! I hadn’t thought of it this way.
Please Lord give me the Grace of homeschooling, show my son’s Father is the best choice .
I am 39 years old, and I was homeschooled from Kindergarten through Highschool. I believe I got an excellent education. My school day started at 8:30 and ended at 3:30. My mother had a very structured schedule for us. I preferred it and performed best this way. Our grading scale was similar to the local school district. However, I needed a 94% or better to earn an "A." My curriculum was heavy on classic literature. I also played sports with the homeschool coop and the Christian school in my town. I was able to go to college, get my bachelor's degree, and find a good job.
I'm glad that worked out well for you. That's a really long homeschool day and would never work for our situation. There's a lot of wasted time in the traditional school setting that operates on that sort of a schedule. Our 11 yr old is able to complete Bible study, math, reading and writing within 3 hrs. He has an ant farm, takes care of chickens, reads history books, participates in youth group, cooks meals, and does jui jitsu 3x per week.
Gods little wink to me as I’m in the thick of discerning homeschooling my first born 😂 thank you for this!! What a beautiful and grace filled witness she is!
Love that!
Her book Teaching from Rest is short and worth the read!
Current homeschool mom and a Doctor of Education who spent over 20 years teaching grades K-3! It shouldn't surprise many that those of us who can are leaving the system to teach our own! I'm currently watching the reading wars play out from a far, research being misinterpreted in regards to literacy, and from a personal stance, I can attest that our most gifted students are not being served well in the "classroom box"! We do an eclectic format in our home mixing unschooling, classical elements, along with core classes. My son who was once diagnosed as dyslexic and humiliated in front of his peers is now in line through his achievement to apply to top schools for college. I share reading strategies on my UA-cam for families who want to homeschool their kids, helping them to understand the developmental reading spectrum ( no, kids do not all need to learn at age 5 how to read) and sharing with the community how our current school system is creating functional illiteracy in the next generation by ignoring critical research!

I love Sarah Mackenzie. I’m pregnant with my 5th (Catholic mama here), and I was fearful about homeschooling with another new baby, but when she speaks about homeschooling with twins it was so comforting and realizing that I can do it by the grace of God. I have let go of the fear, and I am embracing this season ❤️
Love Sara Mackenzie! I am a long time homeschooler, 20 years, and I just want to encourage of the young moms out there to give it a try! You don't have to be an expert, you just have to be invested in helping your kids grow.
Thank you 😊😊😊
Oh I am so glad you interviewed her. In my mind, she will be the patron saint of homeschooling in a century. She just brings so much encouragement and joy to mothers, and I love her reading lists!
I agree with you. She is a gem!
Homeschooled our three for most of their education. We didn’t follow the public school model. We didn’t work as many hours on busy work. Had more time every day for family and peace. We took off before Christmas through
New Year’s instead of summer break. We went on lots of field trips. All three are college graduates.
Sarah helped me to go from despair in my homeschooling to thriving! I highly recommend her podcast ❤
I've homeschooled my kids for 10 years now. I recently joined RAR Premium and it has been unbelievably helpful! Sarah is such an amazing coach.
I’ve been discerning joining so good to know!❤
@@amotherslittleway Same!
Good to know. I’m thinking of homeschooling my child as well
I’m a mom of 4, including a 2 year old and 4 month old. My husband has given me the blessing to homeschool our 7 and almost 5 year old this next school year. But I remember telling a close friend just last night that the one concern/fear I have is that I know I will feel exhausted by bedtime after trying to manage our household and our girls’ activities and learning every day.
So, I’m definitely going to listen to this! I know I need the encouragement!
I also have four kids ages almost 2, 3, 4.5 and 6. We just started homeschooling, and while it is exhausting, I am also so confident it will be worth all the exhaustion and sacrifice. Praying for strength for you, too! By God’s grace, we can do it!
You'll be ok! I home ed my 3 who are similar ages to yours (4th on the way) and I promise you'll be ok! It does take time to adjust, so be kind and patient with yourself as you set off on this adventure. There is absolutely no need to replicate school at home and you can get so much done in such a small amount of time. Most learning happens throughout the day. I love that I get to focus a lot on building good habits in my children and teaching them how to contribute to the running of the house. These habits and skills lead to good virtues and I think a desire to work hard and gain knowledge. It happens quite organically. I follow a lot of Charlotte Mason principles and they are so life giving. We enjoy poetry tea time on occasion and getting outside a lot. Short lessons and living books. I'm learning so much alongside my kids, too. So... enjoy the journey and give yourself plenty of time to adjust and build the home life that is delightful and facilitates the learning you desire for your kids.
I've just realised who Sarah Mackenzie is - I've never read her book, but I've heard time and again that it's brilliant :)
My oldest is about to be in fourth grade and I have 4 with my youngest just turning 1. It gets easier as they get older, they become SO self sufficient. My son gets up and feeds the animals and starts on his schoolwork before most of the family is up. I’m not saying they’re all like that, but you can definitely train them to help out. Many hands make light work! Currently teaching him how to do his own laundry, everyone has their own laundry day, that helps me so much. Also before every school year (we homeschool year round, helps take away the burden of time if someone gets sick and we usually go for 6 weeks, take 1 week off) I read Sarah’s book Teaching From Rest, it’s EXCELLENT!
that’s so funny! I have the Andreolas’ Charlotte Mason Companion as well as the book Mother Culture. I’m also looking into structuring things that way.
My fear is that I won’t be able to teach my children everything. But I’ve been reassured and encouraged by the Charlotte Mason Companion that I shouldn’t have that expectation anyway. It’s impossible to teach everything. And the things that matter most are not taught in a traditional school setting anyway. That’s everything from religion to values to “home-ec” skills. My husband seems a bit concerned that our daughters won’t be prepared for college but I’ve heard and witnessed countless stories of homeschoolers excelling past their public school and even private school peers. They grow to love learning and learn how to learn. Traditional school produces a lot of kids who have just learned rote memorization but have not actually grown to love the subject.
I just finished my first year of homeschooling and it was amazing! Hard days, yes, but most of all it was so so worth it! You just learn as you go. It teaches patience and I LOVE that my little kids get to have a real relationship with my “school aged” kids instead of being without them all day.
That's a really important aspect for me to remember. Our 4 yr old adores her 11 yr old brother. He's homeschooled so they're very close.
Aw, I just started watching and my 3 year old got so excited and said, “That’s Tomie dePaola’s friend!”
i love all these homeschooling interviews
in fact ive noticed that the children turn out ridiculously SMART
more than public schooled kids
That comment about a peaceful and joyful mom was extremely impactful for me. Thank you for that
I needed to hear this. I've been homeschooling for 4 years and feel like i am constantly failing. But I've felt on my heart God telling me not to worry about all the books I'm teaching on. There's all this pressure I put on myself when it was never meant to be that way. I'm encouraged to continue this homeschooling journey with my kids. ❤
Sarah Mackenzie and her podcast literally changed my homeschool experience! After listened to her podcast and reading her books I completely changed my mindset and our homeschool model and it’s been a drastically different experience! ❤️
Thank you to Sarah!!!
Sarah Mackenzie's Read Aloud Revival membership is worth every penny! She is so wise and creates beautiful books and curricula.
Lila is so pretty omg 😭 Also, I'm interested in home schooling my future children. Kids nowadays are scary.
Just hearing about all of these different teaching methods and ciriculum is so intimidating. It feels like i could research my whole life and never fully figure out how to do this well.
Yup, and Google is no help too, it only wants to offer online so it feels too overwhelming to figure out
I was intimidated too when I began in 2019. I decided to try it for just one year and reassess and it felt less daunting. Remember you do not have to commit to k-12 when you begin. What encouraged me to keep going was seeing progress, especially my son learning to read. Confidence comes with time/experience. You can do it, Mama!
Just start. That is the hardest part. You will learn along the way.
You learn along the way!
I hate looking at curriculum fairs or magazines or websites. Ask a mom friend to show you what she uses. Maybe ask a second, and then just go for it!
So many different ways to homeschool now its amazing; it can feel overwhelming sometimes so i definitely have to do baby steps. Sarah gives me such a relief when i hear her and shes so joyful. Her "Teaching from Peace" is so life giving!
Absolutely love Sarah McKenzie and her peaceful and beautiful approach to education and reading! She’s a gem 💎 ❤
I told my husband when we were dating that I was going to be homeschooling when I had children. It was a requirement for me when looking for a husband
As a mama with two small kids considering homeschooling, this was so encouraging. Thank you for this episode!
Unfortunately, we live in Germany where homeschooling is forbidden by law. Although I would love to teach and educate my children by myself, Iam not allowed to. To move to another country, where homeschooling is allowed, is a huge risk for our family. We could only move to countries like Australia, Canada, America, etc. which wouldn't be that easy and which would be a financial risk, as my husband is having a well paid job here. I hope that our love and our values will have a bigger impact on our children than this awful school system will have - at least I am praying for this! To all the homeschooling parents, BRAVO, and to the people who cant homeschool, you are not alone with your struggling! Lets have faith that God will guide us and our children in this world!!❤
You can homeschool here in the UK. A bit closer to home!
You can homeschool here in the UK, which is a bit closer to home!
@@susieare thank you, didnt know its possible in the UK. Still, its a financial risks in todays hard time (inflation, high prices, etc.). We still have some time left until school time, so maybe something will change...
Belgium allows homeschool as well.
I hope you still found useful information here like reading to your children, having intentional conversations and including them in your daily life. Praying for all families to have the freedom to home educate.
Thank you for this discussion. I am a teacher and I dread getting new students who had previously been homeschooled. Generally speaking, my previously homeschooled kids can't write. They can't write a cohesive paragraph, nor even much of a sentence. They usually read pretty well, but only things they are interested in reading. Oh, and their penmanship is atrocious. I'm sure it can be done well, and I had a student once who had been homeschooled and was way ahead of the other students in the class.
My prayer is that homeschooling and co-ops continue to improve and we can get as many kids as possible out of our country's dangerous public school system.
So thankful for this podcast 🥰💙 I feel more self-empowered as a homeschooling mom for 13 years. 🥳
Sarah is great!
I was intimidated by homeschool for a long time. Eventually I dove in, and I'm so glad we decided to do it, and in ways wish I had started sooner.
I LOVE Sarah McKenzie! Thank you for having her!! Just as a note the book that mentioned For The Children’s Sake is the philosophy of Charlotte Mason. I love it so much and I’m so blessed to be able to use it with my children! Also community is a huge part of homeschool so please dear mama seek out for a community or creat your own!!
Cannot get enough of Sarah MacKenzie! I’m a part of her RAR membership, I listen to her podcast, have her books (children’s and otherwise). I could sit at her feet all day and learn. She has been one of the single biggest influences in our homeschool. She offers so much freedom and grace for the homeschooling mother. Thanks for this interview!
I absolutely love this episode! I just love Sarah Mackenzie! Her books are amazing! I love love love how y'all talked about dyslexia and reading in the homeschool community! That was so powerful!
Going into my 7th year of homeschooling! I love it so much and read aloud revival & "Teaching from Rest" have made a big impact on how we do it!
Thanks for spreading awareness about homeschooling, Lila! More please!
Of course 🧡
Welcome back Lila, and welcome to Sarah Mackenize's wisdom! Was happy to see this Homeschool primer podcast pop up on my phone in the morning! Hope you and your family are literally and figuratively staying cool this summer!
So excited for this discussion! In the face of terrible stats of mentally crumbling young people - homeschooling done well creates healthy families and young people. Sarah was a huge encouragement to me when we started our homeschooling journey over a decade ago. 📖 + time = connection & character!
I LOVE the culture of our home. I love who my kids are.
I reference Read Aloud Revival all the time! Some of our all time favorite books came from her lists (Hank the Cowdog, Green Ember, Poppy series etc.) 😄 If all we do on a typical homeschool day is read our Bible and an amazing, living book…I consider that a win! Can’t wait to listen and glean more from your conversation with Sarah!
My two favorite podcasters in one place! We homeschool, and Sarah has totally influenced our homeschooling. I'm an RAR premium member and it's wonderful! My husband actually is the primary homeschooler and I'm (ironically) a high school teacher. I help quite a bit, especially with reading aloud and teaching reading/writing.
Homeschool mom here. I still enjoyed this so much. Thank you Lila for this.
You should have put in the description SARAH MACKENZIE…she is well known in the homeschool world 😍😄
She is a ray of sunshine! Love her insights 💛
I thought I couldn't homeschool because of my own education. I have bad memories of my public school years with and poor education. I felt the CALL to homeschool and started in January 2019. I told God I didn't know what I was doing and he helped things work out. I felt the hand of God in the work and it became a spiritual experience. Trusting in God and stepping forward was all it took. My oldest is now 11 years and I have a 5 year old and 8 year old all homeschooled. My oldest was the most emotionally challenging. She (after 3 hard years) has had a victorious break through and improvement in behavior and school work. We are all proud of her life lesson she worked through. We didn't give up on her. ✝️ Thank you for this video.
I have been homeschooling for 5 1/2 years.🩷 Thanks to God!
Yes! It doesn't TAKE a special or patient Mom to homeschool, it MAKES a special and patient Mom!
I teach the Orton Gillingham method to dyslexics for free here on UA-cam because I'm dyslexic and so was my oldest daughter and the whole process of being diagnosed and then getting a tutor trained in OG or buying an OG program is so very expensive that it puts reading help out of reach for many parents of dyslexic children.
This is so amazing. I used to think that I could never homeschool but now after having our 1st child, I want to homeschool our daughter but don’t know where or how to start. This interview helped dispel all the myths about homeschooling. Thank you to both ladies for this. It was so encouraging!
I love her. Thanks for having her on. She's been such an encouragement to me the last few years.
Sarah Mackenzie! My favorite human that I don’t actually know!!
Thank you for having Sarah on. She is very inspiring and encouraging.
Im such a fan of Sarah and I'm a premium member. I love Read Aloud Revival!
Homeschool mom of four here and it has been hard but WONDERFUL! ❤️❤️🙌🏻
Thank you for this. I’ve always wanted to homeschool my future kids but didn’t know if I could. This gave me confidence I can, thank you🩵🙏🏼
Sarah Mackenzie & Lila Rose: 2 inspirational women! Love seeing you together! ❤
I needed this podcast so much right now. We are in the middle of a cross-country move and homeschooling is definitely on the back burner for a solid 3 to 4 months. I’m trying my best to do basic basic homeschooling but it’s pretty much a wash at this point until we get officially settled in. Having a mother of six explain her journey reminded me to give myself grace and enjoy the day-to-day life lessons that are happening as part of more of a holistic, homeschooling journey rather than an academic formal homeschooling journey.
Thank you for this! I have been thinking of homeschooling for my kids, but recently I have been feeling very discouraged. I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and new baby and have been so overwhelmed I have been questioning how I could ever also do homeschooling ! This episode gives me so much renewed hope that it all will be okay. I also live in PA which is a heavily regulated state so hopefully she has a podcast episode on that - if not, would love if you had her back on to talk about how to approach homeschooling in states with lots of regulations.
I did feel like homeschooling wasn’t going well in our home as I had 4 of my kids in 2 years, and then older kids I was trying to school. We put them in a private school ten minutes from home and it was the best choice for us, at this time. I love Sarah! She is inspirational and I really think homeschooling is absolutely amazing and homeschool moms are on another level. ❤
This was so, so, so, sooooooo good, validating, reassuring and peaceful to listen to.
Bless you - and THANK YOU.
So glad 🧡
I LOVE SARAH. I read Teaching From Rest every year before we start, and we’re RAR members, it’s fantastic, she’s fantastic.
Yay! So excited for this podcast!!!!!
Wow, two women I admire so much! You have both influenced me in beautiful ways. Thank you for this conversation.
theres a huge difference between catholics and christ-ians, thats all ima say but i loved this and it made me more excited for homeschooling, love them both!!
Great interview I shared on Facebook 💖 I would totally switch to Seven Weeks coffee if I could. I'm a SAHM and my husband is literally at octopharma plasma right now. He does plasma so we can continue to live in our tiny house that we love so much. He works full time and picks up every hour ans shift he possibly can. He would work 80 hrs a week if they let him. Times are so tough but I Matthew 6:33 so I know everything is ok. And I know it sounds weird because we can barley pay our bills .... But I feel like I live in abundance. I really do. God is so GOOD 💖🙏💖
Love SM so much! Her interview on Pints convinced me I could homeschool after being on the fence for years. She’s so encouraging.
I love the analogy about planting a seed
This is by far my favorite episode!
I can listen to this conversation all day ❤
I love RAR! Sarah Mackenzie has been a huge help in my homeschool journey! 9 years of homeschooling and going strong!
This was so encouraging to me. Bring what you have and God makes it enough. There is time and room to grow. Thank you ❤️
Just finished her books.
Her perspective is life giving.
I love the chat regarding sex education I went to a normal public high school and we had to put condoms on a wooden penis in groups ! 😮 as a young girl about 16 doing this in front of other 16 year old boys was mortifying !
Thank you so much for this episode. Sarah spoke to my fears. It will never seem like I am doing enough. Yet, it will be enough.
I needed to hear this!!!
So beautiful this was wonderful 🥹❤️💕🙏🏻 blessings to you both!
I just ordered from we heart nutrition! I'm excited!😎 Thanks for the code for savings 😌
Awesome talk! Thank you!
This is so good Lila thank you! I'm feeling so inspired and finally like I can do this 🙏
I've enjoyed hearing this perspective. One note: schools 50 years ago definitely did start at age 5-6 and were not primarily oral and not at all like Little House on the Prairie. 50 years ago was 1974. ❤
This is what I wanted to hear! I have twin new born babies and 2 other older kids. Thank you!
I am pregnant with 6&7, a Christian mom here! I work a full time job and homeschool. It’s challenging but totally worth every second!
Her book is one of the best and most inspiring I've ever read!
Thanks so much for talking about this topic, I have a baby and a toddler and am considering homeschooling but didn’t know where to start as I wasn’t homeschooled or came from a country where that was legal.
Lol my husband was also not on board 😂 said he knew a guy who was homeschooled and was weird and socially awkward. We are 4 years in and loves that we homeschool 😊❤
This was great! Thanks!
We used Acellus Academy online for HS. the colleges were impressed. My daughter did incredibly well.
Thank you so much!!!!
She is so happy & smiley!! 🤩 she seems awesome!!
This was SO, SO beautiful! I especially loved the analogy of you doing your best and Jesus filing in the gaps and making it enough. That was incessantly powerful and helpful as a mom who struggles often with not feeling like ‘enough.’ It was also nice to hear most homeschool moms think that so I know I’m not alone! Haha 😅
I homeschooled through HS and my hubby did as well. We homeschool now and I do love spending time with our kiddos and not having to ‘be’ at school at all certain time etc. I still get on the struggle bus and feel inadequate on mnau levels. 🤪 I’m grateful for Jesus and His grace and wisdom from Him and my husband on how best to school our kiddos. We do a lot of park trips where the kids get to do a lot of exploring and looking at interesting bugs etc. And we recently went blueberry picking and it was a fun enjoyable outing for us to do as a family. Things like this you couldn’t always do as a public or private school family. I think what she said was very important-how you’re going to give up something either way. And you have to weigh what you’re willing to risk giving up. Spending time with your kids is never wasted. ❤
She is so encouraging ❤
Very inspiring practical and informative thank you !
Starting to homeschool in the fall with the Alberta Center for Learning. Can’t wait.
This makes me excited about homeschooling
This is just a thought. I wonder if it would be possible to find somebody who would be able to talk about homeschooling children with special needs… Say children with intellectual disabilities, autism, or blind children… Having to teach blind children Braille for example. also, I wonder if there are disabled parents out there who do homeschool their children? Particularly if their children are able body? Thinking particularly about if there are any blind parents out the homeschooling. I'm blind myself, but I don't know any. I don't actually know many blind people generally. But it's something I got thinking about as I listen to this podcast. Because honestly, I wish that I had had this lady teaching me when I was at school. I think I would have learnt a lot easier and a lot better, because of her approach, her compassion, and the fact that she is so big on actually being read aloud to.
I started homeschooling and we live in a very affluent area with the BEST schools in our area. House prices are through the roof and people come to move here to make sure they are in the school district. With that being said I pull my son mid year 2nd grade. And I had a conversation with the principal before I did and she said but these are the best schools in the area I said oh I know I’m not debating that. I want a better quality of life with my kids and be able to teach them specific things also he was getting out at like 4 PM getting home around 430. And by the end of the call the principal was like well my best friend homeschools so I get it and in another life I would homeschool too. So I feel like a lot of people want to try it it is more of people feeling inadequate when they are more than capable. I also feel like that for some it is really tough to break free from the sociatle norm.
I’m starting to homeschool with my 5year old, I have a 4 yo and a 1 yo and hoping to have more babies if it’s the Lord’s will. I love listening to this, it gives me hope that I can do it and strength the persevere
I want to homeschool but I’m afraid I’m not smart enough to give my son a good education.
Our most important job as a homecoming parent is to plant the desire to learn. Then we can learn along with them! One of the gifts of homeschooling for me is the re-education I’m getting. The world is becoming more rich and beautiful for our family and it’s not because I came in knowing it all❤
There are so many resources plus you’re not teaching rocket science !
I’m sure you are just as smart, if not smarter, than the majority of teachers in brick and mortar schools! 😉
@@StephanieBennionyes! I love learning along side my kids!
If you don't feel like the public school gave you a good enough education, don't trust them with your kids education. You can teach them and anything you don't already know you will learn faster than them and will help them walk through it.
Love Sarah Mackenzie! 🥰
Love! Love! Love!❤
