i think the thing that really makes the emotional scenes of one piece hit different is how realistic the crying is and how it feels more "raw" than "cute/pretty/badass". something about the scrunched up faces, puffy eyes, nose drippings, and voice cracks just really makes the crying hit way harder than any other emotional scenes i've seen in animation. there's something about how the crying in this show just feels so much more... vulnerable. it makes you really understand and realize these guys are DEVASTATED to lose such a close friend.
You hit the nail on the head! I especially love it since the character designs are so “cartoony”, but their emotional reactions always look and feel so human! I’m watching this scene, and it’s pulling at my heart strings still!😢 I can only think of a few other anime that can hit me in the feels the same way One Piece can.
Yeah, the amount of tears might still be over the top, in some cases, but the expressions they make are very real

Water 7 was an emotionally rough arc. Pain, betrayal, worried the crew is going to break up, that they're not strong enough... and it's why it's a fan favorite.

I've been watching One Piece with my fiancé the past few months and she cries just about every few episodes, being a bit emotional. We're very nearly at this episode and I can just imagine how it's going to turn out, bless her.

I've got to hand it to the voice of Luffy. They are amazing at conveying luffy emotions in every line he speaks. From the gleeful exuberance to his downright heart wrenching crys, Luffy crying at Ace's death still wrecks me to this day.
Let's be honest, when the merry was burning, some of us held our breaths. Others probably shed a tear or two. But when he said "I'm sorry..." that was the moment we all cried for real.
Magnificent scene, merry isn't just a ship, he was a part of the crew.
I never ever, EVER cried before over something on the internet. Even the titanic.

Since the one piece live action, I’ve been rewatching the show. And everytime I thought about this scene, I teared up, especially during water 7! So lo and behold, me, a emotionless 20 year old man, is bawling his eyes out at this episode right now. 😭

You know it’s a good anime when it makes you cry over a ship. Really shows you how impactful all of the characters are, even the ones that can only help the protagonist and his friends to their final destination.
Help? This was their home, and a gift. I also feel like this was harder for Usopp than anyone else since it was Kaya's, a dear friend of his.

Wow. Mayumi Tanaka nailed the voice acting here. The first time I saw this I thought I would be able to hold back my tears. But boy, was I wrong. I cried like a five year old during that episode. Even years later. RIP Going Merry. You will be missed.
I remember crying my eyes out everytime Klabautermann/Merry was talking. This scene is still one of my all time favorites. All the memories... 😢😢

This scene right here INGRAINED into my soul. I legit think this was the first time I've ever gotten a piece of media to draw actual tears out of me. One Piece is truly a magical series that changes you.
This scene alone is the reason why I stopped reading One Piece. Not because I disliked it, far from it, but because I was so broken by this fellow crew member dying that I felt like I needed a break. But then life happened and the break got so long that now I would need to go back and reread it all from the start, but the thought of having to go through this scene again still holds me back. I truly miss One Piece :(

Here, Luffy turned back into that kid who was always crying on Dawn Island. I don't remember seeing Luffy crying this much until this scene. At this point, Luffy hadn't really lost anyone except for Sabo, so this was rough for him. And then the next major loss would happen, which was a big gut punch.

This scene really made me break down in tears. The Going Merry was part of their crew and the straw hats really lost a true friend, but she will never be forgotten
From an outsider perspective, yes, you are crying over a ship, a construction of wood. But if you're a true One Piece fan, you'll know Merry was more than just a "ship". Merry had been with the crew through thick and thin, it was part of them. Merry's death is the same as losing someone close to you, and deep down, you know that. That is the reason why we cry in this scene.
Water 7 is the reason I started one piece. This + that robin scene never fails to make me emotional
I have seen this scene for almost fifteen years, and I've always cried just like the first time
It's been more then 5 years since the time I watched this scene for the first time and to this day I still cry every time I watch it again.

Never in my life i thought i would cry for a ship. But i cried not once or twice, but a few dozens. And it was always with this scene.
To everyone who didn't understand what happened:
The ship was inhabited by a spirit called :
" Klabautermann ", this spirit appeared on the island of heaven
According to One Piece Wiki, “A Klabautermann is said to be a water spirit (or fairy) that dwells on ships and is basically an incarnation of a ship that has been well cared for.”
Also the spirit of the Klabautermann will only make itself known if the ship it inhabits is doomed

@@aliddda328 Yeah that is right, here its being depicted as the manifestation of the Merry, but in the case of the lore of Klabautermann & it's appearance on Skypiea, they're supposed to be a separate entity.

They say a ship is what makes a crew and losing a ship is like losing a part of you. We all knew from the start Luffy cared so dearly for merry but as a captain he can’t let his emotions take the best of him so this scene makes it 10x sadder i
People say one peice is known for its amazing animation or length as a series but the fans know way to well that the real answer is how sad they make every damn death in this anime im still reeling from aces death and were multiple arcs later in the series

When Merry’s spirit started talking that’s when it really hurt
This was literally my favorite episode in the entire anime until 1015 dropped. Eisaku Inoue's art corrections, Katsumi Tokoro's incredible direction, and just everything in this episode was perfect. I own a copy of volume 44 (which includes the chapter in which this happened), and while Oda really hit hard in that chapter, the anime completely outdid him here.
Cast Away made me cry over a Volleyball.

It’s so weird what fictional stories can do to you emotionally.
The Going Merry is not just a ship its family , the Going Merry's soul will always live on trough the thousand sunny, Going Merry we all are truly thank you for what you done.
How is it possible that this one scene still makes me cry? After all this time. I’ve seen it so many times and it still does. One of the most, if not the most resonant scenes in anime. The only other scene I can think of in recent memory that still brings strong emotions no matter how many times I watch it is when the Clovers show up to defend Finral from his brother in Black Clover.
Above all else, I feel so bad for Usopp here. Because of his falling out with Luffy, he's there as Sniper King. So he has to do his best to not falter (even though he has a river of tears flooding out from under the mask). Plus you have Luffy's line about Usopp having to fix Merry whenever he, Zoro, and Sanji damaged the ship.

This wasn't some side character or something like that, this was the straw hat's ship, a part of their crew. The death of the Mary deserved nothing less than this.

My best friend died the day after this episode aired in a car crash along with his girlfriend who was 8 weeks pregnant and we watched this episode together as we did with every other one piece episode leading upto this one! Whenever i see this it makes me sad,angry,depressed and yet thankful for all the memories i got to spend with him and his wonderful girfriend! Hope you are still watching alex and Sara along with your child forever missed.
