See, I run a ranch with 8 horses and it took me a bit to get my own cowboy hat. However, once I was wearing it in the sun, cleaning shit, sitting on the tractor, cutting brush and training in the beating sun..... it's become both a needed part of my daily sun gear and a central part of "fuck the city, I'm never going back" as well.

In 1986 (or '87) my college girlfriend bought me a hat. An Akubra Snowy River. I live in the northeastern United States. That hat has seen sun, wind, rain, snow, sleet, etc. It is now 35 years later and I still wear the hat. I haven't seen that girlfriend in almost 30 years but my hat still has its place in my regular hat rotation.

I have a size 63 head, I have struggled my whole life finding hats that actually fit. In my quest to find a hat that actually fits I stumbled upon a Canadian company called Tilley whose hats go all the way up to size 64 or 65! needless to say I was excited but still felt a little unsure because all of their "plus size" hats are the full brimmed bucket style hats and I've never worn something like that before i wasn't sure if i could "pull it off". I said screw it and bought that hat, and you know what, I don't even care if i look goofy because of all the damn shade, these hats are so practical!

Wife bought me a tilley last summer because her dad has had them his whole life, and I just finished a week of camping and hiking around the cascade mountains. Totally worth it for the cost, doesn't cook my head, stank pretty bad after being shoved in my suitcase of dirty clothes so I just washed it with a brush in the sink and it's hang drying now looking almost new again.

I have a big noggin too and I also started hat journey with a Tilley. I also wanted a straw hat so I found Sunbody hats in Tx. They have plenty hats that go 63 and 64. I picked up two straw hats from them over time, a 4 in" brimmed sun hat and a more stylish 2-3/4 brimmed fedor that I wear all the time. I then stumbled onto Akubra and a quicly picked up a Banjo Patterson which is in Heratige fawn, a lovely color. Next hat is another Akubra but this time in black and a slightly different style such as the Adventurer. Having a big head or wide feet is a big PITA but with persistance you can find what you need.

I have three (different colours) of Akubra's "classic" *fedora* .... and tonight it got blown right off my head into the river (Swan River, Perth, WA).
I took it home as soon as I could and gave it a wash and used a hair-dryer to get it dry again [obviously].
Not only did my hat stay just fine, but it *even kept its form* [a traditional Fedora 'bash' that I had given it by using the steam from a kettle].
I'm unbelievably impressed that it kept its shape and that I didn't have to redo it (using the kettle again) to keep the style I like.
There's something magical about Akubra hats....

RIP Snowy River. Congrats on the new hat. Enjoy. In 1998 I picked up a hat similar to the Territory/Riverina. It was named after a mob tian range in a mining area in Souther Australia I recall. The town was like the Territory 4+" high with a a 4" brim. Three vent holes. A durable hat, hasn't been abused, except for oil from an oil lamp soak in it. Sent to a hat shop, they cleaned it and shrunk it to size 59. I'm forever stretching it. Also picked up a Bushman in 2020. Open crown so it's flexible but rugged. I wear it with the brim down and my wife prefers the brims being down.

Nice choice, that's my favourite model. If someone tries to cast shade on your fashion choice you can just cast your actual shade right back on them like a fear of god inducing astronomical event. You could have also gone for the equally wide Territory model with bigger vents and colourway to match the SA dust bowl aesthetic and reflect 1% more heat energy back to space, rather than climate change denial dark brown designed to absorb every fleeting dapple of warmth filtering through the snowgums in the high country while driving brumbies as we do, or aspire to, or at least driving a 1987 Subaru Brumby as I aspire to. But all that is entry level sun protection anyway, I'm blowing all the way past broad brimmed hats now and have been getting into the sun umbrella scene, culture, community. Sun umbrellas make big hat wearers look like classy nightclub patrons, we are talking astronaut levels of other worldliness, like you live on a whole other planet so irradiated and hostile to human life that no concession to style could ever be considered, materials and structures as advanced as the unfolding James Webb telescope.

And other hat makers have the gall to call their 8cm brims "wide brim". 9 and up only for me.
Problem with akubras is the heat stroke they give my skull in summer, I can only wear it in winter. Newcastle Hats Nullabor breeze mesh is the best summer alternative.

I appreciate your sentiment: F the city; F the sun. I got my sun hats on sale at a hardware store. They're big-brimmed utilitarian and floppy, made of a synthetic canvas-esque material. They have a mesh vent beneath the top for head-steam to escape. F the sun: F the city.

Looking at this exact same hat. I have an Akubra slouch hat that I wear brim down, ribbon band, and no insignia. I have a big outdoor project coming up. Let it rip. Very entertaining.

I like synthetic hats. That is a nice sombrero though. I have a few outdoor research sun/rain hats. US military (and probably other countries) style boonie hats are solid too. If you spend a decent amount of time outside you definitely want to keep limit your sun exposure. I'm an old guy that learned that from old guys back in the day.

When the hat is so beat that it looks like it was owned by Jed Clampett is when the real authentic you begins to show. Then you can wear it with pride cuz there are some real interesting life stories to be reminded of every time you don your chapeau. Well doggie!!

Outstanding Pete! I think Akubra’s ‘Territory’ is similarly huge? I have the Akubra ‘Coorong’ because my stupid previous employer baulked at supplying me with the Riverina. Also…beat you by one size in the giant noggin stakes - I’m rockin’ a 61! Thanks for another great video, and screw the non-hatters.

I have a pile of them but my two favorites are the Australian Aruba Territory and the Texas made Bailey Cavalry II. Im telling you now, ive wore my Acubra Territory in the City abmnd strangers have come up and complimented me on it!

Love the hats mate. If you take your felt hat on and off by the brim and not but pinching the crown, it will last a lot longer and not blow through the point on the front.

I have a green cotton fabric, large floppy full brimmed hat, with stretchy one size fits all fitment, and vented sides. I find it very nice for the same reasons you like your hats, sans the water proofness. I'm sure I look like a dorky old guy wearing it at 44yo but I don't care, its to good of a sunburn protector and make shift sweat band. Your hat looks pretty cool in my opinion, but I'm not sure I could pull it off. I have to take into consiteration my rather large full beard.

Pete, you wear it well. Personally, I can't do the massive brim that you rock. But I live in a range of blue bucket hats that probably make me look like some sort of middle aged derelict. As some others have commented, having skin cancers cut out of your face does tend to turn you into a compulsive hat wearer.

Twenty-five or so years ago, as the dermatologist was removing a pre-cancerous lesion from the top of my ear, he told me to ditch the baseball caps and start wearing wide brimmed hats if I wanted to keep my ears. I have been wearing brimmed hats ever since. My favorite style is a fedora with a 2 1/2” brim, but my favorite hat is an Akubra Banjo Paterson. Akubra makes great hats! Here in Texas, most men wear either baseball caps or cowboy hats, so my fedoras stand out in the crowd, but I’m too old to care. If you like it, wear it and don’t worry what others think.
When you take a hat off by pinching at the crown, it does 2 things to the hat. First, it distorts the the front of the hat and changes the shape of the bash. Second it weakens the material and eventually causes a hole. This is especially true on straw hats as pinching the front cracks the straw rather quickly. The proper way to remove a hat is to grasp it by the brim, close to the hatband, and lift the hat off your head. However, that twisted bash at the front does give the hat a little character.
