Ritchie was known for improvising all his studio solos (except Highway Star by Deep Purple. Which was actually written). But this shows how much talent Ritchie has! Inventing such an amazing and difficult solo!
This is great but here some flaws here, as some of the transitions are Not as smooth as the Lp version. But Blackmores solos cannot be dublicared(Even by Himself)as Everyone trying to play them looks and sound like they're suffering from Arthritis. e.g...Watch Ritchie play Highway Star solo live in his Worst night then watch Morse!
@@highwaystar3780 That is true, apparently Rainbow never played Gates of Babylon live (apart from the Don Kirschner show, but that was a backing track, only Ronnie was singing live) because Ritchie could never do the solo justice and I agree with that. It is the best solo he's put down on record.
IT'S CRAZY INSANE THAT AT 70''S HE WAS ALREADY MADE THAT CRAZY INSANE FAST, CLEAN AND VERY HARD TO PLAY SOLO !!!!! RITCHIE IS ALWAYS MY FAVOURITE GUITAR PLAYER SINCE I WAS AT 2 (TWO) OF MY BASIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (WHEN I FIRST HEARD HIM WITH MY UNCLES) !!!!! BTW, RITCHIE, ACTUALLY YOU ARE THE KING IT SELF !!!!!
In the final 80s, Gary Moore was one of the main guitar heros. So, his opinion was relevant for press and teens...he was constantly asked about this topic: "Who' s the best guitar player?" He talked about Jake E Lee as his favorite one...of that age, because he recognized in an interview:"Ritchie Blackmore is the perfect guitar player"
Impeccable! Especially the lead, very precise (especially the arpeggio portion) can't stop watching and listening to you......btw great tone. Ritchie would be slightly impressed! Ha! Keep rockin' my friend, Long Live Rock n Roll!
And those Blackmore sweep picking licks, man, a only a few have truthfully done that like you did. Most guitarists covering this would just sweep pick a bunch of notes through that portion, but Blackmore had a shock value to it, small precise triad sweeps. Love it
He was early by modern standards, but Chet Atkins has got him by decades. Back when Country music was a close cousin to Jazz and had more than its fair share of "best axemen in the world" candidates. This is a loooong time ago though: my entire life, country is just emo with cowboy hats and guys in their 40s who all sound like Eddie Vedder on quaaludes. Back to the point, you can see Les Paul, who learned it from Chet, sweep picking in old ads for "the New Les Paul!" Nothing spectucular: he'd like play a broken 9th chord in a tenth of a second, but he was more of a stunt guitarist than a musical one. Paul, I mean, not Atkins: when Chet Atkins sweep picked, it was because he thought the song needed it.
Oh man - I’ve been listening to this since the album came out in 1978. I only imagined how Ritchie played this. I saw him 1st row in 1979 or so. He destroyed his Strat playing then he literally destroyed his Strat on stage. It was crazy. You destroyed this solo. The best ever I’ve seen on UA-cam. Thanks for showing me these licks.
This is the ONLY ORIGINAL studio cover of Nr. '' Kill the King '' on '' You Tube ' ' ! This studio record '' Long Live Rock 'n' Roll ! '' has been 1st. saled in may '78. & recorded in april '77. (except Nr. '' Kill the King ! '') . '' Kill the King ! '' has been recorded in late 1976. from the last band crew from ' Rainbow Rising '' era , but it didn't put on this LP 'cause of some personal changes during late '76. - early '77. This Nr. appears Blackmore in his full potential & also put this Nr. on a highest level of all Hard Rock numbers off all times ! Really (REALLY !!!) good played ! Congratulations ! :)
Thank you very much for the kind words! I appreciate the historical detailed information, I was not aware KTK was recorded as early as 1976. That is very interesting. In my opinion Blackmore was at his technical peak between 1976-82. Later eras saw him develop also as a great composer.
@@ClassicSoloSpotlight you say you think Ritchie's technical peak was in 76-82, so you exclude 70-73 (child in time, machine head, made in japan, burn...). With which arguments do you support this thesis?
I love all your solos, especially the Ritchie Blackmore’s ones, not to mention Jon Lord’s solo in Burn.. Amazing stuff.. I’ve been playing guitar for 44 years now and, same as always, when you spend some time with someone much better than you, you learn more in one session than in years of practicing alone.. please, give us a rendition of Gates of Babylon.. my respects👏. JC
Thanks for helping me figure the whole song out. When I play the verse, I play F-C as power chords, because I think it sounds better. But I love Blackmore's tone in Rainbow. It's like Orange tubes were made for Strat players who don't really want to sound like Strat players. [edit: or you can use a Marshall plexi with really hot pickups.] Simpler than putting a 5-inch wired up PC board in your guitar. I'm looking at you, Eric Clapton.
so accurate! great job indeed man. Just a minor comment on the fingering, i think Ritchie played "easier" position for the arpeggios before the solo (in Gmin) and after (in Amin), but... who cares 🙂Notes seemed absolutely perfect to me. Stunning!
Thank you! You're right about the arpeggio shapes. Ritchie used the 3-string shapes. I have personally always used the two-string shapes (á la Yngwie/Norum), which for me are more efficient at higher tempos.
Man your playing is incredible, amazing cover for this song and solo, just had a question, do you think the original solo was sloppy? because there is that ascending lick that i couldn't clearly hear on the studio version, every great cover of this song has that part very clear but slightly different.
I assume you're talking about the ascending tremolo picked scale pedalling on the G string? I do'nt think he played it that sloppy, it may be a bit buried in the mix. It helps if you're experienced with deep listening to older recordings, trained ears will pick it up even if its a bit buried. I personally think Ritchie played very accurately on the studio albums. Live? Well that was another story.
@@ClassicSoloSpotlight Yeah, i have the same opinion, in studio he is almost another player, playing with more dynamics and variety. But i saw a comment in a forum, which said that Blackmore couldn't play fast without sounding like a mess, i don't agree with this, because we have Highway star, Burn, Child in time, Death alley driver and other fast solos, but this was maybe the only one lick that i couldn't hear clearly on the album, i can feel it but as you said it is buried in the mix. Thank you for the reply, you're a fantastic player.
the tone is amazing! What cab IR (or DynIR) are you using in the wall of sound? I really enjoyed all the nuances and detail in the interpretation. GREAT cover (it's also my fav Rainbow Album) 🎸
Very nice playing, I prefer this way of playing the intro over playing it in the "half-bar" shape 4 frets up. A question, what is your picking pattern on the Gm chord on the intro, it looks like down, down, up? I'm trying to build up speed to be able to play as fast as you.
Thank you. This video was done with a pro track bridge and virtual solo neck. The neck p/u has since been swapped to a noisy old Fender single with lower output.
Thank you very much. The bridge is a Pro Track, neck is actually a beat up old fender single coil. Not an ideal pairing, I just like that s/c for some reason. An HS3 would be cool in the neck. And I think you'll be pleased with the next video.
Just incredible playing !! Imagine inventing this solo... Ritchie Blackmore, one of the best guitar players alive
=)

The skill & the tone, wow. Perfection

My God the overdriven tone of that guitar, when it kicks in after the intro, is pure perfection.

Thank you, glad to hear that. You might want to stay tuned in few weeks time ;-)
This is my favourite cover of this song on UA-cam. Great job.
Probably the greatest rock song ever written!!!!!!
Amazing cover? I've always been fascinated by the fact that like in this song, Ritchie is one of the earliest sweep pickers on rock history.
Thank you. That's right, Richie was an early sweeper.
possibly even the first one?
@@jope3069 I think Alvin Lee sweeps while playing Going Home in Woodstock '69
Listen to the end of “April” from the last Mark 1 album. He sweeps as the song closes!

Great work on those arpeggios in the intro and solo introduction + ending. They're so much harder than they sound.

When you say Gmin chord, Are you talking about the G min arpeggio intro or the G Power chord riff after that?
@@ClassicSoloSpotlight I'm asking about the arpeggio :)
Assuming its the Gmin arpeggio, it is down on 1st long G note, then alternate picked starting on a downstroke until next long G note.
@@ClassicSoloSpotlight Perfekt, tack så mycket!

Nice work! Very clean playing. Which DiMarzio pickups are you using? 🤟🏻
Bridge is a Pro Track, neck I think I had a Virtual Solo in.
Did Ritchie ever write a song that wasn't in G.? Just curious.
thankssss
💙!
Many of ritichies riffs are based around the same chords and notes. These are the same as Burn. Just played backwards. 😀😀
The vast majority of Blackmore classics are in the key of G. He loved that key back then.
Awesome. Is the neck refretted?
It's not, the frets seem to have held up.
Definitely the peak of Blackmore's technicality
Well done; which DiMarzio pickups model are they?
Thank you. This video was done with a pro track bridge and virtual solo neck. The neck p/u has since been swapped to a noisy old Fender single with lower output.
@@ClassicSoloSpotlight Thanks for the answer, I think that lower output pickups are the best for Blackmore sound.
Ritchie really like the key of Gm.
