    “Let it go and it will come back into your life”. Amazing story and great advice!

    Think about this for a moment. You would have never been united with your shoes unless another person chose to declutter them. To me that is so powerful. We always hope that someone will be blessed by things that we no longer need and your story is a shining example of that. I will think of this now when I'm debating over an item. There's likely someone out there searching high and low for it. Let it go. If you find you really need it, you will eventually find another.

    Laura this did happen to me. I was flipping through the paperbacks in a second hand book shop in Barking when I spotted a copy of Night Probe by Clive Cussler. Remembering that I hadn’t been able to find my copy at home I bought it. You can imagine my surprise when I opened it and saw my name inside . Turned out my brother (always in need of cash) had cleared out a load of books and sold them… I have never let him forget this.xx😂

    I can't believe you found the shoes! 🎉 I regretted letting something go that I gave up 25 years ago. I had kept every concert ticket I went to when I was younger. (I'm 61 years now) There were some amazing tickets, including Elvis, Stevie, Ray Vaughan, so many people that have passed away. About 10 years ago I went looking for those tickets so I could make a piece of art with them. Then I remembered I had thrown them away. Trying to make room in a scrapbook for my daughter, who was around 5 at the time. I was so crushed. As I get older, it's hard for me to remember all the great bands and performers I have seen. Your video reminded me of the need for me to work through my regret. Fast forward to now, although I would have enjoyed the ticket art, it would have just been one more thing that my daughter would have had to deal with when I'm gone. They would have been cool, but not likely something she would want to display on her wall. Most likely something she would feel obligated to keep. The tickets have rotted in a landfill long ago, nothing I will ever find in a thrift store to replace them. My only solace is that since I employ some of the swedish death cleaning techniques, it's just one less thing for my daughter to deal with when I am gone. 🙏

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  Рік тому +1

      If you're anything like me, even if you'd kept them those tickets would probably still be sitting there gathering dust. Sounds like you got some great memories out of those concerts though!

    Similar story:
    I was studying and at the time did not have that much extra money. One day I saw a small dresser, hand painted one, in a furniture store that I loved but it was 450€ that I didn’t have as extra at that time. It was still mass produced so they were selling those dressers for a year or so. Every time I passed the store I popped in to admire it. I even cut it out of their add and clued in my notebook. That was late 90’s.
    5-6 years later I was in a Thrift Shop and I saw the dresser, not cheap but 100€. That happened over 10 years ago, it’s still my favourite piece at my home and every time someone sees it for the first time they ask where it’s from.
    Stuff can return back to us in different ways.

    Am genuinely happy for you re. finding your shoes. Even as you told us you found them, I could feel the excitement and happiness radiating from you.
    I think of it like this: people struggling to get pregnant make the decision to give up - and become pregnant. You, after seven long years, decided to give up on your search for the shoes - and they found their way back to you. (I am NOT relating shoes to pregnancy struggles people - it's an analogy).
    Anyway, here is to seven years of having happy feet and completed outfits. x

    So happy you found the shoes! But your advice still holds true. It definitely helps to put things in perspective! Also, I think it's good to keep in mind that whatever you're donating could possibly help someone out there who really needs that particular item but otherwise can't afford it. The writer in me likes to come up with little stories. Let's say I've donated one of my good handbags, but later I regret it. It helps me to think that maybe someone out there just got a better job and they need that bag because it's just the right size to hold all their things for work, plus it makes them look more professional. Or maybe they're looking for a job and want to look more presentable for interviews--maybe they already have the clothes, but the only handbags they have are either worn out or too wild-looking to be considered professional (think a bag covered in cartoon cats or a fuzzy one in the shape of a unicorn!). I could go on and create an entire story about this character that formed in my head (and I might, actually), but you get the idea. Anyway, enough rambling! Great video as always! 💖

    I totally get this!!!! I gave away a purple pair of boots because I wore them all day long while volunteering for an event on a dusty ranch. My feet hurt *so bad* after volunteering and I blamed the boots! So then I got inserts for the boots but then the boots no longer fit my feet because of the inserts! So then I gave the boots away! So glad you found the pair again after 7 years!!! LOL!!! (All of this is why last year I bought *two* pairs of some sandals that I really like. Once I wear one pair out, I'll have the other pair!

    I have had several items over the years that I never got back. Two pairs of pants and a rainbow necklace. They all still live in my heart. I did not declutter them one of them was stolen. One of them I lent to a guy pal who was sleeping over after a dance at a friend's house and one was at a boys house but I broke up with him and realized it was there after. The pants wouldn't fit me now anyhow. But at the time it was a major loss. The necklace was a rainbow one that was vintage and bought at a garage sale and was amazing in every way. You would have loved it.

  • @olivemaycards
    @olivemaycards Рік тому

    I heard someone ask whether they would have been willing to keep all the thousands of items they got rid of just to make sure they wouldn’t regret those one or two items… ? Because you don’t always know which things you’re going to regret later. Although I agree with your gut feeling advice - if it’s something that can easily be replaced no big deal, but unique sentimental items require a bit more caution. Depends if you’re an impulsive/rage declutterer too, I guess.

    Yes, but were they as comfortable as the first ones? I have a pair of shoes that I loved and wore them out (falling off my feet worn out). Went and got another pair - hated them. They were so uncomfortable I never wore them again.

    So often as soon as I declutter something, I'll go looking for it. It's nothing life shattering or that usually can't be replaced, but frustrating all the same. It isn't stopping me from getting rid of stuff though. Every 2 weeks I drop off at least a couple of boxes or bags at the donation center.

    I know how you feel I had to retire a pair of combat boots I loved. The soles were worn out and the leather was cracking so even if I paid the money to have them resolved the leather was on it's way out. The boot company is Born with the slash through the o. They don't make them anymore ☹️but I keep looking for them. Also with my weight going up and down over the years due to anxiety/depression I have had my regrets of getting rid of clothes.

    My one declutter regret that I cannot shake is a knitted item. It wasn't made for me but a family member who no longer needed it. I couldn't find a use for it, didn't want it just sitting in a drawer getting musty so I donated it along with a bunch of other items without thinking that they may not even be able to resell knitted items without a label. I feel terrible because I know how much time and effort goes into making something like that and I truly appreciated that but we no longer had a use for it. I just wanted it to go to someone else who needed it but I fear it went into textile recycling. Even if I could magically get it back I know I still don't have a use for it but maybe over time I could have found someone to gift it to?

      @olivemaycards Рік тому

      Why beat yourself up over this without even knowing for sure that it was recycled? I have bought many homemade un-tagged items from major thrift shops over the years, have never heard anything to suggest that a hand knit garment wouldn’t be sold, assuming it was in good condition. I don’t think you need to take on this guilt, especially if it wasn’t even a handmade gift made especially for you. Even if you had found someone worthy to gift it to they might’ve also donated or trashed it later. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I encourage you to let it go and assume that someone is loving it to death since you have no evidence to the contrary :)

    I decluttered a bunch of books from when I was a girl, some of my favorite books, and regretted getting rid of them. I later went on Ebay and found them again for a little more than $20. That fact goes into every decluttering decision I make "If I get rid of this, can I find it easily again?"

    It’s the same thing they say about meeting a boyfriend or soulmate. When you aren’t looking sor given up refusing love - that’s when mr right walks in (well not in my case - I get guys who want nothing but one thing therefore out they go and why I never been married or had long term boyfriend!)
    When you least expect it that’s when something happens
    You let it go and the shoes showed up

    Oh the irony. 🤣🤣 I def think it’s a law tho. We have to “let go” before something we want just kind of comes to us. Lol. There are many times in my life when it was just like this, but just not always about “things” but yet things count too.
    I had one regret once I guess about not buying a particular love seat at the thrift store. I later bought a diff one that popped up months later. Recently my big find was a huge thing. Like a 3 in one piece deal. Two bookshelves and an armoire. I scooped it up and I then summarily got rid of two old bookshelves and a chest. Omg tho. It’s so pretty. Like a kind of muted turquoise stain. Perfect for my decor plans. Lol. And yes. The deal of the century. $100. Prob worth $1000 or better when new as it is all wood and in great shape. Beautifully stained and has great features. I have no regrets tho. 3 in and 3 out and al being used. Sometimes it’s just a no brainer tho. Lol.
    I think God for sure tho. I had just lost my beloved miracle kitty that I had nursed from 3 weeks old...(which really tore me up) and next thing ya know I had a little something to smile about.

    I can't tell you how many times I buy multiples of clothing/shoes. I am very hard to fit and to please so when I find something of good quality that fits, I will buy at least two to make sure I have several to last me for a bit. I found a shoe company that I love their shoes. I have at least two or three colors of about four styles. Haven't bought shoes for 10 years.😁
