I'm from Venezuela and for some reason a news outlet in here actually thought the Optimus Canon figure was an actual camera that worked and transformed instead of a toy xDDD
I never realised that there are people now whom are nostalgic about, from my view, new Transformer toys. I am an ‘80s kid and grew up with the old Transformers. Still love them to this day. Keep up collecting your childhood man!
the original Refraktor lineup was absolutely insane! and some of the third party versions of them are even more insane with how closely they can resemble an actual camera. I believe Masterpiece and then Perfect Effects has two varieties. one with all three different colors and then a second, more inconspicuous design where they're all the same color so the entire camera design looks nearly flawless. if you get a chance and haven't gotten your hands on it yet, I highly recommend those versions of the Refraktor/Reflektor lineup. Also, not to be that guy, but if I recall correctly the Refraktor toy was based around a concept from one of the earlier transformers shows (I think either Armada or even the OG english series). three decepticon triplets who turned into a human-sized camera, much in the same way that Soundwave turned into a boombox, and used for surveillance or covert assassination (the camera portion fired a laser if memory serves correctly).
Refraktor as we know him (the purple camera bot) is just how he appeared in the G1 cartoon. He was normally seen in a group of 3 or more. Though the intention was there was only a single individual who just could create copies of himself, but every scene that was meant to show that got deleted. He was often used by other Decepticons to spy on the autobots. The one where they are different colors was closer to what the toy looked like.

I want a transformer that is functional. I'll bet it's possible with how small our tech is getting. The radio transformer, build a simple am/fm radio, a tiny speaker and an audio out so you could hook it up to better speakers, then for a camera just a tiny phone sized camera, a button for pics and an mico SD card slot- could probably even work in a tiny preview screen. And they could really upcharge for building in those features. And if they need to, they could make them a bit larger than normal to fit the tech in. I might just know what a future hobby project is going to be! Mod a transformer and make it functional- or maybe just design my own knockoff that works! Nifty collection, I didn't know these guys existed :D
The reason people expected the Prime Camera to 'work' was because it looked like it was going to be in the same line as the functional gear items like the Mp3 Soundwave/blaster, the mouse Grimlock/Tripticon and USB stick Ravage. More so with that price. P.s. The MP3 Soundblaster is still one of my favorite figures I own even if the mp3 part no longer works.

I have the G1 you color of the Siege Reflectors, and it's an awesome set to me. I've only got one of the normal Siege Reflector, but I plan to change that later.
Transformers Legacy Photon when?? Also, I love your lore for Photon!! I was actually planning on remaking some of the real-gear characters since nothing has been done with them for so long now, and making them kinda my own... I was thinking about how I'd do Photon and I saw your video, and I think I'm gonna take inspiration from your ideas, if you don't mind!
I remember the original run of Reflector from the 80's that was a mail-away-only, three figure set... even as a 6 year old, I recognized the marketing gimmick of combining multiple bots, and thought it was a lot of money for a "minion" character... lol...
I'm fairly confident that given how small digital cameras can be, it would actually be possible to make camera Optimus be a working camera. Not a good one, and it would increase his already high price, and possibly further compromise his transformation, but it seems doable. Music label Soundwave is a working MP3 player and he came out YEARS before camera Optimus, so what's this guys excuse?
This guy’s excuse is literally everything you just listed lol. Nobody would buy this if it was a $350 crappy camera. It’s also kinda unhinged to compare digital camera tech to a basic MP3 player 😂
God Im old. Watching this the entire time thinking "look how they massacred my boy." Reflector the Combiner that this gray and purple lump is based on had a lot more charm. Admittedly they were much simpler, but at least they all got their own armor color and head sculpts. (AND THEIR OWN FUCKIN NAMES)
One thing i never understood is, how do you display Transformers toys: robot or alt mode? What's the point of a "transformer" if the only thing you ever get to see is one mode? And if you DO occasionally change the display, then you are most def playing with your toys lol
kinda reminds me of something that star wars figures had 20 ish years ago.. where you would buy 1 figure and get a random piece of a droid with it, so you had to buy multiple figures to get all the parts to build a droid that dint get sold seperate
i always loved those transformer concepts of instead of vehicles its everyday items like phones, cameras, camcorders or the occasional gun ala megatron
let's be honest with how small tech has gotten these days, you could probably make a working transformers camera, would be expensive, but it's possible
"Gather around everyone!" Everyone gets into their "Freeze frame pose" "Say Cheese!!" Everyone says cheese transform the camera into toy walk off and play with the toy like your going on an adventure.
Hey Paper Melon I was looking into starting to collect transformer figurines, but I don't have heaps of money to spend on them. I was just asking if maybe you could give me some advice on which line of transformers have the best quality for a more limited budget.
What kind of transformers characters do you prefer the look of? Do you know what the difference is between G1 style and the movie style? Lmk and I’ll see if I can help give some thoughts :)
@@papermelon I prefer the G1 more cartoony style, over the more organic looking live-action Michael Bay movie style. I also would like to pose my collected Transformers.
@@papermelon I have an allowance of $10 per week (AUD), but I plan on getting my first job soon when the exams calm down. My personal favourite character is soundwave.
@@LlewieWilson Gotcha. I would recommend any figures from the last 3 Generations lines. Generations are G1 styled figures, and they're basically the most affordable way to start your collection. As for Soundwave, I think this is the best affordable option to get the character, and he's an awesome figure. He doesn't turn into a boombox (instead he turns into a cybertronian "ship"), but WOW he looks awesome in robot mode, and then you can start collecting his mini cassette bots that go into his chest (because who wouldn't want that??): a.co/d/7V9cn98 You should be able to get this guy after a month or two with your specified allowance. From there, any figures you get from the Transformers toylines "Legacy", "Legacy Evolution", "Siege" or "earthrise" will scale perfectly with that figure. And they'll look great together. They're sold in stores and Amazon too, so most are really easy to buy whenever you feel like it. For more of these type of figures (and any other affordable Transformers that would scale well/match the style of that Soundwave figure), I'd recommend these general searches on Amazon to shop around: Transformers Generations Transformers Studio Series 86 Transformers Legacy Transformers Siege Transformers Earthrise Hope this helps!
I fucking loved my old Zoom Out and Photon figures. I had a tonne of those every day object figures. Think it was just the handheld console I didn’t have out of that line
I don't have e that refraktor, I started collecting towards end of earthrise and couldn't find any. I then found the netflix version and then found the one you don't like which is the best version, even the packaging is awsome. It is not actually trying too hard as he is infact based on his original toy design. Hope that helped and if you love ya camera that much then getting that version in hand will change your opinion
We had Soundwave as a functioning MP3 player, Prime as a functioning iPad dock, Rumble and Frenzy as functioning earphones, Ravage as a functioning USB drive and Trypticon as a functioning mouse... but yet we can't do any of this with a camera.
Those are all from the same toyline 16 years ago lol, and not at all the same level of tech as a functioning camera. Some people are impossible to please 🤦♂️.

Why would the Canon-mold be impossible to have engineered with space for a working digital camera? Cameras are tiny, and if the big deal is that it exists at all, rather than being useful, it can be _really_ small since you can probably skimp on things like batteries. Remember, Barbie had a digital camera. She actually had the first sub-$100 digital camera way back when, but I'm talking about the Barbie doll that was molded with a camera on her that actually worked. Barbie had a kinda ridiculous high-tech story arc a while back, including having one doll that was essentially an Amazon Echo. But, that's neither here nor there. Point is, this 1:1 Canon handheld could have been a shitty working digital camera without really doing anything new in terms of technology. Hell, with the right engineering someone could produce a Real Gear working laptop that transforms and runs Linux, if not Windows 11. The only utterly impossible tech would be making a working tablet that transforms like that one Chinese version of Soundwave. Edit: Speaking of Real Gear engineering, my personal favorite toy in the line was Meantime, the digital watch. I have to wonder if that toy was originally intended to be a working watch, as it's apparently incredibly easy to remove the fake watch body and replace it with a cheap watch. Jin Saotome of Jin's Dangerous Toys did a couple of custom Meantimes right after it was released. It left me wanting to do a whole line of customs, one with a classic Casio G-shock, one with a mechanical watch done in a classy/possibly steampunk style, and one with a working smart watch replacing the fake watch (Named Screentime, natch.)
It doesn't really matter if they "could" fit a digital camera inside, nobody would buy it because it would cost hundreds of dollars, and everyone would just complain that Hasbro/Takara has gotten unreasonable with their prices. Not to mention it would come out and people would complain again because it's a bad camera and we have pretty high standards for portable cameras these days. so it's a lose/lose for them lol. Just after making this video I remembered that I used to have meantime! But I lost him when I was younger, so I just got a brand new one off of ebay and it arrived yesterday! What a cool looking bot, I love that toy line. That's super interesting that people did customs with it, I'm definitely looking into that lol.

@@papermelon in your short about the voyager class Primal and I asked you how to get the one and you said it was horribly stocked and you said that it would be a good idea to just buy the leader class one
Dude I had the same backstory for Photon T34- he was a Decepticon turned Autobot that helped spy on teh Decepticons. Also, mine was grey instead of black
😂😂 I love that! If I remember right, I think photon T34 is a repaint of your original grey version. So it looks like you have the first!
I loved all of the real gear robots I had both the camera and camcorder and the gaming system one.
The Canon Transformer needs Potassium. 🤓
The cannon one is insane looks just like mine
I have the Photon T34 one, and when I was younger I would bring him around where ever I went for a while until I got bored of doing that, I guess.
At least refractor was made up of three cons in G1 as well so it makes sense
I have the G1 you color of the Siege Reflectors, and it's an awesome set to me. I've only got one of the normal Siege Reflector, but I plan to change that later.
Refractor was originally from g1 You line. Your 2019 Cybertron version is quite cool
Go for it
THE LEGS CLICK IN PLACE?!?!
I know right?? Just figured that out in time for filming this video 😭😭😭
Well if his lens doesn’t zoom…. He’s got to be a …..

Prime. 🎉
👏👏👏
@@papermelon 😉
I had the zoom out 25x one as a kid and loved it
I remember having a transformer that was a cassette tape I was wondering where could I find one and what the wave was called
I love that optimus comes with his own tiny little camera
No love for the bright orange Laserbeak handheld camcorder? Or the original mail in Reflector trio?
The original G1 refractor actually did transform into 3 seperate robots so the 2019 version is groovy for that reason alone.
You need to add the g1 reflector to this line up.
I loved them as a kid.
As someone who genuinely wants to go into photography more that Optimus Prime is freaking awesome since he turns into a really cool famera
let's be honest with how small tech has gotten these days, you could probably make a working transformers camera, would be expensive, but it's possible
It’s possible, but not reasonable. Everyone would just be upset at how much it would cost lol.
Wow, the real gear shiw case unlocked some memories, jeez
"Gather around everyone!"
Everyone gets into their "Freeze frame pose"
"Say Cheese!!"
Everyone says cheese
transform the camera into toy
walk off and play with the toy like your going on an adventure.
Cool spidey suit
Have you checked out the yolopark figures? Their really articulated, and accurate
This server is very cool
We need more extremely realistic Reflector toys.
Damn… I thought my dad jokes were bad 😆 haha great video dude 👏
Such a nice video and review!
@@LlewieWilson okay. What is your typical budget per month or week if you had to guess? And do you have any favorite G1 characters?
@@papermelon I have an allowance of $10 per week (AUD), but I plan on getting my first job soon when the exams calm down. My personal favourite character is soundwave.
@@LlewieWilson Gotcha. I would recommend any figures from the last 3 Generations lines. Generations are G1 styled figures, and they're basically the most affordable way to start your collection.
As for Soundwave, I think this is the best affordable option to get the character, and he's an awesome figure. He doesn't turn into a boombox (instead he turns into a cybertronian "ship"), but WOW he looks awesome in robot mode, and then you can start collecting his mini cassette bots that go into his chest (because who wouldn't want that??): a.co/d/7V9cn98
You should be able to get this guy after a month or two with your specified allowance.
From there, any figures you get from the Transformers toylines "Legacy", "Legacy Evolution", "Siege" or "earthrise" will scale perfectly with that figure. And they'll look great together. They're sold in stores and Amazon too, so most are really easy to buy whenever you feel like it.
For more of these type of figures (and any other affordable Transformers that would scale well/match the style of that Soundwave figure), I'd recommend these general searches on Amazon to shop around:
Transformers Generations
Transformers Studio Series 86
Transformers Legacy
Transformers Siege
Transformers Earthrise
Hope this helps!
I guess a zoom lens for the R5 is a bit more immediately recognisable, but it should have been an (Optimus) Prime lens ;-)
I fucking loved my old Zoom Out and Photon figures. I had a tonne of those every day object figures. Think it was just the handheld console I didn’t have out of that line
I HAD THOSE 2007 ONES, I had the grey/silver version of the photon T34!
I don't have e that refraktor, I started collecting towards end of earthrise and couldn't find any. I then found the netflix version and then found the one you don't like which is the best version, even the packaging is awsome. It is not actually trying too hard as he is infact based on his original toy design. Hope that helped and if you love ya camera that much then getting that version in hand will change your opinion
holy shit this was a nostalgia trip
Refraktor was always a trio to be a camera.
I think I just fell in love.
I got the delorean and ghosbuster car transformers and I LOVE them, might pick up the jurassic park jeep one with the Dennis Nedry design as a robot.
Skipped the other jurassic park, top gun and gi joe ones.
Would love a A-team, knightrider, turtle car lol
loving the collab ones though, even if i dont buy them. Great ideas.
Just following up, you might be interested to know that I got my Jurassic park Dennis Nedry collaboration set in the mail yesterday, and it’s easily my favorite collaborative Tf set ever lol. It turned out super fun. I’d highly recommend it if you haven’t gone for it yet.
@@papermelon great info I'll probably end up getting it.
Also seen the new Gi Joe soundwave figure, which made me sad that the line comes with that much kibble. No Joe for me.
@@transformerstuff7029 Yeah, hasbro has massively failed with all of their Gi Joe collabs for me. the new bumblebee is one of the worst figures I've ever bought, and that's saying something lol. I bought him on a steep discount and still regret it. Soundwave looks a little cooler, but I can already tell he's an oversized, hollow, poorly painted joke just like Gi Joe Megatron.
So it's nice to see some of their collaborations get it right (Jurassic Park)
@@papermelon " I bought him on a steep discount and still regret it. "
LMAO I thought about it but decided I am wasting enough space on figures I kinda dislike.........oh how about the x-men blackbird thing?! Any thoughts on that? I hear its kinda wonky, which put me off from getting it.
But I was born in 86, so x-men is totally my jam hahaha
@@transformerstuff7029 I don't have that crossover, but I've considered it. He looks pretty solid. If you're a sucker for X-Men I'd say you've gotta go for it. Let me know how it is if you do!
Bro you need more subscribers
Bro you should do a whole video on the real gear robots and other transformers that look like real stuff
Hey! I have both of those 2007 camera bots!
THERAPIST: Camera prime doesn't exist it can't hurt you.
Refraktor is atually 'way' cool. I'm confident someone's already mentioned this, but the 'earth mode' version is a head nod to the original 1983 'Reflector' 'Microchange' Transformer from G1 (first appearance, Season 1). Cool! Great vids, man - new Subscriber. Cheers!
\m/, (*o*) ,\m/
refract-or was one of the first transformers from the first tv series in the early 80's. the even made a toy with the camera as 3 pieces in the same package i got it when i was a kid
Good video
Surprised you didnt mention Armada Laserbeak which also turns into a camera.
Thank you for acknowledging millennials trying to pretend to be boomers
Jesus Christ finally someone who isn't braindead and actually got the joke in these comments lol. Bless you.
Man that clip "yeah and I listen to music on an fbi" tore me up, if possible could you comment the link to it plz
"these might be older then some of you guys watching"
Pain.
Cool.
I actually almost bought Photon T34 with my allowance as a kid, I kind of regret it, but then again he would have been in goodwill by now
Can you make a video like this but with other household items?
